phone keeps getting ads! - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I'll be sitting at the home screen and ads will pop up and open my chrome browser to the ads page. It will also tell me I have a virus. What is the deal? Please help!

Sorry for posting this in the wrong spot please move!

Might be a rogue app! Uninstall any recent apps, see if it stops

This is an example! I have not downloaded any new apps!

Maybe a newly updated app gone rogue. Rogue app, absolutely no doubt...

100% rogue app. Any music downloader, non playstore movie streaming, or "unknown source" installed apps?

I've had the exact same thing which I seem to have fixed.
Firstly turn off sync on chrome.
On your laptop and any other devices you use chrome on delete your history, cache and cookies.
Delete the same on your phone. Turn sync back on.
You should now be issue free, apparently there is malware that can target cookies so the above should work.
If you only have the issue on WiFi and not 3/4G then you should consider deleting your network settings on your phone found in settings. You may have an infected dns.
Hope this helps.

Inverted Apps

Just got this phone. I will be porting all of my evo inverted apps over. A lot of them work already just finishing up Google+ and the market.

Oh hell yes . I've been using your inverted apps for a while now, started on the OG Epic 4g, now with the ET4g. Congrats on your new device!
I assume you'd have to uninstall the app first and then install the inverted version?
And how do I uninstall gmail? Would I just delete the .apk in root explorer?
Really glad to hear you got this phone. Thanks again for your work

Deleting the apk and putting mine in it's place with root explorer should work. I always use adb to push it there. It will have to be installed this way for now, at least until I get an updated flash-able zip for this phone.

Damn. That didn't work for me and I can't get gmail to install at all.
A titanium restore of gmail didn't work either. Tried grabbing again from the market and when I try installing it, it says "application already exists".
Argh!!! How do I fix this?
EDIT: It came up with a reboot. Phew!

The newest version of Google+ has a different setup for the main stream, I am in the works of flipping that over then it should be good to go. I am hoping to get it done in the next day or two.
I assume the rom has to be deodexed to flash any app that downloads in the form of a zip? Such as the Google search bar? Or can it be install with root explorer?

Facebook app looks great. When you first install it, everything is great, and the news feed is inverted. But once you exit out of the news feed, and reenter it....the background goes white again.
Thanks for all the work.

I have never tried to install them on an odexed ROM so I am not sure if it will work or not.
Yeah the feed is pulled straight from m.facebook.com so unless facebook wants to invert there mobile page that is the way it has to be.

Very nice, I'll test it out. Thanks.
Looks like Google+ and Docs are going to take a min. Don't know if it is a root/ROM/ or phone issue but neither docs nor Google+ will sync anything once they are installed. Just sits on connecting...
I have tried decompiling and then recompiling without changing anything and I still get this issue. If anyone knows a fix to this I would love to know what it is.

Where did the XDA forum app go?

Hi,
is it only me or has the XDA Forum app been removed from the android market?
Thanks for feedback,
It's gone for me, as well. I couldn't find it on my Rezound, my Kindle Fire, my Eris, or my PC. Thankfully, I had it backed up in Titanium Backup. The odd thing is that if I restore it with TiBu, the app will show as having an available update and the update will download and install normally. Even after the app is installed and updated, it still fails to show in the market if I do a search.
me too, tried to get it on my new Note, but couldn't find it so have to use browser.
It's been removed for the moment...

Please also make it available on an alternate market.
I bought XDA Premium before Sep. 2011 but since then Google has changed their checkout method so I can no longer buy any applications from the Market.
I don't think prohibiting users from countries based on Google's bizarre policy is consistent with the XDA spirit.
yeah I went to manually find the APK, and all I could get was the premium version. I'm not trying to warez it, lol, so I just said forget it

I actually see no reason why the free apk couldn't just be hosted directly from this site, in addition to the market.

And you need to learn how to take a deep breath, count to ten, and consider that maybe, just maybe, I spent half an hour trying to find the answer to my question before finding this thread. Someone else was kind enough to post an answer to the question, so your post was unecessary. Go yell at noobs for posting Qs in the dev forums or something.

Firstly, this belongs in the Q&A section. Secondly, try to uninstall the app then reinstall through the play store.
Sorry, if a mod could move it that would be great. I did reinstall it, still tries to download. I can force stop it by force stopping downloads, but as soon as anything else starts downloading it just restarts the attempted download of Facebook too.

That's odd. Try breaking the market link via rom toolbox.
Go into app manager and long press on Facebook to get the option.

I'm seeing this on my droid RAZR m as well. Its Verizon, I'm wondering if this is carrier specific. Still trying to to figure out how to make it go away. I don't have FB at all.
Is just an internal fb update.... Facebook 2.3
I saw it earlier and got a lil worry so i looked it up and found this forum!!! so i did what i read... Open download manager and then go to other downloads you should see it here just send it to trash and it fixed it! but then i my sister showed me the same thing and we just waited, finally it downloaded all of it (around 15 MB) and gave her a facebook update screen! saying it was a new version (facebook 2.3) that enables you to mark as spam posts and other stuff!!! NOW i feel like a [email protected] for reading about it and erasing it... hope it comes back on the market as a regular update and that some of you read this and just be patient! :fingers-crossed: GOOD LUCK AND IF SOMEBODY HAS A APK VERSION OF IT ALREADY PLS REPOST! THANX

I had the same problem . I yesterday externally installed Swype kepboard and this problem seems to have arised since then. Not sure however if i can directly blame this on the Swype. Anyways, one sure thing is that this download is unlikely to be a genuine facebook update & its more likely to be a spyware of some kind.
This is what i did & it seems to have stopped popping up since then. Hold the Download till u get an "App Info" option. Then click disable instead of Force stop. It has'nt restarted for me since then .

The scary thing here is it really is a genuine facebook update; see the links I have included below. They are going around the Play store for this and future updates. Which is scary enough on its own because a smart hacker could mimic this in the near future to inject malware. Also, in my case the update failed and now I can't use the version from the play store or this one.
I have complained to Google play about this because they are violation the developer terms; I also provided "feedback" to Facebook! I would recommend others complain to both also to let them know how their customers feel.

Go into setting/ apps and clear data and cache of youtube

Did you find any apps/.apks that are CheetahMobile/CleanMaster crapware?
I didn't see anything obvious (on my T-Mobile variant),but,I suspect some of the apps with the "Smart" in the app/.apk name may be their garbage.
I'm hoping this crapware,if it's installed, isn't hidden as it is on the AT&T/VZW models of the Note 5.

Yeah it's not the greatest but it still works well in chrome. Also you get to use everything that you normally do. I personally set up a button widget to turn the VPN on or off.
FWIW, I have the paid version of adguard and find it works extremely well. With paid version you have https ad blocking, in-app ad blocking, and some other useful features. I forget if these additional features are available on free version. But for non rooted phones, I think this is a great option.
Also, Crystal for Samsung Browser will block ads in their app. I don't really have a need for it but it's there anyway lol.

It's super important that you reenable all apps that you've disabled with Package Disabler before you do any update. I learned that the hard way once and my phone was all screwy until I did a factory reset.
