I got a brand new Galaxy S3 on Monday. Coming from an Inspire 4g and an HD2 before that, I'm not new to flashing ROMs or anything. I rooted that phone almost instantly, because it was a refurbished phone and didn't have a warranty. Now on this one, I'm a bit hesitant to root or flash any custom ROMs.
I've also read a bit about stock vs AOSP ROMs... can any one give me an example of each? Preferably a stable, JB based ROM? I would like to use a stock based ROM so I can have all my apps and settings back when I flash. This stock ROM is eating up battery life rather quickly so I want something quick, stable, and visually pleasing without any bloatware.
I am aware that I can just return my phone to the store within 14 days if it doesn't work... an employee told me they don't even look to see if it's rooted or has a custom ROM.

I think it is worth it. Look through the S3 forums and you'll find various options for ROMs that meet your needs. I'm running Serenity v1.1 which is a JB GNote2 port. It is stable and works well for me.
I would also read MrRobinsons stickied post about Rooting. Towards the bottom of the OP there is a tool mentioned that he made that will help you de-bloat. It works wonderfully. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
I noticed it says the ATT one is " New Image Based off ATT I747UCALG1"
I have the newest software, would I be able to update after doing this? Or will that put me right back where I am now
I just put CM 10 over the stock ICE. Incredible difference. Go for it!

It really depends on what kind of user you are. If you're a user that prefers stability and is not that much of a 'power user', then the risks might be troublesome for you. If you're the user that wants adventure and doesn't mind fixing bugs every now and then, then give it a go. I'm a user that's in a middle of both - I like stability and I'm kind of a power user and I also enjoy fixing bugs because I learn something new and the experience of fixing bugs increases my knowledge of how my phone works. IMO, the most stable ROM I've used so far is CM10 - I'm currently using a nightly build and it works great so far - although it kinda has a few problems like some programs crashing unexpectedly and some phone functions not working properly. My advice is that you decide first what type of user you are and then evaluate the risks you're going to take - there's a high chance that you might brick your phone even if you've rooted a phone before as there are different specs for every phoen and one mistake could cause a serious trouble.

Rooting is easy on this phone, use galaxys3root.com for figuring out rooting and here's a link to aokp jelly bean 4.1.2 by task650 and ktoonsez it is by far in my opinion the best ROM out for the att variant right now its very light and very fast with more customods then you can imagine! Just get rooted install latest cmw recovery I reccomend the touch version and read all of task650's steps for flashing and I guarantee you will be pleased rooting this phone is definitely worth it just wait til you try it with it over clocked to 2100megahertz it crazy fast! I phone ain't got jack on this!

In my opinion, I would prefer this guide first before that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
That guide shows information that's what you're probably going to need if you don't want your phone to get out of warranty and if you want your phone's radio functioning properly. I followed that guide step-by-step and thoroughly and so far, I've achieved the desired result which is not to trip the flash counter. Also, I would also suggest that you search through the forums for revised rooting guides before you root your S3.

Here's another thought.
I came from an HD2 which from day one, I was flashing roms and kernels like crazy. I became very good at customizing and finding what I liked. I even worked very closely and aided some of the more popular rom devs. I even designed or hacked out some of my own mods including a memory management system. BUT...I could never achieve with the amazing HD2 (ahead of it' time in many ways) what the Stock Rom ICS and my S3 has done out of the box.
I meant to go to CM10 or a custom rom of some sort, but the stock rom has been a DREAM of stability which I never achieved with the HD2. It's rooted and that allows me to customize features and have more choices for apps that require root etc. I fixed a few things, added Go Launcher EX which was a huge improvement and offers awesome features, tweaked etc., and this thing runs near perfect. It's plenty fast enough. My I747m has 2gb ram and I could write a book as to why I think the 2gb makes a world of potential difference depending on setup. Also, as usual, I have frozen quite a few stock apps with Titanium Backup and replaced them with my favorite apps. (eg Handcent SMS, Kaiten Email, Boat Browser) I miss some CM features that I used to have but I have great speed, fluidity, reliability and generous flexibility....so for now...I am not doing a custom rom. FOR ME personally, I need to stay with a stable rom because I just came from near 2 years of FIXING and tweaking and killing hours upon hours.
I would be happy with just rooting it, as long as I could remove bloatware!

That's what I would do Synyster. It's great to explore, tweak, flash....etc., but if you want the best bang for the buck, best use of time, least amount of troubleshooting and testing.... imho...
- root and install custom CWM for easy flashing of updates/tweaks and for easy backup.
-buy/install Titanium Backup pro and either remove or safer....FREEZE bloatware.
There's a lot of cool things with the AOSP roms. However, I'm at the point where I've become OCD with flashing nightlies. The more I flash ROMs the more nit picky I have been. I'm looking to go back to stock firmware, debloat, root, and CWM. I think that'll be good enough for stability IMO...
I'd say so!
I'm not a PRO in Android but still, why do some people say "Stock is the way to go"? Because of stability? Less bugs?
it just works.
Because a group of coders have decided what you can or cannot do; took away your freedom. As such, we are human beings and like being confined within boundaries.
So some people like going back to stock.
If you have chosen android, root and go custom and just muck about and explore and learn; the possibilities are endless

me personally, it isn't worth trading speed and stability for a few extra buttons. but this is all opinions. maybe you should try a few things and form your own opinion of it and not worry about it.

Because no feature in a custom ROM is worth the time it will take constantly set it up, troubleshoot, endless flashing, and OCD like symptoms.
Stock JB is just too good to mess with it. I unlock and root my devices once I stop getting official updates. I have tried many ROMs, kernels on my GNEX and Nexus 7 and I always go back to stock.
Locked bootloader, no root, encrypted. It just feels good. Plus, if you purchase a new device, all you would have to do is login to your Google account and voila!

Stock ROMs are great, when JB first came out and before there were AOSP builds I rocked a rooted + BB stock image for a few weeks and thought it was great. I was able to fill in a lot of the missing ROM customization with apps (quiet hours, battery %, toggles, etc...). Smooth, fast, and reliable.
At the end of the day however a ROM built from AOSP source with some tweaks on top is the way to go for me.
Because stock is actually a really good stable feature-rich software package.
Stable, fast, no weird scripts nor heavily themed just pure android experience

for me, it just worked. Nothing had to be fiddled with and no headaches about small details. Being able to enjoy your device for what it is, is such a great feeling compared to constantly flashing updates and whatnot.
I run TSF shell launcher so no need for UI tweeks and stock is fine although I do mix it up with a Franco kernel.

I love stock ROMs. I wish more devs would simply tweak and compile straight aosp ROMs instead of cramming them full of features. Variety is a nice novelty but it wears off quickly reboot after reboot and fc after fc.
And on the same note I know its personal preference, but stock android looks so sleek and clean now that all themes seem just plain ugly. And it seems like most devs either include the theme engine or do some theming of the ROM itself. Just too much going on and affects performance/stability in my opinion.

LAst time i pointed out this fact, that i like stock more than custom rom (on GNEX), i was told to get iCab and to buy Iphone....
I like stock... Rooted, so i can remove search bar (only that). I can customize in perfect way, without obligation to flash constant updates, without getting fc-s, without taking care which kernel fits best etc...
Broke my current phone and will have to use my old Desire for a couple of weeks. Last time I used it I remember Oxygen based roms were the fastest by far. Is this still true, or is the new kitkat a true contender?
I tĥink I used a rom called nicks phone.. anyone still use it? Although when I booted up the phone a few minutes ago it had Mildwild on, but totally unconfigured so I dont think ive really used it. Seems a bit sluggish though so i will want to install something else.
So I guess super fast and snappy are my only wishes. Old or new version of android, extra features, etc doesnt matter.
As a general rule, gingerbread AOSP ROMs were 'fastest' and most stable for Desire
As a more universal rule however, it's better to try different ROMs for your usage and preferences. Others can only really give their experiences with different setups etc, and their definition of fast, stable, "amazing battery" will differ massively.
- Nandroid backup
- Full wipe install new rom
- Test
- (Optional: repeat/restore backup)
- Make up mind
I used to care about getting the latest android version, but ICS and beyond the camera was unusable and everything was just laggy. I moved back to gingerbread and have been using mildwild's rom based on oxygen for over a year. It doesn't contain very much customization, but its stable and as snappy as we're going to get on such an old phone. No one's really developing for the desire anymore so I've decided to just stop playing around with other roms since this one doesn't give me any problems. Here's a link to the rom

Thanks, just the kind of input I was looking for. Just flashed the rom and the update andit seems Lightning fast. But I cannot start Play store as it crashes. Did you experience this issue?
Could I just flash latest gapps on this install?
Had to remove the Mildwild rom because there was no way to fix Play store. Ended up installing the rom Nicks Phone instead. Blazing fast and everything works perfect. Its also based on Oxygen and I really recommend it.

Try a stock rooted rom with a2sd. E.g Gingerbread 2.3.3, there are many available and everything works.
Cheers
I'm using official oxygen ROM and it's still by far the fastest. Kk Roms all slow down and become unstable after a few days.

I can't remember where I found it. I had to search a bit. Took me even longer to find the track pad to wake mod.
I would upload a copy but I don't have a home internet plan and am really low on data right now.

For me, evervolv has done a great job. Here is the link
It is almost as snappy as oxygen and plus it has the latest android technology. No added lag after a few days whatsoever.
If Nikez fixes the kernel to be a 3.x one I think we will have a winner.
So for me, Oxygen comes first and Evervolv's KitKat comes second in terms of performance.
But I still have updated to Evervolv since Desire is now a good backup device for me that I use as a GPS etc.
I'm still on oxygen. Weeks now as my daily driver work phone and it's fast and stable. Leaving my n5 at home to keep it safe.
Unless someone can honestly say that stability has changed leaps and bounds in the past couple months then I see now point in going through the frustration of any regularly crashing kk rom on the desire. I think it's come as far as possible and just can't run the new stuff.
I'm really hoping the newer stuff like my n5 will be different and able to work reliably in a couple more years on up to date software. Hardware wise my desire is holding up like new after almost 4 years. I hate to toss it while its still good.

Got my n5, it was perfect, and people were talking about how rooting the n5's were showing slower data speeds. I didn't want to chance slower speeds and vanilla Android runs too good to play with. Missed the addons from other roms but it wasn't worth it me.

On my moto G 2014 I unlocked and rooted but didn't flash (rom scene isn't close as good as nexus I think) only used stock. Only rooted to use adaway and cf lumen. I wish we can root our phones without unlocking bootloader.

I am going to be unrooted and completely stock, like you. Marshmallow added in features that makes custom ROMs less of an appeal to me. I would like Android Pay to work
From what I can see Nexuses have no real need to have a custom rom installed (compared to other smartphones). Also Android Pay will not work if rooted.
Would people agree ?

What are the benefits of Android Pay ?
Being in Canada and not being eligible for Android pay there is no adverse affect of rooting. Ideally would be running stock + xposed/gravitybox but one can only speculate when that will be available on 6.0. Until then something ASOP or stock based that includes extended reboot menu, circle battery mod, multiwindow, and additional quick setting toggles

You can be embarrassed holding up the checkout line trying to use Android Pay while your pay card rests in your back pocket. The only use I ever see for this stuff is if you actually forget your card. Then it's great to be able to pay with a phone. And at a drive-thru or restaurant, they take your card.
Cataclysm ROM -PERIOD!
Hands down smoothest ROM I have ever used on any Nexus phone, including stock Google. It is a little different but has everything I could ever want. The battery life is amazing. I've tried others, but have stayed with Cataclysm with my N5 2013.

I'm usually stock with some kernel like franco or elemetnalx.
Also, I love GravityBox but I guess we'll have to wait a long time for that to work on M.
I'd be looking for put SlimROM on there as soon as possible, I have it all customised just the way I like it on my Nexus 5.
Hopefully none. I didn't get to play around with Marshmallow yet and I hope the new features are enough to make me stay stock. I'm a big fan of CM's Privacy Guard and I want to see how extensive the new Marshmallow one is, that and quick toggles customization. If I'm not satisfied, I'll probably flash CM 13 nightlies when they're available.
Hello everyone,
I have had my 10 for a while now and I have at the current time decided to stay stock. Much to my surprise stock has been a joy to use. This has overall been the best stock experience I have had on a device. I like it way more than my Moto X Pure, and note 4. Let me know down below. Thank you to everyone who participates.
Spent a few days flashing roms but ended up coming back to stock due to hassle-less OTAs lol
Stock as it has everything I need in terms of speed, battery, and theming.... I can get otas instant instead of waiting for a rom to be built off of it which is a huge plus in security.
Also, clean flashing and starting from scratch gets tiring after six years of rom flashing.

So far I have been pretty shocked to see how satisfied users are with stock compared to previous devices. Now are some of HTCs claims a stretch at best... Absolutely. Many seem to agree that though it is not perfect it is perfect for their needs. I must give a tip of my hat to HTC after the issues HTC has had the last couple years I am glad they were able to make a solid, dependable, smooth device.
Running LeeDroid. Everything just works well with it, the support is great, the thread is really fun to read, it works with Verizon, strips out a bunch of the bloat/junk (Verizon still needs to get their crap together), and adds some nice tweaks.
Stock is basically my goal. On all my previous phones I ran roms to get what HTC is giving us. So what I used to have to go out of my way to get, is just default on the 10, it's why I bought it. I haven't rooted yet either. I'm sure I will eventually, but right now I don't have a reason to. My phone use isn't that advanced anymore. I think I out grew modding and overly customizing. I've been messing with everything since back with windows mobile. Now I'm just at the point where I have few apps I use regularly and don't care about messing with everything anymore.
What has made the most difference overall for you? What has made you choose the rom you have? What feature did that rom give that you were looking for?
