Hello everyone I'am in kinda need of help
You see I tried to simunlock my desire 520 which leads me to various sections and posts in this sub.
Through reading I found out that first I need to S-OFF my phone to be able to do that (and root)
the thing is all what I found on the sub are the following:
1. To S-Off my phone it has to be rooted or
2. To root my phone it has to be S-Offed
which is neither of the two I have and is confusing me on how to get it done.
Also I read somewhere that HTC Desire has HBoot but mine don't have.
On the boot loader (white screen thingy) there's nothing there that states the HBoot version although I found some here which guides me on how to install HBoot but the thing is. It is for Froyo or will make my Android version to Froyo (Im on 5.1 that's why im unsure if it is okay or not).
Well all what I really need is to Sim Unlock my phone if there is other way around or someone could guide me itwould really be a great help! Thanks and more power to you peeps!

Hey, I'm gonna come with a really noobish question I gues... I've read alot of guides and such about this, but I still don't find anything that states it clearly, and it can get kinda confusing.
I have an HTC Desire that I want to root, it has HBoot 0.92 and OTA Froyo 2.2, I don't think this is a problem anymore though?
Now, I believe my phone is unbranded/unlocked - any way to check?
And what radio would I need to use? I'm from denmark and the tele company is called Telia... Does it matter?
And since I'm from denmark, I can't buy any paid apps off the market, and it pisses me off, rooting will fix that right?
I'd like to use the OpenDesire ROM. But it's a bit confusing with all kinds of topics refering to eachother, and the "Ultimate guide on rooting" says that I need HBoot 0.80 and a current rom of 1.15 (or something like that), I have 2.2 >.<
Thanks in advance.
Go to Settings>About phone>Software information
If your phone has S/W 2.09.405.8 then you're on a generic Desire - which is a good thing!!
Next is to check the box specification - if it says you've got a 3.7" AMOLED screen then you can downgrade the HBOOT and root your phone. If it doesn't say AMOLED then you've got a bit more work involved and the information you need is in the ROM Development forum
Hey, thanks for the quick reply!
I got everything you said.
So that means I can just use Unrevoked?
And how about the market? That's one of the main reasons for me to root, so that I'd be able to access the full market?
Bump? Or something
there's no way to root a Desire with the Bootloader HBoot 0.92 known yet, which you got after you've upgraded to Android 2.2.
This means you have to downgrade the bootloader first, root it with unrevoked, ...
There are several guides out there.
But the important thing is, that you must downgrade the Bootloader in order to root your device.

Aye, I kinda wrote that
I'm interested in the market problem for me.
Okay i have read many topic regarding debranding phones but i have recently got this Desire direct from an orange store ( This Monday ) and its has :
Android 2.2
HBOOT : 0.93.0001
Radio : 5.10.05.30
I have not seen a way to debrand with this HBOOT, is this possible if so how ?
Regards
downgrade. just in this forum part is a thread about that.
Don't downgrade or stuff, just download UnRevoked and drivers from this forum and it will root and install clockwork. Then S-Off. I have exactly the same device.
You will find all in here "Desire Index - Everything Desire is here!"

Cheers dude, nice to know someone with the same device and HBOOT managed it that way
just waiting for DJ Droid to finish downloading then time to flash it ! before flashing this ROM do i need to unlock my device from Orange because im not sure if its locked or not
Hi,
So I've done a fair bit of reading and want to root my DHD (mostly for the extra features and apps it enables, and in the future possibly custom roms, but not at the moment). However, there's so many sites all saying to use different methods.
I've found this, which was written only a couple of weeks ago so should be up to date? Even though my phone was brand new about 5 weeks ago, it (for some reason) isn't on the newer kernel (that needs downgrading). EDIT: It doesn't let me post links as I'm new. Search "android devices root desire hd tutorial" on google and it's the top one
How safe is rooting, following this (or a different guide you recommend)? I.E chance of bricking, etc.
I've taken a backup of my SD card (copy + pasted all folders in windows explorer, hopefully that does the trick) - what else should I know before carrying on?
So:
-How should I root my phone and are there any known problems?
-How should I back up my phone before rooting (and how destructive is rooting)?
-Anything else I should know.
Orange, UK, unlocked phone, bought sim-free through dialaphone (they put together a sim only contract and sim-free handset and sell it as a bundle).
Thanks
There is an excellent guide on xda. Just search Google or xda for "s-off tool HTC desire hd xda" . If you follow it step by step, you will get root, and s-off. S-off will enable you to flash custom ROMs or kernels. There is a link there also for the devs other tool "eng s-off" needed if you want to flash radios.
But, first of all you'll have to set your pc up and able to communicate in ADB. You'll need to dl: HTC sync, sdk tools, fastboot.exe, and some other I can't quite remember off top of my head....not at pc or home.
If your phone is branded, you'll need to make a "gold card". There are guides around for that.
Next follow the s-off guide exactly. There is a link to visionary, which will give you root access, but not able to install any kernels, or ROMs.
Then use the s-off tool and eng s-off tool (if you want).
If you follow these guides exactly, there will not be a problem. Just make sure you have lots of battery, read all the guides steps at least twice, and warnings. There is always a risk.
Before you flash any custom ROM, best also to make a clockworkmod recovery of your original Rom, and copy to a safe place.
So I can't be more specific with the guides, I'm away, just put those quotes into Google, and follow the links in the posts, and you'll be fine.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Hi Tamen and welcome to XDA
Personally, I'm not a very much advanced user of handsets, so I am basically in the same position as you. Although, I have a rooted & flashed ROM&Radio.
Jkoljo's tools are a blessing, and so is the thread "+[GUIDE]How to flash a ROM onto your DESIRE HD [COMPLETE]". It utilizes jkoljo's tools well and very much tells you how to get yourself into a working custom rom. Thats how I learned
You can find the thread in the "Sticky rollup" of the "Desire HD Development section".
Have fun here! No better place for stuff like this than XDA
Yeah, the post you linked to is essentially the old school root method i.e do it yourself rather than using the one touch tools, and is the method I favour as should anything go wrong you'll no exactly where. Chances of a brick if you follow the instructions is virtually zero so no worries there either, enjoy.
Ok thanks everyone, I've setup ADB etc, and got visionary installed, I'll get rooting later today.
Just one last thing - how easy is it to unroot & return to how my phone is now? Can this somehow be done if I brick it? If bricked, obviously it needs to be unrooted when sent back to orange/htc or they'll have a fit and demand £350. As I'm 1 month into a 24 month contract, I'd rather not spend the remaining 23 on a useless phone
EDIT: and do I run visionary plugged in with charge only or not plugged in?

I don't think you need it to be plugged in, I don't think it matters.
At least visionary has an "un-root" option, and jkoljo's tools have guides to undo everything done so far, afaik
So I clicked temproot and it said "rooting, wait a minute" (or whatever the screen is ) then went black and restarted :S
Android 2.2
kernel 2.6.32.21
build 1.32.405.6
software 1.32.405.6
Everywhere says that 1.32.405.6 should be fine - any ideas?
Hi Tamen
You do not need to connect to PC to use Visionary+.
Hmm.. your build number is at 1.32.405.6 so it should be a problem. If your phone is higher than 1.32xxxx, say, 1.72xxxxx, then yes you have to downgrade first in order you to use Visionary+.
I guess your phone is branded? Since it is from UK Orange. If yes read up the gold card thread.
The branding is not an issue. Try to reinstall Visionary.
It's not branded - Dialaphone buy phones sim-free and buy sim only contracts and put them together - my phone came unlocked and there's nothing that say orange on it, so I can only assume it's unbranded.
I re-installed and tried "temproot" - it didn't black screen this time, but it still re-booted (went to white screen with htc logo), came back, tried "su" in terminal and got permission denied. I don't want to click permroot as if it's not temporary rooted it won't work and could cause problems I think?

Try the method you mentioned first. Visionary, it's suggested, may misbehave on some phones the method you posted about in the OP doesn't need visionary to work.
Although I haven't perm rooted yet, it successfully temp rooted after another try (3rd attempt, second unplugged)

Good show! Now go for permroot and follow around the various guides mentioned
Hey all, new here to posting although use this site alot for the quick fix answers ive had in the past.
How ever decided i would try rooting my desire z as i was looking for that extra control over everything and to loose some of that bloatware just like many of you.
Only thing im having trouble with is actually getting a successful root, im not one to just ask without looking of course but in actual fact ive been at this since 11ish this morning (8hours ago) with no luck. Ive tried about 5 different methods (from xda users such as 'Aegishua' and 'gtrab' guides to a random google searchs also) to no luck at all. Had quite a fair few errors pop up during the process of trying but so far my DZ is still intact and working fine but with S-ON still.
Im not here to ask for someone to explain a fool proof way to root my phone i was just hoping that someone may b able to point me in the right direction of a guide that should hopefully bring some success.
I have an unbranded Desire Z running 2.2.1 (originally 2.2) on Vodafone UK. i could list software details but im hoping someone could either tell me i can't root it since the new security update in 2.2.1 or could pass on a link to a guide that may work for me.
Sorry to sound long winded but its been a day full of "wtf's" amungst other phrases so im just a little lost and confused
Thanks in advance
Matt
if you have adb working and are comfortable with it, use the wiki method..
do you know what firmware version you are? if you are 1.72 or above, you need to downgrade to 1.34 before you will be able to root successfully.
Check in dev section, there is something bout debranding and rooting for DZ and shows what newly one has issue, also you could try the xda wiki methond gfreev.05

Before trying to root you need to follow the step above. This is mainly the mistake people make when they try to root the Desire Z if your a new comer, this is words from the wise. Lol
Your firmware is probably 1.85 or something higher than 1.72 by the looks of things which just means you need to downgrade. But the complicated part is actually getting the downgrade to recognize your vodafone branded Desire Z's unique CID. That's where a goldcard comes in handy because it bypasses the CID check.
Anyways, all you need to do is make a goldcard to downgrade. If you get any errors then post the exact errors word for word if possible.
I'm Sorry if this has been brought up many times or not, but I got so confused to the point I have to ask you guys on how to do this.
I'm used to play with the Galaxy S2 which I know how to root and all that, so i thought HTC Wildfire S wouldn't be the bigger problem since they both are on Android.. i was mistaken.
Here's my question: How to root my device with stock 2.3.3 firmware, Where is the actual guide which doesn't take me ten other places which confuses me and seems it's not even the correct guides for rooting this device.
Device information:
HTC Wildfire S A510e
Stock Android 2.3.3 European
Sense version: 2.1
Something Called S-on/S-off , could anyone tell me what this mean and how to know wethere im "on" or "off" and how to change this
Any more information i need to give?
I would appreciate it ALOT if some nice guy/gal would show me a tutorial on how to root this device, nothing more, nothing less.
Thanks
To check if your WFS is S-on or S-off you should switch it off and than keep the volume down button pressed whilst you press the power button. The first line of this screen will state if you're S-off or not..
If you're not, there's no other way to get S-off than the xtc-clip.
Unfortunately i'm stuck on S-off and there's no xtc-clip near my location afaik and i don't think buying one for the sake of rooting one device is worth it.
Yeah i got into the Hboot after many tries(guess i did many wrong attemps) and it says it S-On
So basicly I have to buy this "xtc-clip" to ever get my phone rooted, or is there other ways?
For now the xtc-clip is the only way to achieve s-off on the WFS....
I'm still hoping that htc will release the bootloader in due time though
Ahh crap, so it was only about luck wether it's S-off or S-On in the beginning?
That's right, apparently HTC released S-off models of the WFS in the Asian regions... not sure how much is true about that btw
Thanx for that "how to check s-on guide".
Was hoping mine was s-off but its not :-( tough luck
