Yup. I'd say a case is definitely needed. I would've loved to have been able to use it with just a skin on but the camera bump makes me scared to put the phone down on hard surfaces and getting the lens scratched.

Totally agree with the first 2 comments; you will need a case.

Argh that's a pain!
No case really works nicely in my opinion.
Dbrand do help but aren't game changers.

Funny thing, I'm using the phone since day one (over 4 months now) without any cases or skins and have no issues with it being slippery; also don't have any scratches on any part of the device.

Metal ring is slightly higher than lens itself (0.2mm - just measured it with vernier caliper ) so the lens does not make direct contact with the surface you put the phone on.
Hard flat surfaces (like tables) are not a problem, but I'd still avoid rough surfaces (like concrete etc.).

iPad like Smart Case

Just bought a nexus 7.
And I am looking for a case which is exactly like the ipad smart cover (with no back cover) and magnetic
I have only found ones with back and front.
Thanks

The iPad smart cover attaches with magnets. The iPad is made out of aluminum. The Nexus 7 is all plastic.
Don't think aluminum is magnetic.

Regardless, no the nexus 7 does not have the same kind of magnetic strip. The iPad has magnets in place that match up exactly with the smart cover magnets. You can see it here:
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad+2+Smart+Cover+Teardown/5089/1
Regardless of my flub with aluminum, You can wish for it all you want. it isn't going to happen. There were magnets in the first generation N7, too, and no magnet attachable covers.

The wake sleep function does, sure. The case you are linking to covers the back too. I have a case like that for my old Nexus 7. Hey believe me, I wish they would put out a cover without a back on it. Someone could totally manufacture one that works like the cover for the Galaxy Note. Where the case actually replaces the back cover completely, and replaces it with a back cover that has the front cover attached.
Like this:

Yeah true my S4 is like that
Does having it on the back make it much thicker?

It depends on the case. I had the Poetic hand strap one, and it added more bulk than I would like. But there's also a Poetic slimline that looks a lot better. The official premium Asus cover is supposed to be great as far as bulk is concerned, but it isn't a smart cover. No idea why they didn't slip a magnet in there.

Lemme guess ... because they knew about the magnet-wakingUp issue with the Nexus 7 ?!?
Or maybe it's the otherway around, they didn't test the feature since their covers doesn't have the magnet ?!?
It appears that some/many N7s are having the wake-up issue with SmartCovers.
If you have one of these Tabs, turn on the Bluetooth for now.

What magnet waking up issue? I had the Poetic hand strap smart cover on my gen 1 nexus 7 for an entire year, and it worked just like it was supposed to. There were issues with the cases with magnets when the first started releasing them. That was because they were using magnets that were too strong, and would put the n7 back to sleep if you folded the front cover back. I had this issue with the first cover I got from Poetic. There was pretty considerable backlash, and they fixed the problem within a few days. They even sent out free cases with the updated magnet to anyone that bought the problematic ones.
I guess you're one of those lucky owners without this issue.
But many are having this issue for real, just google it or visit some of the threads here in XDA.
I noticed you mentioned 2012 Nexus 7. I have one with a 3rd-gen Poetic, so I know what you say.
This is a 2013 Nexus 7 thread, no ?

Yeah, I have no idea what he's talking about either. My N7 (2012 and 2013) had no issues with waking up, and I had smart-covers on both of them.
You're a lucky owner then.
I said some/many not ALL (tablets to have this issue).
I got the moko ultra slim and while it does add minimal bulk, it would be nice if they could just make the piece that attached to the back adhesive like the skins are. I'm thinking I may buy another one and try and hack it to achieve this.

I have the not waking up a smart cover issue only if I have an app like kindle open in I close the cover. If there is no app active, I have no issue. Maybe that is actually everyone's issue?
Smart covers are overrated. Just press the damn button and if you don't feel like pressing the button when you close your case then just wait the 30 seconds to a minute it takes your screen to timeout.
If I purchased the Poetic Ultra Slim, I would remove the magnet!

I really like my reveal case so far; except it seems like a really tight fit for the phone. Wish I would have realized that the Griffin site had them $10 cheaper than Motorola and in multiple colors.

I have an O'Box Commuter and am receiving a Reveal and the official car dock today. I will take pictures of the phone with both cases in the dock (assuming they both fit).
I got my Reveal case a couple days ago and I have to admit, I really like it! I bought a case from Motorola. A clear snap on hard case and took it off right away. I also got a Bear Motion case on Amazon that I never used. This reveal case has stayed on since I got it! The blue matches perfectly with the royal blue back of my phone. Thanks guys for the recommendation on this case.
just got my reveal today.
really nice case!!
cost $20 on ebay, which is not really cheap for a case. but i had a cheapo "cimo s-line" on my phone before that that cost me like $3-4. this is much nicer looking, the buttons click better and its actually feels slightly smaller in hand. it really is a small case.
i think its worth it, feels a little better and looks much nicer (the s-line case looked terrible). given im a klutz who manages to knock my phone off a table or something nearly every day it seems like a case was needed. (probably dropped my moto x like 4-5 times this week...)
fit and finish on the reveal is perfect. some part of me wishes i had a phone that wasnt just black weave now, to show off with the see through part.
i do have to say one thing.
this case the clear part scratches up really easily. i put the phone + case my desk plastic side down and there were a ton of fine scratches. tried to polish them out with some meguirs plastx that i had (works great on car dash guages by the way) and it made even more. yes its a case, and its made to be scratched, but be aware the ones wth these hard plastic finishes seem to scratch up quick

Yeah, mine is all scratched up too but it's because it gets tossed in my tool bag. I'd rather the case get scratched than my phone!
Anyone tried casemate's naked tough case? Is this pretty much the same one
Sent from my XT1058 using Tapatalk
The power support aire jacket case has some self healing coating on it that seems to not scratch as easy as the Griffin. I have both and the air jacket is higher quality. My reveal came in the box with lots of scratches straight from Motorola.

Chrome edge border around phone...

Anyone notice how easy it is to dent or scratch the chrome edge border around the phone? I have babied mine to the maximum extent, and when inspecting it today I see very small dent like imperfections on two corners of my note 3. No idea how they got there but it's annoying.
Is everyone's like this?

I noticed the same thing. My son also has the same on his. I could not wait to get a case on it just to avoid any other dents or blemishes. Like you I babied my phone to the max. Fortunately the case covers the one small blemish...
Remember its plastic
Dings, chips, peeling etc are all mitigated by using a case.
The phone case is plastic which makes it work best for signals, light for lesser weight and provides some shock prevention when dropped. Metal cases, weaken signals, are typically heavier and don't provide much shock prevention when dropped (ie metal doesn't give).
I see they sell middle housings to replace damaged ones. Same thing with back housing where the camera lens is. Problem is, how would you take the screen off the middle housing to replace just the housing. They sell a more expensive screen and middle housing combo, but for much more money and it's unnecessary if the current screen is perfect.

The chromed plastic bezel is indeed incredibly fragile...it kinda sucks actually. I'm waiting to get my Ballistic SG MAXX case and have had my phone for a month without protection now (it takes soooo long for the good cases to be released). I've been EXTRA careful but noticed that I slightly dented it just by putting the phone face down on a table...gently. So right now it's sitting either in my pocket or on a napkin on my desk so as not to scratch/dent the bezel or scratch the camera...can't wait to get my case.

Just remember, if anyone buys a hybrid case that is hard on the inside it will scuff the chrome bezel. I use soft on the inside and hard on the outside.
Yeah I know, learned this with Otterbox some years ago. Thankfully, Ballistic Cases are soft on the inside (as are Trident Case also).

Looks like a complete strip down is required to change this part, part seems to be the main chasis of the handset.

I know no one has done it yet. The principle as far as I am aware is the same, total strip down. Once stripped down put all the parts back in the new chasis.

Eh, I don't like using cases, makes the phone feel like crap. And with how delicate the chrome is, it is bound to show them. I just like to have a spare to swap out when mine gets bad, puts my mind at ease. Unfortunately it's very difficult to do with the chrome area on this phone as it's part of what's bonded to the screen, and not the back assembly
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
Very fragile indeed. I used a butter knife to lift off the battery door and dented it. Have had a cheap soft TPU case on it since day one though and I would not use it without one
Cases take away from the beauty and feel of the phone though

That was my concern. I want more information on any type of paddind around the corners. Basically you protect theh phone from dings from drops but that does you no good when the screen shatters from the shock/impact. I used to have a hard plastic case for my GS3 and I dropped it taking it out of my pocket. The screen cracked but the body of the phone was fine. You wouldn't be able to tell by looking at the phone itself that it was ever dropped after replacing the screen unless you looked on the case.
A review of the Kommandment case:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/1xdzsz/so_kommandment_case_came_in_today/
I wouldn't bother with any full metal case - wireless signal will be severely affected.

The Reddit review posted a couple above here speaks to that: apparently it's a great looking case, but no drop protection/bumpering, just surface protection. Darn, because that's a snazzy-looking case.
I have this case and from my experience, i did not have any issues with reception. I was worried at first forking out that much money for a case. The plastic window (separate piece) does get scratched easily. My one came with a few deep scratches. i contacted support and they were happy enough to send me a replacement piece. The case is very nice and premium to the feel.
In the picture the back is not 100% plastic. Only the window. The back frame (black part) surrounding the windows is aluminum.
Pros
- Very premium and unique compared to all the other cases
- Did not have any wifi/reception issues (Personally)
- Not an iphone fan but i do love the build quality of them and this case will make you feel like you're holding a oversized iphone 4/4s/5/5s
Cons
- Back plastic will get scratched from general wear and tear.
- If you look close enough you will see some imperfections like the volume buttons look a bit scratched (not painted properly? didn't worry me)
Other than those, i love this case. Yes, it is very expensive but i cannot find any other case like this.

Yeah fair point but I'm thinking nothing could beat the protection of a flip case.. An otterbox has the fatal flaw of not protecting the screen.. Undeniably the most important part.

I couldn't help myself, I grabbed a black one and a red/white one, slapped the black plastic cover over the red TPU. Suffice it to say, it looks pretty dope.

I was thinking about doing the same thing, but I chose to just stick with the all black since I was being cheap and didn't want to buy 2 otterbox cases lol. I don't know why they didn't make that an option for the case anyway

What protector? Is it aligned under the plastic or inline with it?
