Hello all - Xiaomi Mi 5s Questions & Answers

Hi all.
I'm from italy and in next days i will receive the new XIaomi Mi 5s 3/64, my first chinaphone.
Mi 5s and Pixel have similar hardware.. then is possible use a rom from Pixel to Mi 5s?

Yes i f you install the pixel rom into the mi5s, it will be transformed into a pixel! It´s magic!

Please add [sarcasm] tags, it could be very misleading for people who don't know the modding scene.
No it's not easily possible to use a rom from a different mobile on this device. Every little hardware difference (gps module, speaker dac, microphone, display, ...) will need adjustments and they are often not possible because of closed source drivers.

Is Xiaomi Mi 5s comparable to these smartphones ???

Hey , I'm about to buy a new smartphone and I'm wondering which smartphone will be the best for 300 bucks.
So what I want is a solid build smartphone ,weight doesn't bother me .A powerful CPU and sufficient RAM for Browsing internet,Watching Youtube, Social Media(Multitasking) and playing occasionnaly some games (asphalt,..) .A good Camera I don't care about low light or recording 4K videos I just want some Good Pictures ,more details and sharpness and accurate autofocus since I will use it for social media. And a durable Battery at least one day without charging !!! ; and a loud speakers not the loudest as the Axon 7 but at least audible.
After many searches I found that the Mi 5s is the best, but I heard that some users have encountered some problems with the fingerprint scanner , 4G connectivity , and battery draining too fast, and Problems with multitasking as the phone had to reload apps everytime , I dunno if it's a problem of some units or general.
But I also found these Smartphones : Leeco Le Pro 3, Leeco Le Max 2, Zuk Z2 , Honor 8 , ASUS Zenfone 3, Meizu Pro6, Huawei Honor V8 , Xiaomi Mi 5 , Zte Nubia 11 ,..., if u know something else in this price range please tell me.
So My Priorities are Performance , Camera , Solid Build , Battery , Audio .
Please Guys , tell me which smartphone can handle my needs ? is Mi 5s better than those listed above ?
PS: My Provider 4G bands are 800/1800/1600 Mhz
Thanks in advance.
I was in the similar position as you. I looked into it and came back with the conclusion that of all the Chinese phones, it's the software which a lot of reviews said was jut not as polished as miui. Coming from a nexus stock Android user experience I was a bit worried, but I was dead wrong. I love miui, it feels very nice. Has a similar notification drawer to LG. There were complaints against the mi5 build quality, so I ended ip with the mi5s (4/32 varient due to low price).
The fingerprint reader isn't as fast and magic as my nexus 5x but it's only a small nigle (I use trusted location). Not had any issues with it and an recommending it to my friends
With future updates miui will be polished more and more no worry...

First I was going to get the oneplus t3 but it's slighty to large. I love the oneplus bcs it's as close to stock android you can come without having to flash your own custom ROMs. But since I want a phone that is 5.0-5.5" I found the Mi 5s as a possible alternative.
questions:
1. Can I easily root this phone and flash a nougat ROM so I can use google play store?
To compare I'm currently on Sprint with a rooted HTC 10 running the VENOM ROM.
2. I'm switching to T-mobile where I was planning on using this the Mi5s. I travel abroad quite a bit, does the mi5s have all the bands for international travel?
3. Anything I would miss from my current HTC 10 or oneplus 3t if I make the switch?
Thanks!!
Xiaomi Mi6 will be released this month, you can wait Mi6.

Which is better, xiaomi mi5s OR LeEco Le Pro 3 x720?

Hello
Sorry, because I don't know where to ask my question, I have to ask it here:
In terms of software support, hardware and also performance, which is better, xiaomi mi5s OR LeEco Le Pro 3 x720?
Please help me to have a better choice.
Xiaomi mi5s is way better than lepro3 in every situation except the sound quality.
i'd say mi 5s in all aspect
ive used lepro 1 that phone was a beast really
and the OS too was pretty good
but they didnt release the kernel source for that phone(global version) which make developer cant make further development
made me enough to sell it because the software development was awful
but what i can say that the hardware are better on leeco. the build are pretty solid really like a those super smartphone

Ported Firmware from Google Pixel

Hi there!
Can you tell me, if it is possible to make a ported rom with all features from Google Pixel? Afaik, our Xiaomi Mi5s (capricorn) has almost the same hardware inside.
Bump! From what I found- the only real hardware difference between Mi5s and Pixel is the lack of hardware buttons, and the fingerprint scanner (the first one is easily changable and the latter I could live without) so theoritically it should be possible to even just flash the Pixel rom on Xiaomi by just modyfying the device id to allow for the installation. At least that's how me- a noob sees it, if I'm wrong please correct me, and I hope that someone somewhere in the near future ports the Pixel rom to our cheaper alternative
I could just use a custom rom, but I don't want to sacrofice things like camera features and rom stability, not on this phone (my Mi3 served me well for 2 years with every stupid software thing I did to it, but gave up when faced the mother nature)

Android One Port from Mi A1 for Mi 5s

Hi guy's,
I love Stock Android and the current design (API and UI) of pixel smartphones - since Google has really done a lot of work with a lot of style in it.
My Generations: I came from HTC HD2 (Android, Windows Mobile, Windows Phone 7, Ubuntu Touch ect.)... next smartphone was the Galaxy S3 LTE (I flash the official Google Play Edition with a must for change the IMEI ect.), next was the HTC One M8 also converted to a GPE and my before last smarthphone was the Mi 4 LTE (with Windows Phone 10). Always the good alternative to the smartphone interested me. Now it interests me whether someone of you the bother and work dare to build this ROM (http://en.miui.com/thread-825694-1-1.html). The Nexus Experience: http://www.nxrom.us/mi5s.html
This seems to me to be somewhat too imprecise and has not the perfection that Project brings with it. Simply it is not a pureness Pixel/Nexus-feeling (the live wallpaper did not run, the Download Manager is missing, the setting menu is not 100% original etc. It lot is missing here and there) ...
I would like to help, because for me the build up of ROM's when it comes to the interface/UI and a bit around compiling the API, is an easiness for me (-
I would look forward to like-minded and teamwork. The whole thing should simply be a pleasure for the general public and be financed without money, even to learn about it :highfive:
I have a 5s with unlocked bootloader, installed Ressurection Remix 7.1.2 together with Nova Launcher (to enabled gestures) and Pixel camera port.
If you take away the amoled display og the Pixel, the Xiaomi 5s basically is a Pixel spec'ed phone for 1/3 of the price. If you want even more stock android feeling then go for LinageOS?

I really do not understand who would even buy Mi A1 which is in same price range as Mi 5s... Mi 5s have better hardware on first place, than even if you need stock rom, there is always LOS which is official for Mi 5s. I rest my case...
Guy's I mean the Pure Pixel Experience, everyone here who have a Stock Pixel with Oreo or Nougat in his hands? My friend have a Pixel, he work hard to get this phone but I do not agree to spend much money, only to own a Stock Clean Rom although it is cheaper. You can't compare the Nexus Experience Rom (I link in my last post above) and also LOS or any other ROM not with the original Pixel Rom. It must nevertheless be possible to build a Clone for the Mi 5s like the Mi 5 (see here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5/development/rom-pure-nexus-t3578407).
I will ask the developer there, if he with help of me and other users from XDA to build a clean ROM. Still thank you for giving me suggestions, I really appreciate your time!
Have a nice day -cheers
I'm using opengapps to bring pixel launcher, assistant, and whatever google facility on it, but remember that none can clone pixel exactly the same. In case you won't get unlimited original sized photo backup, only real google pixel has it.
If you want pixel like experience you can flash LOS or whatever pure aosp then flash open gapps. You can adjust which to install or remove stock los apps using gapps config, go to opengapps wiki for it.
I mean the System UI and Settings don't look or have the same features egg., example the most AOSP Rom's for Mi 5s don't have Ambient Display Settings or Reading/Night Mode. Also the Google Live Wallpaper are not working and not included in the current GApps. The Rom's missing apps, for example the wallpaperpicker.apk ect.
Okay I must build my own Pixel Experience to get nearly a perfect Copy/Clone of an Pixel /XL. But yes, I will try my best to get a better Experience Rom and share my TWRP Backup here on XDA. Included Magisk and some Kernel Tweaks. The last Time I get a big battery drain with the current Nexus Experience Rom cauz I have enabled the Fingerprint Scan-Fix for Xiaomi Mi 5s (search on XDA for it). I find out that the 4 Cores working eveytime but with the current Miui 9 Rom on Idle, two of the four Cores from SD821 sleeping and the other 2 runs with 300-500 Mhz. That's a nice Kernel Management in Idle State and I tweak it

Best phone to upgrade to from Mi5/MI5S?

I've had an MI5 for a couple years and the screen is cracked and close to dying. I was thinking of buying an MI5S as a replacement but feel like I could get a better phone as it's TOO similar to my trusty MI5 even.
My specific, additional criteria includes it being similarly sized (height/thickness) to the MI5/MI5S (to fit my mobile phone holder). After searching GSMArena, it returned around 8 phones. Most of them were cheap phones that were also released in 2016. The one exception was the original Google Pixel. The spec seems similar to the MI5/MI5S but the fingerprint scanner on the back is a deal breaker. So with that, I'd be prepared to open up the choice of phones a bit more. It must be able to run LineageOS and still be getting updates (future releases are never guaranteed, I understand). Any recommended phones (or just get the MI5S)?
I would go for the newer Mi6, because it has an optical image stabilizer like the Mi5, which the Mi5s sadly lacks.
The Mi6 also has a way faster CPU than the Mi5s. Don't forget, the Mi5s is now nearly 2 years old.
Indeed, price difference is minimal, so go with better options like the Mi6. Mi Note 3 and Mi Mix 2 are also friendly priced recently.
Thanks for the suggestions so far. I didn't consider the Mi6 and a few other Xiaomi phones becasuse I was using an old GSMarena saved search where I specified band 28 had to be in the phone, but I don't actually need that band now.
Aaargh, the Mi6 (and upcoming 6X), Mi Note 3 and Mi Mix 2 all don’t have headphone jacks (the headphone adapters aren’t going to cut it)! Curse you Apple. We knew it was coming, I guess. They’re all a similar size to my old phone at least and fit the phone holder as well.
Mi Mix 2 looks like it will get updated for some time but that's starting to get heavy (185 g/6.53 oz) too:
https://www.lineageosrom.com/2018/01/xiaomi-devises-getting-android-p.html
The Nokia 8 actually looks very good value with same CPU as the Mi Mix 2 (and similar weight) but with the headphone jack, but the Lineage devs are waiting on the bootloader to be unlockable for that.
I think I’ll have to wait. At least I have a better idea of what I’m looking for. Would be nice if the stats.lineageos.org site showed the newer phones’ popularity/trend in another table.
Mm, you have a point there. The Mi Note 2 or the original Mi Mix maybe? The upcoming Redmi Note 5 (with the SD636) is also promising to be a good deal. Otherwise some Nubia (Z17 lite for instance) and maybe even LeTV phones with a custom ROM might be worth a look (although I'm not sure about the build quality from LeTV). Just check the XDA thread of the device beforehand and always stick to Qualcomm processors as Mediatek gives crap support to both producers and ROM developers.

Thanks for those. Mi Note 2 and orignial Mi Mix are a bit old (hey, one of the earlier posts has made me only look at 2017 or later phones). The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro phone is a bit heavy at around 180gm (my 64gb Mi5 is 129gb).
The LeTv/LeEco phnoe have two, more-recent releases that look reasonable but from those the LeEco Le Pro3 Elite has the same chipset as my Mi5 and the LeEco Le Pro 3 AI Edition has a Mediatek chipset (taking your advice on ruling out phones with those).
The Zubia Z17 lite looks a decent option (168gms is getting up there is weight) but just saw its finger print scanner is rear-mounted too.
Will keep looking!
On the 24. April Xiaomi will present the new Mi 6X. Details so far unknown, but will probably be the successor of the Mi 6.

No separate 3.5mm/headphone jack. Looks nice though. I refuse to get wireless earphones or use any dongle. I bought some nice wired earphones not too long ago.
Sounds like the Mi7 might be out sometime this year too (but, again, probably won't have a 3.5mm/headphone jack).
