Fastboot shows ?????????? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently flashed the newest CM Nightly. When I booted the phone up, I was having too many bugs for my taste, so I decided to flash back to my previous rom Pure Nexus. When I did that, everything went well according to the recovery. However, when I booted the phone, it was stuck in the boot animation. So then I decided I'd flash back to stock and start all over from the beginning. Brought up the bootloader and prepared the whole fastboot thing only to get this message:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>fastboot devices
???????????? fastboot
I reflashed CM to see if I could get my phone to work at least and it would boot up, allowing me to use basic phone functions, but apparently my mobile data isn't working.
Now I can't do anything in fastboot. What did I do and can I fix it? Thank you all for the help in advance.
Edit - I was able to get it to register in fastboot somehow, so I tried flashing the latest stock firmware. It appeared to work perfectly. Now when I boot up the phone, I get past the boot animation and an error pops up saying "system UI has stopped" and won't go away. Now when I attempt to get fastboot working again, I get the ?????????. WTF did I do? Is my phone FUBAR?

Firstly reinstall fastboot.
Secondly flash fully stock again, latest version.
If you flash everything again everything should be OK.

Thank you for the reply. I did what you said and again everything appeared to flash correctly. However, once I got past the boot animation again, the "System UI has stopped" message popped up and I can't do anything with the phone.
Should I lock the bootloader to make it completely stock again? Keep flashing until it works?

Okay so I decrypted my data partition and now it works perfectly. Weird. Thanks for your help anyway.

Help urgent!!!!!!! Gn stuck on google symbol

So I was trying to put JB on my GN using this:
pcworld.idg.com.au/article/429778/how_update_your_galaxy_nexus_jelly_bean/[/url]
I reached to apoint where i had 4.04 yakju, but when I put the file to get JB, It said error and aborted, i went to wipe data and reboot, wipe data worked fine, reboot led me to the google home screen and is stuck there.
I can access fastboot. Recovery mode takes me to that android with the danger sign, doing another reset doesnt work, clicking reboot doesnt work.
I'm pretty nooby at this. I read a few other forums and they said something about flashing a new rom or something but I don't understand.
Please help! The phone isn't mine! Need help ASAP before owner finds out I messed up their phone, thanks!
If you can access fastboot and your bootloader is unlocked just flash a stock system image.
These are the reasons people shouldn't just one click everything they do. If you understood how fastboot worked you would be golden.
Reflash recovery. Then mount USB storage and then get a ROM on there and flash it.

The site I went to dumbed down everything, and all i had to do was input numbers into some program. I double checked what a fastboot was. I definitely don't know how to work that. I mixed up the fastboot with the bootloader...
how do i reflash recovery and get a rom on there? I know this is asking alot....sorry
My bootloader is unlocked but im not rooted. I will (figure out how to) root if needed.
Open up a terminal on your computer use fastboot to flash the recovery image.
Since you didn't take the time learn what you were doing to begin with, I would take the time now to go read. The answers are easily found with google, or searching this site.
Roughly, install adb and fastboot on your computer, load drivers for your phone, download the proper recovery and put it in the fastboot directory on your pc, plug in the phone boot to the bootloader
open term
./fastboot oem unlock
./fastboot flash recovery <nameofrecoveryimage>
I reached the fastboot part, but when i type in "fastboot flash recovery (file name) it says it cannot load file name...
What is the proper file that I should use? Running 4.04 YAKJU looking to just recover the phone back or switch to jelly bean, whichever is easier. (jelly bean if they are both the same)
okay okay okay, i think im almost there...got a rom and extraced it, i know how 4 files:
Boot 4,148KB
Recovery 4,478 KB
System 316,112 KB
Userdata 137,555 KB
Which one do I put for fastboot oem recovery (fileimagename)
Thanks
Stuck on Google screen
Background: GN is unclocked and rooted. I've had quite a few devices and have rooted them all and run custom ROMs. I am fairly familiar with all of the tools needed, but by no means an expert. I have the Android SDK with adb and fastboot installed on my Win 7 x64 machine as well as the samsung drivers. I loaded a Jelly Bean ROM the day after it was announced at Google I/O and ran it for awhile before I started having touchscreen issues. I removed the battery and restarted the phone and had no problems for about a week or so.
Problem: I started having touchscreen problems again, but figured it was perhaps due to the early version of JB that was ported over from the GSM version (I believe). I tried a few other versions that were released later and they would work for a few days and then the touchscreen issue would pop up again. At this point I started thinking it might be a hardware problem because if I twisted the phone (weird, but it worked) the touchscreen would respond. I flashed another version of the Jelly Belly ROM yesterday (//rootzwiki.com/topic/28677-rom-jelly-belly-v33-07122012-jellybean-411-pure-aosp-its-all-about-speed/") to see if it would work by chance. Unfortunately, I still encountered the touchscreen problem. After rebooting a few times my GN started bootlooping and would not load into Android.
Actions: At this point I tried to recover from a backup, but much to my dismay it failed (don't remember exact error). I tried a few other backups with no luck. I tried reflashing another ROM, no luck. Then I started seeing some errors when booting into recovery (E: can't mount cache/recovery/log. Around this time I also noticed I was getting errors with sdcard. I decided to take the phone back to stock using the verizon ICL53F factory image. I tried via numerous toolkits (Odin, Galaxy Nexus Toolkit and directly from fastboot) and have been unsuccessful. I've searched every forum and have literally tried everything I with no luck. I can flash new recoveries, but it doesn't solve my problem. Right now phone is back to stock with stock recovery and just bootloops at the Google screen.
I assume my phone is completely hosed, but am hoping someone might know something I don't and might be able to help me restore this phone.
Edit: I tried flashing an imm76k factory image via fastboot and was finally able to get in. I must have had a bad icl53f factory image...close call.

Can only access bootloader, bootlooped, RUU didn't work.

A week or so after upgrading from Pacman v15 to v15.3 I began having my phone drop into roaming for a really long time. I restarted my phone to see if it would fix the issue, and I got a bootloop, nothing past the white HTC screen I had issues flashing to fastboot, so I got a new unlocktoken and now I can flash. At least... it will send, write, and "okay" me on it, but then nothing will work. I will "successfully" flash a recovery (i've tried twrp and cwm) and then when I try and get into them through bootloader it just sends me on the same old bootloop.
Please help... I guess I should flash an RUU but I've never done that before, and I'm curious as to whether or not this will even work since nothing else is "taking."
UPDATE... DL'ed the RUU and followed directions of...
flashing recovery_signed.img
fastboot oem lock
then running RUU in fastboot usb.
Everything SEEMED to take fine, and then when I go to reboot I get a loop again. grr...

[Q] Unable to fix bootloop - even tried STOCK flash in fastboot. No luck.

Hey guys,
Long time lurker, ROM user since the Galaxy S days.
Weird, intractable bootloop problem here. Gets to boot animation sometimes gets to the "upgrading android" screen, then bootloops in a few seconds after upgrading a few apps. Usually bootloops during the boot animation (doesn't matter what ROM or Stock ROM I try). Ocassionally gets to my "SIM PIN" screen, then reboots before I have a chance to enter anything.
Normal State have Cyanogenmod and Franco Kernel running buttery smooth. (CM10.1M3 Snapshot + Franco 376 when problem started)
Problem Started When I tried to update CM to the new RC1 from the Cyanogenmod upgrade button in "settings". I had SuperSU installed overtop the built-in superuser. Everything was working fine.
What I have tried:
Have latest CWM: Have flashed, reflashed, wiped and re-wiped everything imaginable through CWM. All Caches, system sdcard, you name it, if it's an option in CWM I have tried formatting or wiping it and reflashing a ROM.
ROMs I have tried - CM10.1M3 Snapshot, CM10.1RC1 CM10.1RC2, ParanoidAndroid 3.5+ (Latest), Bigxie Maguro Latest.
Finally I got fed up and decided to go back to STOCK, unrooted, unlocked using fastboot.
I did:
> fastboot erase boot
> fastboot erase cache
> fastboot erase recovery
> fastboot erase system
> fastboot erase userdata
> fastboot flash bootloader magurobootloader.img
> fastboot reboot-bootloader
> fastboot flash radio radioxxlj1.img
> fastboot reboot-bootloader
> fastboot -w update image-maguro-jdq39.zip
And after booting back into the STOCK google recovery (man I haven't seen that screen in AGES) and resetting factory clearing cache. Low and behold -
STILL BOOT LOOPS!!!! What the hell!?!
I'm at my wits end. Any suggestions would be great. What am I forgetting here?! I am absolutely desperate.
What is in the update image and where did you get it? I'd flash everything manually, skip the update command.

Ok good idea, I'll try. The update image was the stock image from google (can't post link - low post count) I just didn't remember the filenames when I was making the original post - but they are the official STOCK images - for the radio, the bootloader and the ROM.

Okay I tried flashing boot, system, userdata, and recovery manually with fastboot flash and after that I STILL get the rebootloop from google logo to boot animation to google logo. So weird.
Any other ideas?

So decided to try TWRP just to see...well I dunno.
Interstingly enough when I got to hit "reboot" in TWRP it says "OS not installed!!" which is weird because I basically flashed the stock everything 4.2.2 (bootloader recovery, system, boot, everything) from fastboot. Then JUST flashed the TWRP recovery.
I really don't know what to make of this. I just tried keeping the battery out for like 2 minutes, then going back into fastboot and manually flashing:
bootloader
boot
radio
recovery
system
userdata
relocked bootloader
of the STOCK google maguro 4.2.2 (MD5 sum is good. It checked out)
And I still get a continuous reboot loop that doesn't even get past the "X" animation screen. Very ocassionally (1/10) it does get past that screen and I get to the screen where you choose your language, but right when I choose my language, the phone reboots and then continues the loop.
Honestly...Unless someone has another idea, I think I'm going to get another phone tomorrow and pray I'm under warranty. I hate to do it, because I've never had to do that before through all my flashing/ROM adventures...but I don't know what else to do. I've been using sideload for everything (except of course the fastboot flashing back to stock), but I doubt that has anything to do with it...I dunno crap.
anyone have any words of advice?
One thing I thought i might work was redoing the partition table in Odin. So I tried this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2065470 (Thanks to Samersh72)
ODIN worked perfectly, download mode worked well, installed fine, and...
still bootloops!
Sometimes gets to "updating android" does a few apps, then bootloops. Once got to the screen where I select language, and before I could select anything - bootloop!
Do you guys think this is hardware? Right now I've installed stock 4.2.2 through ODIN and locked the bootloader in anticipation of returning the phone...

I looked into the OMAP flash method - that's some hardcore stuff. It looks like it's more for phones that can't access recovery, or hard seemingly bootbricked. I can actually do all of those things with my phone - I can write a new recovery no problem, I have fastboot access (Works well), I can even seemingly install ROMs - for instance the cyanogenmod boot animation plays fine - but everything boot loops.
I'm a bit worried to try OMAP Flash because it seems from the thread that some people are having their IMEI numbers erased or set to generic and I don't want that to happen since I'm actually still under warranty right now...
Do you think it's worth it to try?

Yeah you're right. OK done.
While I agree that the safest route is to return the device to warranty, omapflash is a tool which communicates with omap chip before even fastboot/bootloader is installed.
Have you tried viewing logcat/dmesg while device is booting to see why and/or its bootlooping?

I can't seem to get at logcat from this state. even if I try adb -d logcat or something similar it doesn't work. It doesn't pick up the log from the boot. Is it because USB debugging is disabled by default on the stock OS?

Yes, but There's a build.prop property that enables ADB debugging.. Since you have access to a custom recovery, you can mount /system rw and make your changes there.

Similar issue
Hey guys,
I am having a similar issue with my Nexus. It is running Phandroid 3 and one day just locked up, rebooted, and shortly after reboot (15-30 sec. after the OS loads) it freezes. I can still boot into CWM recovery and into fastboot mode, and have tried to flash it with the stock rom and bootloader. I also tried an OMAP flash, but that did not change anything as well. The odd thing is that when I try to flash a new rom (I have tried stock and other custom roms) it flashes as if everything is fine, but when I reboot it still has the phandroid rom on it. Another odd note is that when phandroid boots it notifies me that I have an incoming text message, but I removed the SIM card over a month ago. I have been struggling with this and would love any thoughts or opinions anyone has to offer. Thanks a lot!

Stuck on team win recovery project please help

I have no idea how to root or anything like that, I bought this oneplus 3 and had a update a week later.. so when I did the software update it took me into teamwin recovery mode and now I don't know how to get back into my phone please help....
Did you buy the phone second hand or did you try to flash TWRP yourself? It shouldn't have TWRP installed by default.
Regardless, you can use TWRP to flash the latest update.
Given that you have TWRP, I'm assuming that you have an unlocked bootloader. Did you notice a warning pop up everytime you reboot your phone before? It should say something along the lines of "your device has been unlocked and can't be trusted". If not, you'll have to unlock it (it wipes your phone in the process).
If the bootloader is unlocked, you can simply download and flash the latest zip for OOS 4.0.3 in TWRP. This will update you phone and replace TWRP with the stock recovery (so you don't run into this problem again in the future when installing an OTA). If you don't intend to modify your phone in any way, then this is all you need to do, your phone should be functional.
There are plenty of threads with detailed guides on how to do all of this.
I'm also stuck on TWRP after stupidly downloading the latest OTA and I don't know what to do!
Phone won't boot normal, just goes off.
Situation:
- Bootloader, Fastboot and TWRP wil load.
- Device seen by windows
- Zip install in TWRP gets stuck at 'patching zip unconditiontally'
- Another zip flashes, but gets stuck at the end, no reboot option (manually but that's not the way)
Can someone please point me in the right direction? I don't care if I lose data, just want my phone back!

Simple, check the OnePlus D/L sites for this one http://oxygenos.oneplus.net.s3.amazonaws.com/recovery_op3.img and flash it by TWRP or fastboot to RECOVERY. Boot once with the official Recovery and all ist fine again.
This is issue of using a faulty twrp so for that when ur phone us booting up go to fastboot and flash twrp 3.0.4-1 and everything will work

Similar Problem here:
just wanted to flash latest OOS 4.0.3, so I flashed back stock recovery with flashify and rebooted into recovery mode to flash the already downloaded OOS 4.0.3. zip. That's when it began to go poop! After rebooting it just went dark with no Chance to power it on again! No dice with power button, Volume up/down + power button, nothing! Not even the LED's are blinking when plugged in. So this one seems to be basically dead!
I got it once booting again after randomly pushing the buttons (after x minutes!?), but everytime I reboot the phone it just shuts off without beeing able to power it on again. At the Moment it's dead!
Any ideas what might happened? If I get it on again, should I immediately reset it to factory Settings?
I am kinda lost here! Any help/ideas would be much appreciated!
Flashify? Never used it and never trusted apps which flash stuff on a running system. Use fastboot and reflash the recovery partition. Link to recovery is in my former post.
fastboot flash recovery PATHTOIMGFILE
Thank you for your advice! Still a lot to learn! Got it up again, will try as you suggested!
It appeared that my stock recovery file was corrupted , but all is fine again! Thank you very much!

I may have been the person you traded with to get the OnePlus 3, but I took the phone back and after 5 hours I got it up and running.
The phone would boot to TWRP, but even after wiping the entire system and dragging a ROM zip to the internal storage, reinstalling did nothing. It just kept booting back to recovery.
The solution entailed the following.
Download stock recovery IMG. Flashed through TWRP. Rebooted recovery and now was back to stock recovery.
Download the official OxygenOS ROM zip from the OnePlus website and changed the name to update.zip
Next I downloaded Android studio for access to ADB. I had never used ADB before, but I knew this was needed to push a file to the phone.
Needless to say, ADB kept freezing my computer when I would type in the commands to side load.
I deleted Android studio and installed a minimal ADB/Fastboot I found online. I opened my command prompt, typed the command for sideloading, and immediately got my installation starting. It took about 10 minutes to fully install. When it was finished, I rebooted and had a fully functioning OnePlus 3

various issues with google variant

I've had Google phones for years now, including previous Pixel, but I just got an XL 2 yesterday and I'm regretting it.
It's Google unlocked and running June's latest image. I've experienced various app crashing on stock, and random reboots.
Then there's the rooting and flashing. I unlocked the bootloader and installed the most recent, twrp (the one verified to work on xda for roms) but can't flash anything.
My twrp either hangs on the twrp start screen, or when it does load, the touch screen doesn't work. When I can get it going, every rom I flash gives me an error on the second step. I'm flashing on slot B by the way, that's what boots up when I boot to twrp.
Lastly, I am unlocked both for flashing and flashing_critical thru adb, so I'm at a loss and seriously confused.
When I FIRST unlocked everything, I was able to flash Nitrogen rom but I got stuck at the rom splash screen.
Tldr:
-What is the Correct install method/sequence for roms?
-do the slots matter?
-is random reboots and app crashing on stock a sign of a hardware issue?
I haven't installed a custom ROM on my P2XL, so I'm running rooted stock. Anyway, for rooted stock, this is what I did.
Entered bootloader mode.
Booted into recovery using the command "fastboot boot recovery.img", where "recovery.img" is the TWRP recovery iteslf. In my case, I renamed it "taimen.img".
Flashed the TWRP installer zip needed for the P2XL (Required if intending to replace the stock recovery).
Rebooted into recovery.
Flashed a custom kernel (Recommended - resolves touch issues in TWRP).
Flashed Magisk.
6. Rebooted.
If installing a custom ROM, flash it prior to the custom kernel. Slots only matter if running stock. Random reboots and app crashes are not signs of a hardware issue.

Ya know my friend, after our conversation yesterday, and your questions in the nitrogen thread, and now random reboots and app crashes, I think it's time to consider a factory reset. You shouldn't be having those problems on a stock setup. If that's not successful, then I would definitely consider an RMA. Just my 2 cents worth :good:
I agree. I got it used tho which is an issue.

If it doesn't after 5 minutes, do a hard restart with the power button. If that doesn't work, then reboot to twrp and flash the rom and twrp installer zip again.
Ok cool thanks. I relocked bootloader last night and went back to stock. Unlocked it all this morning from my work computer and different unlock app. So here's hoping.

What did you do to get it to work? You could just flash the June vendor.img to both slots. If you keep getting a vendor mismatch, probably nothing to worry about according to the Dev of nitrogen.
Different machine, cable and unlocking tool.
But I went to bone stock with locked bootloader, then flashed the newest twrp with the newest all in one tool. Was on slot A so wiped everything and flashed rom plus twrp again. I rebooted system to slot B, but then it just hung at the rom splash screen.
So I did it all over on slot A, ignored the "no os installed" message and booted anyway. Then it fired up. Rebooting into twrp from there took me to B, which is where I need to be for an image file or root.
So yea, thanks for the help.
I'm having this issue also. I tried flashing nitrogen, it hung. I tried to go back with factory reset Img and nothing happens in adb. Flashed the may img and it wouldn't boot all the way up. Now I'm stuck in bootloader trying to figure this all out. Seems like nothing in doing is working. I can get recovery to boot, but no files inside so idk. Tried to sideloadb nitrogen, but it said adb out of date for device when sdk is fully updated.

You didn't mention the out of date message in your other post, but uninstall SDK and then download the stand-alone adb/fastboot binaries from May of this year. Dump that in a folder (eg. c:\adb) and put that folder in your path statement. Manually flash the full factory image without modifying flash-all.bat. Post your screeen if you have any errors. :good:
