im thinking of switching to linux full time but the one thing stopping me is the ability to flash stock rom if something goes wrong.
is there a app to make the lg flash tool work in linux.
You can always install Windows on VirtualBox for your needs.
Cool thanks ill check it out.

Ok, so I'm new to these forums, and to Android, and to Mac...
I used the unrEVOked method last night to root my Evo and try to put CM6 on there. Rom Manager didn't work, and I've been trying to find a tutorial vid or something for Mac OS ever since. A friend of mine walked me through it, and we had the files ready to be applied to the root (CM6, GApps hdpi). When I tried to drag and drop, CM6 kept separating into 3 different places. The boot.img would stay outside of a folder. The META-INF and system would separate into 2 folders, and would stay that way, preventing me from flashing the rom, ect. I would prefer to stay within Mac OS to get this done, but I also have a Dell distro of XP laying around, and I'm willing to run Boot Camp on my precious Mac if necessary.
Help?
Are you putting the zip files on the root of your card? That's all you do on a mac when you want to flash a rom. If your using safari, it likes to unzip zip files when you download them so be careful with that. I use chrome and it doesn't have that problem.

If you used unrevoked you'll also need to flash eng hboot fix for cm. There's a whole thread on it in the dev forums

So try again with Chrome... I'll try that
The 2 posts above your last one give good advice.
If you use leopard then retrieve the cm ROM zip file from trash after you download it. It will be automatically unzipped from safari after download. You can't flash the unzipped files. The zipped file retrieved from trash is what you want.
BUT first, you do need the ENG-hboot file as stated above.
Just re-iterating that it can be done and the advice given above is accurate.
In snow leopard you can tell safari to not unzip files after download. I think via preferences. I forget right now.
I use a mac.
I'd like to thank all three of you for your help with flashing over CM6. I ended up skipping the Mac altogether, and flashed the hboot fix via Astro. After I did that, I installed CM6 and the Google Apps by applying them to the root via Astro again. Had a bit of a boot loop problem, then fixed it and got everything in working order.
However, this will be useful for future roms and flashing purposes. Thanks for helping.
I have searched a lot.
But looks like heimdall will not work for S3 sprint edition.
I just need to install CWM so that I can install custom zip files

Guide helps you build the latest RC of Heimdall (1.4 RC1) that will work on our Sprint SGS3 phones to put on Custom recovery and so forth (in place of using the Windows Odin) --> http://en.samaanet.com/?p=9279
It requires some package installation, and I had to fiddle with it a bit. But it _does_ work if you get the Heimdall 1.4RC1 built (I just used it instead of the script after things got built and installed) Needs QT and a few other libs, that may fail to install on their own..
Fun times ! Keep on Flashing..
If you have issues, keep after me and I'll do a write up of a step-by-step. But this is what I have in my hip pocket at the moment, and it did work for me
I mistakenly bought mobile odin pro thinking it was like CWM/TWRP. But it looks like it only supports some obscure .tar format that rom authors dont even use, which makes it about useless. So, what is this program even for? Most if not all roms are in zip format, not tar. So why would anybody use mobile odin?
It can be used to 'Odin' a recovery image such as TWRP or CWM, and flash stock firmware files that are in .tar format (just remove the .md5 at the end of a download I think, it might work with .tar.md5, not sure since I've used it only once or twice).

So it's a recovery meant to install other recoveries? Whats the point in that? You can install CWM/TWRP without mobile odin on any rooted S4
It's not a recovery. Have you ever used Odin on a computer to flash a ROM, radio/modem, recovery, etc to your phone? This is just an on-device version of that. It doesn't require a PC and USB cable to use - a big plus if you need/want to flash something and you don't have a PC and/or USB cable handy. Another big plus is it does not increase your flash counter. You can find more info about it in its official thread, here.
But it only flashes tar files, and most roms come in zip, right? I understand the whole flash counter thing, but what good is it besides flashing back to stock roms or something since the vast majority of roms arent even compatible with this thing?

As far as I can tell, the Pro version supports most zip files as well.

Hmm, I was too scared to try since every forum post mentions tar files. But a full blown recovery like CWP lets me perform nandroid backups right? I cant backup anything in Odin mobile can I? This also lets me restore nandroids in the event something goes horrible wrong

Correct, recovery is the best(only?) way to perform nandroid backup/restores. And for most people, recovery is probably the preferred method of flashing since it has more flexibility. Mobile Odin would probably only come in handy a few times - at least that I can think of for myself. I have it installed but I've yet to use it.
Odin and Recovery are two very different things for doing very different tasks.
They are not the same.
If you own any Samsung device, you should read up on Odin and what it does. It is a VERY useful tool.

This is about the full PC versiono of Odin. It will help explain what it is.
Think it's kind of shaky myself used it once to flash a modem and it soft bricked stuck at boot screen. Had to system restore. Still have it on my phone but have lost a little trust in it since that happened.

seeing that your having trouble understanding what odin is for, i suggest that you uninstall it, take it as a loss, and never use it, just to prevent brickings.
though if you read up on it, its a very useful tool for those that dont have computers or arent at a computer 24/7. worth every cent i paid for it, though i use it to flash modems 90% of the time, since ive had bad experiences with modems in .zip format
I'm in a sticky situation.
I was sick and tired of having a 26% Android System usage on I747UCUFNE4 and decided to try a likewise s5 rom.
I downloaded the file and put it on my external SD card. I've done this many times with many ROMs.
It can't open up the ROM file, and I have no backups.
My computer is sort of old and it won't recognize SD cards, and I can't boot to download a new ROM. I basically only have Odin, and am on the I747UCUFNE4 bootloader/modem. How can I fix this?
If it couldn't flash the ROM, you should be able to boot back into whatever you were using before.
Unless you manually formatted /system first. (I really hope you didn't). But if you did you will have to find a computer you can copy to the SD with. There's no other way I can see unless you have another phone you can download on.

I did format /system...and i couldn't boot back into anything after trying to switch ROMs. My phone has nothing in the /sdcard folder, only /cwm and I think I need a system dump or something, but I'm not familiar with that. Also my CSC(?) is missing as well apparently according to my computer.
Sounds like you're not going anywhere until you can find a way to plug your micro-sd into your computer. I recommend something like this: http://www.adafruit.com/products/93...-nh4xqn1xcUBK_0sF0M6TNJbFgNCI4FH9waAjD98P8HAQ
The micro-sd slots into the back and it plugs into your usb port (I assume your computer can't be old enough that it doesn't have USB). Alternatively, your local Best Buy should have something like this:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/insigni...9&skuId=3602009&st=micro sd reader&cp=1&lp=15
Your other choice is to use Odin to flash a stock rom back to your device: http://www.technobezz.com/flash-stock-rom-via-odin-samsung-galaxy-s3/
Then, once you have a working OS/phone, just put CWMR back on and flash your favorite rom again.
Can he not push the file with adb?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 running TMS3KK-2.0
Adb could work if he has an insecure kernel.
However, @Jakeuten, I think I just figured a way out! I was thinking Odin was no good since you are on NE4 and there's no firmware for that. But, it is OK to flash older ROMs.
Go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2789917
Download the 4.3 stock tar file in Step 4.
Flash in Odin.
That should only contain the system and kernel, just like a regular stock ROM you'd flash in recovery. The only difference is you can flash this from Odin.
Hopefully that'll get you back to where you can use your device and can then flash whatever you want from there. (Just don't wipe system before flashing again! Ever!)
I hope that helps! Let us know!

So I was getting tired of the rom I was on and decided to switch. I am using the BUMP'd twrp by the way. I did something really stupid. I restored the stock rooted rom while searching. Apparently it auto updated. I can now no longer get past twrp recovery no matter what i do, restore, reinstall, wipe everthing. If someone can link me to a guide using adb to flash a stock iso or something? Please help this is my everyday device.
Rule one to flashing: never flash without a backup. It sounds like something went wrong but if you can actually get into TWRP you should be able to flash either an older backup (easiest) or wipe and reinstall your current ROM. If youre wanting to go to marshmallow anyway (And as someone that has used their G3 from Jellybean all the way through to marshmallow, I cant recommend it enough), see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/stock-d855-30b-images-kdz-flashables-t3282012
Autoprime was nice enough to pack it into 3 seperate flashable zips. Follow those instructions TO THE LETTER.
IF you can't get into TWRP for whatever reason google "D855 6.0 marshmallow official update" and find something that shows you how to do it with the official flash tool supplied by LG. Can't link it cos im not sure if im allowed to link to outside websites here.

not only did i use backups i een tried to install a new rom. nothing worked. thats why i was trying to get a tutorial on what to do from here.
