Hey Guys,
Im new to the Android community coming across from an iPhone. I have landed myself an HTC One M8 but have no idea what to do next! (Ask me how to "Jailbreak" iPhones and I'm your guy) but the whole root process and custom ROMs are confusing me.
Basically I'm in Australia on the Telstra network (that seems to matter with rooting) and have the M8 on Android 6.0
Where is my next step? Im keen to learn but there are 100s of threads on this question and I simply don't know where to start, so for that I apologise.
Thanks in advance,

Since you're new to the forum, I'll give some (hopefully) friendly advice on posting: There is a thread sticky at the top of this section, and it says clearly "Please Read before posting" and describes what belong in this section, and questions/help requests is not one of them.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-dream-g1/general/guide-to-htc-device-forums-please-read-t3234095
No need to try to change or move this thread (you can't). So I'll request to the mods to have it moved.
Now on to the real stuff. The exact process depends on what you want to do precisely, root or flash a custom ROM. Since on this device, you do not actually need to root before flashing a ROM. But some folks may want to stay on the stock ROM, but with root.
And the process for one versus the other will have some differences.

Toolkit hasn't been updated in over a year and a half. It contains an extremely obsolete version of TWRP, which will cause issues with the OP's Marshmallow device.
Further, IMO the toolkit seeks to provide a solution for a problem which doesn't exist. The steps to unlock the bootloader, and flash custom recovery are easy to do "manually" without the toolkit. And learning to do so (for those that don't already know these skills) should be mandatory for anyone wishing to mods this phone.
Most of what the OP would need to know, is contained in Vomer's excellent guide here. Although the guide hasn't been kept up to date, so I'll provide the following caveats:
1) Follow Sections 0 and 1, to unlock the bootloader.
2) Use current version TWRP 3.0.2 from here, instead of the old version listed(and linked) in the guide. Somewhat obviously, the fastboot command used to flash TWRP will need to be changed to contain the proper file name (newer version number). Alternately, just rename the file something like twrp.img, and use that in the fastboot command.
3) Do not follow Sections 2 (S-off, SuperCID) or 3. They aren't needed for root or flashing ROMs, and the info is no longer accurate.
After that, the way to proceed depends on the 2 different paths I stated in my last post: stock ROM with root; or flash custom ROM.
Stock ROM with root: Make a TWRP backup of the stock (unrooted) ROM, then flash SuperSU. Vomer's guide automatically links to the latest stable version. But it should be noted, that the latest is SuperSU 2.78. Many folks make the mistake of using old versions SuperSU (<2.52 or thereabouts) which won't work on Marshmallow, and will result in being stuck in a bootloop.
Flash custom ROM: No need to root before flashing a custom ROM. What you do in this case:
a) Make a TWRP backup of your stock ROM
b) Backup anything you want to keep, by your method of choice (copy to computer, Titanium Backup, cloud, etc.)
c) Put the ROM on the phone
d) Boot into TWRP, select Wipe, and do the default wipe (Dalvik, Cache, and Data)
e) Select Install in TWRP, and choose the ROM to flash it.
f) Reboot and drink beer, you're done

Hi,
I'd be really grateful to anyone who can answer my newbie questions.
I'm looking to follow the guide to downgrade my non-network-branded (i.e. sim-free) Desire HD, so I can permanently root it. Then I intend to follow the other guide so I can still update to the latest official release. My primary requirement for rooting is just so I can make complete backups of my phone's state in future. Though I'll probably play about with other community ROMs too!
Sorry if answers to my questions are elsewhere, and feel free just to point if that's the case. I've searched but haven't found definitive answers. Knowing these things will increase my understanding. Although I'm used to tinkering with things a little am in no way a programmer and my last phone was a Nokia E65!
1) Please can someone list the different parts of the phone's memories, including which are impossible to write over and which are. E.g. my understanding is:
--One flash chip with:
- 'bootloader', which to me sounds like a PC's BIOS or the kind of app you can boot into on a standard desktop PC when choosing which OS to boot into;
- factory image partition;
- separate partition for over the air updates;
- 1GB partition for user-writeable memory for things like apps installed on the phone, contacts, etc.
--Physically separate 'radio' chip that can be overwritten (I don't understand the difference between this and the OS though)
--RAM;
--microSD card.
2) After following the two guides mentioned above, will I still be able to receive over the air HTC updates in future? And if not, does that mean I'd be relying on the community to make available any official updates? I bought my DHD through an official UK retailer.
3) After following the two guides mentioned above, will it still be possible to restore my phone to its factory state in future, e.g. for resale or sending back to HTC, so everything that we unlock ('eng s-off', 'radio s-off', etc., which fries my brain right now) is locked again? If so, can a guide to this process be linked to?
4) I understand it's possible to switch between custom ROMs easily. When this is done, does that mean all system settings, such as phone contacts and app settings are also switched, or are these settings written to a different part of the phone memory?
I'll be sure to thank (and donate) for your time. Many thanks in advance as well!
Hi, I just bought the DHD 3 weeks ago and it is still difficult to understand to understand all this android stuff sometimes
1) I was a little lost at the beginning too, I don't know if this is what you are looking for but this is what I understood.
There are 4 flashable "things" :
- ROM OS (android OS)
- Linux Kernel (linux kernel)
- ROM radio (another ROM that manage ONLY the hardware stuff like 3G, Wi-Fi, bluetooth, GPS...)
- bootloader (exactly like a bios) and contains a recovery menu (that can be flashed by clockworkmod for example)
The ROM radio seems independant and you can flashed it separatly from the other it doesn't bother. The last versions improve battery life or GPS startup etc...
The ROM OS (android) need to be flashed with the kernel otherwise you can have some problem (wi-fi or data network that doesn't work anymore...).
S-Off means security off and it is necessary to do it if you want to write a new recovery on the bootloader or flash a new radio ROM...
Ther is two kind of S-Off but I'm not sure of the meaning so I let you watch about it.
When you install through the official ways :
1 OTA : You need to have the official recovery from the bootloader otherwise it will NOT work (no OTA with clockworkmod)
If your phone is network-branded you need a goldcard here and/or superCID (I don't really understand here lol)
After the installation I think you keep the S-Off but you're not root anymore.
2 RUU : It will install/reinstall everything (ROM OS, kernel, ROM radio and bootloader).
It is even capable of reseting your CID (your not concerned here because your phone is non-network-branded)
If think you loose the S-Off (or ENG S-Off -> SHIPS S-Off), you're not root anymore...
If you want to keep S-OFF, SuperCID and ClockWorkMod you need to :
1 flash the ROM OS through the ClockWorkMod recovery -> update.zip (you can give it the OTA file .zip, it will only flash the ROM OS)
2 flash the kernel manualy with fastboot (you can also use the boot.img contain in your OTA file)
3 flash the ROM radio (there is the excellent tuto here on XDA about this)
2) OTA will not be possible if you want to use clockworkmod. I was a little anxious about that too at the beginning! But you can find the official
ROMS REALLY easily on XDA probably before your provider send it to you. And when you do everything manually, you can CHOOSE wich radio ROM you want,
you can do backup REALLY quickly with clockworkmod and you can come back (things you can't do if you use OTA)... The last point that confort me
in doing all of this is that you can download OTA but not install it to pick up the ROMs inside and the kernel ! I did it last week and my phone
is now running the two ROMS that was contained in the OTA file AND the kernel. This is why I'm not worried anymore.
3) I never tried to restore my phone to its exact factory settings but I think you can...
4) I don't really now. In my case, I decided to use Google for my contact too, so when I flash, a few minutes later I have all my contacts
I hope my english is not too bad for explainations like this
Hi poumpoum,
Firstly, thanks so much for taking the time to help. Your English is ten times better than my Française! If you've a PayPal account you'd like to Personal Message me, or just the name of your preferred charity, I'd like to say a little thanks that way too.
Okay: so I understand that doing these cool things to my phone means I won't be able to update it over the air. You've convinced me this isn't a problem because any updates find their way to the community.
I'm also convinced I can restore my phone completely to factory defaults due to this thread (the thread's for a different region but the principle still stands).
Thanks for clarifying the radio ROM shares the same physical chip as all the other memory (including the RAM actually, I found this out).
This thread also explained some of the jargon to me.
You're welcome
First of all I would like to say this this is not the usual "How do i root?" question. I'm actually not looking for a HOWTO, but more for a detailed explanation about the process. I also wasn't sure if this thread should be posted in the developers or the general forums, so please move it to the general forum I you think it should be posted there.
I have an HTC Desire HD device, and I have seen countless tutorials about rooting, changing ROMs and changing other components which I actually don't know.
The problems with these tutorials:
1. They don't really explain what they are asking you to do. This actually may be convenient for most users, but I'm the kind of person that won't run any commands on his phone without actually realizing what they do.
2. These tutorials don't explain what can I do if something messes up.
I'm a programmer and I'm very familiar with Linux systems, but I am relatively new to Android. So after reading all sorts of tutorials, here are my questions:
About rooting in general
========================
1. How is obtaining root access in Android systems different from obtaining one in Unix systems?
2. Once I obtain root access, does that mean that all my applications runs as the root user? If so, isn't that a security risk?
3. Android have a different permissions system for applications than the classic Unix permissions system, since each applications must specify what does it want to do to the phone (Make phone calls, read the phone book, etc...), what happens to this permissions system once I obtain root access? Can any application use this root access to compromise my phone?
4. Is rooting my phone considered "hacking", or is it something legitimate like obtaining root access in a regular Unix system? Do all these rooting tools actually use exploits in the Android system to obtain root access?
Some questions about the downgrading process
=============================================
I read that in order to obtain root access on new HTC desire HD devices, I first my downgrade the phone's firmware. The questions below are based on the tutorial in addictivetips (I can't post a link since this is my first message)
1. Do I still have to do that, or maybe there's a new rooting method that doesn't require downgrading?
2. Once I downgrade and obtain root access, can I upgrade my ROM back to the new official ROM with root access, or does that mean that now I can only install custom ROMs?
3. Does downgrading the phone means I expose it to old security vulnerabilities?
4. My phone is branded. The tutorial suggest to prepare a "gold-card" by overwriting some bytes on the SD card, but none of them explained what does it mean. I would like to technically realize what does a gold card mean, and what does overwriting these specific bytes in the SD card mean.
5. What are the meaning of the commands that I should type before rebooting my phone in recovery mode?
Some HTC specifc questions
==========================
The rooting tutorial says that after rooting I should obtain S-OFF, again, without really explaining what does it mean. As far as I realize, this is an HTC specific security mechanism.
1. What is it there for? Is it actually there to make my phone safer or is it there just to prevent me from changing my ROM?
2. I realized that there is S-OFF and Eng S-OFF, and the latter means gaining "Complete control" on my phone. What can I do with this "Complete control" that I can't do with normal S-OFF?
Using different ROMs
====================
1. I saw that there are some custom ROMs with HTC Sense. How is that possible? Isn't HTC Sense a proprietary HTC piece of software?
2. When I decide to use a specific ROM, how do can I make sure I have the latest Android version? Do I get automatic updates like when using the stock ROM, or is it my responsibility to always check if there's a new version?
If something messes up
======================
1. How can I go back to the stock ROM if the downgrading/rooting process messes up?
2. What can I do if a custom ROM installation messes up? Can I go back to the downgraded ROM?
Thank you

No problem!
Sorry I wasn't a bigger help.
You could try checking the Android Development and Hacking for a few more non-HTC related answers!
After countless hours of searching over all related posts I am still confused and pretty much intimidated on the flashing aspect. From all my searching expeditions till now I managed to outline some of the points but I don't know how to move forward with them. Also I am concerned with the possibilities of getting the device unresponsive just because of my stupidity, want to gain full knowledge before going forward with the process.
So as per my findings, for installing a CFW like CM12, I require the following things,
1. Unlocked Bootloader.
The Bootloader on my XM SS can be unlocked, I did a check on that but the thing that's bugging me is the occurrence of bootloop.
Question for this point: What is the proper method to unlock the bootloader?
2. Rooted phone.
This is the step that has confused me from the beginning. Some posts mention that rooting is essential requirement to get a fully functional CFW and in some posts there is a not a single mention for the requirement of a rooted phone.
Question for this point: Is rooting essential? What is the best step by step method that you use to root your device?
3. Back up data.
I read somewhere that unlocking the bootloader erases some of the important information like the IMEI number, DRM keys and other important stuff? Also the importance of backing up data like contacts and other stuff externally.
Question for this point: How to do a proper backup? How to go on backing up contacts, whatsapp databases etc?
4. Installing a custom recovery?
Honestly I am totally confused with this topic. What does custom recovery actually do? Best custom recover for CM12?
Question for this point: How to select and install a custom recovery?
5. Adb, Fastboot drivers.
Is it essential to actually download the full adb package that google provides to develop android apps? And are fastboot drivers available for windows 8.1? Will the phone management software provided by Sony work as a driver?
Question for this point: ADB, Fastboot driver installation?
6. Flashing the CM12.
The most important step in the whole process? How to go on with this step so as to successfully flash the firmware? Restoring the backed up data?
Question for this point: Steps to properly flash the CM12?
7. Link2SD, App2SD?
Which one will you suggest and how to go on installing it?
I know that most of you will find it bothersome to answer so many questions in a single go but I intend this topic to be a guiding thread for noobs like me who are beginners that want to flash some CFW on their devices.
So all the posts that you make are really appreciated! Please link in the posts that you think will answer the questions in layman terms for everyone to understand.
Thanks for taking your time to read this thread
Have a good day! :fingers-crossed:
Can anyone please help? :crying:
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2484622 Follow everything he said, while using some common sense. Just to avoid you in doing so much research on some common problems I faced, :
i) If any errors occur, just close flashtool and re-open it, even if the errors continue to happen, just close and open flashtool again.
ii) You will experience bootloop and the end of the procedure, so just flash the tft http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2779412
2. Just stay rooted, better safe than sorry Here's the guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-m/general/towel-root-steps-to-root-t2789990 Understand the procedure first then continue.
3. You can export your contacts into your sim card tho, just open up the telephony app and go to contacts and open up the option or menu thingy in it (I think the icon was a 3 dot to access the options menu) and you'll see the Export/Import tab on it. You know what to do after this After root, I suggest getting the app Titanium Backup, really helpful. If possible, after the backup, move the folder to the sdcard, so it will never be lost (or to your pc, much safer).
4. Custom recovery.. well, I'm no expert but just think it this way, you're life saver when you do something wrong to your phone (and that it can still turn on, but couldn't get pass the boot animation) and provided that you had made a Nandroid backup before(a system backup). It can restore your phone back to the last time you've backuped it. This one for Stock 4.3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-m/development/recovery-philz-touch-6-41-6-xm-dual-t2795778 and this one for afteryou've installed CM12 http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...very-cwm-twrp-recoveries-custom-roms-t3016507
5. I'm not sure on this one, sorry:crying: ADB drivers and the fastboot drivers installed automatically for me:silly:
6. I think this video would be a bit helpful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkNu0tiNro8
7. I don't know on this, I never used them. Soz :C
All the best:fingers-crossed: though my advice would be to stay Rooted for awhile before unlocking the bootloader, so you'd at least familiarize yourself with the terms that'll you'll most probably face.
The fastboot driver from google didnt work for me, use the ones from the sony bootloader unlock site. For win8.1 you need to disable signature verification to install them.
Thank you so much @AndyPhoenix9879
You are a lifesaver! I was finally able to flash CM2.1 on my Xperia M
Hello,
I have been trying very hard to grasp on this myself, and not post a thread like this but I'm afraid my head is spinning and I'm hoping someone here will be kind enough to help me.
I have owned an M8S for a while and would like to gain root access (mainly so I can use link2sd and expand storage space). I followed many links and threads carefully, but I am nervous to begin any process as the instructions are... vague, I guess. There are many of you who disagree with me I'm sure, but please be patient with me.
I have read extensively through this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/make-custom-recovery-htc-one-m8s-t3114245
Tried to see how much of this (Linux) guide, though I run a Windows 10 machine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/rooting-htc-one-m8s-t3235232
I hope you can help me learn.
I have rooted several android devices before, and I've never been very confused by the process, but this one has left me lost.
Happy New Year and thanks for any help and support!
Pk
I don't have the M8S, but the process looks straightforward (similar to M8, as well as most fairly recent HTC devices):
1) Unlock bootloader via HTCDev.com (go to the website, and its pretty self-explantory)
2) Use fastboot to flash TWRP custom recovery
3) Flash SuperSU and Busybox using TWRP
I'd also add a step before 3 above, use TWRP to make a backup of the stock ROM. Once you have that backed up, anything that happens from step 3 is reversible by restoring the backup.
In fact, everything in the process is totally reversible by RUU, with the exception that the bootloader flag will only every say RELOCKED instead of LOCKED.
Is there a particular question, or step you have a problem with.

Just read and learn as much as you can before doing anything. Don't do anything that isn't form a current, reputable source. Do those things, and you will be fine.
portachking, I am very new to rooting and all that follows it. I would be very grateful if you post back your experiences when you have time, with the challenges you met (if any) and how you solved them...
I read from this page that "When the phone is rooted in changes to the phone are reset on restart". Is this the case for you as well?

2nd Link in the top post describes it (with link to SuperSU).
To root, just flash SuperSU 2.67 in TWRP.
Thanks for the reply. Then i must have missed something. I will try it out this weekend.
It didnt work.
I did everything exactly as described. I have twrp, open it in fastboot with cmd. When i am in twrp, i clicked install, and installed the supersu beta zip and busybox zip. Still i dont have root access.

I tried it multiple times, from my internal storage and sd card. I have bootloader unlocked, i use fastboot boot twrp version 2.8.6.0 if i remember correctly (not at home at the moment) and clicked install. Then i made sure i install the zip super su and busybox file from the root of the sd card, and tried internal storage as well. From that screen, it seems it installs correctly, but when i reboot and use a rootchecker app, it says im not rooted.
Can someone please help me? Ive read up on lots of posts and watched youtube vids of twrp rooting to see if i did it correctly.
Thanks in advance

Please confirm what version SuperSU you used.
When flashing SuperSU, it should have given you the option of "systemless root" or "traditional root" (or something along those lines).
If you picked systemless root, it probably won't show up on root checker apps. Seeing as Link2SD is your main reason for root, have you checked that the app works or not?
I have a problem with my HTC one M8 At&t (It's unlocked to any provider) it's also rooted so if you can help me either unroot it or add a ROM that would be so helpful.
Well the problem with my phone is.
1) It won't update to 6.0 its stuck on 5.0.2
2) ROMS won't install at all. Maybe because it doesn't have TWRP (I don't know where to get that)
3) The phone is S-on relocked and it says "This device has been tampered' then a warning
I asked HTC and they didn't help at all. I asked people that I know but they are IOS.
So this is the last resort. I was recommended by a friend to ask you wonderful people. I mean i have some knowledge but it don't have anyone to show me the ropes of how to do it. But please if you guys can help add link with steps.
Thank you and have a good day dudes.

1. If it is AT&T, it won't update on non-AT&T network.
2. Unlock bootloader and install TWRP
3. The phone was unlocked before and now it is relocked.

I'd suggest you watch this video to install TWRP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HWj_1KHbuY

I would suggest the OP not follow that video. Followed literally, it will not only direct the OP to install a horribly obsolete version of TWRP, but also one that is not intended for his version of the M8. The "wlv" version TWRP in the video is for Verizon, and would install TWRP to the wrong partition, maybe even brick the phone. TWRP has since been updated and unified to identify the M8 version, and install on the proper partition accordingly; but such was not the case at the time the video was created.
This is one of the main reasons I don't recommend rooting by watching YouTube videos. They aren't detailed enough to point out all the nuances and potential pitfalls of the process. They just spoonfeed enough knowledge to you get you into big trouble, without any knowledge or skills to get you out of that hole.
Also, the random "root" website referenced in the video doesn't appear to have any downloadable files any longer, anyway. At least not that I can find, upon examination. So if the OP that route, they would have hit a dead end. I also personally don't recommend such "root" websites, as they almost always just steal content from XDA, without giving proper credit.
All the info the OP needs is right here on XDA. An excellent guide for unlocking the bootloader and installing custom recovery is here. Although the guide is dated (hard for anything for this phone to not be dated at this point - it is over 2 years old) and I have the following additional advice:
- HTC drivers on the guide are dated. But if you plug the phone into your PC, it should auto-install HTC Sync and the required drivers
- You can get TWRP right from the source here. I'm not sure if your existing firmware will play well with the latest version (TWRP 3.0.x), but I'm pretty sure version 2.8.7.0 will work well (and known to be very stable).
- Only need to follow the guide through "ROOTING YOUR DEVICE" Step 8, that is unlocking the bootloader and installing custom recovery (don't flash SuperSU). From there, get the desired custom ROM on the phone, boot into TWRP, backup the current stock ROM, then do default wipe (data, cache, Dalvik) in TWRP and flash the ROM.

An alternative would be to flash the Marshmallow RUU to update to full stock image. But in order to do so, the OP will have to update to Marshmallow firmware (which requires some knowledge of using fastboot) and then run the Marshmallow RUU. The RUU in listed on my AT&T M8 Index thread here (along with a lot of other useful info), with the info/link for flashing firmware highlighted in red text.
