I've been happy with SquareTrade. Thankfully, I've never had to file a claim, but my other interactions with them have been good.
They do not cover loss or theft, however.

Yes I heard good things about square trade, as well. I've only lost a device once and I'm glad I had insurance. So it's a nice benefit to have just in case.

Question bout ESN

ok guys i have a survivor EVO who survived for 12 minutes drowned in water, but my wifi, bluetooth and front cammera are not working, now i claimed as lost in the insurance and they are sending me a replacement for my phone, now my question is can i use the old drowned evo in METROPCS or that esn will be invalid?
It can be ported to evo just never used on sprint again. it can also go to cricket

Yes, you can just flash it to metroPCS, there are tons of instructions out there. HOWEVER, I noticed you're in NYC. Just keep in mind the Metro PCS network in NYC and New england is quite new and uses the 1700mHz AWS band, which the evo does not support.

No service in any way, shape or form.
In my experience insurance doesn't report the esn to sprint if you only talk to the insurance folks directly. The only way to get it deactivated or marked as lost or stolen is to actually tell sprint. Whether it's asking them for the phone number of asurion and telling them the phone was lost or telling them in the store.

Also please do not forget that Insurance Fraud is bad. It causes higher deductibles for those that make claims, even those that are not making fraudulent claims.
If you have the device, water damaged or not, you are supposed to send it to Asurion. Asurion is not my friend, however I am a customer of theirs. I think that you should send the phone to them.
I do wonder why it was 12 minutes in the water and not 11 or 13. 11 minutes in the water sounds much more believable for an insurance claim than 12.
I do not like people to commit insurance fraud, however my employment is based on the basis of deterring insurance.

While I think he came off as kind of douche-y when he questioned the minutes the phone was dunked in water, I think he's quite right about everything else. It IS insurance fraud, and it WILL raise our deductible. Just a year ago it would cost $50 to replace a phone with asurion, now it costs double that.

How is not sending my dead phone to asurian going to raise insurance rates? ? Don't be stupid, will it hurt state farm when my body shop doesn't send back my totaled bumper after it paid my claim? ! They upped the deductable because phones cost more...

I meant to hit the quote button but I hit the thanks button by mistake. Anyway, your example is pretty stupid. The point is he reported his phone lost or stolen when in fact it wasn't. I am sure that he new that if he reported it as damaged then he would have to return the damaged phone thats why he reported it as lost or stolen. If you report your car stolen but in reality you have it hidden somewhere in a friends garage then file an insurance claim isn't that fraud? If you drive your car into a brick wall and the insurance company totals your car out do you get to keep the totalled car to repair then sell it to someone else? Of course not, it becomes the property of the insurance company.

I never said anything about being perfect, I also am not judging anyone or what they do. I could care less what anyone decides to do, that's their business but still, it is what it is and that's a fact. Also, what do you mean by as much as we pay for these phones? Do you remember what cell phones cost 5, 10 or 15 years ago and you gonna mention about the price of phones now? The price of these phones now are way more than reasonable for what we get even though its gonna be outdated in six months, thats just the nature of the industry. If you buy a new car today, in 6 months it aint gonna be worth **** either compared to what you paid for it so whats your point? If something happens to your car are you gonna commit fraud to get as much as you can out of the insurance company because you paid an arm and a leg for your car? Hell, what if your boss tells you one day that "as much as we pay you, you can blow me", is that ok? Like I said it is what it is and you cant dispute that. What ever you decide to do is your business and what ever the OP decides to do is his business, I was just pointing out the obvious facts without casting judgement.

So.... your belief is that since you believe HTC is charging way too much for the phones, that makes it OK to steal from Asurion?
Do you not grasp the fact the Asurion has to pay for the phones they send out to people who commit fraud?

Asurion does not pay for our phones every body here that pays 7$
A month for 24 months. Is 168$ plus 100 dollar deductible they are effectively getting us to pay 268 dollars for us to get a refurbished replacement phone.... now granted my math is based on us having a 2 yr contract and that you only make a claim once a yr... sounds like they're winning to me.....
Just my theory on this as much as **** cost in this world of ours every now and then you've got to stick it to the man
Edit. Have you ever actually seen the invoice price of the Evo ..... buying a phone is worse than buying a car

so lemme ask u something here, so if i report my phone damaged, i gotta returned and pay 100 dollars, but i reported lost, i still paid 100 dollars but guess what?? i have a spare battery and some parts in case i need it, so i guess is a pretty good deal... come on, if it was free to send the phone back and get a new one, i wouldve done it...
Insurance fraud is illegal on any level. $5 or $5 million dollars. By keeping the phone you are contributing to possible future increases of insurance rates or deductibles.
What I think is funny is that you openly admit to breaking the law on a public forum. Then, you continue to justify yourself. The law is the law.
Assurion is a business and their drive is to profit. If you do not want to support them then you have other options such as Best Buy Insurance or no insurance.
By returning the phone you are giving Assurion a possible chance to refurbish that phone and the ability to keep insurance rates and deductibles down.

so what are u some insurance fraud cop?? if yes ill give u my address so u can come... stop bullshitting me, how can they prove i didnt lose my phone? so who cares, now, lemme tell u something, yes they here to make profit, but isnt it the money we pay every month their profit? come on.. send it back so they can reburbish it and then get money out of the phone i paid for? they getting more money out of me that the money i paid for the phone on sprint (WITH A 2 YEARS CONTRACT).. so NOPE they`re NOT getting my phone back, PERIOD! so u telling me that if if u buy a car and is messed up u gonna give away the money that u paid for it, and give it as a gift to the insurance company so they can fix it and sell it again (of course u getting nothing out of the sale) and still pay for the new car? (which problably wont be new either) i dont think so,. so please... think what would u do b4 trying to b perfect here

Of course they report it to Sprint, if they didn't they would be taking losses left and right.

Question about insurance options. Need help finding what is right for our family.

Hello! Long time Android owner and XDA member but new to ATT.
Coming over from 12 years of Sprint. The past few years have been ROUGH. They blew up with new devices and then didn't have the network to back it. The data, simply didn't work.
Can't believe how much faster ATT is even on HSPA+.
OK so we bought four S3's at the Best Buy durning there Black Friday craptasic sale. The guy working at BB scammed the Black Tie Best Buy insurance policy on us. I say that because he did NOT inform us that is does not cover lost, stolen or water damaged phones.
WE NEED THIS. Two of these phones are going to teenagers and I can't find my keys 90% of the time so hell, I'm forgetful about leaving stuff places too.
My wife wants to keep the Best Buy insurance I think because she tends to break screens more then anything and not paying $200.00 dollars is appealing to her. I've never broken a screen other then one time I whipped my HTC EVO into a wall because it sucked but I've lost phones. Then my son took a damn shower with his Verizon phone one time because he was texting his gf, seriously.... My daughter lost hers in a lake... Yes IN A LAKE.
Point being we need something that covers everything but that BB insurance is appealing but we don't want to pay $10.00 to each company per line.
What would be the suggested options here? I wish there was a combination of the two.

Invest in Otterbox Defender cases for the teenagers. They come in a variety of colors. This will protect against most damages.

This scenario happened to me with my S2. I suggest getting an otterbox or visiting SpigenSGP (amazing company, best screen protectors and cases i've used.) and buying a case. As for insurance, try and take a look at SquareTrade coverage. They cover everything like drops and water damage and lost phones. They charge you a one time cost for the number of years the coverage is for, and if it breaks there is a deductible according to the damage. Honestly give them a try, they are a fantastic company. Personally I have the AT&T mobile insurance, but my stepfather uses SquareTrade and has had nothing but positive experience. Just make sure to get that BB crap off and get your money back!!!

The kids don't break their phones, they loose them.
Honestly, SquareTrade doesn't look as good as what Best Buy offers. There is NO deductible with the Best Buy insurance. SqareTrade is $99.00
Looks like SquareTrade does not cover LOSS or THEFT either which is what we do not like about the Best Buy insurance. Everything about the BB insurance is great with the acceptation of NO LOSS or THEFT or WATER damage.
BB told me their insurance does cover water damage

I searched for insurance and found this thread. I am trying to compare Squaretrade vs Worth Ave Group. Worth offers replacement for lost/stolen. Sams Club offers Squaretrade with only $49 deductibles.
So compare those two would be my advise but Im looking on this site for the same comparisons.
I looked at all the insurance providers and ended up purchasing it from Ensquared. It's $99 for 2 years with a $75 deductible. They cover loss, theft, and water damage. By far the best value that I could find and they seem to get good reviews.

BB does cover water damage. It doesn't cover full submersion, but do what everyone does and say you spilled water on it. With all the options for GPS location of a lost phone you can probably get away with Avast, Lookout, Cerberus... the list goes on and still not have to pay a deductible if it gets broken. When I worked at best buy we covered everything but lost, stolen, and negligence. If someone said I dropped it in a lake I'd pretend I didn't hear them and say, it looks like you "spilled" something on it. They'd finally get the hint after around 4 or 5 times haha.

You can install various applications that will allow you to not only track your phone, but even in the case someone wipes the phone, you can still track it (Avast mobile security) works like lo-jack for your phone.

Hi,
I went through similiar stuff with our phone insurance.
Studying on the net I came across a great idea!!!
Call your homeowners and/or car insurance.
I put my phone on a rider to auto for $50 a year, no deductible!!!
They needed purchase price for phone, hard copy, that's all.
Sounds too good to be true, the saleswoman who researched and
issued the policy told me she changed hers also. She didn't know
her own insurance company offered this rider!!

Be careful putting it on a car policy. I have heard of people adding it to homeowners and renters, but auto rates change all the time. If you breathe incorrectly your auto policy is likely to go up. I could only imagine filing a claim on a phone that was unrelated to the car. Homeowners and renters rates don't change this way, which is why people use them.

If u ever download a rom it says in the developers disclaimer usually
Your warranty is now void.
But u can always just turn it in and say the malfunctions of the phone are (make up some excuse, even though u bricked it) Now There is a counter inside the phone
It'll show you when you boot into download mode.
Flashing things through Odin trip the counter
Well u will either be charged the deductible or u wont be??
So would u lie for a new phone??
some people believe in lying for this and some people dont mind....
Thanks a lot man but I wasn't asking about the warranty as I am not paying for that.. I was asking about the insurance coverage...coz I will be paying around $10 each month for it.. so just wanted to be sure that if the phone gets bricked, the screen shatters or whatever goes wrong...will they be able to cover it even if its rooted...

It's $11.99 per month. The Tmobile guy told me I can only buy it right there at the store only when I bought the device. Once I leave, I won't be able to buy it, not sure he is BS or not. He said I can always cancel it later once I leave but cannot add it back on. Thus, I added it since I plan to odin/root and all that stuff.
The caveat: Tmobile guy said you have to pay $5 deductible for defective phone (looks normal but not behaving normally) or $175 deductible for any other reasons for the life of that phone such as physical damage, lost, water, stolen (including brick - if I bricked it, I'll just tell them I lost it)

Thanks for letting me know about this. It seems like a great value $99 for 2 year but does not cover loss or theft. I'll use it on my other phone. There is a $99 deductible. It does cover water damage...so if I brick this I guess I'll just pour water over it and pay $99 to get a new one. Is there anyway to claim for loss or theft on SquareTrade?
$99 (24 months excluding loss and theft)
http://www.squaretrade.com/samsung-galaxy-warranty
vs
Tmobile $11.99/mo ($288 of 24 months)

Why do people always confuse insurance with warranty? Insurance covers everything. You could brick your phone, shatter the screen, or drop it in the toilet and you just pay the deductible and get a new one. Or if your phone gets lost or stolen it is also covered

So what's the point of paying for squaretrade?? We already have Samsungs warranty for free? This isn't INSURANCE this is WARRANTY. Im paying $8 a month with tmobile for INSURANCE so if my phone breaks I can just pay a deductible and get a new one. And if my phone starts having some kind of issues I'll use Samsungs WARRANTY and get an exchange for $5.

Good point. I saw the $8 earlier but it was greyed out so I thought it is no longer available to this phone...however if I click the insurance tab, it is no longer greyed out...so it is available to tmo s4 still. This $8 is good. Even though it does not cover malfunction, I think that can easily be resolved... If I bricked it, I'll just say it is stolen...bam...I can still get a replacement. The Tmo guy at the store tried to sell me the $12, I guess I'll just have to call them tomorrow to switch to this $7.79 one.
So now, it's
$6 (no loss of theft)
$99 deductible
vs
$8 (not the $12) tmobile insurance still cover loss and theft except malfunction (but does cover loss or theft, lol)
$175 deductible

If it's malfunction you can get a warranty exchange. And if you brick it you should still be able to to the claim. Insurance is for you so if you **** up your phone (brick, water damage, broken screen) you can pay a deductible and get a new phone. And i wouldn't report it stolen, I jeard if you report stolen you have to have a police report ( don't quote me on that). I lost my S3 once on a drunken night and just filed a claim the next day as lost. Got a new one the next day.

Hrm...interesting. Ok, note to self don't use Stolen excuse. Use LOST as universal excuse (including hard brick) I like the lost or stolen option since I may lose it at crowded places/parties and about to travel international country (might get pick pocket)
squaretrade covers everything Accidental Damage from Handling coverage even that!, if u read the agreement when u sign up u get that.
Samsung Galaxy S 4 Black 4/29/2013 2 years with ADH, thats costing me less then 6.00. Im not sure about the theft or loss

[Q] SquareTrade Discount?

Before someone says 'search', you should know that the search function isn't working on XDA right now.
I was browsing SquareTrade's website and came across the fact that they have a specific page for Samsung Galaxy devices. It seems that those warranties are cheaper than the regular smartphone warranties. http://www.squaretrade.com/samsung-galaxy-warranty
It's only $99 down and $99 deductible. That seems like a good deal, since it covers accidental as well as water and mechanical.
Has anyone used SquareTrade before? Was it worth it, and what was the process for getting a replacement like?

that is the same deal you get if you go through amazon for squaretrade. I was going to get it, but it does not cover lost/stolen which is what I am worried about more than dropping and breaking it
When I found out that Jump through t-mobile came with insurance I just jumped on that. - no pun intended. A lot of people use squaretrade - including costco and a friend of mine has no problems. Search them on Amazon and read their reviews...they have good reviews.
Is 99 for a two year insurance plan?
does anyone know if squaretrade covers phones that have been rooted/software modified? like, does the phone have to still have it's original manufacturer's warranty intact or does that not matter here? will they force you to try to use the samsung warranty first, or does their warranty just work in lieu of the samsung one?

Yes, that's for two years, which seems to be a really good deal for me. When I want to sell my phone next year (when the next Note comes out), a warranty will be a big selling point.

I think that is something that manufacturers do more than 3rd party warranty providers. I don't think SquareTrade cares if you root your phone. It might come into play if something happens like you brick your phone and ask for a replacement, but i'm not sure. I'll have to google it and see if anyone has said anything about that possibly being a problem.

The only problem I have found with Squaretrade is that you can only replace your phone once during the 2 year plan. I've read it on multiple reviews.

Honestly, I've never broken/lost/damaged my phone in any way that it would need to be replaced. So I hope that one time would be all I would need. And even one time would save my $500+ to repurchase the phone.
I'm glad they give you 30 days from the date of purchase to get the warranty, cause I am all tapped out right now just from buying the phone itself.

It's 79 for two years and 50 down for a replacement. I'm not sure how good of reviews it has gotten and I'm hesitant but it's an option.

for as many sales as Negri gets...i doubt there would be a big issue with their extended warranty
I'm also hoping for a coupon before the 30 days are passed. You can also request a prorated refund if you don't have the phone anymore within the 2 years.
I bought Samsung galaxy note 3 T-mobile from Swappa, I will unlock it and use it with AT&T.
In this case, will square trade covers above device. What all details I need from seller to get Square Trade protection plan on this device?

Yeah, I had originally looked at them. They just changed their insurance provider and the terms. Before, it was a higher price and deductible, but you got a new phone when you made a claim. Now, with the lower price and deductible, you have to send the phone off to be repaired. I'm just not sure about the new insurer. SquareTrade has been around for a while and I know that they are decent, so I may go with them.

I'm pretty sure that SquareTrade requires a receipt or invoice of some kind as proof of a newly purchased phone in order to get a warranty. The warranty itself is transferable if you later sell the phone, but to get a new one I think you need the proof of purchase.

Insuring for Galaxy Note 4

I am coming from best buy Geek Squad with no deductible. I know best buy is still much better than sprint but I am looking for insurance that offers me the best protection including accidental drops and water damage and coverage for lost and stolen phones (although I'm willing to give this up if I have to in return for a great accidental plan with low ddeductible) I'm curious what everyone else is planning to go with to protect their new phone. With bestbuy I had my phone ran over by a semi and dropped from high elevation (both theories technically not covered) but was replaced twice at no charge.
Anyone find this kind of great insurance else where?
Maybe I'll just do geek squad and drop sprints insurance

I haven't looked at specifics between plans to compare, something I need to do but I recently read an article on one of the many android-centric sites about best buy's updated insurance plan and it is not so good, a few months back it was modified greatly and at quick glance it was worse than what is provided through sprint. These aren't exact numbers but it was something like 40 dollars per claim even if work (as in fix/replace) is done or not and deductible was through the roof for high-end smartphones [audit needed]. I just remember many of the commenters on the article were saying they were jumping ship from BB insurance and going with sprint's.
No insurance for me. Never had it on a phone I've owned.

ahhh, nice, cheaper than both BB and Sprint:
http://www.samsung.com/us/owners/protection-plus/mobile-elite/?CID=AFL-hq-mul-0813-11000170
+1 Samsung
Sprint: $11 x 24 = $264 + $200 deductible, total $464
BB/GeekSquad: $149 up-front + $149 service fee, total $298
Samsung: $129 up-front + $95 service fee, total $224
Sprint includes service/repair in their monthly cost, but not replacement.
BB/GS&Samsung all charge a service fee any severity problem.

Thank you so much for this information. This is what I will be going with. Currently I have been paying $22 a month with best buy for 2 phones and never used it for one of the phones. That is $264 per device over the 24 month policy term that I paid. Samsung seems to have the best plan available for me and seems to have the lowest deductible which has been my concern. I live paycheck to paycheck and do not have $150-$200 to pay to best buy or sprint if I was to need to make a claim and $95/per claim would much easier on me. Again, Thank you for sharing that information. I don't understand why samsung has not marketed this a little better maybe in their commercials or something. Hopefully they will market it better so it will do good. I have been on the samsung site every day for the last week waiting for note 4 accessories and have never seen this.
Squaretrade is even cheaper than Samsung. It has a lower deductible and the premium is cheaper too..

I'm also coming from geek squad with no deductible on my GS4 , and I'll be going to square trade it's the best deal for $100 for 2 Years or 5$ a month and it's a 75$ deductible cheapest of all them, I'll miss the no deductible tho :/
Only the Sprint policy covers lost or stolen phones so something to keep in mind.
I'm not cheer-leading for them just adding info to the archives.
I do use Square Trade on my other electronics but will probably keep the Sprint insurance for a year.

I haven't filed a claim with them yet, but Worth Ave. Group insurance seems to be the best deal, and has great reviews: http://www.worthavegroup.com/product/cell-phone-insurance/
For a $699 phone and $50 deductible, it's $69 per year. From their site, "Each policy covers the cell phone for Accidental Damage such as drops and spills as well as Theft, Fire, Flood, Natural Disasters and Lightning Strikes. With a low $50 deductible and premiums starting as little as under $4 a month, this policy accommodates every budget. We cover NEW, USED and REFURBISHED devices."
I've been doing some more digging around about policies and this might be some useful information.
Options for people concerned with lost/stolen smartphones
-Renters/Homeowners Insurance - you'll need to add a "Valuable Personal Article" to your plan - this is also the cheapest way to go out of all of them, but only covers loss not damage (same insurers may cover damage)
-Sprint (insurance by Asurion)
If only concerned about broken/damaged smartphones (plans exclude loss)
-Squaretrade
-Samsung
Alternative ...best deal of them all but there is some risk (imo)
-Worth Ave. Group
Note: They pay out cost of plan instead of repair/replace. If you go with the $899 plan and if something happens to the phone they send you $899. The issue I found is if you look up reviews online (not on their website) there are mixed reviews, people have had problems with their claims and WAG's customer service. So there seems to be some risk here of getting the money, also the wait-time of processing the claim and actually receiving the money. [update] They don't cover loss and their definition of theft is extremely specific, read their fine print.

Samsung has insurance? Is it well priced?
I didn't even realize that bestbuy changed. I've been looking around for the negative reviews by Worth Ave and I can't find any. I've seen a few that claim to be negative but the details sound like people are trying to get coverage on things that were stated not to be covered. I'm not trying to defend them by any means. Just looking for where all these mixed reviews are posted.

Here is a good place to look BBB, yes they are 'resolved' but if you read them, many are not to the customers satisfaction.
There's also more, just google for it, you'll need to do some digging through ads/promotions and whatnot. Some of the complaints have to do with technicalities in the fine print that allow the company to deny the claim. For example if my phone is stolen I'd expect reimbursement from the claim under any circumstance, not an investigation into why it doesn't fit their definition of theft and then denied. Here's a scenario they would deny: Your at starbucks and place an order, you go find a table and put your phone on it, they call your name and you get your coffee, you come back to an empty table. Stupid absolutely, but the phone was stolen (theft), Worth would deny that claim because the phone was unprotected and "free for the taking". That's a simplistic example of the reviews/complaints/issues i've found. Basically there has to be some act of vandalism (breaking and entering/physical attack etc) along with the act of theft for it be covered and apparently this is in the fine print and not in their advertisements.

Thanks for that reply. I did read the BBB. At least some of them. A lot of the issues did deal with people leaving their cars unlocked or breaking in commercial used vehicles. I don't know about worth ave ads since I usual don't read the ads. I've yet to leave any of my phones unprotected and I'm anal about locking things up. However, as far as insurance goes the only ones I've looking at don't offer replacement for stolen devices of any kind. Samsung and squaretrade. Since I don't like a lot of time to go by on waiting for a replacement Squaretrade is out for me.
Aursion brunt me bad. I filed a BBB case against them myself. Had liquid damage with my note 2. After agreeing to pay the high deductible they sent me a broken replacement and refused to replace the replacement. Sprint kept telling me I had 10 days to get them to replace it but they wouldn't do it. I spoke to supervisors at Aursion and did all I could to get them to replace my broken replacement and they told me the only way they'd do it if is if I paid another 250 or whatever stupidly high price they are charging. I ended up having to wait around for a week for Sprint to get me a replacement device and surprising that device didn't work so I had to wait yet another week. I did finally get a working phone and I was refunded the deductible on the grounds of TEP not following their contract. I had to get a hold of sprint corporate in order to make this refund happen. Aursion didn't appear to be happy with the way things went and made sure I knew that I would never have to use them again.
Under the Samsung insurance if my device fails under normal circumstances will they still get me a fast replacement and not charge me 95 bucks to fix their problem? That for me is the kicker. If not, I'm probably going to go with Worth Ave. I'm not really counting on my phone being stolen but I do spend a lot of time on the water. Liquid damage is my worse enemy. I didn't want the S5 and no case so far offers waterproofing. For now, I'll just use a waterproof box and a bluetooth. Despite these measures I had one of those boxes fail on me taking my device with it. This week I'll be going through Worth Ave's terms and conditions and e-mailing them questions on anything I'm unsure about.
I still don't understand how Best Buy went from being on the best to what I'm calling one of the worst in terms of insurance. From the looks of things even it is covered under warranty they may still charge to fix or replace it. I understand people gaming the system but I think they went a little to aggressive on stopping that from happening.
i've never had an issue with Geek Squad and my Note 2 other than having to use one of my own phones as a backup until it was fixed (don't carry sprint phones for some reason). I had a bad string of unfortunate events within about a 3 month period and went through three Note IIs. They replaced each one without question. The last replaced phone was about four months ago. i suppose I'll be finding out what has changed since then when my phone comes in.

Why not go with liquipel? I don't mean the self applied external only stuff they sell but their service that waterproofs inside and all. They downplay its functionality somewhat on their site but check out the youtube videos of multi-hour submersion in water. And if you live near Santa Ana or Vancouver you can get it done locally in 20 minutes instead of waiting for shipping.

Probably a stupid question, but can you do 2 warranties at the same time? For example, i want to be covered for the lost/stolen part of sprint, but I also want the lower deductible from Squaretrade. Is that possible?
