Rooting Sprint Note 4 on PJ1 - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey folks. I've had my note for almost 2 years and used to be able to use hotspot with "no root" hack. But that no longer works. I'm looking now to root my note but can't seem to find instructions. I'm on the latest PJ1 OS. Can anyone post a link to the instructions? Would be much appreciated.

sorry i cant post links but all you have to do is install custom recovery with odin and then install systemless root through your recovery

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with the process you described. And so i have a few questions. The systemless root....is that basically installation of superuser? Do any of these (systemless root, custom recovery) need to be specific to this version of the software? Would you be able to recommend a thread on how to perform this through odin?
Thanks again!!!

First off some things you should do before ever flashing or rooting your phone.
1. Make sure ReActivation Lock is OFF. (Its in Settings>Security>Reactivation Lock = make sure its unchecked)
2. Turn on Developer options. (Goto Settings>About device and tap Build Number 4 to 5 times; then develepers options will be in settings menu, goto that and turn on USB Debugging)
3. You'll need Official Samsung Drivers HERE! Install this to your PC!
4. Always Backup Phone!! After you install TWRP.
IM gonna assume your on a Stock ROM. To root your gonna need to use Odin to flash TWRP, then once thats done we'll root from there.
You'll need these files :
1:
Odin3.11 from Here. It's straight from sam mobile. Is what I use and never have problems. You'll install this to your Windows PC.
2:
TWRP 3.0.2.0 tar file from Here. This file is only for the Sprint Note4 SM-N910P, So that better be the phone you have!! Download and save to PC! You can Thank bigbiff at this Thread.
3:
Lastly you need SuperSU Here! Thanks to Chainfire at this Thread! Download and save to your Phones SD card or Internal memory.
Now you have the files. Make sure you dont have samsung Kies running while installing or flashing your phone. Actually Dont have any other programs running when Flashing your phone.
1st - Install Samsung Drivers to your PC.
2nd - Install Odin to your PC.
3rd - Copy SuperSU zip file to your phone.
Now unplug your phone and turn it off. And open Odin Program as Admin. Now on your phone hold down the Vol down button + Home button + Power button at same time until a screen shows a Warning. then you'll press Volume up to continue to Download Mode.
Once in Download mode plug into usb cord to PC. Your pc should install some drivers then Odin will show your device as connected. Goto options tab in Odin and make sure all the boxes are unchecked except F. Reset Time.
Then click the log tab so we can watch the progress were gonna make. Then click the AP button and load the Twrp file you downloaded into that.
Click Start, Let it do what it does, dont touch anything until it done. Once down unplug phone and take out battery for 5 seconds.
Put battery back in and press Vol up + Home + Power until phone boots into Twrp Recovery.
Once in Recovery I sugessst to do a Full Backup.
Then you can Hit Install button in Twrp and find the Super SU file you saved on phone and Install and reboot when it says. Your ROOTED!!
Hope this isnt too confusing. It really isnt that hard. But it's easier to do than to explain.
FYI,
And Yes, systemless root is super SU in this case. All newer stock samsung roms can only be rooted with systemless root. System root won't work. There are ways to do it with custom roms and kernels though. And also there are other root apps like superuser, but this is the most common way.

Thanks aaron74 i was at work trying to explain between customers

Been away for a while so just now reading this thread. Many Thanks to you both for the links and detailed explanations. I will try this soon and advise how it turns out.
By the way, is this the same method to root a Sprint galaxy S4 on latest stock rom? Want to do this on my kid's phone also.
Oh and I assume this will trip KNOX correct?

Yes it will trip Knox.
And the s4, not sure exactly, but it will be very similar. But obviously have its own twrp file. Just goto it's forum and do a search for root. Something should pop up.

Ok thanks again for your help

Hay so its been awhile since i did any messing with my note 4. I wanted to be able to use android pay. But i read a comment about some system ui customized program and it said android pay still worked. So my question is is there a way to root the note 4 now and still be able to use android pay or did i misread the message
Sent from my SM-N910P using Xparent Purple Tapatalk 2

So was able to root thanks to the help from the kind folks in this forum. You guys are much appreciated. Now I have a question about tethering. Can I unlock the hotspot on the stock ROM?

THANKS! EASIEST ROOT EVER! I was going to downgrade to PE1 cause that's the only info I can find, thanks so much to the two who posted regarding this.
TIPS:
TWRP won't flash: I've had issues with TWRP where it won't flash in the past, this happened to me once again. It was going to an installing update screen after flashing, then some error message, then went to Samsung recovery instead of TWRP. SOLUTION: Pull battery after install, then it will stick. If needed rinse and repeat, eventually TWRP will install properly.
Hotspot: You can message some guy to get hotspot supposedly, a few messages above this one.
Knox: I couldn't disable knox first time, on second try it worked. I recall this happened last time as well on my note.

[Q] GSM Galaxy nexus Bricked -REWARD

I know i have another thread but its changed. My galaxy nexus is gsm and my brother accidentally flashed verizon stock on it. Now my nexus can only go in download mode and fastboot mode. I have tried flashing stock using odin and fastboot however it goes back to the google logo and just stays till it dies. I also cant access recovery mode because it goes to the google logo. 30 dollars reward thanks
Boot to the bootloader (Fastboot/Download) and give us the information on the bottom. Also give us the link to whatever you're trying to flash. I'll dig up the return-to-stock thread and see if I can't walk you through it. Gotta save that Nexus!
Also it'd be easier if you got on IRC. You can find a lot of us (including me) on irc.freenode.net in the channel #gn so stop on by!
Here's a link if you've never been there: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=gn&uio=d4
Wug's Toolkit???
have you tried Wug's Toolkit???
I've bricked mine for the same reason for flashing a GSM rom alpha state on a LTE Nexus.
All I had to do was hit the restore button. And it was fixed in ten minutes. I was able to save my data thanks to dropbox. Cuz I just so happened to back up my data there a lot by saving my recovery back ups
But your case is different. Use wug's toolkit and ATTEMPT to save your data by using the backup feature. MAYBE u can still recover your apps. Maybe you broke your CWMR and damaged the system.res or something. So just flash stock+Unroot. As long as you can fast boot I think you can fix it like me.
Give it a try if you have not done this yet. And let me know how it out. =p
Hope it works for u just as well as it did for me.

could you gimmie alink for that toolkit
Unbrickable
Also you can't truly brick a Nexus device. ESPECIALLY a GSM variant.
So you can fix this. I'll try to find another way just in case this way fails. but also there is a tool on the right side of the panel do the Wug's Toolkit panel. Never actually used them, but maybe it can make your phone work again without even having to flash stock+Unroot.
But again I'll try to find a another method of how this can be fixed. Hopefully someone has a tool to fix this.

Sorry. XDA won't let me post a link. =/
Since I just registered and all but don't worry I'm experienced with this stuff.
Just type Wug's toolkit v1.3 Galaxy Nexus and it should be on Android Central
. Hope this saves ur $400-$600 google device. =p
Know how u feel on this.
---------- Post added at 05:57 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:25 AM ----------
This should work because I just read the website and it says that if you flash stock+unroot it should unbrick your device. And maybe an OEM lock is required but your a GSM variant so I dunno since u came out of the factory unlocked.
If you were to fix your Nexus Device u don't have to do your $30 reward.
1. I'm 16. =p
2. Don't have a way of receiving money except by mail, which is a big hassle of nonsense.
3. Just wanted to help since I know how u feel.

I have TWRP recovery, and wiped EVERYTHING before trying to install the Rom, never had a phone that didn't really have a MicroSD, and I guess I wiped the internal memory also... meaning I have no rom to flash...
"adb devices" is not recognizing the phone so I can't Push/Sideload...
I can boot into recovery, but can't do much else without being able to use adb
HELP... any suggestions.

No. Sorry, I believe it is just Cwm that allows usb storage in recovery.(I could be wrong) As stated above, install the drivers to try to fix adb if that fails then you may need to take a look at this. Good Luck:good:

I tried that "[Guide] Unroot/Unbrick - flash official factory firmware with LG Launcher"
It seems to see the phone, and all, but when it goes to download the firmware from LG, it just hangs, reading the posts there, looks like others have it hang at the same place mine did...
I think I am just SOL, till someone figures out how to make a tool that will fix this...
I am sure I am not the only one that will accidently wipe everything leaving it in a state where you don't have a rom to flash back on it...
so I am sure someone will make something soon...
till then will just have to go back to my old phone.
Thanks.
I would assume you need to try to get fastboot working, but I have never tried to get into the G2's bootloader. But you'll get ADB - Fastboot working, you will, you just need to keep trying. Try someone else's computer if you have to.

You are looking at doing the same thing I am going to try, but when I went to where you download... the only Sprint image I see is a .zip... not a .kdz... and that program they use only recognizes .kdz's...
In reading that feed, they said that in the US they don't use .kdz's... so still looking into that, I have a post in that thread and maybe we can get more help...
But your in the EXACT spot I am in, I can get into TWRP, hard reset, and download
If you can figure it out PLEASE post here, and I will be doing the same, I am sure there will be a lot of people doing what we did without thinking, and I guess we were the first, and will be the leaders... LOL

well ****. I'm going to try the method listed in that thread but I don't know if it's going to work. Nothing seems to identify my phone properly. The LG mobile support tool recognizes it as "testdevice" and when I try updating recovey through the program it hangs once it says "downloading files". I'll post anything I can find as soon as I find anything. Please do the same. I just bought this phone yesterday and already managed to f it up.

You should be able to, as long as you can get adb to see it, you are good, you can even just adb push a rom over to the "NON" SDCard... and then just flash from TWRP...
The main problem we have is that without a SDCard that you can take out and put a rom on, we are stuck.

Helllo all,
i just received a Note 2 from a friend that suddenly stopped working.
It is a standard Note 2 early version (international model), no mods, no root.
when it is on usb charge , it shows the battery , with a non animating circle.
when i turn it on, it shows the white boot samsung logo text, GT N7100, and stays frozen there.
when i boot into factory recovery mode, i get a lot of red text with several mount failures, ending into the recovery menu
when i boot into Odin download mode, i can see the model name after the product name.
what i have tried so far:
per directions on samsung site, i have downloaded latest samsung usb drivers, Odin v 3.10.7 that should work with my version factory rom (TNL-N7100XXUFNI2-20141105083621).
the device is found by Odin (blue com line), the rom is loaded and sum checked in Odin, the write procedure Fails => NAND write fail.
then i thought ok, maybe the NAND is screwed up (as i seen in the red text), and found some sites talking about fixing the invalid arguments, as shown in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-LZvVLEC5o
I installed ADB, boot the phone into recovery.
With ADB list device , i can not find the phone
however when i choose in the phone: update through ADB
then i can list the device in ADB, but as sideload device.
there for i can not perform the rewrite procedure as shown in the video.
i am kinda stuck here, and do not know how sever the BRICK is.
and what way i should use to unbrick it, if that is still possible.
any suggestions/help would be appreciated
First of all: IT IS NOT SDS.
Second: You have done a couple of things that make no sense.
Either you didn't read the instructions on the vid or didn't understand:
The method shown needs either a booting device or a custom recovery
Third: There are a bunch of options to try
*Factory reset in stock recovery made?
*Recover device through Samsung Kies 3
*Flash OC1 firmware through Odin (I have no idea what you have linked above, can't open)
Hi Androidwizzard, what makes you sure that it is not SDS ?
# factory reset in stock recovery doesn't work => mount failures
# kies can not connect to the device, while it is not booted?
i tried to connect in recovery mode and download mode, nothing worked.
# i did try to flash device through odin with (OC1?) => NAND write fail
i didn't link to any file, it was just the name of the official ROM file. But if you wish to see a link , it is this:

Soft bricked device is no SDS - so simple
Only on 4.1.1 original firmware AND the insane chip too SDS is possible and by no means sure.
Kies is able to connect to unbooted device - I have tested a view times - a matter of driver maybe and it must be turned on.
The linked firmware is for t-mobile Netherland and you have that provider and you are from there?

The device is factory default and on it's original firmware
# Kies is able to connect to unbooted device - I have tested a view times - a matter of driver maybe and it must be turned on.
driver and software are installed ok, laptop is clean , the problem is the device.

obviously yes, the person from who the phone is has that provider and yes we are there...
@Androidwizzard have you ever had experience with EFS mount failures?
that occur out of nowhere, with simple daily use ?
Yes, I have and flashed newest firmware through Odin - needed more than one attempt but at the end success.
One time I used Kies3 to restore.
Hi, thanks for your reply.
But i asked if you have experience with EFS mount failures?

System Prop to disable high volume warning?

Does anyone know the system.prop to disable the high volume warning? I see in this Magisk Module that it modifies
Code:
audio.safemedia.bypass=true
but that doesn't seem to work on Samsung firmware. I remember finding the alternative setting somewhere, but I had to flash stock firmware and lost it, and can't seem to find it again.
By the time you are using Magisk instead of SuperSu just download the module ... If you want to do it by yourself just download BuildCrop from PlayStore, find the line, change it and you are done !

And if I'm not wrong you will find the same code with the difference that it will has true instead of false. I have not tried such a thing before so do it with your own risk

I do have the module, but it doesn't work (other comments on the thread have noted other Samsung phones it doesn't work for). I was planning on just changing the line the module edits to the line Samsung uses. Do you know what it is?
I really don't want you to boot loop or something like that... So in... Let's say 12 hours I will provide you a way to remove that option. I may boot loop but I really don't care, I'm gonna install a new room anyways

I was just in a boot loop, and just reflashed stock rom (which is why I need this setting, cause I had it before, but lost it). Thanks for the concern, but this is the ideal time to boot loop.

Ahahaha I feel you man. But something is stared getting on my nerves !!! I don't know if it is because I'm running Android 7.0 instead of Android 6.0, but I tried editing build.prop by adding a line on it...
audio.safemedia.bypass=true
But it does not seems to be working ... I found a threat on Reddit about that but they werre based on Android 6.0 .... So I have no idea what to do (you can download an app from PlayStore or even download Xposed and download a module ...) But it is even worth it ?

Hahaha stupid me ! https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-volume-steps-increase-magisk-v10-t3554996/page5
Go there and download the file on that page, and then flash it , I'm gonna try it! If I won't be back at least in 10 minutes , that means I ran intro a boot loop
---------- Post added at 02:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:12 AM ----------
None of those flashable files seems to work. I'm truly sorry ... Maybe just go and ask the OP of that threat instead
