Does the display suck this much?

Most people say that the oneplus 3's screen is just a piece of crap...I would have bought the axon 7 if its bootloader wasn't locked and it had a better camera. So I have the iPhone 5 and even though it's a 4-inch display it's sharp enough and you can't see any pixels,so how does the pentile screen holds up because the oneplus 3 is one hell of a phone

It's plenty sharp unless you want to use it for Virtual Reality. The OP3 actually has a higher pixel per inch count than the iPhone. The pentile matrix does make it a little less sharp, but not something you will notice in normal use. I had my Nexus 5 (2013) and OP3 side by side and I could see a difference, if I held the phone at 20 cm from my face. Anywhere further than that, not at all. Also, it uses less battery than e.g. 1440p displays, which is why the battery life on the OP3 is really good.
Finally, the sRGB mode is heaven for me. Almost perfect color calibration with amoled blacks. I'll take that trade-off for pentile everyday. And if you like high saturation, just turn sRGB off and you also get a white balance slider! The choice is yours.

Actually I do plan on using VR but it's not that big of a deal

Depends on how much you use it I'd say. A friend of mine got the S7 edge with a VR headset. He used it twice in the first week he got it. Now it's gathering dust somewhere... It's mostly still a gimmick. But if you're really into it, YouTube is increasing its VR content and some games can be found on the play store.

I care about everyday usage (being fast),normal media consumption (like watching videos or using Spotify) more than VR really and I really care about the camera

I have s7 edge and OP 3 both.. I don't feel OP 3 has bad display! it might not be as good as S7 edge.. but definitely it's not pathetic display. It's very good display for day to day usage..

The display on the OnePlus 3 is pretty awesome, far better than on my One M9 for example. It may not be the best on the market but it surely isn't bad and it is far from sucking, lol.

At medium or high brightness with sRGB mode the display is great. Look really closely and you can see that it isn't perfectly sharp, but it is nonetheless FHD and you shouldn't be looking at your phone with a viewing distance of 5 cm anyway. Normal viewing distances are fine.
The minimum brightness is a bit problematic: if you turn it down all the way the dark colours seem to become actual black, so it becomes harder to see things.
Calling the display trash is surely an overstatement. It's viewing angles, blacks, minimum/maximum brightness, colour accuracy, resolution and pixel density are good to excellent. It's definitely not the best display you can get, but it's far from being terrible.

The people that say the display sucks are people that don't have the phone. I have a nexus 6p and OP 3 and I couldn't tell a difference between the screen resolution of both. Not even when I'm playing game. 1080p is easily rectifiable compared to 720p, 2k is not that much from 1080p unless you're looking at small text from 3 inches.
The colors on the default mode are over saturated and are a bit over the top but majority of casual users like it more. The display on sRGB is one of the best displays on the market. It's so pleasing to the eyes, it's almost 100% accurate yet the blacks are deep. My nexus 6p has almost as good display on sRGB but it has started to suffer from screen burn because of navigation bar.

I have a OP3, LG G4, OPO and LG G3 that I can compare to.
Holding the phone at my normal reading distance or even slightly closer I cannot tell the difference in sharpness between the displays.
The biggest differences are colour saturation and black levels along with screen brightness. The LG G4 and G3 are very saturated and unnatural looking.
Opo with kcal calibration and op3 with sRGB look more neutral.
Min brightness on g3 is high and blacks On op3 is the best.

It's strange that all of you guys are saying that it's not a bad display while the whole forum is *****ing about it

What do you guys think about the zte axon 7?

I think its a phone made by a chinese manufacturer that has metal in its build.

Personally the display is more than satisfactory. 4.5/5.
Comparing with recent phones iPhone 6/OnePlus 2 and wife's current iPhone 6s.

Actually I would love to do a blindfold test with any naysayers. The screen is fantastic and probably more than anyone but a heavy VR user would need. Post #2 was absolutely correct in his description.

I have seen a review that I could actually see the pixels on oneplus 3 screen's on video,hope it's the camera he was recording with

Not at all, it's pretty good if you do some necessary tweaks. Personally, I'm using Sultan ROM with sRGB mode (Photography mode) and the following calibrations: Red 93%, Green 87%, Blue 100%, Saturation 6%, Intensity 8. It looks great, natural colors, slightly saturated so they don't look too washed, and AMOLED black. I'm quite happy, honestly.

So you recommend op3?
I have a g3. I don't want to give up ir blaster sd card or removable batteries. Plus glass screen protector with no issues. But night time use with that AMOLED is nice. I don't like how it doesn't have multiwindow nor one handed view like my g3.
Hopefully it gets nougat quickly. I'll see how the Pixel XL is but if it's $750+ I'm not paying double. The OP 3 is a beast. I'll only consider the Google phone if it's $600. Which it won't be so hopefully I get a OnePlus 3 without screen uniformity issue this time.

I have galaxy note5.. and I can't tell the deference side by side by sharpness.. I can only notice some changing in color. But as I use sRGB on OP3 and basic on GN5 I cant tell any difference!!
Oh maybe the dpi.. but i change it on my op3 to be like gn5...

5t screen resolution compared to today's flagships. Is it good enough?

Hello everyone.
In considering the Oneplus 5t as a replacement to my good old Samsung note 4, especially for the price compared to today's flashships.
One of the main factors when I chose any device is the screen quality. I understand the 5t scores really high in this sector, but I'm worried about the resolution and screen DPI.
My note 4 and all today's flagships have higher resolutions, and I'm wondering if anyone has compared the 5t screen with other devices and can notice any real difference in daily life, mainly while browsing pictures were pixels become more evident.
I considered the Note 8 and LG v30, but I really can't stand those curved edges, and I don't need a pen since I don't use the one on my note 4.

I upgraded from the Note 4 to the OP3T and then the 5T. My decision was based on easy root and Dev community. I cannot notice a significant difference in screen resolution (if you look at TV resolution guides you'll see that you need to be insanely close to the screen to notice on something as small as a phone). OnePlus allows you to manually adjust the DPI to suit your preference so you can have tiny icons and such. I love this phone compared to my Note 4. Way snappier and no slow down from TW.
I personally have never thought "this screen would be better if it was 4k". But Samsung's infinity display is definitely a better display if that is your only concern.

Since you had a note 4, how would you compare the screen with the 5t one? Would you consider the 5t an upgrade in terms of quality, color accuracy, brightness, watching angles etc?
Also, is the 5t camera overall an upgrade compared to the note 4?

Full disclosure I didn't use the camera on the Note 4 all that much, but looking through the pictures that I took with it the OP5T seems to take much better pictures. The portrait mode is also great to have.
As for the screen, I personally don't notice a difference in quality. Small text still has clearly defined edges that I can see. I don't use my phone for VR so I can't comment there. I really like the colors on the display and didn't notice any significant color difference between the two, but this is subjective. It is plenty bright and I think that might be an upgrade from the Note 4 as I seem to recall having to manually adjust the brightness to actually see it whenever I stepped outside and still having some issues. Viewing angles are also great with this phone. I don't have any color shift unless it's a pretty extreme angle.
The one thing the screen has going for it is it's size and lack of bezels, which I really love. Other than that I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a significant difference between the two unless you looked really closely or had special equipment. So not really an upgrade in screen quality, but definitely not a downgrade. The rest of the phone is a huge improvement though. Way faster to use and a much better update schedule.

Thanks . Such a reply is much better than any review on the net, as you gave real life experience.
I'm really satisfied with the Note 4 display, and if this isn't a downgrade, that's grade. Being with much less bezels and overall lighter is a huge plus too.

I'm a Note 4 to 3T and now 5T convert.
Updates aren't an issue with OP, they're doing a fine job now. If I had to complain, and I don't need to, it's the security updates are always behind.
I don't have the issues that a lot of others are having. I also don't have a lot of crap apps on my phone. 100% stock with dark theme, BT always on, brightness between half and 3/4 and I'm averaging 1.25 day of battery and 8hrs of SOT.
In regards to the screen, it's made by Samsung. I'm surprised at how easy it was to adjust to. Choose your preset or customize it and run with it.
Camera, hmm, it's good but not as good as the Note 4 in low lighting. Once you get to know how to use the camera, other pics come out quite nicely. Most of the pics I take are of circuit boards and car parts.
Audio, unfortunately I'm hearing impaired so I try not to comment on it. I will say that it seems like every other update the volume output changes either up or down. I notice this when I'm connected via BT to my cars radio.
I can't walk and chew gum so I'm not a VR user.

Hellz yeah it is. It's excellent and it's even better than some QHD displays out there like the G6.

I honestly wouldn't worry about the screen resolution, it's fine, honest. On the plus side, the HD+ screen means the GPU has less pixels to push around.
My best advice would be to compare it side by side with other devices in the flesh if you can, that way you can see if you like the colour tone of the screen. I've spent several years using a succession of cheap devices bought directly from China. All of them have had LCD screens rather than AMOLED. I'm finding it very hard to get used to the screen because it looks so yellow whenever looking at anything white. If you want accurate colours (reds and blues accurate) you need to have the screen set to sRGB or DCI P3 and with either of those options whites look very yellow indeed. I've compared my phone to two other 5ts now and they have all been the same. I think I'm gradually getting used to it, but I've had to set the screen colour to 'custom' and as cool possible to get anywhere close to acceptable whites. The downside of this is it comes with very oversaturated reds. When comparing the 5t to the panels on the S8+ and Note, they seem whiter and generally a better panel.
Having said all this, I'm happy with the device in most ways and the resolution is basically fine for me.

I actually find that the Samsung panels that I've been looking at (S8/Note 8/S7) have been generally the same as the 5T as far as whites go (very good), but the S8/Note 8 tends to have reddish whites and the S7 had a greenish white. The 5T was much better.

That's interesting, I wonder if the type of lighting makes a difference? In the shop where I compared them my eyes honestly thought the Samsungs had more pop AND better colours. Their whites were closest to the LCD screen on my old Xiaomi Redmi Note 2. I also felt that the middle range Samsung's had all the same 'issues' as my 5t, i.e. a bit yellow when displaying white backgrounds, and very over saturated reds that look almost scarlet or florescent. I guess it must come down to what each person is used to and how they perceive colour? I'm gradually getting used to the 5t and I really like how it looks when playing a game. Doom 3 looks really lovely on it

I think there are a lot of factors going on. Lighting, personal perception, etc.

I went from the original Oneplus One to the Nexus 6P and now to the 5T. At first, I was also a bit worried that the display on the 5T would be less sharp compared to the 6P, due to the difference in DPI. But when I got the 5T, I could hardly tell the difference. The display was just as good and even brighter and vivid.

Although OP5T screen is beautiful perfect, But if screen is still a concern, LG V30 is a way to go.
I guess only difference is resolution...Pixel counts.

Uhm, no.
The V30 has one of the worst screens of all current (flagship) phones.
The one in the 5T is way, way better.

In direct comparison with the S8 I can tell the difference. But its not to great. Colors and everything else are really similar. Unless you use it for VR its very ok in my opinion.

Can confirm. Had a pixel 2 xl for a few weeks (same LG POLED panel). Brightness uniformity is horrible and whites are very grainy. Don't miss anything about that display.

Is it worth to upgrade from Huawei Mate 9 to OnePlus 5T?

I currently have a Huawei Mate 9 and I'm thinking take the Snapdragon 835 bandwagon.
Three devices were on my list, but 2 are almost discarded.
- Mi Mix 2. Design is great, but average camera and too dim screen are a no go.
- Razer Phone. I would love that 120Hz screen (I own a high refresh rate monitor and love it), but the screen is just 5.7", I like M9's 5.9", but I think the ideal for me is around 6.0"- 6.5".
So, I'm left with 5T, which I think is a overall great phone, but for those who came from Huawei Mate 9, is it really an upgrade? Does it really fully replaces a Mate 9?
I like M9's size and form factor, camera is very good, and I think that its bright and colorfull IPS LCD display to be very good.
But I do miss having a SD 835 powered Smartphone.

I really like my Mate 9 when I had it, good battery life, no lag... Only reason for my switch was EMUI updates and no persistent notifications on lockscreen.

Now that you moved to 5T, do you miss anything from Mate 9?

Take note that the mate 9 does get treble support while the OP5T won't. Also remember that aspect ratios are important when talking about screen area, where the mate 9 has a much bigger surface than the 5T due to its aspect ratio even if they have the same diagonal length.
The 5T is a really good phone nevertheless, but I am not sure how much of an upgrade it is in other quality of life departments it could be.

5T seems to have a strong dev team going, the mate 9 and 10 dont have any real development going on

What is wrong with 18:9? Is the phone physically too narrow/tall or are the black bars that bothers you?

I have both Mate 9 and oneplus 5t now. I like mate 9 for the aspect ratio 16:9 and the SD card. I like the development of the oneplus 5t. If I have to keep one I will choose mate 9.

Nothing is wrong with 18:9, just preferred 16:9 for gaming and web browsing. The frequent software update and near pure Android experiences makes up for the IR blaster for TV and screen aspect ratio. The SD835 is enough to convince you to change phones.

Snapdragon 845 is around the corner.

I just came from having a Huawei Mate 8 and had it for two years works perfectly and was a great phone. I loved the size and form factor and had the same problem I couldn't find anything to upgrade to. I think there's too little development for Huawei. My Mate 8 was still running Android 6. I did find the battery and screen on time better on the Huawei. Thought the screen size on the 5t is smaller and more narrow I actually much rather the feel in the hand and how compact it is in the pocket etc. I was in the same situation I wanted something with a headphone jack, decent screen size and battery that could put custom roms on, so went for the OnePlus 5t in the end.
Just think the power settings on Huawei are better being able to prevent apps from running at all while not in use is good as the battery life I'm getting is pretty poor. I could get two days out of the Mate 8 and would only just get one day from the 5t. Without being able to stop apps properly the battery just drains with hardly any use.

Reading all the posts, looks like 5T is a small step up from Mate 9 generally speaking. There are goodies (eg. development) and compromises (eg. 18:9).
I'll try a 5T if I find a used one for a good price.

Most flagships from 2016 will not be a big leap to the 5T. I think you have to look at all the unique offerings of the 5T to see if you think it would be a good fit for you.
Some people cannot live without beautiful AMOLED screens. And the dev support on the OnePlus phones is top notch.
Some people hate 18:9 aspect ratios. And can't stand proprietary charging methods (even if they are faster than any other phone).

Makes sense.
AMOLED screens:
Personally, by a small margin, I preffer good IPS LCD over Amoled as I'm more sensitive to poor whites on Amoled (where they are actually a gray shade on Amoled) than its deep Blacks (where they are a gray shade on IPS LCD). In both cases you get used to the display weakness and will just really see that difference when comparing side by side.
Dev Support:
Its nice to have a active community, but I'm not too much anymore on ROMs and etc, EMUI is good for me. But for the 5T, ROMs are really good because I think Pure Android is fast, really fast, but lacks a few things, so good ROMs fill in the gap.
18:9 aspect ratio:
I'm really used to 16:9 and I think they should not have changed it for a while, but I'm willing to try it these new options.
Proprietary charging methods:
Not a con for me, as I normally only charge my phones once a day, and never a original charger has failed or broke in my hands.

I know what you mean. But the color reproduction on Samsung's screens are fantastic, and the brightness is far better on AMOLED screens than on LCD, simply because of how the technology is used in real-world situations.

I just came from having a Huawei Mate 8 and had it for two years works perfectly and was a great phone. I loved the size and form factor and had the same problem I couldn't find anything to upgrade to. I think there's too little development for Huawei. My Mate 8 was still running Android 6. I did find the battery and screen on time better on the Huawei. Thought the screen size on the 5t is smaller and more narrow I actually much rather the feel in the hand and how compact it is in the pocket etc. I was in the same situation I wanted something with a headphone jack, decent screen size and battery that could put custom roms on, so went for the OnePlus 5t in the end.
Just think the power settings on Huawei are better being able to prevent apps from running at all while not in use is good as the battery life I'm getting is pretty poor. I could get two days out of the Mate 8 and would only just get one day from the 5t. Without being able to stop apps properly the battery just drains with hardly any use.

I still have my Mate 8 in addition to my 5T. A year ago, I was desperate for a new toy so I was looking at the Mate 8 and 9, and decided to get the 8. The 5T and Mate 8 are very different devices that they complement each other and I love both. But development was limited for the Mate 8 but I was able to get KangVIP ROM & black pyramid theme running on it which is cool. Mate 8 by far the hardest phone I've had for rooting/flashing. Soft bricked that thing more times than all my other devices alone.
I prefer the aspect ratio of the Mate 8, but the 5T is compact and sleek. Oneplus is just so much more robust development wise, which is why I went with the 5T. :good:

I like Amoled (had samsung galaxies from 1 to 4) then I switched to LG where displays on G2 and G3 were just OK, but I fell in love with those great whites compared to Amoled.
Moving forward, G4 had one of the best screens ever for me, but was plagued by severe burn-in, G5 display was dimmer and burn-in still an issue.
When I got it, Mate 9 set a new standard of display quality for me. Great colors, very good blacks, high contrast ratio and the brightest display I ever had.
So I think, whichever phone will be my next one, I'll be losing on display.

That may be true. Display does come down to personal preference a lot of the time. I did play with a Mate 9 at Best Buy once when I had my Pixel XL but it didn't look as good. Probably because I am used to AMOLED, lol.

Oneplus 5T has the adaptive screen mode that replicates true colours, pretty much identical as real life, or an IPS. I still have my Nexus 5, which by the time was praised by it's outstanding screen quality and colour accuracy, well, with that adaptive mode on the OP5T the whites are actually whiter, no bluish or orange tint to it, simply a perfect white. The colours seem dull but that's how real colours are.
AMOLED were praised at first for punchy vivid colours, I never liked it. Went to the OnePlus 5t and when I came upon that adaptive mode, I knew this was the best device ever released, a true worthy upgrade from my lovely and awesome Nexus 5.
A friend of mine has the mate 9, I have to say the screen is nice but nowhere close the OnePlus 5t has to offer.

Text blurring when scrollen.

So i sold my Mi Mix 2 when this issue occur my question is do many of u have blurry text when scrolling?

Afaik that's because it's an IPS display which has the benefit of amazing color accuracy at the drawback of pixel response time.
It really bothered me when I first got the phone coming from an AMOLED phone, but after a few weeks I stopped noticing it. I have a really fast high-end TN panel for gaming on my PC, and looking at the colors between that and my phone are a really astounding difference.
I use my phone as a monitor for all photos and graphics I make for now (I'm not a professional so I don't need a specific high end monitor for this)

Yes the scrolling is blurring... With a little red ghosting too I notice (only I the dark I see that)

I understand it is an issue of the used lcd, but previously on my Xiaomi redmi note 4 I didn't had that issue so bad that I would notice also on my LG g6 it was not visible like on the Mi mix 2 even on a huawei p9 it was barely visible.

I noticed as well, but when I switched to the Oreo EU rom it was barely noticeable.

Has anyone checked out the Mi Mix 2s to see if this ghosting is fixed? This is really my favorite phone as it is bootloader unlocked and it has a fully functional AOSP build on it,but the ghosting and text blur still bothers me after weeks of use.
I have read according to benchmarks that the refresh rate is improved by around 10ms on the 2s, but I would like to confirm the issue is fixed before spending the money on one. Like I said, this phone is perfect to me aside from the ghosting.

Thanks for letting me know man. I hate to spend the money on getting a 2s if the issue is still present. I love everything else about the 2, so I may as well keep it if the issue remains. Thank you!

Is there a way to change this "ghosting" effect ? Even if it means more lags during scrolling ?

Im still using my lg v20 because of the battery swapping option. Huge plus for me.
Been jumping back and forth between buying a note 9 and rog 2. Issue is with the screen. Those whove used qhd know that when you pickup an fhd screen you can tell its fhd. Maybe its just me. As im a photographer so I notice immediately
Btw, A famboy of neither. I dislike both companies. I have no sentiment to any brand and they just sell products to me.

So..... I used a S9+ before I switched to ROG Phone 2. I have to say, you will notice the difference. But, you'll get used to it. It will be indistinguishable at a certain distance. Also 120hz gives a much better experience. Other than that, do more research between ROG 2 and Note 9. If camera is a priority, I personally feel like ROG 2 will have a better camera for daylight photography. Sony sensors are great at color accuracy. With Samsung, overexposure will be an issue and the image will be super sharp. Which might also be a problem if you do some post processing as you can't revert that sharpness filter.

this is a gaming phone, not a phone for photography enthusiasts. why even bother with rog phone 2 if you want qhd screen?

Im worried about going from qhd to fhd in that it will really stand out. Im buying it for a bit of gaming. Will probably get the cooler and controller but i want no lag. I have an lg v20. Yes old. But the screen is very nice . Sharp. No complaints. But lag at times which drives me crazy. So ita between a zippy experience with rog2 and fhd screen or possibly a bloaty lag experience with the note9 but a sharp screen.
Sharp screen and no lag together would be preferred. Maybe i can tweak no animations on note 9 and just remove bloat. Im not certain and i hope i can deal with the resolution difference. I did once pick up a Samsung fhd and immediately noticed. It was good but it stood out as something off. Maybe ill get either, try it out then sell it if i cant adjust to it.
Zippy no lag amd sharp is my thing

I still have Moto Z2 Force as my primary phone. I love the screen. You can see the difference between this one and ROG 2 screen.

Ah man. That's a bummer. I may get used to the rog2 but now it made me think

i switched from the Pixel 2XL to the rog phone 2 (and got it from Trading Shenzen so it is the chinese one), i mainly use my phones for Youtube, Netflix etc. and i have to say qhd is (for me) not worth to look out for that feature.

Im sure you noticed a difference in the beginning between the qhd pixel to the rog2 and then you juat got used to the rog2, correct?

I have a LG V10 as my back up phone and still use it daily for misc house things (ir blaster for example). You'll really enjoy the ROG 2. It's a deff upgrade in everyway except durability (kinda hard to beat the physical endurance of the V20).

So if you're a photographer why do you even bother?
you want a good advice? get the sony 1 mark II.
the screen is 4K +600 ppi and the camera and its options will blow your mind
I have the rog 2 and I do love it but I actually bought it for gaming and because it was cheap (500$)
And although it's a great phone, it really has a low quality display.
too much black crush and also that awful red tint on gray
add some oled banding to that...
I'm also a guy who really really notices display differences even small ones.
Had an xperia x for some time and I do have to say Sony knows how to make a display.

Yes for sure. Thr V20 has some kind of standard so it can be rough housed
