Happy owner of a Focus here:
Just have a quick question regarding sound settings or an equalizer of some sort in WP7 - unfortunately I think I have the answer after a brief search. Is there no way to at least bump up the bass settings? When listening to music, sound comes out a little "low" for my tastes (but not unacceptable). When watching video however, the sound comes out really low, even when maxed out.
Can anyone confirm there's no way to adjust this in WP7 settings?

Yeah, HTC have an app where you can do that so either we need to wait for an app (don't know if that would happen as HTC would get special access to the phone probably)
Interesting... I guess it's more likely that MS or Samsung would put something out?
yea only for HTC devices.. like when u open market using a htc you would see HTC apps.. eq its there.. does help on my hd7...a lot...but hey u have a lot more features/settings to play on your camera than i do.. hd7 is very limited .

The Motorola Defy, when used with PowerAMP, seems to sound reasonably good.
But... when you adjust PowerAMP's preamp and the EQ and get the volume to sound a lot higher than what you get with the stock player/media effects ... some songs sound distorted.
On the other hand... I've read about the Samsung Galaxy S and it's apps "Voodoo Sound" and "Galaxy Tuner".
Those apps seem to manipulate the hardware directly (instead of software preamp & EQ like PowerAMP seems to do). Apparently the Samsung has a dedicated Wolfson audio chip, so I suppose that's why they can do all of that.
So... the question is... can something of this be applied to a Motorola Defy? Even if it doesn't have any dedicated sound chip, could the hardware be manipulated in some way to achive something like what the Samsung apps do ?
I'm also remembering some mp3 players that could deliver more volume, but due to local european laws were forced to lower their output power... and then some people hacked the firmware and "erased" this limitation.
What I would like is, basically, more power, more volume thru the earphones. Could this be possible for the Motorola Defy ?

Have you messed up your hearing somehow? Don't you use earplugs or headphones? Do you listen to music in very noisy environments... while vacuum cleaning perhaps?
That said, perhaps you could be a bit more specific as to what the applications for the Galaxy do exactly if you want to mimic their functionality on the Defy.
I think he's refering to hacks that adjust the frequency respon or/and adjust the software directly tied to the hardware for a more hi-fi experience. Not just meaning getting higher volume or changing eq-settings.

I don't know of any mods/hacks but PowerAMP is able to play flac files.
Cyanogenmod includes a dsp app.
It has equalizer etc. pp.
You can also use it on other roms with root, afaik... (had it on hd2 sense rom) just google.

OK, I'll explain it to satisfy your curiosity
I usually play music when I'm working in loud or busy environments and I need to "focus" (intended pun, as I'm a photographer). I can't use canal earphones, so I sometimes need to use higher volume levels... wich the Defy doesn't seem to have, or at least not without distortion/clipping.
Regarding being more specific... don't you find specific enough the names of the 2 apps I've already given ?

Galaxy Tuner
They work together and can adjust the Galaxy's headphone amplifier analog gain, thus increasing the volume noticiably without distortion, or so it seems.
These programs adjust some parameters in the Galaxy's audio chip, so the quality of the resulting sound is apparently better than waht you get from software EQ.

I can live with Defy's audio quality, but I'd want to prevent the distortion and the clipping I get when using PowerAMP to increase the volume.

Exactly that. I want to know If it is possible to do that (or something close to that) with Defy's audio hardware.

The DSP app makes software adjustments. It can't prevent clipping or distortion... it can do a better job than PowerAMP, at best, though I really doubt that.

In short: I wan't to know if it's possible to adjust parameters of the Defy's audio hardware to improve the sound. What "normal" audio apps do is simply adjust the audio data via software manipulation, but they're bounded by what the hardware allows.
I want to tweak the hardware (or, better said, the software that the hardware runs internally)
So... the "developers" part of this forum is just a wish... nobody knows a word about this ?

I have the One X and unless you have earphone's plugged in (really nice sound and loud).
It's the external speaker that is pretty quite, is there any apps or anything I can do to make it louder.

DSP manager works better I think on Sense 4.0, just raise the treble in the equaliser.

Any luck with the apps? I find it quiet too.... Also in the car for navigation the max volume is too quiet....
Is your phone rooted or not? Not sure if it has to be to sort the volume out?

Yeah, external speaker of one x is lame compare to my old phone Sony arc. I tried playing the same mp3 song with them at same time both on maximum volume and really noticed the big difference.

Volume+ can boost it a bit (not by very much though, DSPManager will probably be a little louder on this phone). The only problem is that the speakers crackle and 'pop' after a sound is played, probably a combination of firmware and terrible quality HTC speakers.
I have noticed that something is compressing the hell out of the external speaker too (probably 'beats'), which seems to be limiting the volume.

Hi,
I am using DSP manager and it has made a difference, unlike volume+ it doesn't over do it and sound like it's going to damage the speaker.
The thing that annoys me is plug headphone's in and it is so loud and a brilliant sound for a phone.
My phone is rooted but I don't think it needs to be done.

It's not as loud as Xperia S for sure (the loudest Android phone ever) but it's louder than Sensation and Nexus 1 out of the box.
I don't have a One X yet but tried it in several shops,volume+ and DSP will surelly give the extra power to hear your phone ring in the busy streets.

Works greats, but the only problem that is I've lost the Beats Audio driver which came with Sense 4.0 and I'd quite like it back.

which worked perfectly to begin with, but shortly after my system became completely unstable with apps constantly crashing, forcing me to wipe my phone and start over.
So does anyone know of a solution to this? Or am I just gonna have to wait a while for a stable release, given how new Jelly Bean is?

Beats Audio is prepared for Sense... And IceColdJelly is completely NonSense ROM. You have to make a decision:
1. Beats audio with any Sense ROM (Stock or Custom)
2. IceColdJelly without Beats Audio.
That's all....
If you want IceCOldJelly.... Just reflash the ROM. It will be OK, I guess.

Really? That sucks :crying: Other people seem to have had have luck on non-Sense phones, based on the reviews of the app I linked to. But in that case, I'll stick with Jelly Bean. HTC will be updating the One X eventually anyway...

Since Beats audio really doesn't improve anything but the bass, cant you get the same result with an eq?
Power amp app is all you need.
Use this mod linked below (be sure to make a nandroid backup before you flash it). It has beats audio and a lot of other mods as well that you can select while installing the mod.

The sound with the latest version (14) is pretty good and offers beats audio from Rezound.
Use it with a player like DoubleTwist or PowerAmp which has it's own equalizer, and you can get great audio quality on your music.
Also, System wide sound equalizers and DSP manager doesn't seem to have any effect on the sound on AOSP based ROMs.
Beats audio is effectively dynamic EQ, little more. Unlike a static EQ, it's trying to EQ based on 'beats'. At a very crude level, it's boosting certain frequencies when they are needed... e.g Bass on a musical 'beat' / peak. It's a little more complex than that - it's signal processing similar to an 'exciter'.
You can get comparable results with a decent EQ app (I use PlayerPro) although EQ in this form is static and not dynamic, but Beats Audio 'just works' for almost all apps.
It's also branded and hyped to high heaven - to make it seem like some amazing feature.
Lets us not forgets, we've had HTC trying this with SRS and Dolby too...
One final thing to remember - making something sound 'better' doesn't mean it's making it more accurate! usually it's the opposite. Most users will be playing 128K mp3 files so it's hardly surprising they feel the sound lacks a little depth.

If you can't have it with nonsense rom, you don't need to bash the product..as far as I'm concern, Beats Audio is very good..
When watching videos through the browser...there is hardly any bass(using the speaker). Is there a way to add base? Like if a guy is talking on the video his voice sounds tiny rather than full.
This tab has very very poor default sound settings, If you are not using viperfx or a modified kernel which has some eq settings it sound very poor in terms of bass
Not a lot you can with such tiny speakers, the speakers stereo on my HTC M7 phone are amazing so it can be done.
You can try Viper as mentioned above as long as you are not on android 5+ , A few Tab S owners say it works great.

Yeah, I know it can be done, but it`s supposed to be a bit more difficult to do than with pre 5.0 , if you have a guide, can you post it for other owners, unless it`s wildly known.
