Hey,
I got my N7, 16GB WiFi, 1½ month(s) ago, and it was amazing. I was playing games, like Modern Combat 4, at a super smooth frame rate, I was browsing the web at amazings FPS's, just the general UI was so fluid.
The day I got it, I unlocked, flashed a recovery and rooted. I play the game I mentioned above, MC4, a lot and am quite good at it. I though that it would be a good idea to record what I was doing and show the world! (www.youtube.com/user/StealthGamingAndroid if you want to see)
The game was smooth before, just playing, and was still smooth after. What impressed me was that even while recording, it felt like I still had amazing frames.
About a week or so ago, that stopped. I was getting lag, the game was jittery and making the whole thing unplayable, even when not recording. But it wasn't just the game. The whole UI felt, even though it wasn't terrible, sluggish.
I didn't/haven't changed my setup, regarding ROM, Kernel or Processor Speeds since the day I got it. It is running the version of 4.3 it came with out of the box. (My choosing to keep it on that and not update)
The only things I have done regarding root have been using SCR Pro, the recording software, and using Xposed and Gravitybox.
I do not know what is causing this sudden lag, and how I can fix it. A brief search on Google didn't turn up anything that I could relate to. So I present to you my question.
How do I fix this lag?
I do not mind if it means using root, flashing a new ROM or even a new kernel. (Never flashed a different kernel on all 4 of my devices) Over clocking I also haven't done, but if it means removing the lag, I will consider it.
I am extremely grateful for what ever solutions or suggestions you give me, and will happily look into them.
Thank you for your time reading this, and for helping a confused user out.
Faithfully,
-R
Boot into recovery, clear you caches, boot normally, see if that fixed it, if not...boot into safe mode and see if the problem persists, if that fixed it, it's one or more of your apps, you'll have to either flash to stock and reinstall one at a time, when it starts lagging again you've found the app, or remove one at a time and see when it stops, if the problem still occurs in safe mode, backup and flash back to stock and see if it persist, if it does, maybe it's hardware.

That has fixed some of it, but it still feels choppy. (The wiping of the caches, I mean)

I use an app called Clean Maste. You can get it in the Play Store. It's basically like CC Cleaner on the computer (if you don't have it, get it!). Just clear all the stuff in the junk option EXCEPT obsolete APKs. If you know what you're doing, cleaning in Junk Advanced can help too.
Also, be sure to delete all the apps you don't need, and clear your multitasking often.
For a big performance boost. you can overclock your tablet. First, tell us if the other things work above. If not, PM me and I'll be glad to teach you to overclock

Did you try uninstalling Xposed?
When my tablet lags a little, I usually turn it completely off for a couple minutes. This helps me quite a bit.
This may sound dumb or crazy but you got to remember that it's a computer and turning it off once or twice a week will clear the cobwebs.

So a couple of days ago, my Nexus was just fine. Smooth as butter..then i decided to charge it overnight as usual(the phone was not turned off). next day, i pick the device..everything is normal. Couple of hours later, out of NOWHERE, strange things begin to occur. Some apps coudn't load properly(the would open, but kept loading forever), none of my videos would play(they keep loading, won't start), even using different players, the camera would not load, black screen and nothing when i open the app..tried other camera apps as well, same thing happens with the gallery..
i mean, i don't recall doing anything different. My phone is rooted with CNA, never experienced anything like this before.
i already did wipe data/factory reset, wiped cache, etc. tried several other Roms as well..it remains the same.
it just boggles my mind what may be causing this "behavior", It was really out of nowhere.
---------
ok, so after further observation, the thing with the videos is that i can't play them using any kind of hardware decoding..they still play( choppy) with soft decoding
a hardware malfunction maybe?
unbeliavable..
Could be a bad battery.

Unfortunately i don't have an extra battery at hand
Last night tried the following:
1 - Factory reset/wipe data
2- Reflash the stock rom, relocked bootloader
Put the phone literally back to the way i got him, and STILL have the same issues!!!! It's just so weird, some apps are normal, others crash every single time, black screen on camera app, gallery opens but sometimes show pics, and others just keep loading and eventually crashes, can't play videos with HW decoding(manage to play fine twice but i have no idea how).
Again, it just happened out of nowhere! The thing is unusable at this point, just unbelievable!!!!
I'm willing to bet you it's definitely a bad battery

Hi all,
I have a n2, which I am currently running stock.
When I first bought this phone last august, it didn't lag at all.
Since then, I flashed many stock based ROMs, and mods.
I flashed back to stock a few weeks back, cos I get better data speeds on stock then on revolution HD (I am guessing its something to do with the RIL as I tridd different modems).
I did a full wipe, formatted everything, ran fore ever gone to clean the SD card, and flashed the latest stock thru Odin.
I have deleted all the unnecessary system apps, disabled sync, power saving mode, Bluetooth, NFC, and most other things.
I only have 78 apps installed, and I have disabled root.
I have a 64gb SD card inserted, with movies, etc.
I am getting really horrible lags, like when I scroll a web page, it is not at all smooth, it just jumps and jitters.
Its like that in most apps, animations are not smooth, when I type, the keyboard lags, its just really horrible.
I have full wiped and flashed stock 3 times now, it even lags on stock based custom ROMs.
I don't want to use cm, as I need some of the Samsung apps.
Does anyone know how to fix this?, as my warranty is with kogan, so if I send it in, I will be stuck with my 8x for a few weeks.
Thanks in advance
Cheers
Corey

Maybe some app(s) you installed put some heavy strain on the cpu. Install Betterbatterystatts and cpu spy for app behaviour.
do you also get lags when you have flashed a new rom without installing any user apps, i mean only stock apps? Have you tested to force gpu-rendering?
Otherwise your device could be damaged...

Hi,
I tried installing them, and all the behavior waa normal, so i am beggining to think it might be a hardware problem (maybe from too much over clocking ).

Hi,
Yes it lags even then, with only stock apps.
I tried force GPU rendering the other day, as well as disabling animations, but it didn't fix anything.
I rang kogan today, and they said I could send it in for warranty, but it would take up to 21 days
So I am still trying to get the courage to depart with my main android device (my other android devices are also at service centers being repaired ).
As I will be stuck with a wp8 HTC 8x ( a not quite as **** as i**** device ) for 3 weeks if I send it in .
Thanks for your help.
Cheers

I have over 200 apps installed, full sync and undervolted -100mV all freqs and i suffer absolutely no lag. So i wonder what is causing yours? Running ARHD 15.0 with stock kernel.
check if you are on energy saving mode! that makes its slow!
Sometimes when I launch Super Hexagon, the game runs terribly slow. It feels like it's running at 15-20 FPS instead of 60 FPS. The weird part is that this lag persists after I exit the game. The whole system becomes super slow with choppy animations.
I've tried killing the app and even clearing the data, but the only thing that seems to fix this is a reboot. I can reproduce this behavior after rebooting again. It usually happens on the 2nd or 3rd time I launch the app, but sometimes it can take up to 10 times of closing and launching. Holding the tablet vertically seems to trigger it faster (although I'm not completely sure if it's related yet).
I'm running completely stock KOT49H and version 1.0.5 of Super Hexagon.
I haven't been able to reproduce this on my Nexus 4 or my old Nexus 7 (2012).
Can anyone else confirm that this happens on their Nexus 7 (2013)? I'm just wondering if it's a bug/compatibility issue or if it's a problem with my device
Just a quick update: Tried changing to ART with and flashing the latest franco kernel (just to experiment), and it still happens in the exact same way

I know this is a late response but I had the same thing happen to me twice tonight and I found your thread while googling for the issue myself.
Force closing the app doesn't help. It seems I have to reboot to fix it.
Have you by any chance figured out a fix? I'm running a 2013 n7 completely stock

Haven't found a fix yet
It's clearly a software issue though, either with the game or the latest N7 2013 build. Maybe someone who's more skilled could check the debug log (or something) to figure out the cause.
Hey
EDIT:
to fix this problem, open your favorite file explorer..
navigate through android/data/(superhexagon package file name)
go to settings.dat
change vsync from 1 to 0

I confirm, the only solution is to reboot... Very annoying if it happens while you break a record
Wow, I am astonished by Google. It has been over a year now and this problem STILL exists, I am having the exact same problem as described in the OP with several apps. How come this problem gets so little attention? Should be well known by now.
All those fancy design changes but who cares about actual system stability.
^What apps? I've never had this problem and this is my first time reading about it.
It's up to the app developer to keep their **** updated to work well with new versions of android. Nothing to do with google.

No way apps are supposed or even able to mess with the whole system like that and this bug doesn't happen on other devices like nexus 5 with the same apps so it's obviously just the device. I mean did you even read the thread you ignorant prick? The thread creator said too that he can't reproduce it with other devices such as Nexus 4 or Nexus 7 2012.
A few hours after flashing the factory image, my 5x has been scrolling really choppily, it's not as noticeable when I fling the scrolling ( take my finger off the screen after flinging the scrolling direction) but it's extremely noticeable when I'm scrolling while keeping my finger on the screen. I'm not quite sure if this choppiness only affects scrolling, it could possibly be a frame cap, but I haven't really noticed any lag or choppiness when opening apps. I think this could also be due to the system optimizating the apps in the background since android system and Android OS have pretty high battery usage percentages, and I've been having worse battery life than I had when my 5x was on marshmallow. The phone gets woken up a lot when it's idle. I've reflashed the factory image again and once again for the first few hours the phone is fine and then after that the scrolling choppiness returns and the Android system and Android OS battery drain too. I'll probably roll back to marshmallow if these problems don't get better in a few days after the system is done optimizating the apps in the background. I just wanted to know if anyone else has been having these issues and if anyone has a way to make the scrolling smooth again (once again the scrolling is smooth for a few seconds after rebooting and then the choppiness comes back once again) thanks in advance.
I'm getting same issues Im most likely going back to MM until next Nougat revision is issued

Yea, I also went back to marshmallow because I couldn't stand the scrolling choppiness and the battery life issues. I really did want to wait a few days to see if it made a difference but it felt like the choppiness wasn't just affecting the scrolling it felt like the phone was being frame capped. And the battery life just seemed to get worse and worse so the problems didn't seem to flatten themselves out. However I did read some posts on reddit that suggested the problems being caused webview being integrated into only chrome instead of being a standalone app; the post suggested uninstalling chrome and updating webview. For me it didn't really help with the battery issues and scrolling issues but others can try and see it helps with their phones.
Why are you reflashing the stock image? Try factory resetting or format data/cache in recovery, then just take the OTA.

I reflashed the stock image via the flash-all.bat file so it wipe the entire phone including the data and cache partitions. But even after that the scrolling choppiness and battery issues come back after a few hours.

I'm wondering if the stock image or the flashing process is the issue. I would try reverting back to MM and take the Nougat OTA update, and then format data/cache.
I dont get this issues.
But ive installed tupiac4u Custom Rom.
new on N5x, bought the day 7.1.1 came out.
I never tried 6.0 but 7.1.1 (only thing I tried, why downgrade?) is far from being smooth
I'm trying kernels, roms, aosp, cm, stock based, anyhting I do doesn't help. it's not smooth
I have 3 friends with unrooted phone, who just updated to 7.1.1 through OTA and is smooth as should be....curious....
well, I tried 6.0 and is not any good
updated to 7.1.1...not solved
done again factory reset with flash-all.bat to 7.1.1 and is still not perfect...
I tried a friend's unit, is damn smooth, really, 60fps always, scrolling is so good...
I really don't know how to solve this. custom kernels are faster but not smoother....
wish I could get it replaced

Definitely get it replaced, sounds like bunk hardware. Maybe a faulty CPU/GPU.

I can't...what should I say? the device works, everything run fine. no hardware fault...just a unfortunate unit, but is not enough to get it replaced
I just was having all these issues and Google is replacing my phone after going through all the troubleshooting with them.
If you guys go to the sound menu in the actual settings menu, does your volume jump around at all? I discovered this on the phone and I'm wondering if this is some weird issue separate form these problems or part of a bigger problem with this image.
I'm not sure if anyone has experienced their G4 running hot and stuttering a lot. Mine was yesterday and I couldn't figure out why. It would just freeze for like five seconds about every 15-20 seconds. Even my music that I was listening to and had downloaded would skip with the screen off.
I'm on stock MM and I have installed apps from third parties but nothing too crazy. I tried to figure out and pinpoint maybe an app that I had downloaded that was causing it.
I finally decided to factory reset it. I have to tell you that after setting my phone back up, it runs better than it ever has. Apps open super quick. I also decided to wipe both internal and external memory just to be on the safe side.
Again, I don't know what was causing it, but I'm definitely going to be more conservative and cautious installing any third party apps.

You should downgrade to LL and root your phone. Then you can tweak it to run buttery smooth and increase your battery life too.
