[Q] Problem applying CM6 via Mac - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I'm new to these forums, and to Android, and to Mac...
I used the unrEVOked method last night to root my Evo and try to put CM6 on there. Rom Manager didn't work, and I've been trying to find a tutorial vid or something for Mac OS ever since. A friend of mine walked me through it, and we had the files ready to be applied to the root (CM6, GApps hdpi). When I tried to drag and drop, CM6 kept separating into 3 different places. The boot.img would stay outside of a folder. The META-INF and system would separate into 2 folders, and would stay that way, preventing me from flashing the rom, ect. I would prefer to stay within Mac OS to get this done, but I also have a Dell distro of XP laying around, and I'm willing to run Boot Camp on my precious Mac if necessary.
Help?

Are you putting the zip files on the root of your card? That's all you do on a mac when you want to flash a rom. If your using safari, it likes to unzip zip files when you download them so be careful with that. I use chrome and it doesn't have that problem.

If you used unrevoked you'll also need to flash eng hboot fix for cm. There's a whole thread on it in the dev forums
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

So try again with Chrome... I'll try that

The 2 posts above your last one give good advice.
If you use leopard then retrieve the cm ROM zip file from trash after you download it. It will be automatically unzipped from safari after download. You can't flash the unzipped files. The zipped file retrieved from trash is what you want.
BUT first, you do need the ENG-hboot file as stated above.
Just re-iterating that it can be done and the advice given above is accurate.
In snow leopard you can tell safari to not unzip files after download. I think via preferences. I forget right now.
I use a mac.

I'd like to thank all three of you for your help with flashing over CM6. I ended up skipping the Mac altogether, and flashed the hboot fix via Astro. After I did that, I installed CM6 and the Google Apps by applying them to the root via Astro again. Had a bit of a boot loop problem, then fixed it and got everything in working order.
However, this will be useful for future roms and flashing purposes. Thanks for helping.

Help with wiping/rooting.

Okay, so I'm really close to being able to do this. I just need someone to explain to me the mental block I'm having.
I'll X-post something from another thread, based on the research and reading I've done:
I am currently running the OTA 2.1 from HTC.
I want: The new rooted Froyo build.
So, steps I need to take to make this happen:
1. Backup my phone.
2. Wipe.
3. Root my phone using simpleroot
4. Reboot.
5. Flash using the file that's listed on page one of this topic, correct?
6. Reboot.
7. Flash the radio with provided file.
8. Reboot.
9. Flash the WIMAX with the provided file.
10. Reboot.
What's confusing me: How do I go from a wiped phone with no data on it to rooted via Simpleroot? Is the wipe required for Simpleroot to work, or does Simpleroot automatically give me the option to wipe while it's rooting? If I DO wipe my phone, do I use the stock installer 136img to boot my phone to the standard HTC sense screen and then root from there, or do I use Simpleroot while my phone is sitting in the recovery shell?
I'm just confused as to where to begin the Simpleroot process while wiping my phone. So confused.
For anyone who responds.... thanks. I feel like I'm so close to having this phone on a rooted Froyo, I can taste it (ha).
Lastly, if I'm not articulating this very well, and someone would like to be the king of awesome, I'd be willing to PM them my number and hopefully it wouldn't take more than a few seconds to explain to me.
Thanks.
It's really more simple than you're making it. Wiping erases data. (full wipe essentially resets the phone back to a clean rom with no user installed apps, personal data etc...).
Follow the instructions for Simpleroot (There's even a video link I believe). When that is done you should have a ROM with root access and a custom recovery. Once finished with this process, delete or rename the PC36IMG file that's on the SD card.
To Flash the other items, radio, wimax, ROM, etc.... just reboot into recovery (vol down + pwr), Choose flash from zip and select the applicable zip file. Remember to Reboot between the Radio & Wimax installs. Flash your ROM and enjoy!
Hope this helps....

Lol. Wow. As I said, it was a simple mental block. Heading home from work to try this... Thanks.
Quick question. Do I need the pc136img file before opening simpleroot?

No. Repeat to yourself as you watch the video... "it's SimpleRoot" because it's Simple. Just follow the instructions to run the program... and click "step1, step 2 as guided by the program..." It will install / run the files needed. I think the latest version may even let you click something to erase the files which are not required going fwd... just take a look at the post and the video.
Also just a heads up if you run simple root and you get an error message to the effect that you need a certain version of microsoft's .net framework. Just google it and install. This is ONLY IF YOU GET AN ERROR WHEN TRYING TO RUN SIMPLEROOT.
Wow. Thanks so much for the quick replies. ill post here later with the results.

So, unfortunately I was away from my main PC last night, and HTC's link to the HTC Sync download was inactive, therefore I couldn't download it onto my laptop to facilitate this.
One last question... do I need the clockwork recovery mod to accomplish any of this?
kperry, thanks for your help!
I was up pretty late, but I am now running a rooted Froyo!
This community is amazing!

Please help an active member flash CW3.

I've tried and I've tried, and I've tried and I can't get the newest clockworkmod to flash so I can try to taste some gingerbread. I've looked a lot, and I've tried to use the "easy way" that's stickied at the top of this thread and I've tried to push through terminial as well but it tells me the image isn't found. So, please do not tell me to search and what not because more than half the time I do in fact search, considering I am an active member of this forum I know all about it. Idk if I'm naming the file right, or if I'm suppose to extract files from the zip or what not, but nothing seems to work. So help a brotha out, and tell me what YOU did to get it to flash with step by step, detailed if possible steps. I appreciate you taking the time to read, and possibly help. I know its annoying, but I would love you for ir

post the steps you took, perhaps someone can glean an operational error from that. my guess is you need to navigate to the proper directory or rename the file
I flashed it using terminal from phone and recovery on sd.
I have heard ppl getting issues with that image not found thing, some other files have to be copied to allow the flash_image command to work but cant remember where.
What might work,..... use rom manager to update your recovery if you havent used rom manager before. Then check where rom manager places the downloaded recovery. Then rename ur recovery v3 to the exact same name as the 2.5 and place in the relevent folder, then try to get rom manager to flash it, like tricking it.
This method was reported to work a while back.
Worth a bash?
If fail, drop me a pm, ill have a look for that flash_image binary stuff when i get home tonight pal.

Have you tried this method?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902493
The main plan I was trying to do was replace and trick rom manager into thinking it was the original but it is really 3.0. So I replace thr image and rename and flash clockwork and when I go into recovery and its a no go. Then when I try to flash it via terminal it says the image isn't found when I know it is on the root of my card. Do I need to unzip the file and take the imgage out and place it on the root of my sd card, or put the zip on my sdcard and try to flash it?(doing it via terminal). How do I need to rename the file? I've also read somewhere that I need to have the correct rom binary, is that correct? I'm running a virtuous sense rom right now. What does that mean?

I was having similar problems with flash_image, and I managed to get 3.0.0.5 on there by:
1. Flashing back to stock and starting fresh (did this with a pc10img via bootloader)
2. Rooting via the gfree -f as on the wiki
3. Downloading CW Rom Manager from the market
4. flashing the 2.x recovery that comes with that
5. Use Rom manager to download and install Cyanogen 6.1.1 clearing data and cache
6. Use flash_image instructions linked above by raitchison to install CWR 3.0.0.5.
Probably the long way around, but helped me get a grasp of what all was going on with my phone, and gave me a clean slate to start with. Haven't upgraded to CM7 yet, but now I know I can when I'm ready.
I know it doesn't help you now, but...........
Just read a tweet from koush that he is going to be releasing the CWM Recovery 3.0.0.x officially very soon, he is just waiting on cyanogen to finish running some test with it, so for people having issues with flashing CWM recovery 3.0.0.x you should see some official support from koush real soon.
It actually does help because I can wait a little more for the convicence of flashing. Thank you sir.

That requires that you have the Engineering HBOOT
I got it to work just flashing the reovery through terminal. Turns out since I was using a sense before hand, and not stock of a cm 6.1.1 I didn't have the correct binary for the rom. So I flashed cm6.x.x and then flashed the newest cw3. Its all good.

uhh.. all i had to do was change the name of the recovery.img (3.0.0) the exact same name as the one in ROM manager. reflash with rom manager and its done. Works everytime
there is also a "how to" on it. But if you know how to copy and paste when your SD card is mounted to computer its pretty simple

+1, I don't even mount to my computer though. I do it all through Astro. Easy breezy.
that does work, but the only reason it wasnt working because i didnt have the correct rom binary because i was using virtuous sense.
CWM 3.0.0.5 is now supported by ROM Mnanger, so for all the people having problems flashing the new recovery, rom manager will do it for you.

Can only flash roms in rom manager...

So, as the title says, I've had my incredible since september, I'm pretty sure its a slcd since it shipped with 2.2. I rooted it immediately with unrevoked forever, so I have soff, recovery installed, rom manager, set cpu, etc.
So I do know I'm rooted for sure, and I even can flash roms. But with a catch. I can only flash roms if they're downloaded and flashed from rom manager. I've tried downloading roms from xda or other forums. None have worked. Upon getting to the point of opening the package in cwm by applying either update.zip or choosing a specific one.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
I know that when I tried to use the name update.zip, it wasn't update.zip.zip I know I'm rooted with soff and can flash roms, only through rom manager so far, and overall I think I have a good idea of what I'm doing.
Obviously I'm screwing something up SOMEWHERE. so I know it's probably user error.
I'm on a snow leopard mac, and when I download roms I have to compress them to .zip, i know its a .zip for sure, but that could be the problem? And yes I'm putting all these .zips on the root of my sd. Cwm recognizes the.zips, just has trouble with them or something.
Here's what I do in cwm, go to apply .zip says opening package, then goes straight back to the cwm screen with all the options you get when you boot into recovery.
Any help or advice would be great!
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
Not sure if this is the problem, but when I download Roms from anywhere I don't have to compress them to a zip file, I just put them on my SD card and flash away. Have you tried simply downloading them and then flashing without compressing them?
No I've tried that before, but because its un compressed cwm doesn't like it
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
Is your SD Card in Fat32 format? I know if you aren't in FAT32 format the update.zip won't work - well it didn't for me anyway!
EDIT:
It's safari, somewhere/somehow when it unzips .zips something goes wrong. When I downloaded a rom using chrome it flashed perfectly.
So hopefully anyone who has a mac having this problem as well won't be as dumb as me >.>

[Q] new to xda; how do I flash using Rogue CWM?

Hi, I've been trying to flash my Epic 4G Touch for days now but after 2 nights without sleeping, including right now at 3:56am,
I still haven't found out how to do so. I've been searching and found a website to root and flash my recovery, I'm using Team-Rogue CWM Recovery, I used
Odin3Execution x1.81 to install my rooted EL29 stock ROM which works but I can't seem to flash no matter where I place the files on my phone.
I have another Odin that I found online called Odin3 v182 that has a lot more stuff on it like: pda, bootloader, phone, csc, etc. but I don't know what it's for.
I'm completely new at this so VERY detailed steps would be AMAZINGLY appreciated, and I could actually go to sleep...-_-...drowsy...
I would definitely follow this thread, it will make everything alot easier for you!

I am confused as well, how are you in xda under the Epic Touch and you seem to be using flashing methods from other sites. No need to be confuse everything you want is in development and look at the stickys on top and the wiki page for a breakdown of everything Epic Touch...

It seems like you are making the simple thing much complicated.
1. There are two different ways flashing the Rom. Using Rogue recovery is one and another one is using odin.
2. If you want to use the Rogue, you must place the rom zip file into your internal SD card or external. You can find out many rooted zip files from the development section.
3. Using odin also not that difficult. For this, you need to download the one-click self-extract package exe file. These files also available from the development section. Download it to your PC, execute it from PC. It will create a foler name 'odin'. Connect your phone to pc thru micro usb and put the phone into download mode (vol down + power at the same time). run the program from pc. click the vol up button to continue. If odin program from your pc shows the com port, then just click the 'start' button from pc.
Maybe it's your first time flashing the rom. So, it may looks complicated, but actually it's simple steps once you are used to these steps. So, choose the method first - zip or odin. Select the rom from development section and check the instruction for that specific rom. Just follow the instruction on the same page where the downloadable file provided.
For any more questions, please don't hesitate.
Thanks for replying

I'm sorry I just tried flashing last night and got hanged on the galaxy s2 logo, also forgot to create a nandroid, but I just reinstalled my stock EL29 with root and I'm going to try again.
Here's what I did wrong:
1.download ROM/kernel
2.move the ROM/kernel .zip file into external_sd on my phone
3.go to CWM recovery and select install zip from sd card
4.proceeded with the flash, as well as Zedomax V3 kernel flash, and got
hanged on the boot logo.
5.reinstall stock EL29 with root
6.now I'm here...lol
What do I do to prevent hanging up the phone again or even worse bricking?

I honestly having been reading into this for about a whole week straight, 7 day week, and I slept only 2 of those days because people were being vague about their instructions so I couldn't seem to even transfer the files into my external_sd card in .zip format. The files kept showing as individual files where you could enter each and every one of them but not able to use them.
I barely got it this morning, to flash, but then I got hung up on the boot and had to reinstall the EL29 stock w/root and now I'm going to try and use a different ROM and actually CLEAR the cache, davik cache, and data. Plus backup using the Nandroid in Team Rogue CWM and titanium backup.
I still don't know exactly why it got hung up though so if you know I'd be really grateful!
I'll try it this time

Currently kernel may not support the Zedomax.
Did you try odin method to apply the flash the new kernel?
(Be careful to put the right file to the right place for odin. Putting files to wrong place could be a reason of bricked phone)
One question - Is there any reason that you are trying to flash Zedomax kernel? It seems like it's quite outdated...

LOL! I thought Zedomax V3 was the latest kernel! XD haha
That just proves that I have no idea what I'm doing..
I'm actually to afraid to use odin to to the "accidental" bricking amount that's happened, from what I've read there's a lot of them.
I'm planning on doing the flash right now, just finished backing up on titanium backup, and I just transferred the ROM on my phone.
Did I place it correctly?
I connected the phone using USB mass storage and open the file explorer to view my phones files then I opened "External_SD" which was empty and placed my ROM there.

Stuck with a Mac - Can't get past splash screen, and stock recovery

As title says, i'm stuck on a Mac so as far as I know, I have no access to Odin.
I was reflashing Jellyverse, I redownloaded it on Wifi, checked MD5 and it was correct, and I did a full wipe and flashed it along with the tweaks as I had before, from Agat's newest recovery, hoping to fix some battery issues. This time for some reason, the splash screen repeats itself and then it just goes black and the recovery is stock recovery with only apply update from external storage and from ADB.
I just came back home for 2 weeks from being stationed overseas in the Air Force to my parents house, who have a Mac, so I have no access to a PC until I buy a new laptop which will probably be weeks.
I'm not dumb either, I'm familiar with modding for this phone, although it's been a few months since I've actually done anything as you can tell from my signature. I've just never been in the situation where I have no PC, didn't expect something to go wrong.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

What.
I was able to fix it by attempting heimdall, which I never used before because of the luxury of Odin, so thanks for the help anyways.
Incase anyone ever has this problem, how I fixed it was:
Downloading Agat's GB27 repack kernel from http://d-h.st/Bpu
Then I did a long process into making a new admin Mac account because I didn't know my Dad's password.
After I got into the account, I installed Heimdall 1.3.1 (they said 1.3.2 breaks for some devices, so I stuck with 1.3.1) from http://glassechidna.com and installed, rebooted.
Then I opened Terminal from Utilities, put the kernel file on my desktop, typed the following to get to my Desktop:
Code:
cd Desktop
Then the following to get un-tar the zImage from the kernel file:
Code:
tar xvf AGAT_GB27_repack.tar
Then the zImage file will unpack from the file and appear in the same directory. Then I put my phone into DOWNLOAD mode and connected it to my Mac.
Then, I typed the following to get the zImage to flash:
Code:
sudo heimdall flash --kernel zImage
After several tries WITHOUT sudo it kept saying it wasn't finding the right directory for the heimdall lib files, so it finally hit me to try the admin command sudo, so use it anyways (will ask for password.)
Then after it was done, it rebooted and I went into CWM recovery which was now Agat's repacked recovery, and I did another full wipe and installed Jellyverse 2.0 without the tweaks, and it booted up fine.
I hope this helps someone who has similar troubles, I thought I was screwed since I never did any type of modding through a Mac before.
Good info. Glad you posted back with the solution you found! Wish more would do that. That's what this whole site is really about.
Thankfully here in the E4GT forum we do have some great devs, contributors and users.
Hopefully this will help others.
