Chrome edge border around phone... - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Anyone notice how easy it is to dent or scratch the chrome edge border around the phone? I have babied mine to the maximum extent, and when inspecting it today I see very small dent like imperfections on two corners of my note 3. No idea how they got there but it's annoying.
Is everyone's like this?

I noticed the same thing. My son also has the same on his. I could not wait to get a case on it just to avoid any other dents or blemishes. Like you I babied my phone to the max. Fortunately the case covers the one small blemish...

Remember its plastic

Dings, chips, peeling etc are all mitigated by using a case.
The phone case is plastic which makes it work best for signals, light for lesser weight and provides some shock prevention when dropped. Metal cases, weaken signals, are typically heavier and don't provide much shock prevention when dropped (ie metal doesn't give).

I see they sell middle housings to replace damaged ones. Same thing with back housing where the camera lens is. Problem is, how would you take the screen off the middle housing to replace just the housing. They sell a more expensive screen and middle housing combo, but for much more money and it's unnecessary if the current screen is perfect.

The chromed plastic bezel is indeed incredibly fragile...it kinda sucks actually. I'm waiting to get my Ballistic SG MAXX case and have had my phone for a month without protection now (it takes soooo long for the good cases to be released). I've been EXTRA careful but noticed that I slightly dented it just by putting the phone face down on a table...gently. So right now it's sitting either in my pocket or on a napkin on my desk so as not to scratch/dent the bezel or scratch the camera...can't wait to get my case.

Just remember, if anyone buys a hybrid case that is hard on the inside it will scuff the chrome bezel. I use soft on the inside and hard on the outside.

Yeah I know, learned this with Otterbox some years ago. Thankfully, Ballistic Cases are soft on the inside (as are Trident Case also).

Any ideas on middle housing replacement?

Looks like a complete strip down is required to change this part, part seems to be the main chasis of the handset.

Look on youtube. You need to find a video showing taking screen and digitizer off at the same time. You do not want to remove the glass only.

No one has done it yet for the note 3 sadly. I wish it was like the note 2 where the back housing also covered the sides, so replacing the back housing replaced everything visible but the screen

I know no one has done it yet. The principle as far as I am aware is the same, total strip down. Once stripped down put all the parts back in the new chasis.

The stripping it down isn't too hard as far as back cover and internals . It's the Damn screen removal that scares me lol

Eh, I don't like using cases, makes the phone feel like crap. And with how delicate the chrome is, it is bound to show them. I just like to have a spare to swap out when mine gets bad, puts my mind at ease. Unfortunately it's very difficult to do with the chrome area on this phone as it's part of what's bonded to the screen, and not the back assembly
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk

Very fragile indeed. I used a butter knife to lift off the battery door and dented it. Have had a cheap soft TPU case on it since day one though and I would not use it without one

Cases take away from the beauty and feel of the phone though

Thin Cover Like iPad

Looking for some help. I've looked in many many places but haven't found a cover like the magnetic cover iPad users have. Is there such a cover for the Note 10.1? Looking for the thinnest cover I can find.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The thinnest cover will still be thicker than the iPad because we don't have the magnetic hinge that would allow only the front cover..
The Samsung cover is remarkably thin, but doesn't stay closed.
There are several trifold covers that have a back that then clips onto the corners of the table with a cut out for the pen., several ship from Hong Kong. Some on eBay, some on Amazon.com the stock is constantly changing.
I ended up getting one that is advertised ads unless thin by mistake. It uses an adhesive to stick to the back of the pad. I really DON'T like that. It also makes removing the pen difficult. Plus it doesn't have a slot to charge the tab without opening the cover. I had to cut one.
It has a fold over flap so that it doesn't open accidentally, but the cover is very floppy. I've only been using it a few weeks, but it just doesn't feel that solid.
In the end I'll probably go with a knockoff Samsung if I can find one that stays closed.
Sent from my GT-N8000 using Tapatalk HD
Agree with the above...the thinnest and sexiest is probably the Samsung magnetic book cover. I wasn't fond of it at first, but I've been using it over my i-Blason lately (which is also very nice but is no where near as thin). Lack of magnet to hold cover closed is really not an issue for me. If I am holding it it stays shut.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Guess I'll go for the Samsung cover .. hope it stays closed.
If you're going to buy a magnetic cover you should get the samsung one. Most other ones will probably cause problems with your wacom digitizer if the magnets get too close while you're using it.
I bought the Samsung white cover for £31 on Amazon, it just finishes the look of my tablet, love it. Jim
Samsung white cover with magnets works for me, I think that it can't have a magnetic closer option because it would interfere with the Wacom digitizer.

That may be, but just one more thin flap around the back would solve that. Some of the knock offs have just that.

I have also ordered one online. The "vip" model. I am expecting it to arrive tomorrow together with the GNote 10.1. I will post pictures with the Note with the case on and off so you can evalutate if this one is ok for you or not
My Note should arrive tomorrow and i'll pretty soon get a cover for it. I really dislike Samsungs build quality, i could scratch the whole back of it in one day i guess .. Like many did with the S3. My Motorola razr i doesn't even show a scratch even if it has been dropped by my girlfriend once and i don't handle it too careful.
I think i'll go with the Samsung Diary cover. I don't want my tablet to be bulky just because the manufacturer can't use proper materials and i'm too afraid of scratching it. But the fact that it won't stay closed is a major drawback, seems like i won't get the allround case i need. I think i'll have a look if i can get the Anymode I-Band case in Germany, at least this one looks good in my opinion.

I bought one from crazyondigital on amazon. had it for months and am pretty happy. it handles portrait and landscape. on amazon and inexpensive.

The Samsung Book Cover is about the closest to the smart cover. However I have an iPad 3 also and that smart cover is dangerous... It is really slick and if you are not really careful it will detach itself...
Have you tried this case? http://www.amazon.de/Stilgut-Origin...5PZW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1361754356&sr=8-2

As in update: I received a very cheap trifold magnetic cover that I ordered off of eBay similar to this. http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=200899933118&index=6&nav=SEARCH&nid=87359384600
So far it is working fine. It has magnets to keep closed and my pen works fine for drawing.
It has volume, power and charging ports and buttons exposed and you can easily remove your pen. The only thing I wanted exposed was the headphone jack, but a simple hole punch fixed that. Certainly cheap enough.
Now for the warning. The stick on cases are much worse than I expected. They are stuck on pretty much permanently, so switching cases for different activities was not possible. I do that to have a keyboard sometimes. Now the really bad part, the adhesive is strong enough that you can separate the back from the tablet if you are not careful.
I did just that. Nothing breaks, the back of the tablet it's very flexible, but it is a real bear to get back together. Let's just say I know more about the inside off the tab than I would want to this stage in the warranty.

Can you post some pics with the case

Does anyone not use a case on their S3?

(First of all, I'd like to say I'm not sure if I've posted this in the right section - I know how people here feel about that. So I'd like to apologise first.)
As the title says, I'm just wondering if there are people out there who don't use a case at all on their phone. Also, if you don't, why don't you. To those that don't use a cover, how has your phone fared in the time since you got it?
I've been using a case on mine since the day I got it. Today I took it off and forgot how nice the phone feels without a case. I'm feeling like I'd like to not use a case for a while to see how the phone fares in day-to-day life.
So, yeah, any comments are welcome, and thanks in advance!

I haven't put a single case on any smartphone i've owned until I got my S3. And I can't remember the last time I've dropped my smartphone on the ground (KNOCK ON WOOD) so that's how careful I am with my phones but I fully respect and appreciate the concept of accidents.
Searching on Youtube for "S3 drop tests" should tell you why. Every single video i've seen has demonstrated how much damage the S3 fares when dropped on the ground. That was enough to convince me to slap a case on it.
I did a weekend with no case recently cause I liked the feel of a naked phone. Then at a family party someone runs into me as I was standing there texting a friend and I drop and scratch the side of my phone. Nothing Broke but the scratch
Made me sad.

Nope, I didn't shell out a couple hundred dollars to slap a thick case on my phone to the point where you can't even see it.
I haven't but Ive ordered the lifeproof for it so it will be dressed finally when the case gets here

I actually used a case on every phone I had. Looking back, it was kinda a waste because I never dropped the things.
The gs3 unfortunately feels like it could snap at a fall of a couple centimetres though.

I don't shell out a few hundred and not protect my phone. Reason I always put a case is for resale value. Sold my S3 pretty fast since it was in perfect condition.

I used to be very protective and used an xtremeguard on the front screen and the back cover, along with a belkin tpu case. But I ended up taking all of it off because my OCD always kicked in when I saw dust caught on the edges of the case, and when the sides my xtremeguard lifted up slightly due to the case. The only protection I have now is that I cut out a small piece of my xtremeguard and carefully applied it to the camera lens so that it doesn't get scratched when I place the phone on the table.
I have been running my S3 this way for almost a month now, and it is still flawless. And I am very careful with my electronics so I expect it to be in pristine condition until it's time for an upgrade.
I just stopped using a case on my phone about a week ago. When its not in a case like super protective of it tho

If I remember correctly, only one of my phones ever had a screen cover (HTC Compact IV). Apart from that one, every phone has been how the designer(s) intended the phone to be.
I keep my phone in a PDA belt pouch and occassionally in an empty pocket in my trousers.

That was my concern. I want more information on any type of paddind around the corners. Basically you protect theh phone from dings from drops but that does you no good when the screen shatters from the shock/impact. I used to have a hard plastic case for my GS3 and I dropped it taking it out of my pocket. The screen cracked but the body of the phone was fine. You wouldn't be able to tell by looking at the phone itself that it was ever dropped after replacing the screen unless you looked on the case.
A review of the Kommandment case:

I wouldn't bother with any full metal case - wireless signal will be severely affected.

The Reddit review posted a couple above here speaks to that: apparently it's a great looking case, but no drop protection/bumpering, just surface protection. Darn, because that's a snazzy-looking case.
I have this case and from my experience, i did not have any issues with reception. I was worried at first forking out that much money for a case. The plastic window (separate piece) does get scratched easily. My one came with a few deep scratches. i contacted support and they were happy enough to send me a replacement piece. The case is very nice and premium to the feel.
In the picture the back is not 100% plastic. Only the window. The back frame (black part) surrounding the windows is aluminum.
Pros
- Very premium and unique compared to all the other cases
- Did not have any wifi/reception issues (Personally)
- Not an iphone fan but i do love the build quality of them and this case will make you feel like you're holding a oversized iphone 4/4s/5/5s
Cons
- Back plastic will get scratched from general wear and tear.
- If you look close enough you will see some imperfections like the volume buttons look a bit scratched (not painted properly? didn't worry me)
Other than those, i love this case. Yes, it is very expensive but i cannot find any other case like this.

You can/should take off that IMEI sticker from the back of your phone.
You can still access it in your about phone settings, and it is also on the box your phone came in.
New kommandant back plate is out, but i don't know how it looks on black nexus 5... Any ideas??

It seems such a sin to put something so bulky on a phone that's been engineered to be light, thin and tough. I'll probably just opt for something that keeps the camera window and screen off of surfaces when laid on their respective sides.

i always run a defender once they're available, so im used to them. i even liked the one on the note 7 as well. if i didnt have a bulkier case i'd probably trash a phone within a few weeks.
Giving the so call "military grade" design I say get a basic case or if lifeproof make one get that. Everyone have their choice though so ehh lol otter box will make it bigger to an already big phone...

i get it... perhaps i would reconsider if the v20 were water resistant.
So far I'm loving the OtterBox case is about the same size as my Note 4 with its OtterBox case and given that I'm moving today the phone probably see some abuse and I'm glad it's wrapped up in a nice safe package

I'm moving and I wasn't able to take a picture of the case on my phone with my wife's phone yet. When we stop for the day I will take a picture or two

sorry for the delay. moving sucks.
Thanks for the pictures.
I picked up my phone today and got the defender as well. This is probably the hardest defender to remove. I nearly ripped off multiple fingernails. Can't wait for a decent tempered glass so can rip this crappy plastic out.

No problem. I feel your pain I went through the same thing 3 years ago, seems like you'll never be done.

I'm going to pick up the defender today as well. How is the built in protector compared to previous defender cases? I used to always use them but eventually moved away. I never liked how it seemed to have a gap against the screen, has that changed?

This one seems to fit pretty tight with no gap and no extract tapping sound whenever you tap the screen. I'm having absolutely no issue with this 1
Yeah, mines fits crazy snug and once it gets some hand oil on it glides just as good as the glass.

It's not too bad, but it's still the same crappy plastic. I can't wait for a good tempered glass.

I'm waiting for the zerolemon case and hoping for at least 9k mah. But looks like they don't make full cases anymore so will have to see if a tempered can fit under it. My Note 3 10k mah one works with my tempered.

I picked up the defender yesterday. I was initially impressed, they have really improved the built in screen protector from what I remember. The outer shell is also improved, it doesn't seem as "rubbery" as before...
I think I am going to return it though. It seems just too large and it feels slightly more difficult to unlock with the fingerprint reader.
I will likely just go with the Ole' Bessy, shell holster case and a good screen protector.

Great pictures of both of the phones, specifically the LG v20.
I still miss my note 7, **** we were all spoiled by it haha.
Anywho, I got the LG V20 and have been going through cases left and right trying to decide which one to put on. I stopped on the VRS design with kick stand. However, it is kinda slippery and I do not like that. Additionally, I am still trying to find a screen protector (preferably tempered glass one), but the ones I installed do not adhere to the very bottom and very top. I do not know why, but probably due to slight curvature of the screen.
I have the Poetic Case with the built in screen protector, and it really reminds me of the otter box but like 3 times cheaper . However, the other box seems nicer, but just a bit bigger.
I noticed the screen proctor, has a minor gap when touching the screen. Does the otterbox have that gap as well or it fits almost as nicely as a regular screen protector would?
I have installed a wet application screen protector yesterday, it adhered nicely but I see minor bubbles a little below the center of the screen which is annoying. I am not sure if they will go away or not.

Dropping the phone

I just ordered my Phone from gearbest. SHould arrive somewhere next week.
I watched the verge hands-on video and one of their phones cracked after a single drop, not very high even. Is the ceramic back that shatterprone? It kinda scares me. I really dislike covers, hardly ever use them. I do drop my phone sometimes, but so far I have never cracked a screen in 10y of smartphone use. I wonder if I'll have to invest in a cover for this phone or not.
my mix 2 arrived 2 days ago, and i must say that it is REALLY slippery, althought i won't be using any covers ( i hate them ) i'll just be extra careful when holding it...as far as cracks are concerned, i just think it depends on the drop dynamic

You need a case. Durability of phones seems to be on the decline as screens keep getting more bezel-less plus manufacturers know that most people throw their phone in a case as soon as they get it.
Hopefully replacement backs are available soon, just in case something happens.

Yeah, but I hate cases. Buying a beautiful phone, with great design and super thin, just to put it in a fat, thick and ugly case
I guess I'll try the included case for a while. Although it's probably not very good at protecting?

Clear silicon soft cases are my solution. Relatively thin and at least offer some protection whilst still showing the phone itself. I generally order two or three different types because of fit and quality but always get a Nillkin if available.

I have always felt the same way. I appreciate good build quality and hate covering it (which even scratches backs most of the time). That being said, I am not taking any risks with this phone because while it may be the most beautiful phone I've ever owned, damaging it would be that much more painful. It's also much harder to get and fix than the Galaxies I used to not mind fixing or even replacing. The case it comes with is also very thin and pretty nice for making the camera flush. I might pop it out while I'm at work or something though.
I ended up getting a clear matte skin for the back. Adds grip and reduces fingerprints.

I dropped mine on asphalt. It landed on a corner butter side down. Came away with nary a scratch on the aluminum frame and no scratches on the screen. I still go naked lol.

Mobile outfitters. It was pricey, but overall happy with it.

Can you post a few pics? Also does it cover the sides or only the back/front?
And did you get the clear one?
