Hi guys,
I want to buy a new phone. I discovered this amazing Zenfone 2 device (model ZE551ML, 4GB RAM, 64 GB FLASH storage), which looks it suits my needs, and I like its look too. But is this 1,5 year smarphone still worth buying in 2016? I mean, is it's performance good enough for modern apps and for future?
My demands on phone are:
- Basic smarthone functions, like messaging (I am heavy IM user), calendar, notes, ...
- Good enough performance to play some game (probably Heartstone and like this, I dont like to play GTA on my phone, I prefer play it on my gaming console instead) and to test some VR apps (probably for movies, maybe one or two games, with some cheap chinese VR headsed, I dont believe VR is ready for normal use, but I would like to try it)
- microSD card slot. It is always good to have option to extend my storage for multimedia content. Plus when I had android before, I really liked option to backup my phone to SD card before reinstalling ROM.
- I like when I am able to replace dead battery (after two years, or just when it is dead) at home. I dont mind some screwing, but I really hate "the glue-made phone" (you know, when you need to heat phone, then pry glass out, it will never be the same after putting together again - not even if authorized service will do this).
- I just hate glass-made back on phones. Just another weak spot. And it looks so ugly, because so many fingerprints on it... I like metal back case, or some resistant polycarbonate.
- It is good when phone has good support here on XDA. There is good chance I will be able to install newer version of android (AOSP or else), when manufacturer drops support (which is in many cases right after device is sold )
On the other hand, I dont care about:
- camera - I really dont need it at all. It is good there is some to photograph something instead write down a note. But if phone has no camera, I dont care. I have much better option for taking photos then my phone is.
- LTE - I dont use it. It just drains my battery. GPRS speed is good enough for IM messaging and to recieve e-mail (and no, I am not sending pictures or videos in them). And there is WiFi almost everywhere (any pub, coffee shop, workplace, everyone at home has a Wifi) if I want to stream something from Internet (oh, there is even Wifi in BUS, if I take a long journey across half my country). So no need to drain my battery at all.
- Display size - I am okay with almost everything. Just be between 4" na 7" and I am OK with it.
Will be Zenfone 2 good for these my needs? I am worried mainly about it's performance now and in the future.
Originally I had OnePlus 3 in mind (even though it has no SD card slot). But then I discovered this Zenfone, which does have SD card slot and is also nearly half the price comparing to OnePlus 3.
I looked at some antutu bechmark results for these two phones. There is tremendous difference between these two. So these are my options:
Phone | Antutu Result | Price (including taxes)
Zenfone 2 | 47 300 | 6500 CZK (approx 250 USD)
OnePlus 3 | 143 000 | 11 000 CZK (approx 430 USD), probably more for updated 3T model, 3 model is sold out
Will be this difference in synthetic test be noticalbe in real-life experience?
I hasitate if buy Zenfone 2 and be happy with it. Or waste more money (almost twice, maybe more after 3T will be announced) on OnePlus and have more performance for the future?
It all depends on what you do with your phone. There are people that have been satisfied with their Zenfone and people that haven't been satisfied and only had complaints.
Personally, I love this phone, got it 1 year ago and still works like a charm. It was cheap for what it offered and it still is. Performance is good, never had any delays or problems like freezes, crashes, restarts. If you want to compare it to another phone, I think its performance would be similar to that of a Galaxy S5 (it is a 2015 phone so can't compare it to current 2016 ones). The latest Marshmallow update also solved most problems this phone had on MM so I upgraded to it (was still on Lollipop until now) and it works great. Regarding gaming performance, it can be good or bad, depends on what game and if it has support for x86 or not. Like 90% of the games on Playstore won't have any problems with Intel x86. Regular applications will run without any problems. So considering the price and the pretty good performance, I'd say go with the Zenfone 2. The One Plus 3 is a better phone indeed, but the price is almost double.
Regarding your Antutu score, no idea why yours is so low, mine is 67000+ (2.3 Ghz version, 32 GB storage and 4 GB RAM).
Oh and I will also add:
- as you see the phone has support on XDA
- from what I heard, battery isn't too hard to take out (but still non-removable, One Plus 3 has non-removable as well)
- it has VR support, Asus also has a VR application named Zenfone VR. Haven't tested the VR on this phone yet, gonna buy a VR set for myself next month.
- it has a few cute functions like resize for the screen so that you can use the phone with one hand more easily (one hand mode), draw letters on the turned off screen to open apps directly, Cover Mode (if you have a cover with a circle so that you can see clock and certain functions in it)
If you like Intel chipset, 4 hour SOT, and Asus / Zen system, it is still a nice phone for nice price.
The one+ 3 is not for sale anymore, and the 3T is not available until the end of the month. But it will be almost double the money...
So get this phone and stick with it's curiosities, or wait for ever because there is always a newer, better phone in a couple of weeks...

I had I for more than a year for more than a year of very intensive use (loading up to 270 app version s). I would definitely buy again.
I just had problems after it dropped violently on the ground but I insist build quality is good.
After full reinstall I changed it to ww from cn and with little bugs (camera lost) it works really well.
Where did you read that (links please) and what was the reasoning behind it? As of now, I can't think of any reason why this (or any other) phone would become useless in the coming months. Even if it was an Android 4.4 based phone. I'm not talking about getting updates, but phones don't just stop working (unless they break down).
In my opinion, not anymore. I'm actually a ZE551 user for 3 months now and am satisfied by it, but the specs in this phone is not a viable option anymore. The intel processor can even hold you back sometimes despite its "native support" for ARM apps. (take a look at the Pokemon GO craze earlier)
And if you are 3D gaming it can also be a setback due to the GPU included in this phone. The PowerVR GPU is a 2012 technology, and this means that with the future games this may not even suffice later on. Even some games recently released cant even play smoothly on this phone now (Titan Quest was said to be slow on this phone, though I havent seen it myself)
But the 4G support aint bad at all, and the 3-way call feature may attract you (something I never used). Most of the other things from various reviews still ring true (bloatware, zenui, camera, etc) but the thing is, on the same price point you may find a better option than the Zenfone 2 in this day and age.
If you can get it at a low price (around 150 usd) it is still worth buying.
If you need it just for the basic stuff (phone, messaging, browsing, navigation, music, videos etc.) it still is a great phone and with it's chipset and 4gb of ram it will sure run flawlessly for at least a year or two.
In my opinion, this phone is great as a business phone / second phone. It just works and nothing more. I got bored with it
If you could get it with a slightly lower price, it's still worth buying. Quality is great overall.

going for a 4 gb ram model, u have to pay a bomb to get those high end phones which have charger lock and other things ... i dont regret buying this masterpiece, im coming from a background of Sony and Samsung phones to top it all .... i still feel this is the best of the phones i have considering the battery and the ram and also i am using a 128gb sdxc card which is going on for a year almost... I have this phone since August 2016 and it never disappointed me. The processor is pretty good, you can run almost anything without any problems, the 4GB still is and will always be useful, the storage is big (i have the 32GB version, which is a lot for me and i never filled it). Sure, it hasn't been updated to 6.0 but I bought it with the thought that it might never get upgraded anyway..and even so 5.0 is still good and never had problems on it so far. I still recommend it even 1 year after I made the purchase. The price of the phone also went down (it's like 30% cheaper compared to when I bought it).
Definitely worth buying if you can find it around $150. The problem is that there are some excellent phones with bigger batteries and faster processors like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro for just under $200 that blow this one away. Having said that I still have mine (15 months now) and it's on Marshmallow Beta. I have no plans on replacing it in the foreseeable future though my primary phone is now the Xiaomi.
for me? i think so.
the most important phone attributes imo are:
2 day+ easy battery
fast enough cpu to stay smooth 99% of the time
1080p screen, it's enough
NFC - i'm in the UK so android pay works everywhere and i can't live without it
fingerprint reader
slightly above average camera ( not *that* important to me - average is ok )
is there another phone out that offers all the above?
The only complain I have is that the bottom part of the touch screen broke after 3 month. I sent for warranty and they got it fixed
I think if you're basing it on price then pretty much yes.
Got mine for £200 and it's a bargain given everything it has. Love the AMOLED screen too.
It's a great phone. I just wish the manufacturer was someone else than Lenovo.
- Would be nice with better customer service/support and at least two major updates.
- Not a fan of the none-flashable modem files once the bootloader is unlocked. Should anything go wrong (for instance during an upgrade) you could get huge problems and have to replace the phone entirely.
- I don't know the general faulty rate of smartphones, but Lenovo has yet to impress me. Connection issues mostly I believe.
Unreliable is probably the word I'm searching for.
I don't know why other manufacturers persist on insufficiently small batteries. It's a smartphone for Christ's sake! You're going to use it all day, every day.

I am a currently using Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Love the phone EXCEPT the battery. in terms of Screen-On time, It hardly lasts for 3.5 hours. I use my phone a lot and have to charge it 3 to 4 times a day. Moreover, there is no SD card slot and am hanged with 32 GB storage ONLY.
I was in market looking for a new phone by replacing note 5. Things I want in new phone:
a) bigger screen
b) bigger battery
c) Dual sim
d) SD card support
e) Ram over 4 GB
f) Camera with OIS
g) Under $300
h) S-Amoled Screen
Now it ticks many boxes except point F and H. I am huge on camera. I love taking pics and videos. The lack of OIS is sorta deal breaker for me but IF the camera works really well without it, I can live.
Anyhow, I want your suggestions, moving from Galaxy Note 5 to Xaomi, is it a wise decision?
100% wise decision. Order 6gb/128gb variant with xiaomi.eu rom from TradingShenzhen (theirs is the one with least headache and hiccups), and I'll walk you through the process. We have excellent camera and even better quality with camera2api enabled via magisk(root) for Google camera.

I was planning to get it from Dubai. I am visiting there in January. I hope to get it under some deal(s).
You think the price will be even more stable (drop) by Jan?
And by the way, my experience with non-flagship phones has been bizarre. I mean after 1.5 years their parts start failing like microphone etc. I mean companies use really mediocre parts for non-flagship phones.

Dubai is overpriced. I'd avoid the wait and order online and have it in a few days. That's just me. Prices will stay around the same. They've hovered around $300-350 US for some time. No issues with this phone so far. No complaints either from month long users. Xiaomi is on another level. My bro has a mi book pro that is running flawless. It's all in how you care for your products. I would never recommend anything bad to anyone especially if not owning or wanting it for myself. I'm a heavy user from rooted Note 8 to rooted Mi Max 3. Absolutely no regrets.

Coming from a Note 4 ( destroyed it by accident) The thing that strikes me most is the good build quality and the brightness of the huge screen.The screen quality also seems very good compared to an amoled screen. Obviously no stylus support on it.The Camera seems good in the light, but needs to be improved in the dark...to much noise.However there are options with the Camera app to have manual control or install the Open Camera app.Screen on time using that 5500mah is also very good....just make sure you've got large hands and large pockets

The battery life is very good , i only got like 5-6 hours screen on time , but please note im using it outside with mobile data , bluetooth gps always on and the sreen is nearly max brightness, the S G note 4 lasted 1-1.5 hours with the same settings / apps
Call quality is good

The ringtones and notification sound are not that loud as the S G note 4

Hello, I don't know if this is the right subforum to ask this but I'm not around here too often so I'm a bit lost. I had a Samsung Galaxy S8 (exynos) for almost two years, financed with a carrier and with a final pay of €170 or else return it (similar to a lease?). However the battery was showing some age already so I decided to put it on the market and sold it for €220 (so I'm gonna pay the €170 but at least I got some extra money for the new phone).
I'm looking for something different now. I didn't take advantage of the powerful soc in the S8 as I barely played any games, and I value battery life a lot more now. My usage is pretty simple; mostly twitter and web browsing, and a bit of twitch/youtube/netflix. Camera is also not a priority for me although it seems like these days most mid range phones come with pretty good cameras as well. My budget is about €250, but the less, the better.
My current options are Xiaomi Mi A3, Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite and Realme 5 Pro (but of course I gladly appreciate alternatives). I have a problem and it's that while I like 'almost' stock Android (like the one in the Mi A3), I also value the features that some modifications like MIUI bring; dual apps, higher brightness, etc... So I find myself unable to decide. My doubts:
For Mi A3: according to reviews the screen is lacking, in resolution and brightness (only 350 nits, and too high in night conditions). I went to a Xiaomi Store near my place a couple of days ago and I didn't notice much difference with the resolution, but I couldn't test the brightness. Felt pretty snappy on the store.
For Mi 9 Lite: the price is a bit higher but if it's worth it I'll pay it. Seems like it has everything I like; battery life, AMOLED 1080p screen, and a decent SoC. Also 6GB of RAM... (is 4GB going to be enough in the near future? Like 2-3 years from now?). This would be my choice but if the differences are not much perhaps I can save a bit of money with any other phone.
For Realme 5 Pro: I know it belongs to Oppo (well, and many more brands), but I really don't know how the support is going to be in the future, as in Android upgrades and stability. Also it seems like ColorOS has a lot of bloatware, I don't mind a heavy mod of Android but I already had Facebook and some Microsoft apps in my S8 and I disliked it a lot. I can probably disable them but... On a positive note, seems like the 4/128 version has a good price (€199) and should have a similar performance compared to the other two, specially the Mi 9 Lite. However, no AMOLED screen...
I hope you guys can help me decide because I'm currently frozen about which one to get, although I think I can't go wrong with any of them. I'm currently using a Jiayu F1 so I'm in a bit of pain... Regards!
Trying to decide which device to get to replace my current OnePlus 5T(4 years old) which is getting a little too old for day2day usage.
After some intensive research I've ended up with 2 models: OnePlus 9 PRO 12GB|256GB and Samsung S21 Plus 8GB|256GB.
They all have their Pro's & Con's but in the end they score the same for me and I'm having a little hard time to decide between them.
Main things that I would like from a new smartphone in this price area (high-end):
Very good CPU (to be able to keep up with software in the next few years)
Storage bigger than 128 (it is OK, but I need to clean up and backup in cloud all the time)
Slim device - Do not like very thick devices ( ~8mm is ok)
Display size 6.7" - I want to try a bigger display this time (will return if I cannot get used to it and look for something more compact in that case Samsung S21 standard or Asus Zenfone 8.
Good display quality & 120Hz, preferably auto-adjustable
At least 8GB of RAM, current device has 8GB and didn't had any issues so far with memory
Connectivity to be top of 2021: Wifi 6, BT 5, 5GB, etc.
Good battery life - I would expect something similar to current device and not to have battery anxiety
Fast Charge if possible - but depends on battery (if battery is good this is not a must)
Camera/Video - moderate expectations, but to still be relevant to the price range
Good software support - for at least 3 years
Good OS without bloatware or things that cannot be removed/cleaned
Prefer unlocked, although I've always used Orange.
Could be more, but these are most important I think.
I plan to keep the device for at least 3 years.
Both are priced the same in my country, ~800 Euro.
Which one do you recommend? If possible why?
Oneplus is not the same anymore. I bought my 9 pro on sale recently, and I am extremely disappointed. Build and hardware are solid, but software is absolute crap, full of obvious bugs, that are not being fixed for a long time already. Battery life is bad, I'm getting like 6 hours SOT.
Also, Samsung has released Android 12 for S21 already.

Almost none Bloatware. Samsung is FUll of it.
9 Pro Anndroid 12 Open Beta 1 & 2 works Fine.
On 9 Pro you can install Global Color Os Android 12 stable. Also works very well & have more option that Oxygen OS.
On 9 Pro you can unlock botloader, you can root.
I've owned 2 Samsung, Nothing on XDA for Global-Snapdragon, but full for Korea-Exynos.
xPan mode for camera on 9 Pro is absolut Great.
I use european 9 Pro.
The 9 Pro still has a lot to offer... try it out and take it for a spin!

Not sure that I want to manually install the Color OS 12 (Not that much of a fan).
If we are talking about software, from what I saw in the reviews One UI 4 seems a lot better and has more support from Samsung than ever.
This cannot be said for the OnePlus with their Oxygen OS 12. One of the main reasons I liked OnePlus devices was for their simplicity and their resemblance with Android Vanilla. I know I don't get this with Samsung also, but their directions seems a lot more clearer than what OnePlus is doing. Very unsure what Oppo impact will be on OnePlus in the future.
I'm more inclined for Samsung at this moment. I've even had the chance to go to a store and test an S21+ device directly. Seems really nice & I like that the overall size of the device is similar to my OnePlus 5T, although the display is bigger. From Specs OnePlus is a little bigger & thicker.
Better hold your money a little and buy Note 22 Ultra.

Is very simple to flash Color OS. You just do an upgrade from stable 11.2.8.8 or Open beta 1 or 2.
I've own Samsung note 10+ 5g, with SnapDragon cip.. Best looking phone ever! But slow software. Too Much Bloatware. OnePlus 8 Pro flies compared to 10+ 5g.
Samsung 20+ 5g , with SnapDragon cip. Phone was fast, but battery drain Super Mega Fast. I sold it after a week...
I Never buy a Samsuung with Exynos cip !!!
Also, some phones with SnapDragon 888 may or not have heating problem .

I think the S21+ with OneUi should be a lot better than what Samsung had for software in the past.
I was a little worried about the new Exynos chipset, but from the reviews & synthetic tests it seems to be much better than previous generations and almost the same as SS (not sure in daily usage would see a difference). In my local market I cannot get an S21+ with SS and have legal warranty and for a phone this expensive I do not want to risk it and end up with a device with defects.
At this price point honestly I do not want to pay solely for hardware as if this was the case I would have gotten a cheaper Android device (Realme GT for example) and flash a custom rom on it.
I think I will give S21+ a try and get it from a local vendor (having it even lower than the OP 9 Pro) where I can return it in 14 days. In those days I can clearly see if the device has any issues and maybe even try out the new OneUI 4.
I think that's a wise decision. The OnePlus 9 PRO is my first OnePlus device, and I think it will be my last. Apparently I'm too late to the game and missed the golden era.
A lot of mixed reviews. I used to own Samsung a long time ago, but HATED the fact that they had sooo much bloatware on the phone and if you'll be spending that kind of money they also made it very difficult to root and be able to do what you want on it. The perks of Oneplus is you basically get a vanilla Android OS with little to no bloatware, it's solid hardware, and they actually support modding it. Rooting it is pretty straight forward. I purchased my OP9 Pro for a really good deal ($650) and I have the Global version LE2125. I honestly have no problems with it. I'm running the stock Oxygen OS 11.2.8.8.LE15AA and I use the Omega Kernel 5.4.6.1. I don't play any games on it, but I do use it regularly for texting, internet, social media, phone calls, pictures (typical stuff) and I get over a day of use on it.
Don't forget charging !

Indeed, current software is still good, although Oxygen OS 11 is not what it used to be and it doesn't feel as smooth as Oxygen 10 does. The change in Oxygen 12 will be basically a change to ColorOS which I don't think will ever be the same for OP. And I'm afraid OnePlus will be worse with each iteration as it will get closer & closer to Oppo & ColorOS (which is not bad, but for entry/mid-range phones, I think).
Samsung does not have that much bloatware on their latest devices and OneUI 4 seems to be much smoother & with better support.
Honestly, if OP didn't had this software change and if it didn't get that bad with their software support I would have went for the OP without any hesitation.
Regarding rooting, I would prefer not to be forced to do this for high-end phones. It would be nice to be able to do it, but that is a different approach. From what I saw S21 can have it's bootloader unlocked and the process is not difficult.
I usually root my phones only after the warranty expires & if the software gets outdate (no more support or it slows down too much).
Received the S21+ today and will see how it feels the following days.
OnePlus 9 Pro increased the price and it is now above 1000 Euro. At that price it is not a good option, it should be around 800 Euro for a good value in my opinion.
If I'm not 100% happy and the price for OP gets lower again I will buy it and return Samsung device.
But will see how things go these days, I have 14 days to return it if I'm not happy with it.

I have no Problem with my OP9 Pro. So many write about "bugs" but I never had one. All my messengers (WA, Telegram, Signal and Threema) work fine. Calls over VoLTE work fine, WiFi Speed is good. System with Bluspark Kernel work very well - ~8-9h SOT.

Thank you for your thoughts on this device. I'm glad that it works good and you don't have issues with it.
Sadly, the fact that others have, only suggests there is some core issues with how the devices are assembled/configured and there is a high change it would have issues.
You get very good SOT, might I ask what apps you have and what is your usual usage of the phone(browsing, social, video, gaming)?
Did you try the new Oxygen OS 12 ? This is one of the biggest concerns I have as even OP fans have complaint about this.

First, I dont play any games. I have a PC for gaming I dont use any social media BS like Facebook aka "Meta" (what a joke) or insta or twitter. I watch some YT videos and use a lot FireFox for browsing, but no heavy stuff which afford a lot of CPU power.
OOS is ATM not a option. Its still in a beta state, and I don't really need A12 - like I dont need Windows 11 in this state. The Phone is not bad or unusable with A11.
Also,
Now I have to consider the price difference: 770 Euro for Samsung S21+ vs 870 Euro for OnePlus 9 Pro, as the prices seem to have went up after Black Friday sales.

This is true sadly. I've had problems with warp charge not working and others have had different problems too. And others no problem at all.
Also OOS is really an average OS overall. Nothing to write home about. But custom roms are available (A11) which make it a decent device. Just not the flagship it was suppose to be...
