I've started a new thread rather than tacking this on to a software recommendation thread, as I'm just trying to get an idea of peoples view on risk rather than comments on particular software.
Having started to drive myself mad trying to remember logons for online accounts like amazon, ebay etc. I'm now really stuggling with the extra level of security some ecommerce sites like ticketmaster are using like RBS secure pass. I have enough difficulty remembering logons and passwords for the main sites and now have to remember yet another set just to complete the purchase.
So really my question is what level of information would you store on your device? I'm currently looking at ewallet and am happy with the software and purchase price, but they suggest storing everything; bank account details, logons and pins; credit/debit cards numbers and pins; ecommerce site logins etc. Do you trust storing such sensitive details on a portable device? They say they use government-level (FIPS) 256-bit AES encryption, do people feel that's secure enough and uncrackable? At the moment I generally use a variation of the same password with different numbers on the end even for ecommerce sites, so it's got to be better than that! I'm not overly worried about protecting discussion site log on's though. I guess you could setup "wallets", one for ecommerce site, one for bank account details etc, so multiple accounts would have to be hacked, but then you're back to having to remember (and periodically change) multiple passwords. I've also just thought that the phone is pin protected as well and the password data is stored on the phone rather than the memory card, so that's another level of protection.
I guess it's just a case of weighing up the risks, i.e. relying on my ever more flakey memory, but possibly only compromising one site, although that could include bank accounts, or risking the lot, but (hopefully) stored in a much more complete, effecient and secure method and actually doing the recommended changing passwords every month. If I don't trust the software, then it's back to using my failing memory or bits of paper Having just sorted out my late mothers possessions I found a notebook with all her bank account details, pins, passwords etc
i'm using eWallet from Ilium on both my wm phones and pc...it's secure (256-bit FIPS-197 AES) enough for me (u can use long passwords, set lockout times after unsuccesful logins).
to be honest if you are milionare you may need to be careful with using this sort of software but being quite normal, average earning human being i think that no hacker would like to spend weeks or months to try to hack my eWallet. and even if someone would be so patient, as soon as my phone would have been (god forbid) stolen i know that i have good few weeks to change all my sensitive data with banks and other social network websites and eShops...

Thank you for a down to earth answer. May be I'm being a bit too paranoid. As I said in my first post, anything's got to be better than my current flawed system.

good read good thing i keep my nfc off all the time
Can anyone confirm that the radio is actually off when NFC is unchecked in settings?

This vulnerability affects very few users. Furthermore, those users that it does affect must have their phone's screen turned on for the vulnerability to be exploited. Surely if you have your screen on, you'd be aware of any foul play from third parties; why are you worried?
Screen has to be on and it has to be VERY close or near (hence the n in nfc)

Screen on, device unlocked *and* within a few cm of this device (this is the NFC antenna portion of the device, not just anywhere on the device).
I'm rather interested in how exactly this could be done. Though I reckon it could potentially be dangerous to publicly release that info, I could call it a case of "it's not a bug, it's a feature" and do pretty useful things with it. I'm thinking along the lines of making the phone connect to wifi, which without such hacks is only possible if the phone that scans it has one from a number of NFC apps installed. Pre-installing that app too just so you can log into wifi at someone's house kind of eliminates the purpose of using NFC to login in the first place.
If you programmed a NFC tag with a url that contained embedded javascript (or escaped characters that would later unescape to javascript) *and* the browser interpreted them instead of ignoring them or invalidating the whole url... maybe. But it's a big 'if'.
Most new-ish browsers now disallow Javascript in URLs. The other main attack vector would be a trusted site with reflected XSS vulnerability (ie, a site that renders URL-encoded parameters into the rendered page, like a 404 page that displays the requested URL within the error message), but it's more likely that an attacker would just host his own page since the URL target of a NFC tag is opaque until read, anyway.
The main thing: don't allow NFC to launch the browser without previewing the URL's value, and don't preview the url's value in any container that can be induced to interpret its content as HTML.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Well, if it is possible to make someone connect to wifi using javascript, then it might be interesting to put a small website online with just that bit of javascript. I could then put a hyperlink to that page in the NFC tag. Would still require internet access, but it would use a lot less data to work that way (the normal way is installing an app first, which costs way more data) and it would also be faster and require less actions. From the user's view, it is a lot more elegant. This would mean you don't have to inject the javascript directly into the url and run the risk of the url being blocked by the browser.
Bad side is that you will in all likelyhood practically be putting your wifi password on the internet. That might be a major security issue.
That is assuming it is possible to make devices connect to wlan using javascript, which I understand from your post it is, though I can't find out any information on this.
What do you think about this theory?
It depends mainly upon how Android handles NFC events. If it fires an intent that relays the NFC tag's content to a handler that blindly fires it off as another intent, or blindly opens it in a browser window... well... there's a good chance that Bad Things(tm) will eventually happen somehow. If Android makes at least half an attempt to sanitize the NFC-read content, and doesn't have any command-injection vulnerabilities along the way, it'll probably be OK.
I'm still reading up on Android's specific implementation of it. Much of what I wrote above is actually based on naive handling of QR-encoded URLs.
Speaking in the abstract, the worst thing I can imagine an end user doing today is downloading (or writing) cobbled-together handler with no sanity-checking or sanitizing that registers itself as a listener for NFC events, gets the user to make it the official handler, then does something completely stupid, like reading the String straight from the tag and using it to blindly construct a new Intent and fire it off. The thought of someone doing that gives me chills.
what if someone where to place a chip near a pay-pass location while using google wallet? what then?
A 'chip' ? Basically nothing, except possible denial-of-service due to interference (you can't read two tags simultaneously).
There's nothing magic about NFC. At the end of the day, it's basically a low-ceremony moderate-speed serial link that allows parasitic powering of low-cost radio+eeprom modules in the form of tags. It's what you and the software make of it.
NFC payments are no more or less inherently secure than online paypal purchases encrypted with SSL. In the grand scheme of things, the actual data transfer is usually the *least* of your problems, compared to how the data is stored on your end & handled on the other end.
Would you ever allow your PC to indiscriminately send $10 via Paypal to anybody who manages to plug in a flash drive for 7 seconds? Then don't run a payment client that automatically satisfies any payment request you literally wave in front of it without at least requiring some form of affirmative confirmation & approval from you.
Can a badly-implemented NFC app be cloned or impersonated? Sure. And so can your Visa card, if you hand it to the waiter & he swipes it through his own capture device when you aren't looking. That's why you never, ever want to agree to TOS that leave you on the hook for basically unlimited charges.
NFC payments backed by Visa or Mastercard are a wonderful thing. If somebody defrauds you, you fill out a form, file a police report if necessary, and maybe pay $50 if you have bad credit & your issuer feels like they can screw you as a subprime customer. Otherwise, that's the end of it, unless the bank can prove you committed fraud or engaged in wantonly reckless and unfathomably stupid behavior.
NFC payments backed by my checking account, and no daily hard purchase limit like $50? No. Way. In. HELL. I had a debit card stolen 10 years ago. By the time the bank contacted me, my account was overdrawn by almost $5,000. For almost a week, I couldn't even cash a check from my parents, because it would have just gotten absorbed by the overdraft. I spent 2 days just fighting with the bank to get the ongoing $29+ overdraft fees (for legit expenses autopaid after the thief overdrew my account) waived (after they finally credited the fraudulent charges back to me, ~2 weeks after it happened, and I was able to argue that they wouldn't have *been* overdrafts if the bank had done its job and noticed charges for stores and things I've never bought in my life). The truth is, it's *very* hard to unwind and fix a checking account catastrophe.
So, in summary:
* wave my phone over a sensor to blindly pay $3 and board a subway train that's going to depart without me in 17 seconds if I don't run like a mofo up the escalator, paid from a fund that gets topped off $25 at a time, at most twice per week? Sure.
* wave my phone over a vending machine that requires a pin code the first time I do it at a new location, is backed by a credit card, and maxes out at $10/day? Sure.
* ditto SPECIFICALLY for Taco Bell.
Bigger charges? Ask me, and make me explicitly authorize them after demonstrating my knowledge of a passphrase.

NFC is absolutely insecure. It was discussed by Steve Gibson of GRC on last week's (Oct 3rd) podcast of Security Now.
http://twit.tv/show/security-now/372
It was discussed by him, and if you read the whole thing, he basically said exactly what I did. NFC itself is security-neutral. It's a slow short-range wireless serial port.
If someone wrote a proof-of-concept app that ran on your PC, monitored COM1 at 9600-8-N-1 & responded to "transfer://amt=100&acct=123456789" by blindly transferring $100 to account #123456789 without even asking for confirmation, would you declare that serial ports are "totally insecure", too?
NFC is a hardware capability. Nothing less, nothing more. Software can use it for good *or* mischief. Include a compensating control that requires physical affirmation of intent, and legal controls to limit your total liability, and its use for payment is no worse than a prepaid transit card. Security isn't a thing, it's a process with layers of things, some of which WILL occasionally fail.
Remember, if a mugger marches you up to an ATM with a gun in your back, the bank isn't going to refund your withdrawal, either.

I am about to make a decision between Galaxy Tab's and Ipads for deployment of about 30 devices to support a web app (Netsuite.)
We have to have cellular connectivity, as these will be used in the filed and wifi access cannot be relied upon.
I have a demo Galaxy Tab from our carrier - AT&T.
As usual, I am aghast at the sheer volume of cruft preinstalled.
What are my options in general for removing them?
Do I have to root the devices?
I'm not really opposed to that, as long as I can still keep the devices secure.
The carrier can suck eggs re the warranty.
We use Maas360 as an MDM.
You should be able to disable them individually, though that kinda takes a while and will be even worse with thirty tablets.
I informally support the smart phones and tablets for my department (engineering). as painful as this is to admit in an android/tab 3 forum, apple is much easier to support in a corporate environment. they're harder to screw up, easier for the non-tech crowd to set up. all the reasons I dislike iOS for personal devices make it easier for corp use.
our company uses native iOS email, but touchdown for android devices. touchdown isn't the greatest email app, which is another reason I prefer iOS for corporate use.
if they start allowing KNOX devices from Samsung to use the native Samsung email app, I will switch my work line.
just my opinions. for work I use an iPhone 4. for personal use I have an S4 and a tab 3 7.0, and the wife has a note 2 and a note 8.
Thanks guys - I am sending a NastyGram to our AT&T rep - but in fairness, at least half the junk is Samsung's doing.
A browser toolbar?
C'mon - when was the last time anyone installed one on purpose?
Wildtangent?
Their borderline malware has been banned on my network for years.
I suspect rooting isn't an option for me, as it hoses future upgrades.
Then again, since these are AT&T branded, there likely won't ever be any updates.
I suppressed a lot of stuff with Maas360, but that doesn't free up the resources, and some things do still run.
Russ,
How do you attach files to emails, or do you have some sort of collaboration solution?

Really I don't get it. Doesn't make any sense.
Google has already developed a very good AI, and is still developing it. You're a phone manufacturer. Why would you work on your own AI, just to confuse buyers and make the phone even more crowded with several cloned APPS which do exactly the same thing?
Does Samsung really think they could do better with Bixby? (or whatever they will call their AI)... And even if they did... Don't they have way more important priorities like... Non exploding batteries? Stereo Speakers? 4k Screen? Dunno, Phone stuff maybe? Instead of the 1123123th assistant which starts an Alarm for you?
This would make only sense if they would split their ways apart from Google and use another operating system right? Well, no way they are leaving Google. That won't happen. Even Microsoft can't manage to have enough Apps to please users on the Windows Store..
So what's the Point Samsung? Why work on a super useless AI which, (and that one is for sure), will have many compatibility issues and users will try to find a way to uninstall or disable it?
Why try to have a say in all departments and do nothing properly at the end, instead on focusing on the Phone itself?
I'll reserve judgement for now. Maybe they have something different to offer compared to Google.
I think Samsung realize AI is the next milestone in smartphone technology, so they have to come up with something to get us consumers to purchase their products and not the Pixel.
Let's wait and see.

it all comes down to one - money. Why pay for license to google on multimillion product sales, per sale, when they can do it themselves.
Analogy goes - just because Mercedes produces very fine if not the finest automobiles in the world, doesnt mean all others should have never tried or did what they do today.
Just sit back and enjoy the show, its all for the better, more competition between similar products - the better
So that they can have another thing that failed (Bada,Tizen) in their portfolio, something that already exists and does it already 100x better.
so samsung can put it in their own products without needing it to be android.
So they can data mine your every utterance, and box-out google/amazon etc. at the same time. You and everything you say and do is worth multiple millions. Still can't believe we have been so techno-rized (yea, not a word) to allow OPEN MICs in our pockets, home, bedrooms, bathrooms and then turnaround and complain about "privacy". LOL!!!

And Google's not doing all of that now? Android enthusiasts seem to forget that Android only exists to further Google's core business which is advertising revenue through monetizing user data.
As for why a Samsung AI makes sense it's about an eco-system, not a product. Samsung's SmartThings is an IoT leader and providing something similar to Alexa makes more sense than having all of you IoT users trying to figure out how to make Alexa work with them. Whether Samsung's successful and competitive remains to be seen but their intent is certainly logical.
I've been been on android since the g1 days, got every new android phone that everyone said was great. I had the first galaxy phone, the original nexus 1, the nexus 5, the htc one, the oneplus 3t, even note phones. Today I decided to leave this inferior product behind. How delusional have I been saying android is better all this time. Here's the thing, iPhone works. I can no longer connect to WiFi networks anymore because of some security update. I am still pissed I paid for a camera I can't use. I'm tired of missing calls because this phone decides to put itself on do not disturb. The final straw that broke the camels back is location settings and privacy. Apple decided to let people protect their privacy, google is actively trying to stop people from protecting their privacy. Take for example find my phone which is useless now unless you have location turned on at all times. WHY......? I am able to turn on location remotely on Samsung phones but here is google blocking your from doing it. My favorite one fits in my hand...

Lol, Gmaps suck, always have.
Just because you can't configure your Android in a way you're happy with doesn't mean the alternative is better in every way. Particularly, I don't like your attitude about the location tracking, like Apple is actually better, well I'm here to tell you they're not. Have you heard of Wi-Fi scanning? It allows Wi-Fi networks to track your location more accurately than GPS quite often because of Wi-Fi triangulation. And you can't turn that off on iPhone, even when you turn Wi-Fi off, your phone is triangulating Wi-Fi letting Apple always know your location, and on addition, Google because most of those routers report WiFi info to Google.
If you want a privacy respecting location tracking tool, like the Find My apps, you shouldn't be relying on your OEM anyways, whether it be Google or Apple or Samsung.
As someone who's used both platforms, I wouldn't blame you if you use an iPhone and like the usability more, but your rage induced reasoning here doesn't seem all that informed or thought out.

Well, Seconding this post. I agree, in my latent opinion it is clear that both platforms have pros and cons respectively.
The iPhone settings are a mess... they give me a headache. Way too dumbed down.
Plus I doubt there's a package disabler that works on a stock iPhone
Just stuck with what and how they give it to you.
No.
Problem you have is you literally cannot do anything with an iPhone.
Least with Android you can root and make changes.
This is no longer an option for you, not only that but if you do get the latest and greatest then you'll be paying the highest possible premium in the world for it.
Sorry but apple just do not tick anywhere close to every box, they can't due to their ecosystem.
Then there's the emulators, root tools, mods, ability to freely copy things to and from your device, I can send an entire folder structure over android beam, my choice, my way.
Sure Google has got a little Adolf Hitler over these last few years, but apple is the bloody antichrist in comparison.
More to that point, you will not be ruling in hell. You'll be more of a slave to apple than you ever were to android.
And as a g1 user, I think you should be ashamed of yourself if you can't understand the benefits of android over apple, yes they're a little cleaner and a little shinier, but the benefits are superficial and skin deep.
If you have an issue, let us know, we'll try to help.
If you are the issue then perhaps being a slave to apple will suit you.
Either way, ranting with no point to make is not the way I would have went.

Well that's what 2 factor authentication is for. I have had that active for years. Whats the point of disabling access to other applications when applications can just keep tabs on other applications. How about battery life? This has irked me ever since android removed the option to turn off GPS and leave location on. They obviously did it for a reason, to get more accurate information about you. BTW it has been reported that google actively tries to bury and confuse users about its location settings. I'm not worried about my data, plan I don't pay it, but if I did what good does it do me since I can't connect to any enterprise wifi. I spend half of my day at work unable to connect to WiFi an relying solely on data.

Lets assume I have been here for the whole ride since cyanogenmod. Configuration is not the issue. I would not care if it was just google tracking me. I can disable location history but that's not the issue here. Your making this issue about one thing. Read my post its an aggregate of things. Again this is basic functionality. It's a joke isn't it ?
Each Jailbreak depend a hack / breach, so each time you must wait for a jalbreak for a new iOS version or iOS fixed version (Apple block each time Jailbreak on new version). Above all even with Jailbreak there a lot of things not availbable on iOS, and the first reason is now all iOS users don't care Jailbreak... They want the lastest iOS version without headache.
For Android, Root is for a lot of OEM granted/allowed (OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, etc...) and don't void warranty, only Desimlock tools / Changing IMEI void warranty.
This OEM share their model kernel source and root can be granted by simply patching boot and/or using a custom recovery like TWRP.

Just stuck with what and how they give it to you.
No.

Well were often stuck with what android gives us. Like updates, my sons g6 never got one. You complain that your stuck with what they give you but you are content with the mess android is accross its many vendors. It's been 13 years since android came out and every year a new plan to make updating easier. Remember project treble? All failed promises.

I gave up on Samsung too, I hate their update lottery. My favorite computer is also my phone that's why wifi is important to me. I used to print documents straight from my phone at work because it is faster. I can't do that anymore. Unless I downgrade to a more unsecure version of android. Whats the point of security updates if I have to downgrade making my phone more vounarable just to get basic functionality back.

The security hype is just that. My 10+ Pie does fine in the real world. Same firmware/updates for the last 1.5 years.
Your mistake was updating.
I picked off a trojan preloader and a malware jpeg over a year ago, no damage.
That same malware likely breach the latest updated Pixel just as easily. In the last year zero breaches.
A phone is only as secure as the person who operates it. I don't use wifi and limit bt use in high usage areas because vulnerabilities in this OS... which also have never nailed me. Regardless all my data is redundantly safeguarded and a complete reload takes me about 2 hours with no internet because I have a SD card/data drive*. So even if I get nailed it's not going to eat too much time. I'm readily to reload *now* if need be.
*if that's compromised add another 5-6 hours to the reload time. Still no critital data loss.

I should be ashamed of myself? LMAO I have 0 brand or platform loyalty. Go look at my last posts on roms, questions go unanswered for weeks. Good to know I have to root my phone just to make it functional because that's what we have all been doing all this time. You act like its a feature instead of a coping mechanism. Slave to apple lmao a little dramatic no.......? Lets get something straight I am not a fanboy. The minute I get tired of apple ill drop them too. I am just tired of all this shenanigans I am well aware of all of apples limitations. Theres is plenty I am giving up here I understand that better than anyone but I would like to have basic abilty of having my phone (its primary purpose) ring. I'm not the only one having this issue dont act like I am in a bubble.

Your questions go unanswered? Oh wow so you're a needy, spoilt child? You sound like you've never worked for anything in their life!
Your questions go unanswered????
Get a grip on your life son. The last question I put in the 8 Pro forum went unanswered, why? Cos probably it's a difficult question to answer, or someone didn't want to say what they thought cos they felt ashamed! Or they just didn't have the confidence to say what they feel.
Either way you're dropping a brand, a phone and a company cos you were impatient??
Since the G1 days??
I'm from the G1 days yes I was there on day zero and again with the hero, then the desire HD and the one.
I've never seen a guide from you. Or a tool or a helping hand..
You're a spoilt child, you want it all yesterday, you're willing to give nothing! The Devs on Android have given "years!!!!" Not days or weeks, and now decades, so what? Can moan?? Zero contribution and maximum take!!!
I'm not the matter of coding but I've made it my business to contribute, you've done nothing and took everything, whilst being super ungrateful!!!
You take and you take, it's quite obvious.
Now you're throwing your rattle out your pram..
Please, go chill with apple, we as a community have lost nothing but a leech.
Apple has added a volume to its plethora of bots.
I'm sure you'll be happy.
The completely wrong choice but hey, when you know you know right?
PS:. I'm 99% confident I could have fixed all of your issues either in person or remotely, but you'd have to give me a Charlize Theron massage to get be to help you now, you've made me revert so slightly ill
And I would have, for zero cash, just to help you, just to make sure you're ok!??
Good luck finding these types of guys with apple, lol never!!
Lol.
I'm fine with your thread, it's weak.
I was nice to you and all you could take away was me saying ashamed!
( Your do realise I said that for a reason right?)
Guess not.
Bye bye, enjoy your £1800 2015 phone with less memory than you need and more optimization than you can use.
Any more bad vibes, please message me directly I do not want to annoy XDA mods.
I know you're so wrong, thing is so do you!!
You just have no imagination, and you've either Bennett been able to delve down deep enough to explain an issue or you're lazy!!!
IPhones stand alone with certain tasks, but they're left behind with most things.
Do these things
1. Send me a Bluetooth file
2. Send me a folder from your phone
3. Send me a movie stored on your device
4. Fire up an emulator
5. Use your phone as a pc
6 Overclock your CPU and GPU
7. Turn off your page file, zram, swap file
8. Kill people off the WiFi you're connected to!!
9. Download and keep Adobe lightroom for free!!!! (Lol with apple??? Hahaha nope)
10. Beat my all time SOT legend score.
11. Huawei P20 Pro - 2 days- 17 hours 37 minute's in one charge.
12. Use two SIM's one phone!
13. Install a third party application within 1 minute of opening your phone's box
14. Copy all your unofficial (now lost) music from your phone to a blank external drive.
15. Try to get help on XDA for your phone!
16. Move the clock
17. Make the phone louder
18. Connect to an android watch
19. Share screen on an average Android box
20. Let me mod and use your phone as a microphone which can broadcast everything round it!!
The answer is no, and if it's no today then jailbreak wise it may be no tomorrow.
Where Android make the door wider, apple tries to close it.
Apple people are just horrific, self righteous, loathes who usually would just pay a bill blindly than check and then pay.
Tbh the way you've reacted you pay for the bill.
This is my last message on this thread to you. You're either too short sighted to see my point or too too proud to accept the help you've been offered, you have a OnePlus phone. I could turn that I to a beast!! Truly.
Btw my friend boarded a private jet and his iPhones glass over the camera cracked on the table in front of him.
Apple told him he did it, no warranty.
Bruce Willis in his peak - "if I die can I pay my music and movie collection to my daughter?"
Apple: - "no you cannot!"
Good luck lad.

Seems about the same as fidgeting; it wastes time jumping from one platform to another if not needed.
Easiest fix would be to flash back to the firmware that was working for you. When Samsung or Google drop the ball (and they frequently do) don't pick it up, instead use the one you got your hands on.
I will likely will be using Pie for years to come as Android 11 is flat spinning in at a higher sink rate than 10 and accelerating. A10 was the last usable Android OS and it has some real nasty usability issues that Pie doesn't have.
For what? To emulate Apple? Idiots.
That rotten OS put more challenges on Samsung's plate to try to make it usable but Sammy can only do so much with rancid base code.
It actually Samsung you should be addressing... they take criticism really well especially the SK reps
