Camera causes photo to freeze - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've flashed a bunch of ROMS and they all have the same issue. After a couple weeks, when I take pictures (especially with flash) the camera freezes and I need to remove the battery. Once it starts doing it, it usually keeps doing it for a few hours. Charging the battery to 100% seems to stop it from doing this. Has anyone else seen this? It makes me want to smash my phone.

i also have this issue. keeping the battery at 100% does not seem to help any. My issue is only with the Samsung camera app. A 3rd party camera app does not cause the problem, so I just switched to open camera.

Go to settings/application manager/system apps/ and find stock camera app open and clear cache and clear data reboot device.hope that helps.

that is the first thing I tried and on multiple roads, it did nothing.

GNex just went crazy. Any clue?

So a couple of days ago, my Nexus was just fine. Smooth as butter..then i decided to charge it overnight as usual(the phone was not turned off). next day, i pick the device..everything is normal. Couple of hours later, out of NOWHERE, strange things begin to occur. Some apps coudn't load properly(the would open, but kept loading forever), none of my videos would play(they keep loading, won't start), even using different players, the camera would not load, black screen and nothing when i open the app..tried other camera apps as well, same thing happens with the gallery..
i mean, i don't recall doing anything different. My phone is rooted with CNA, never experienced anything like this before.
i already did wipe data/factory reset, wiped cache, etc. tried several other Roms as well..it remains the same.
it just boggles my mind what may be causing this "behavior", It was really out of nowhere.
---------
ok, so after further observation, the thing with the videos is that i can't play them using any kind of hardware decoding..they still play( choppy) with soft decoding
a hardware malfunction maybe?
unbeliavable..
Could be a bad battery.

Unfortunately i don't have an extra battery at hand
Last night tried the following:
1 - Factory reset/wipe data
2- Reflash the stock rom, relocked bootloader
Put the phone literally back to the way i got him, and STILL have the same issues!!!! It's just so weird, some apps are normal, others crash every single time, black screen on camera app, gallery opens but sometimes show pics, and others just keep loading and eventually crashes, can't play videos with HW decoding(manage to play fine twice but i have no idea how).
Again, it just happened out of nowhere! The thing is unusable at this point, just unbelievable!!!!
I'm willing to bet you it's definitely a bad battery

Nexus 7 2013 Becoming Slow.

Hey,
I got my N7, 16GB WiFi, 1½ month(s) ago, and it was amazing. I was playing games, like Modern Combat 4, at a super smooth frame rate, I was browsing the web at amazings FPS's, just the general UI was so fluid.
The day I got it, I unlocked, flashed a recovery and rooted. I play the game I mentioned above, MC4, a lot and am quite good at it. I though that it would be a good idea to record what I was doing and show the world! (www.youtube.com/user/StealthGamingAndroid if you want to see)
The game was smooth before, just playing, and was still smooth after. What impressed me was that even while recording, it felt like I still had amazing frames.
About a week or so ago, that stopped. I was getting lag, the game was jittery and making the whole thing unplayable, even when not recording. But it wasn't just the game. The whole UI felt, even though it wasn't terrible, sluggish.
I didn't/haven't changed my setup, regarding ROM, Kernel or Processor Speeds since the day I got it. It is running the version of 4.3 it came with out of the box. (My choosing to keep it on that and not update)
The only things I have done regarding root have been using SCR Pro, the recording software, and using Xposed and Gravitybox.
I do not know what is causing this sudden lag, and how I can fix it. A brief search on Google didn't turn up anything that I could relate to. So I present to you my question.
How do I fix this lag?
I do not mind if it means using root, flashing a new ROM or even a new kernel. (Never flashed a different kernel on all 4 of my devices) Over clocking I also haven't done, but if it means removing the lag, I will consider it.
I am extremely grateful for what ever solutions or suggestions you give me, and will happily look into them.
Thank you for your time reading this, and for helping a confused user out.
Faithfully,
-R
Boot into recovery, clear you caches, boot normally, see if that fixed it, if not...boot into safe mode and see if the problem persists, if that fixed it, it's one or more of your apps, you'll have to either flash to stock and reinstall one at a time, when it starts lagging again you've found the app, or remove one at a time and see when it stops, if the problem still occurs in safe mode, backup and flash back to stock and see if it persist, if it does, maybe it's hardware.

That has fixed some of it, but it still feels choppy. (The wiping of the caches, I mean)

I use an app called Clean Maste. You can get it in the Play Store. It's basically like CC Cleaner on the computer (if you don't have it, get it!). Just clear all the stuff in the junk option EXCEPT obsolete APKs. If you know what you're doing, cleaning in Junk Advanced can help too.
Also, be sure to delete all the apps you don't need, and clear your multitasking often.
For a big performance boost. you can overclock your tablet. First, tell us if the other things work above. If not, PM me and I'll be glad to teach you to overclock

Did you try uninstalling Xposed?
When my tablet lags a little, I usually turn it completely off for a couple minutes. This helps me quite a bit.
This may sound dumb or crazy but you got to remember that it's a computer and turning it off once or twice a week will clear the cobwebs.

[Q] Camera crashes

Heya!
Anyone having some camera issues since the 4.4 Update?
Mine crashes and/or freezes randomly when taking photos with the software and hardware buttons. Sometimes the whole phone freezes and won't respond on any touch input. Sometimes lock and unlock it again helps but most times I have to wait a few seconds or use the "OFF"-Buttons.
Any fix for this?

Do a factory reset. I had the exact same issue when I upgraded and I had to do this a few times to get everything working.

Gosh, that sucks :/ Is it at least good to make a backup with the Sony app and then restore it or will this end up with the same error again?

You can try but I usually recommend just starting fresh since it could cause some errors.

if u want better chance not to see these kindda issue u must repair ur firmware by PCC.
factory reset means wiping firmware
but repair by PCC means install fresh firmware
:good:
I've got the same issue. It's actually worst when using SnapChat. It just freezes sometimes. I did a factory reset from the phone and this solved the issues for a day, but now it's back. I'm gonna do a full reset from the computer now and see if this solves it.
I have the same problem with the camera!! Anyone fixed this problem without factory reset?

And it's back. Camera often freezes the whole phone. When I listen to music, and starts snapchat and change from back to front camera, the whole phone freeze and the music stops for almost ten seconds.
Same here, 14.3.A.0.681. Did anyone found a fix?
The camera app opens and works, but at the moment to focus it just stuck on focusing and the photo is never taken.
I experience the same issue. Often, I have to wait for the camera to open, and SnapChat is unusable now. Don't really feel like resetting if people here are reporting that it doesn't fix the issues.
Same issue here. But on 785 (4.4, latest update, german TFT, unlocked BL and root). Camera hangs on every occassion, doesn't make a difference which capture method I use. Tried emptying cache and data for the camera app but that didn't solve anything. I don't want to reinstall my phone because it's a pain in the ass. Problem does not occur with the front camera.
I did find a fix!!!:
Just clear data&cache of the camera app and snapchat (just need to log in again). Now everything works smooth and quick again.
@madlive: weird, for me clearing data&cache fixed all my problems. Maybe try it again?

Having just sold my Z1 (after having .757 installed) and now using a 'spare' Z1 Compact until my Z2 arrives, I wasn't that surprised to notice that the Z1 Compact has exactly the same problems as the Z1.
Wiping, resetting, clearing the cache - all pointless in the long run. Any fix is coincidental. It's a bug that hasn't been completely fixed with .757. The mere fact I've had the same problems on both handsets shows it's the firmware.
If you unlock the phone and start up the camera via the icon, chances are it will work fine.
If you activate the camera from standby, it may fail (the freezing problem, or 'camera not available' error).
What .757 seems to have fixed is the issue where the phone starts to get red hot and then you get the warning that it's too hot to use the camera. I've been taking a lot of photos this last weekend and never had that happen, so at least Sony fixed one thing. I suspect that was down to a series of problems with the media server and creating thumbnails etc, all of which were fixed.
When you have the freezing problem, was the phone locked? In other words; was it locked, but you started the camera via the camera key or dragging up the camera icon? When you tapped power to turn off/on, did you then have to unlock again? If you subsequently unlock - does the camera work fine now?
My hunch is that this is where the problem lies. I've got pattern unlock and now have it set to not lock for 30 minutes. So if I'm taking photos, I unlock the phone and - touch wood - I have no camera issues for that time.
If the phone has locked itself later on, and I don't unlock first, I expect the camera to fail. Yet it doesn't always - but once is still too much. I missed a potentially awesome photo of my two year old son because of this - and it's bloody frustrating. Especially as there's no idea on when we might get another update.
Another problem I noticed on the first KitKat release was the on-screen keyboard appearing over the camera one time. I'd been using the keyboard in another app before firing up the camera using the button, so the camera fault must be down to how it sets itself up when launched - and what you were doing just before (unlock screen, another app) influences the likelihood of it crashing.
In any case, it's a pain.
But on the plus side, the quality of the photos I got over the weekend - mostly in manual landscape mode - are stunning. The phone is capturing a level of detail that is exceptional now. And auto mode is now generally pretty good too, suggesting it doesn't just bump up the ISO all the time.
Same bug here!

I'm having the same problem here. Does Sony is aware of this bug?
Does anyone know of a link where we can complain about it to the manufacturer?
I thought that something was wrong/broken with my phone, but then, after seeing your posts, it isn't... So no factory reset... Just wait for an update? even 3rd party apps seem to crash, expecially the google camera... Wth
I'm getting the same problem since the stock 4.4.2 update, battery life doesn't seem as good anymore either, but i'm always near a charger so the new Camera bugs are the most annoying.
You can't exactly "catch a moment" by whipping your camera out anymore, most of the time I'm waiting about 5-10 secs for the picture to appear ready to take a pic, especially noticeable on Snapchat or when switching from front-face to rear.
I woudn't mind but being on Stock Firmware I'm always waiting longer for Android updates, supposedly because of the extra rigorous testing etc!
bump !
it appears accessing camera from different locations (lockscreen shortcuts ...) confuses the mecanism, this added to some flashlight app and you're good to have the reboot-proof camera FC problem... pffff
Possible Fix!
*** possible fix! ***
I read this on another forum and for about 5 days now my camera has been behaving completely normal across all apps!
Little warning - for me this logged me out of some apps, and caused me to have to put some widgets back on - it almost behaved like clearing the cache when you're rooted, no data lost just a some apps liked twitter etc were acting like they were installed for the first time...
The method is to boot into safe mode once, then just power the phone off and boot as normal:
Hold down your power button
In the menu hold down the "Power Off" option and say OK to safe mode
Once you're in safe mode, turn the phone off
Turn the phone on again, it will boot as normal
Camera just now behave as normal!
Not only has it worked for me so far, but my whole phone seems a bit faster.
Good luck!
Yes have faced that issue with camera, just like my friend warned me :/ freezing, when clicking
Factory reset didn't do much good

Extreme lag with camera apps

I've seen threads about performance issues when charging etc and I have them myself!
One thing that completely destroys me is the performance when trying to take a quick picture or use an app that uses the camera.
E.g. barcode scanners move the complete opposite direction
Snapchat is also practically unusable. When I open it, it completely s**ts itself every time and is unusual!
I guess my question is..... Do you think custom ROMs and recoveries will solve the issues?
Thanks

I definitely think we should see some optimizations in the next weeks. Snapchat would crap out on me and eventually cause the camera module to crash. It got to the point that the camera would turn black within Snapchat and even within the camera app itself. Only fix was to reboot the phone to get the camera working again. Yesterday I received a snapchat update, not sure if it was meant to address performance issues, but it now works more smoothly and doesn't crash as often. There is definitely room for improvement!
It's really doing my head in and glad I'm not on my own in seeing this!! I don't know anyone else with the 5x to compare so been searching online.
I timed it today, I rebooted the phone and left it 5 minutes without opening anything. I fired up the camera app and it took 124 seconds (just over 2min) until the app was ready to take a photo (the blue circle showing around the shutter button). Then tapping the button to take a photo took a further minute to take the actual photo. Then the phone was that sluggish it needed a reboot.
Not sure if it's the hardware, the os or the app but I've tried Open Camera too and that seems to be really really slow. And, as the OP says, Snapchat totally craps out as do other apps that use the camera.

I just tried the same test. The camera app opened and was ready to shoot (blue circle showing) in about 2 seconds. Double pressing the power button to open the camera app had the blue circle around the shutter button showing right away
Every now and then it does work perfectly. But more times than not there is a massive lag. Usually after the phone has been on for half a day, but like this morning sometimes when it's just turned on.
I've experienced the same issues mentioned by you guys, especially in the OP.
Snapchat has practically been completely unusable until the most recent update, and that only marginally improved things. The root cause seems to be the camera itself, as I'm only seeing this type of lag in apps that access the camera. I can't help but imagine Google is working on a fix for this in the very near future, just one of those 'early adopter' issues I guess. It has caused me to do daily reboots just about, which is very aggravating because that defeats the purpose of a good camera if you miss the moment you're trying to capture. As I'm sure you guys have noticed, when the camera app actually works properly, the pictures are pretty impressive, which makes it all the more aggravating that it can't be used as fluently as designed.
Hoping for all of our sake that Google fixes this soon.
I'm in the same boat.

G4 stuttering and running hot

I'm not sure if anyone has experienced their G4 running hot and stuttering a lot. Mine was yesterday and I couldn't figure out why. It would just freeze for like five seconds about every 15-20 seconds. Even my music that I was listening to and had downloaded would skip with the screen off.
I'm on stock MM and I have installed apps from third parties but nothing too crazy. I tried to figure out and pinpoint maybe an app that I had downloaded that was causing it.
I finally decided to factory reset it. I have to tell you that after setting my phone back up, it runs better than it ever has. Apps open super quick. I also decided to wipe both internal and external memory just to be on the safe side.
Again, I don't know what was causing it, but I'm definitely going to be more conservative and cautious installing any third party apps.

You should downgrade to LL and root your phone. Then you can tweak it to run buttery smooth and increase your battery life too.
