Some doubts about Mi Max.. - Xiaomi Mi Max Questions & Answers

Bought this big boy on July over Lenovo MotoG4 Plus. Seems to be a fruitful decision. Here, down below are some of my doubts for which I have been unable to decipher the solution( I definitely have given xda and Internet a search)
This maybe something like that of a personal understanding but since I ain't so deep in modding stuff, I would be needing a simple answer.
1) Since a locked bootloader doesn't allow for any custom recovery to run on the stock firmware memory, does the flashing of TWRP through locked bootloader (Doom Slayer's method) also unlocks the BL in the process? Since I could properly use the CM13 and 14 ROMs
2) Is there any possible way to make MIUI Camera work on any CyanogenMod/Base ROM? Please link to any existing thread if available.
3) Could mpdecision hotplugging driver be supported by Hydrogen? It does on Helium but not on Kenzo
4) Since Quick Charge worked even for earliest ported/non-sourced builds of CyanogenMod (by Annabathina) can it be made available for MIUI ROMs too which do not support it until now
5) This is not actually a doubt just a question regarding the build strength and durability, how many people have dropped your Mi Maxes(the size definitely makes it hard to handle) Mention only the serious consequences incurred. And Thumbs up for the guys having zero falls.
That was all guys. Thank You

1)no installing twrp wont unlock ur bootloader.the only way to unlock bootloader is by using the official miunlocktool, while running a developer miui rom(chinese/global doesnt matter)
2)no,altleast that i know of.cm camera is more configurable anyway
3)im not a dev,but atleast frm ongoing discussions, its still under development. im sure it will be in future.
4)it works atleast according to this thread anyway. http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-max/how-to/xiaomi-mi-max-quick-charging-3-0-t3439563
5)i dropped my phone face first frm a height of abt 2ft or abt 80cm.just a small separation btw the front & back panels which was solved by applying slight pressure and panels snapped back into place.as far as i know max damage occurs when the point of impact is at the corners.

Thanks for answers 1 and 5. Would like a thorough answer for the rest from any Dev maybe

My hydrogen is still on a locked bootloader but I managed to flash TWRP using MiFlash and I'm now running Resurrection Remix.
As for drops... Don't. It's a big phone with a big glass surface up front. I have a soft plastic case that makes the phone more grippy and provides some impact protection. I wouldn't use it without a case because of the slippery metal back, especially if you have oily hands.

1. No, unlock it with a received code.
2. Probably yes but why bother with it? Use Open Camera & enable Hal support for Camera 2 api (in build.prop) as it's full present.
3. Not really certain if property Mpdecision binary blobs can be used on Snapdragon 650 SoC. It's really question for QC & Xiaomi firmware developer's. If their is a kernel source for any phone using Mpdecision with Snapdragon 650 it's safe to say that kernel infrastructure & binary libs can be copied & integrated. Then again in the past 2+ years a dozen of open source hot plugs ware developed for the msm bords of which some rather very good & best part is that they can be individually tuned for the SoC. Funy thing is how good battery life this thing have without any hotplug used & it really shows how power consumption unefficient MTK deca core design really is.
4. Yes with costume kernel that integrate support for it.
5. You can't expect from any big display, bulky, heavy phone to be drop resistant nor high durable. This stands for every phone with such characteristics ever made for instance if you drop a much better build Samsung Galaxy A9 on concrete and it hits by the display side its pretty much a game over same goes for the HTC 10 that is only 5.2“ & built like tank but rather heavy. Using a soft silicon cover with edges will help in most cases, I don't like flip covers even they naturally provide more protection.

I am also near to buy, I do not see any other 6+ phone WITH decent development (read: cm13, cm 14) support...
My only doubt is screen quality, reviewers not like it at all...

It has a decent IPS in cell display not the brightest one available but good enough. Certainly not anything to write about back home but also nothing to get concerned with.
Actuality I don't possess one yet, just ordered it & expecting it to arrive tomorrow.
Concerning the development it's still far cry but I am confident it will get to officiall status regarding CM one day. Partial problematic will be to get the both versions flow less (regular & prime) to candidate for official...

Ok, friend. When you see screen, write how it is for yoi compating to other phones you had.
Thanks

The screen isn't as bright as a Redmi Note 3 on full brightness and black levels aren't great if you watch a lot of dark movies. That said, the screen doesn't go fully black in portrait orientation if you wear polarized sunglasses outdoors. My old Redmi Note 3 had that problem and I could only use the phone in landscape if I was wearing sunglasses.

Got phone today it came with MiUI 7 International.
Display dozen look charming but that is mainly because it's pore calibrated. I set the enchanted contrast on & it become a bit better, unfortunately you can't do much about calibration with firmware available options. How ever I put an good old Kodi 15.2 that still utilise old standalone composition & decoding libs so that I can control display contras, with contrast set to 63 display begins to shine it stil doesn't have punchy colors like my old S3 Neo with similar Dpi Amoled but it's not far behind. Naturally blocks aren't on the same level but they don't look bad. Display is definitely bright enough & better for reading of course compared to Amoled. So as I mentioned before nothing to write back home about nor a top of the pop's but perfectly fine for usage, just don't have to high expectations about it. For me 340 DPI is perfectly enough.
For now only problem I had its a absence of the H265 high 10 bit decoder support, not even software one implemented on default or Kodi player, will try later with new Kodi that use Android video framework but I don't have high hopes regarding it.

I came from a LG G3 recently and I´m about one week with Mi Max. The screen is bright and not really much difference from another ones. If you look closely maybe you notice lower DPI than G3's but hey - I´m used to see my screen in a QuadHD display... so it´s Ok to me.
I´m only with TPU cover that came into my bundle pack and polymer screen protector, so max attention to avoid drops, at least until my temp screen it not in it.

- Do they make temp glass protector for the screen?
- If you in USA do you know if its compatible with tmo's 4G LTE?
- Anything you dont like about the phone? Regrets?

thinking to buy mi max- screen quality doubt...

As written up- I consider buying max but most reviews said screen is not too good (not resolution but colors, they mostly say it is too bluish...)
Clearly, screen is main reason to buy this phone so this is deal breaker...
From owners- is it really so badly calibrated or bad itself?
I know that there is apk kcal for calibrating on low level qualcomm based phones screen (on cm or aosp). As there is cm13 for max, did anyone tried this?
any feedback is precious, thanks...
regards
I ordered a Xiaomi Mi Max last weekend after reading the review linked below, the most incredibly comprehensive review I've ever seen of a smartphone. I'm still waiting on the phone, it is still being shuffled about China, so I can't give my own opinion of the screen yet.
Read review here:
http://www.techspot.com/review/1239-xiaomi-mi-max/
Before my Mi Max 64 (pro) I used my Note 5. The note has a obviously better screen with higher resolution, but my Mi Max is no slouch. My complaint about the phone is the camera. While it takes well lit indoor/outdoor snaps of stationary targets, I found shooting my 4 month puppy (that didn't sound right), dodging and running was a near impossibility. Doesn't seem different camera app, ROM or update will solve the problem as it is hardware driven.
I'll be selling my Mi Max when another large screen phone with good camera comes around (Honor Note 8, Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra or Lenovo phab 2 pro), but meanwhile I love the large form factor an quick response of the SD 652.
But the screen: That's the last of my concerns. actually only the camera bothers me)

Don't worry about the screen, it's fine. I use Color Control from the Play Store to calibrate the saturation. Now it looks like an AMOLED minus the deep blacks. You'll be satisfied with the screen in the Mi Max.

Agree! Apart from the camera, this phone leaves little room for complaint. I was wondering if there is some way ige quality can be improved through some software tweak or better preset shooting mode configurations. Tried Open camera, CameraNext Mod and Focal. Did notice a slight difference. But low light photos still frankly suck when I compare it to my previous LG G Pro 2.
Wondering what do you guys expect from a under $300 phone... It has plenty for that price already.
thanks guys, it is not problem in expecting much for low money. I had almost all samsung flagships in last few years (s4, s6, note 1, note 3, note 4, now note 5). I want big screen- and is there better solution?
Huawei have some but software is terrible for my opinion... and no development at all...
I will, if buy max, install cm first minute- so how it works is there any major problem (autobrightness or big battery drain). Camera is last important for me...

They have a free version and a pro version. I bought the pro version.
So this bluish cast or generally can be fixed? Screen is not bad, just not so good calibrated initially?

Yes it can be adjusted. It's honestly not that bad even without adjustments.
Nothing wrong with the screen. I have never thought about wanting to calibrate it. I don't think it has a blue cast. My XA Ultra on the other hand...
I use the glare removal reading setting for apps that I spend a long time looking at. It adds a yellowish cast to the screen. I suffer insomnia so blue light is a concern for me. My sleep hasn't been great since buying the max but that's entirely due to not being able to put it down! I use twilight also to counter blue light at night.
I bought my Max (3/32) from Xiaomi Authorized store, and wanna say, it's not bluish! BUT, my friend got the "best" version, and the screen of his phone is... little yellow-ish, or something like that. He got his phone from Gearbest, that's what i know. Before Mi Max i used another phones with 6,44" screen size - Sony Z Ultra's. Every phone (i replaced 3) had differently calibrated screen. The best way is to get phone and (if you don't like calibration) tune screen for your preferences. We all have little different eyes.
Reviews really not like this screen, but ok.
I would go on cm13 of course: how is camera quality and autobrighness there?
Every phone has this problem on cm...
I thought the screen was pretty good, the reviewers must be spoilt constantly around $800 phones. For this price point I was quite impressed.
Does anyone know who makes the LCD panel?

Worth "upgrading" from a OnePlus One?

I currently have a 64GB OnePlus One and I am thinking about replacing it with a P2. For me it seems that the positives in doing so are...
+ Metal body design
+ AMOLED screen
+ Fingerprint Sensor
+ HUGE battery
+ 4GB RAM
+ MicroSD expansion
+ Current supported model
+ Will get decent return on OPO to offset cost
Whilst the OPO had a flagship SoC of the time (SD801) that does still perform well enough, I imagine that the "mid range" SD625 probably isn't a massive step back. It has a slower clock speed, but twice as many cores.
Obviously I would be dropping from 64GB to 32GB storage, but the P2 allows for MicroSD expansion. In doing so, does it give the option of adding this as adoptable storage that is then seen as one big lump of internal storage?
I have almost convinced myself, but I am not quite there yet. Has anyone else gone from the OPO to this? If not, what phone did you move from? Do you still see it as a worthwhile move? Can you add anything to the arguments for or against making the change?
Thanks.

I moved to the P2 from the Huawei Honor 8. The main reason that i moved to the P2 is because of it's battery. Truly has been amazing. I've been using it for a few weeks now and I have not faced any issues. I am a heavy user and the 4 GB ram + the SD 625 chipset have been handling everything that I do on the phone quite well. The storage is adaptable as I've seen the option available. The metal design is not only good but feels quite solid as well. I have used the Lenovo Zuk Z1 a little while ago which has the same 801 chipset as on the OPO phone that you have and you are right, performance wise on a day to day basis, the 625 is pretty reliable. The amoled screen on the P2 is pretty awesome. I am not an expert on screens but I have come to prefer amoleds over lcds, IPS screens etc. So yes, personally for me, it has been a worthwhile move. I switch and change phones quite regularly. But I am thinking of keeping the P2 for while longer than most of the other phones that I've used so far.
Had an Moto x2014. Uses 801 chip. Had a 1080p amoled. I can confirm no obvious performance difference. If anything the p2 seems slicker. Battery is a massive win. Screen is brighter than Moto x2014. Not used opo1 tho.
I've upgraded form Oneplus 3 and it was worth it, battery life is amazing over 12hours sot, color calibration is different, fast charging is quicker 25watts over 20 in Oneplus 3, Android is snappy and all games that I was playing on op3 run smoothly on p2. Op3 has better sound quality on headphones, on p2 sound is OK by using blackplayer ex and built-in equalizer or poweramp+eq. and p2 has a Fm radio with record option but mine only works in mono, build quality is similar, camera definitely is better in op3, but I don't make too much photos so for me p2 is straight winner maybe if op4 will have bigger battery and sdcard slot I will comeback to Oneplus.
It's good to see from your responses so far that you all seem happy with the device, and with no real regrets. So making it look more likely that I'll go for it. I must say though, I am a little surprised to see anyone choose this over the OnePlus 3, which I would imagine would be better in every aspect except the battery. Perhaps this really should send a message to the industry that people really care about battery life?
I might have to have a look to see if I can source a reasonable case and glass screen protector before taking the plunge, just so that I can be protected from day one.

Well if you find a good screen protector let me know!!! All have found is complete rubbish. Too big, poor quality. Terrible reviews on Amazon and eBay. So yeah, if you find a good one, post the seller here it will be appreciated!!
Great User Experience
I bought this as I needed a phone while my S7 Edge had to be repaired due to faulty memorycard slot.
Other than a slightly mediocre camera on the P2, I feel the P2 is a much better user experience. So I've decided to sell my S7 Edge once it's been repaired.
I will however order me the LG G6 when it launches, but the P2 is a keeper as my second phone. It's absolutely great for my use. Phoning, SMS, Browsing the Web, email, Youtube(just a little annoying delay) and such tasks. When P2 get upgraded to Nougat it will be even more of a killer budget phone.
just think about the best phone you can have at the budget. There is lenovo z2 plus at the same price, which has better processor, but i think lenovo p2 is better than that when considering user experience.or you can go for mi 5

You have the 1gb variant of Moto G?
edit what is your rom exactly?
I have a oneplus 2 and i think about to switch to the p2. It's a pity that the p2 has almost no custom rom comunity
I came from the OnePlus One and I don't regret it at all.
My primary annoyance with it was the battery life. I never get the insane battery life people claim from a phone, usually 50-75% of what they get. When it was new, I got around 4-4.5 hours SOT, by the time I retired it after 2 years and custom Android upgrades, a meagre 2.
With the P2 a lot of people report 12 hours SOT, I get around 7-8 hours which feels incredible. As a general rule, I don't charge my phone for 3 days. And it doesn't matter what I do with it for the most part, I get that battery life. The main thing that drains it for me is 3G/LTE, that drags me down to about 6 hours. I use relatively high screen brightness, BT, NFC etc. so I don't skimp. Only thing I don't use is GPS, that is also a battery hog and don't need it most of the time.
Camera isn't amazing, but I don't use mine very much. Again, I agree, the 625 for most intents and purposes is fine against the 801. The one thing my OnePlus didn't feel was slow, though my friend's Moto Z Play did feel snappier in the menus than it. I don't think the GPU is amazing for gaming, I don't play many 3D games but have played some Hitman Sniper, and that does bog down to some degree but can't compare it to other phones. Doesn't bother me a bit though, my phone is mainly for messaging, web browsing and 2D gaming and it does all of those things perfectly. And I got mine for £200 which was even cheaper than I got my OPO for at £269.
I do hope we get one or two custom ROMs in the coming months, since I'd like to move to total stock from the P2 ROM, but it's not a bad OEM ROM really.

I still haven't had any luck in finding a screen protector either from a trusted brand or with good feedback. Not even the wet apply ones. I will keep looking. Will probably just have to go with a cheapy to begin with, just to have something on there. I had a nightmare trying to get a glass protector for my daughters' Samsung A6 (2016), as they were all much smaller than the screen and didn't stick properly around the edges. I think it is because it looks like the screen actually tapers towards the 2.5D curved edges. Looking at the P2 in the shop, its screen looks to be flat all the way to the slightly curved edge, so hopefully won't have those problems.

At least, from what I have seen, all the system menus, etc, retain the stock look, rather than being heavily skinned. So I reckon that once I chuck Nova Launcher on there it'll pretty much look stock anyway. :good:
So I went for it, and so far am quite happy that I did so. There are still a few differences to get used to or to find a way to get them as I like, but well worth the money I'd say. I am getting 3 days use out of it quite easily.

I initially bought a tempered glass screen protector from Amazon (sold by Topaccs), but this was awful. It was, as expected, smaller than the screen, but it did just about go from edge to edge of the actual display area. So I wasn't that bothered by the size. But it didn't stick properly, the edges weren't fully rounded and it picked up fingerprints so badly that even after trying to clean it I was just left with a horrible misting across the whole thing.
After looking around some more, I went for the BROTECT AirGlass protector from EBay (sold by protectionfilms24). I was skeptical to say the least about their claims regarding this "real glass" protector that is much thinner and more flexible but just as hard. But as it goes I am, so far, very impressed. It is a much better fit and looks MUCH better on the phone. If anything, it is a tiny amount too big as it appears to go onto the screens' curves, but it really isn't that noticeable with a case on. It has proper hole cut outs, rather than two big cut outs from the top and bottom edges that you get with the glass ones. Clarity and feel are great, and I tried scratching the leftover button cutout piece, and it certainly appeared to resist scratches.
Whilst I was waiting for this to be delivered, I noticed that Ultimate Shield are now selling a tempered glass protector for the P2. I have had good experiences with their products in the past, so would certainly have given them a go. However, I will be sticking with the Brotect for now as I am more than happy with it.
Ultimate shield on Amazon UK full coverage (zagg/skinomi type) now available.
So I just broke my Oneplus One and bought a P2 for 180€(!) Can anyone tell me how the camera compares to the OPO? I know, apparently it isn't that good but I didn't find the camera on the OPO to be any good either. Is it a step up from this?
Coming from op2 I feel camera is worst in low light and slower focusing, software side has better stock experience than that horrible lagging (throttling) oxygenOS, but video bug is terrible

Is this worth buying?

Hey.
I'm a little late to the party but I have just seen this phone and it looks cool. I have a P9 Lite at the moment and I am not keen on EMUI. I love the look of the mint colour Robin. How is the screen on this thing as I hate washed out IPS screens.
Also important to me is how is development for this phone?
Thanks.

The screen is on par with most LCDs these days, good viewing angles and color saturation. Development is on the rise. At this moment there are a hand full of roms to flash. You should get this phone if you can, as it's still great in 2017.
I've just purchased one from Amazon can't not at £149 new for the spec better than some Umi rubbish in same price range
Looks like its got good rom/development support as well

Its a great phone, and definitley worth the money, but considering your current device it's not much of an upgrade.
Hey guys,
I'm considering the purchase of this cool-looking phone as well and I want to ask about the battery life - is it really that terrible that you have to charge your phone more than once a day (as written in some reviews)? And what about the camera - is it really that bad or it's just a normal mobile average?
I am using nexus4 right now and Robin probably won't be my daily driver, I just want it because of the look but obviously I don't want to waste my money on some ****ty device.
Thanks

I can get through a day without charging with ease. That said. I've never been on stock, I personally didn't like it. Many users complained about performance and battery life on the Stock OS. The camera is pretty 'meh'. Taking pictures can be VERY slow (Use Google Camera or something, Open Camera and the stock camera is supposedly slow) and low light performance is pretty bad. During the day though I can get pretty nice shots, nothing to complain about, it's good just not 'great'.
All this said though, I've mostly been on OmniROM and LOS/LOS based roms as they seem pretty on par in both areas (LOS and LOS based roms have a few kinks to sort out at the moment though). If you're planning on sticking with the Stock ROM and have issues, I 100% recommend OmniROM, it's had a long while to get rid of all the bugs and it's got killer performance and with moderate usage (Including some light gaming) I get around 4.5 hours SOT on a single charge on Omni.
I hope this helps
If I leave the house with a 100% charge. I can get through the entire day...but when I'm out...I'm not constantly on my phone. I'm a pretty casual user and I've been pretty happy with the device in the 7 months I've been using the phone. The durability of the phone is the only real questionable thing. The plastic feels pretty thin and the edges are pointy. I can't imagine dropping the phone on its edge onto concrete. I've seen lots of people complain of the phone getting bent from being in your pocket. If you're the type of person that is rough with your stuff...it may not be the best choice....or use a heavy duty case like the Tudia.
Nextbit will also be stopping any kind of warranty in July of 2017. So if you buy your phone now...and something goes wrong...you don't have a warranty after July.
I think at its current price level this phone makes a great backup phone, or if you want to have something for a few months and move on to something better.
The good: it has a rather up to date OS, you get a good processor (808) for around $120, it's light weight and sleek, easy to root and develop on, sleek look, smooth performance with virtually no bloat, supports band 12 (important for t mobile).
The bad: no warranty after July 2017, the online storage space may disappear in 2018 (which was their whole selling point for the phone on the beginning), mediocre camera, very fragile design ( the phone is made entirely of plastic and there is no metal frame inside so forget about putting it in your pocket), no charger in the box, can feel warm at times if you are not careful about background processes and using an ad blocker, mediocre battery life (5 hours on screen surfing).
Great phone. The online storage was dumb and you wont miss it. If you really needed more then 32 gigs would you be looking at this phone at all?
The camera is just ok. Its better then the last phone I had which was a nexus 5.
The phone is good quality. The plastic takes a beating. I put it in my pocket, and run it case free and have for months. Barley a knick on it. Been dropped from waist high on wood floors and tile.
Battery - I stream google music all day at work . If I don't charge I can go about 8 hours with Bluetooth headphones connected. If I use it as a phone for googling here and there I get like a day+ on it. Reading books and wut not, 12 hours.
I run stock, with a personalized launcher, rooted, running substratum for blacking out all the menus and Nougat quick settings to use immersive mode. Runs like a champ, super fast. The warranty thingie sucks, but;at 117 bux, this phone is a steal.
I dare anyone to find a brand new phone with at least an 808 and 32 gigs of storage, with 3g memory for cheaper and better support.
I'll wait right here. :silly:
Hello Community!
I consider buying the Nextbit Robin for my 13yo son, who killed his S5 Neo (broken Display). I´m afraid he would be forced to stick with stock and no root because of....well.....pokemon go.... so I hope battery life is not THAT bad as complained in some threads.
BUT: The fact that he killed his last phone because he dropped it and the "bending issue" I read in this thread I am pretty unsure about it. My son puts his mobile into his pocket.

Pokemon GO works fine with custom ROMs and root as long as you use magisk
I got one and I love it , it has an amazing camera, great battery life (at least on Resurrection Remix), and is nice because the bootloader is easily unlockable. The only issue I have experienced is the speakers can be a bit distorted at max volume.

Question Thinking of buying this phone in UK, is battery life, camera quality, fingerprint sensor and vibration motor good quality?

Hi all, I am thinking of finally upgrading my Google Pixel 2 with a new phone. I am looking into this phone along with the Nord 2. I am curious how good this phone is. I am really pleased that there are tons of custom ROMs available for this compared to nothing for the Nord 2 so that is a huge plus already.
I want to know if the camera quality is good. Compared to the Google Pixel 2, would you say the camera quality is decent for this phone? Is the battery life good? I really wish to get 2 days of battery on moderate use from my phone, is that possible with this phone? Is the fingerprint sensor on the side reliable? I noticed that under screen fingerprint sensors are usually not very accurate. But this one has a side mounted one, so hopefully it is better. And lastly is the vibration motor high quality? Some cheap phones like the Samsung A52 5G have crappy vibration motors making it feel very cheap. And how is the sound quality in phone calls?
That is a LOT of questions! I hope to get some good feedback from you all so that I can make a decision. Thanks a lot!
Don't buy man ! You will have regrets !
Every single feature that's flagships quality is broken in aosp ROMs . Camera , Display ( Jagged edges on corners , touch stuttering , much lower touch polling and who knows what else , all ik is that touch feels like ass compared to stock ROM ) , charging...
You won't like miui for one or another reason guaranteed... It's loaded with very nice features but miui has something called adaptive refresh rate which is a fancy word for dogshet display refresh limiting that you can't even disable - refresh rate jumping all around 60 - 120hz.
I bought this phone thinking its loaded with good hardware and software support can be achieved via aosp , but no. Everything is closed source , lots of stuff is broken and the very little that someone gets to work is closed source and not shared with other ROM developers....
That on top of snapdragon 870 being the very worst processor you can get. 865 and 888 are much better processors performance wise after overclock/undervolt.
If you can I'd save the money and get a phone next year January/February once newer generations come. If you can't wait then maybe get a cheap snapdragon 888 phone ( Use kimovil to find which one that is but it sells for 400$ ... I really regret not getting that one ).
I'd sell this piece of sheet phone in a blink of an eye , I paid 500$ for it and now I doubt I'd be able to sell it for even 200-250$ lmfao.
Oh man, you seem to have a very horrible experience. Are you saying the performance of ROMs is very buggy?

Performance wise aosp is decentish, but severely falls behind miui... Arrow os comes up to pretty much same benchmark results as stock miui but still fps ain't even close to being stable like on miui.
Touch is the major deal breaker for me , arrow os is almost there but I can still feel the touch lagging behind my finger... Something you don't see on miui.
I just wanted a phone good enough to play games on ... but I spent last 2 months or whatever running around like a dog trying out various ROMs with every single one lacking something that's a deal breaker. I even went back to miui but gave up and went back to aosp once I couldn't disable dynamic refresh rate.
I hate this phone now with passion , community might be able to cook something up close to miui in 6months , a year , who knows when but I'll be getting myself a better phone ASAP
That is some solid feedback. Thanks for the information. What phone do you recommend instead of this then?
I don't know exactly why Rstment has so many problems, my phone has been running pretty smooth for the last month. On AOSP ROMs the only issue I have is broken pocket mode, which I read should be working on some of them but I can't find the time to switch ROM and reinstall everything at the moment.
I run the phone at fixed 120 Hz and it's super smooth. I don't understand how someone can say that the touch response is laggy because it's basically instantaneous. The phone runs at something like 340 Hz touch sampling, which is WAY overkill. Performance is the #1 reason to get this phone. It's really, really smooth and much better than most phones in the same price range. It also doesn't get warm during normal use (I really don't game much, but it stays cool even when I do). The screen is plenty bright and it has decent colors, with excellent contrast being OLED.
Back to your questions...
Camera is average. Don't expect miracles, it takes pretty good pictures with gcam, but it can't compete with proper flagship phones. I don't have a pixel 2, but I'd be surprised if the camera quality is better.
Battery life is pretty good, especially considering the performance. Maybe not 2 days with moderate use, but more than one day for sure. I charge it up to 85% once a day and I rarely go below ~10%.
The fingerprint reader works fine, it's quick and reliable. Nothing to complain there.
The vibration motor is a linear motor, so it's pretty good! It's not iphone-like, but noticeably better than basically every other phone in this price range.
The two things people seem to complain about are a green tint on the top of the screen and the proximity sensor.
In my case the green tint is almost unnoticeable (I can only barely notice if you have the brightness at 0 in a dark room and the screen is dark grey). The proximity sensor is... weird, as it uses other sensors to "guess" where you're holding the phone, including the gyro. If you reply to a phone call with your head somewhat vertical it works fine, but if you do something like lying down in the middle of a call it can act up.
Ok, good to know. Is the performance with custom ROMs like LineageOS etc snappy? I expected the camera to be not that great as it is a budget phone but I hope it is good enough and not total crap. And what do you mean by linear vibration motor?
I've only used AOSP roms, so I can't compare with MIUI. My wife has MIUI on her phone and I hate it so much I just waited a week to unlock my bootloader without even using the phone. So yes, performance on AOSP roms is fine (haven't tried Lineage specifically, but it should be similar).
Vibration motors can come in two shapes: rotating and linear. The rotating one is much smaller (and I assume cheaper), which is why it's the most used in cheap phones, but the linear one is much better. Compared to my old oneplus 6 this phone's vibration is both much stronger and more silent. It's also... more accurate? As in it can produce a very sharp, short vibration.
Good to know. I think I will probably buy this phone.
short and sweet I am very satisfied with my decision that I bought the poco f3!
Sample Photo look attach
a decent phone. the performance it's good and aosp roms have improved in the last months... (crdroid, arrow os and havoc os are the most stable roms that i have flashed).
pocket mode and aod are broken in aosp roms, they drain a lot of battery.

Surface Duo 2

Just watched the Surface Duo 2 announcement & reveal. I gotta say, I'm excited.
A few key complaints were solved, and some far beyond what I expected.
The glance bar seen at the hinge when closed...that's effin fantastic. Can see notifications with device closed.
Camera improvements (well not so much improved as it is actually in existence now, lol) - Though I imagine the camera bump will create some awkwardness when device fully open or laying flat on table, etc.
Pen magnetically attached to cover. I like it a lot...but can foresee issues with device protection options.
The curved screens...I guess they are supposed to help lessen the gap between screens visually. Got me curious here. (and, how do you protect that?)
No mention of water / dust resistance - maybe we'll see something in spec sheet.
Obviously thankful for the Snapdragon 888 and 5G connectivity!!
oh, and BLACK!
What do you guys think?
Hi,
Well I was awaiting that event for several reasons, but I must say I am disappointed in many ways.
You're talking about the camera improvement. Well, indeed the bumps makes the device look totally different than what is was and I really loved the neat and sleek design. But OK, so a bump. For what ? 3 lenses : 16 + 12 +12 MP. When all competition is at 108 MP ? I know MP do not make a picture, but still... I could forgive poor camera when there was no bump. Now, it is unforgivable.
It is already difficult to find a nice protection case for this. And a good screen protector. With curved screen,s this is going to be impossible. ANd that is also sad :-(
But the most incredible thing is :
- have you heard what version of Android will be packed in the new Surface Duo 2 ? Nope. not a word. So they may even ship it with Android 10. Because if they would have packed Android 12 (to be released in 3/4 weeks) they would probably have said so. But the silence leaves me with low expectations, especially when they talked so much about how Windows 11 is amazing in that event :
- do you know if the launcher has been improved ?
- do you know if that éamazing" photo software will be available for Surface Duo 1 owners ?
They did not talked a single time about the improvements they did with software. And that is simply scary as this is, for me, the main concern about this device.
As I said, I was awaiting this event. But given the circumstances, as I am still in the money back warranty program, I'll return the Surface Duo as I can not justify to spend 800€ in a device that has so many flaws and that will obviously receive no attention from it's creator.
Regards.

Hi,
Yes, saw that a little later.
It is comprehensible that they did not make a statement about that in their device presentation.
Is Android an solid positive point today, 2 weeks before Android 12 is going to be released ?
I may see the devil everywhere, especially in some details.
But if Microsoft was working on Android 12 already, would they not have mentioned : "And updated to the latest Android available shortly after it will be released" or something like that ?
I am still asking myself questions that, I think would derserve an answer from Microsoft...
Anyways, here are my complete thoughts about the Surface Duo 2...
1°) Improvements that I would take :
- the external display. Well not really an external display. But at least the ability to see what time it is without having to unfold the Surface Duo is an improvement that would be worth the upgrade in itself ; being able to see the battery status is also nice there. And to at least know if I got a call or message is also nice. Maybe try to add an indication about who is calling and we're good to go ;
- the better battery : surprisingly, with my day to day usage of the Surface Duo it's small battery is quite decent. BUT as probably most of us noticed, as soon as battery is heavily used, it melts like snow in a hot summer day in Florida ! So a better, bigger battery is welcome ;
- bigger dispaly : oh yeah... I would definitely take those as the Surface Duo is really a work tool for me and as such, the bigger, the better
- about the camera, I would of course use the new camera. But not really for quality, more for convenience. The double display management with the current camera is simply a disaster. Most of the time, when I use the camera and turn the device to shoot something else than myself, the opposite display does not turn on so I am shooting blind, if I shoot at all !.
2°) Improvements nice to me, but not "must have"
- better SoC ? It is nice. But will I even notice the increased speeds ?
- more RAM ? Nice, but would I even notice the improvement in a real life experiment ?
- more storage ? Nice, but 256GB is already 5 times what I need ;
- 5G ? I don't even think I've reached the limits of 4G+, so...
- Wi-Fi 6 ? Really nice, but... my Wi-Fi router does not have that, so not in dire need ;
- NFC ? Why not, but really I don't care.
3°) Things I'd like and that are not there (or not sure)
- Wireless charging ? I don't think the new device has that. Why ? Especially in this form factor and with the severe weakness on the USB-C port, wireless chargng would have been cool ;
- fast charging : 23W cahrger ? I think other brands like Oppo or One plus or even Xiaomi have much more than that and can charge a battery in less than 45 minutes... and a battery much larger than the one in the Surface Duo ;
- improved software. Cool, they worked with a phone game editor to have 3 optimized games to play on the Surface Duo... But is this not supposed to be a "work phone" ? And 3 games ? What about all the rest ? What about MS own software ? Will we have improved launcher and stuff like that ? Will MS help devs to adapt their software for the Surface Duo ?
All in all a mitigated impression over those announcements... At least for me.
Regards.

I do think some of your points are very valid.
Not sure if I misunderstood what you said about outer display, but there IS a notification area when device fully closed. With the curve ends of the inner edge of screens it allowed them to have a strip that can be seen with device closed. It shows things like time, battery, missed calls, notifications. It's certainly not robust, but anything more and they'd have to increase thickness and weight even more. Many consumers would prefer this device to be as light and thin as possible. (according to reviews of Duo 1, the thin design was a huge draw)
2°) Improvements nice to me, but not "must have"
- better SoC ? It is nice. But will I even notice the increased speeds ? OMG yes we should notice improvements here combined with RAM increase
- more RAM ? Nice, but would I even notice the improvement in a real life experiment ?
- more storage ? Nice, but 256GB is already 5 times what I need ; agreed
- 5G ? I don't even think I've reached the limits of 4G+, so... agreed, but they needed to keep up with all the others that offer 5G - I also haven't "needed" 5G, but it is faster
- Wi-Fi 6 ? Really nice, but... my Wi-Fi router does not have that, so not in dire need ; agreed
- NFC ? Why not, but really I don't care. In a contactless world (pandemic is really pushing the need for contactless solutions) we need this
Regarding Android 12...I would like assurance that it will eventually be offered, but will be ecstatic to have the Duo 2 work as intended in the meantime. It sounds like they spent a lot of time on the software to get things right.
One little thing that has me doing cartwheels...the device will remember what apps you use spanned across both screens, so you won't have to fiddle with stretching it each and every time like you do on Duo 1. My Kindle app will open on both screens when launched. LOVE THIS

Hi,
Yes, we agree on that "external display". And as I said, to me that is a HUGE improvement. I only wirshed they added the ability to display the name of the guy calling you.
As I also said, NFC, is not something that I would missed BUT indeed your points are right and that would be a nice addition... but to me wireless charging would be more useful.
And yes, if they would add (and offer it to Surface Duo 1) the ability to make the app remember if it's been spanned acroos 2 displays, that would be a HUGE improvement to software
Anyways, Surface Duo 2 is not for me before a long time (until prices drop to low floor as they are now for Surface Duo 1).
Regards.
