I root for two reasons: Tethering and ad blocking. I currently can't tether on my AT&T M8. Now I can't get ad blocking working. I have tried adaway and it can't apply the hosts file.
This is the same issue as with the M7. The system is writable, so it can't modify the hosts file. I tried flashing the hosts zip file manually, but that isn't working either. Anyone know of a workaround? If I can't block ads, this thing is going back. I'm starting to wonder why I even bothered unlocking my bootloader.
Update: neither Adaway or Adfree work. They randomly stop blocking ads and cause the phone to restart when you try to apply the hosts file. Adblock Plus does seem to be working well, however. I'd still prefer a hosts file method of blocking, but this seems to be the only solution without s-off.
If your rooted what about xposed framework, there is a really good ad blocking module you can download that works better than ad away etc not sure if you have to be s-off or not I was using it on my One M7, waiting to get the M8

I'm having same problem with adaway so I'm using adblock pro seems to be working ok search for it on xda
Neither will work right now because the system is protected. Kernel module is being worked on which will disable write protect, and then adblockers will work.

I think this might be the answer
As an update: I was having issues with Adblock Plus as well (it stopped working a few times and had to be force closed after completely blocking my internet connection). I finally went here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327934
And flashed the Adaway hosts through TWRP. It flashed successfully and now all is well. Tested and working all ads are blocked. Does anyone know where I could find a more updated flashable hosts file? That one was from June of last year.
Thanks.

Thanks! That looks a tad risky at this point. I will wait until it's a little more tested. I managed to flash the hosts file manually, so I'm good for now.

That one doesn't work. It was the first one I tried to flash. It fails to flash in TWRP, at least the version installed on my M8.
I am using xposed module xad and it works great. The one in the xposed app wouldnt install for some reason so downloaded the apk and installed it that way. No more ads.

Yes xposed works great. As has been posted on a few threads you have to install xposed as a zip from recovery. I googled xad apk and it was one of the first few results that came up.

Adfree seems to work fine at first, but it will cause your phone to reboot when you update it. Unless you have S-off, it will have issues sim linking the host file and writing it.

Hello,
On my h815 adaway don't block ads on xda youtube etc...
Solutions?
Umm, maybe a little more info, a screenshot, something..
Start with, did you enable it?
AdAway is working fine for me. I assume you are rooted? Have to restarted the device since installing AdAway?
I ran into the same issue on adaway 2.3 but with adaway 3.0 its working just fine
Yeah i´am rooted... I use this version, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2190753
On my previous phone (Nexus 6) don´t work too
I am using adfree now and it works Good.
adaway 3.0 is working perfectly on my rooted h812.

if you don't have something like cf. lumen (although with root it shouldn't have this issue.) you can adb it. adb install -r apknamehere.apk
you just need the apk and adb in the same folder.
Did you clear the proxy in the Access point settings (Settings => Wireless networks => More => Mobile networks => Access point names) ?
Use the adblocker in ROM Toolbox. It adds localhost redirects to your hosts file so it's much more low-level.

sorry if i'm stating the obvious, but when you installed adaway on the nexus or lg, i assume you went in to the app and clicked 'download files and apply ad blocking' or words to that effect, then reboot?

Just to dig it up again. It is working for me.
I'm digging this up as well. Adaway istalls fine, but when trying to turn it on, it fails to save hosts file. root explorer says that system folder has r/w permissions. Any suggestions?
I downloaded and flashed the OOS 3.2.0 zip once it was posted online but pulled by oneplus. I have been getting a notification for a system update for the past few days. As previously mentioned I'm running OOS 3.2.0, I'm rooted(systemless... Obviously) and I am using the official version of TWRP.
Is it safe for me to run the OTA? I'm also encrypted if that matters.
I've attached a few screenshots below...

The best option is to download the whole 3.2.1 firmware, flash thru TWRP and immediately flash Supersu, clean Cache and Dalvik Cache and voila!

I think it will fail. You need to download and flash the full OS zip to make it work.
I kind of saw that coming. This is the number one issue I have with rooting and with custom ROMS like CM in the past. Updating is always a giant PITA...
If so, can you post a little about the initial setup? If you want to change kernels do you have to resort back to stock each time?
I understand you need to be completely stock when you install it the first time, I assume with an unlocked bootloader?

I use Magisk on all Nougat roms. I haven't had any luck with "Chainfires" SuperSU v2.78 or any other version for that matter. I think the set up requires a couple more steps that just flashing a SuperSu zip like the one we are all used to but the benefits that come with Magisk are worth it and it just plain works. And if you use the Magisk manager you can also toggle SElinux on and off and turn root on and off for apps that require no root.. I have been on board since N hit and we has no working root accept for this, and once I used it I was hooked.

Yea no prob.
What I did was use the nexus root toolkit to unlock my bootloader (replacement phone) then followed this guide
http://blog.meltedpeng.com/easiest-way-to-install-systemless-root-and-xposed-on-your-nexus-5/
But I replaced the su with the phh super user from magisk.
I also did Franco kernel.
If I need to explain more let me know.

I flashed Magisk v 12, but not showing up in the Magisk manager app.
I'm on Google Pixel ROM(rooted), with SuperSU.
I thought that the installation guide on the Magisk site said that Magisk would over write SuperSU.
Whats your setup, and what process did you use to get Magisk working?

Magisk does not overwrite supersu, if it detects supersu it does not install it's own superuser version. It continues to allow the system use supersu.
If you want to use magisk and use magisk's su, then you'd need to use a rom that does not come rooted and then flash magisk.

A lot of apps won't work if they detect root, or if the SafetyNet won't pass. Android Pay is one of them, but a lot of banking apps, Pokemon Go, Mario Run, etc won't work.

i installed the unofficial TWRP from the forums here, the non-chinese version. and then i flashed the phh superuser because I read somewhere else that it worked with the non-chinese TWRP. So I gained root, but substratum just wouldn't work. I believe I went looking for the files with root explorer to try and give it r/w permissions but it still didn't work.

I've have flashed the stock firmware 6 times now. I originally flash phh's root and had the same issue you had, substratum wouldn't theme at all.
I believe I tried to flash the Chinese TWRP and root that way and I believe the SuperSU binary file couldn't be installed.
You need to remove phh's root completely, just not the APK but unroot completely.
Doing a full factory reset should remove the existing root method you used but it may not.
I've jumped through hoops getting this phone working the way I like my android devices to be.

It's not seem less root as far as I know but there's xposed modules that might work, android pay isn't available in Canada ,so I'm not sure.
I would also fastboot erase userdata as well.
