what is considered a system apk? framework-res.apk? com.htc.resources.apk?
all files with com. in front of them? all files in the /system/app/ ? I'm using apk_manager_4.9 to experiment with some simple theming and at one point during zipping it ask if it's a regular apk or a system apk. I haven't a clue. I've only messed with Gmail.apk and I considered it a system apk from the file location it was in. Did I guess right?
In apk manager system apk is a question that, if answered yes, will prompt to keep other files (such as the signature) when recompiling the apk.
In apk manager there is a little hint about when you would choose yes or no to system app. It just takes a little bit of reading.
When in doubt just choose yes to system app and the follow up question. When the apk is recompiled you will have "unsignedxxx.apk". Copy that unsigned file somewhere and then sign the apk. Now you have a signed and unsigned version of the recompiled apk. If the unsigned version doesn't work try the signed version. If that doesn't work then you need to go back and see what you changed that might be causing the issue.
thanks, good info. I can work with that.
Which one would be the first pick to try to install, signed or unsigned. Guess I should go find out the difference.

I'm running the gingerbread 2.3 and for some reason now I can't install apk files. My phone was acting up so the sprint store set it back to factory; I installed astro file manager and appinstaller but when downloading apk files from the evo itself, I keep getting the content unsupported message. Before I was on gingerbread, I had a different apk installer but I can't seem to find anything else in market other than the appinstaller (using the new market) and unknown sources is checked under settings
any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm having the same issue. havnt yet rooted my desire hd, dunno if this is my prob, only new to android, previous winmo user. can u let me knw if find a solution, and visa versa. cheers man
I use Super Box. It's an app in the market with a number of different tools such as apps2sd, apk installer, apk uninstaller, wipe cache, memory/cpu/battery logs, etc. One of those tools is an apk installer. It scans your whole SD card and displays all the apk files it finds so that you can easily select which ones to install. I'm not sure if you're having a system issue or an app issue. Try Super Box and see if you get the same message.
By the way, I used to use Astro all the time but have since switched to Ghost Commander for my file manager needs.
Edit: If your phone isn't rooted then you wont be able to tamper with any files within your root folder.

grab: //goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110729-signed.zip
Install a file manager (or mail yourself the relevant APKs)
Install the Google Services Framework apk, as well as, say, the Books app.
Open books. Add your Google account. If you have apks for other Google apps, you can install them and they should behave.
GMail works fine. Maps works fine. Market falls over on download.
Which one is gmail and which one is google reader? What abotu voice?

nm - grabbed the wrong file
Hmmm...I downloaded the zipfile, copied the unzipped files over to the Kindle, and tried to install using ES File Explorer. I was able to install YouTube just fine, but when I tried to install the "GoogleServicesFramework.apk" file, the installation failed with an "Application Not Installed" error message. Any ideas?
Yes, I do have the "Unknown Applications" permission set correctly, as I've sideloaded and installed a bunch of other stuff.

I've already side-loaded dropbox to speed things up a bit over here.

I have the same issue
I'm at work and my kindle is supposed to arrive today... but now that there is root, has anyone tried to install gapps by restoring them via titanium backup?
"Can't establish a data connection to the server"
Update 3:
Working Google Apps:
Voice
Talk
Maps
YouTube
Reader
Google+
Books
Gmail
Partially Working:
Market (Force Closes when updates or downloads are attempted)
UPDATE 2: All of my gapps are working now with the exception of Market. Any ideas as to how to get market running?
UPDATE: I was able to sign into my account, but the only app that doesn't force close is books. Market and gmail both force close when I try to open them.
I am online and able to surf the internet right now on my fire just fine . . . but for some reason when I try to sign into my google account I get the error
"Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server.
His could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues, call Customer Care."
Any ideas?
I am rooted and have BusyBox installed
Everything is working great for me except Talk, which won't install.
As far as the market, I have no problem installing it, but it doesn't create an icon. If I choose to open the market immediately after installing, however, it opens, and works flawlessly.
For those with the market issue, you may want to chmod the vending.apk to 6775 to correct permissions. Maybe that'll help? You'll have to do it locally with a terminal emulator though, I've had no luck getting ADB to give me root access.
The reason I mention chmod is, I had originally pushed the files out to the system/app folder manually, and set permissions, but I had no way to open the apps that way, since the fire is very picky on what it gives icon space to, unlike vanilla android.

This worked PERFECT. market works now - installed the apk by opening it from file manage on the kindle, then navigated to /data/app and fixed permissions - as to your google talk issue, I just copied talk.apk directly into /system/app, fixed permissions, and rebooted, and it showed up in ADW Launcher as installed and worked perfectly - doesnt show up in the kindle launcher tho.

Ah, makes sense. I haven't considered installing any other launchers yet.
I wonder what it is about the stock launcher that suppresses installed apps from showing up. It makes no sense to me that gmail and maps would show up as they should, but not the marketplace and talk.
Ok got Talk working perfectly. What's the correct permissions for the market?

did you install it by copying over the apk to the device and selecting it, or copy it directly to /system/app - it force closed on me if i copied it to /system/app, but if i just copied it over to the internal sd, selected it and installed, and then fixed the permissions of the installed vending.apk in /data/app, it worked.

I'm curious, does anyone have calendar working and properly syncing yet? That's one I haven't been able to figure out.
I've been looking through my phone for the path to the default "Messaging" application. I don't use it, and have it disabled, though my rom has a feature which I would like to test out some sym-links to link the default app location to google voice somehow.
Could someone direct me to the default messaging app location?
in root explorer
System/app/mms.apk
Maybe I'm not following completely, but that is the apk, which allows the app to be installed. Where is the binary that is actually executed when the messaging application is opened?
If you extract the file then everything that comprises the apk. Will available for viewing.

This I know. I'm trying to find the binary which executes when a specific application is called. Is there not a single binary which executes? Is this what you are saying? Are you saying when I tap "Messaging" the apk previously specified extracts and runs some binary contained in the apk?
You just blew my mind lol Sorry bud I thought you were asking much simpler.

No, there is not a single binary.
The apk includes the resources and runtime code required to execute and draw on screen the messaging app. Some apps have a dependency on libraries (*.so files) and for system apps these are stored in /system/lib/ - in user apps they're distributed within the apk.

Do you know what can I do in order to solve this issue ?
I suppose that this apk has native library compiled for ARM architecture. I not sure that the Fire TV is arm-based and then, there are probably conflicts.
If it is a free app,try getting a copy from 1mobile or aptoide,appchina,wandoujia,slideme,voga360,etc.
I had that message when trying to install Dolphin Browser (evozi'd) from the Play Store.
Then I tried getting the apk from 1mobile or another place and it installed.

Thanks, I already tried without success.
When I use adbFire, I do not get any message but it need a lot of time, and show a successful message.
But after that, I cannot found the application and it is not in the list of installed applications.
