Follow my steps exactly
1) Flash.the recovery using odin again
2) Boot to recovery the FIRST time after flashing the CWM Recovery otherwise it just resets to stock.recovery after the first boot
3) Flash Recovery Fix Zip and then SuperSU and if you want then you can toggle signature verification in CWM options
PM me for some other queries

1. Is there a way to tell the stock recovery to run update.zip already stored in /sdcard? The only option available is load via adb sideload unfortunately the usb port is no longer working (charging, data, fastboot, adb etc; using wireless charging instead).
I recently flashed the developer preview of android lollipop . Bootloader is also currently unlocked.
2. If step 1 is possible, is there a way to create a signed update.zip of the most recent twrp.img recovery that can run on stock recovery?
1) I don't think that this can be done in stock recovery. 2) You could flash the latest TWRP using Flashify.

Is there a way to root the lollipop developer preview without using adb or fastboot? If I can root I can just flash recovery img using su terminal.

The latest SuperSu will root Lollipop. It can be flashed via TWRP.

The thing is i cant flash supersu since i dont have custom recovery. To get a custom recovery, i need a working usb port which is unfortunately broken.
Understood. The Flashify app will allow you to install TWRP without a PC if your current system is rooted. If your current system isn't rooted, Towelroot should do the trick.

The phone has s-off and rooted. Twrp has been installed with custom recovery. The issue is when I flash a custom rom like AOKP it's give me a failed message. I made sure to clear cache and factory restore before the flash. Not sure how to fix this.

Exactly which ROM and which versionn of TWRP?
I'm using TWRP version 7.5.1.1 and AOKPm7vzwkitkat_nightly.zip (right off their website) I also tried cyanogenmod rom(cm-12-20150405-nightly-m7vzw.zip) and that also failed to install.

The current version of TWRP is 2.8.6.0 which is the one I recently downloaded and I am currently using. You can download it directly from TWRP.

TWRP version 7.5.1.1 <-- is TWRP manager from the app store i believe. But you are correct 2.8.6.0 is the latest.
OP if your TWRP is outdated, it wont have the new By Name partition installer. Older recovery's used block numbers, CM changed to Name partitions and messed everyone up. If you are using a AOSP based rom you will need to have the most updated TWRP
Thanks, I updated TWRP, this solved all the problems. Thanks for the help. Running TWRP 2.8.5.0.

Uncheck auto reboot in Odin. Once the flashing process finishes, remove battery, put it back and press volume up+home+power. It will boot to CWM
