OK- I got my Verizon Pixel XL 128 in today at lunch. I set it on the charger, and haven't turned it on yet. I wanted to see what was going on with the Forums before I did. I do have a spare TMobile Sim I can use. I also still have my 3rd version of the Note 7 (That hasn't even gotten the slightest bit hot)... so I am not in a hurry to activate the Pixel XL 128.
If you give me directions, I will perform whatever steps you'd like and report back. If you'd like message me... I can provide my cell and we can talk through it-
Thanx-
Darin

It is possible to SIM unlock the m919? I work in IT and travel around a lot. As much as I love T-mo, the reception isn't good unless I'm in a city. About 70% of the time on on an edge connection . I wanna switch to AT&T prepaid.

I don't believe so. However, I did unlock mine with a TW rom. What should happen is when you insert the non-TMO SIM, the phone should prompt for the code.

I told them I was going to Europe for a few weeks and wanted to be able to use cheaper SIM while I was over there.
I think this was the 3rd or 4th phone I've done this with.
Part of the reason I've stayed with PowerTel/VoiceStream/T-Mobile all these years.
You do have to be on touchwiz to unlock
Edit: maybe with a GPE ROM it will work but not sure
Gpe wouldn't have the menus since its already unlocked

With a carrier unlock, all the carrier is doing is releasing the phones IMEI*(International Mobile Equipment Identity) number so that is can be activated with other carriers. It's merely database related and nothing more. Does not affect the bootloader or anything like that in any way.
The only time that code works is when you put the other carriers SIM is in your phone. It will ask that 'code' then.

They're not "releasing the IMEI" and it is not "database related." You confused SIM unlocking with IMEI blacklisting, when a carrier marks a phone's IMEI as stolen and blocks it from their network via blacklist, which is shared among carriers. A SIM unlock, which is what we're discussing, permits the phone's baseband to accept SIM cards with network IDs other than originating carrier, and is done on the handset itself. Don't spread misinformation, please.
In the case of the T-Mobile variant (H811), the ability to input a SIM unlock code was removed and a custom unlock application was installed instead which communicates with T-Mobile's servers to verify the handset is eligible for SIM unlock and then performing the unlock itself if requirements are met.

I have no idea what Sprint does on their devices, since they're CDMA/GSM/LTE hybrids. If there is a preloaded SIM unlock app, you can help us by telling us the unlock app package name and perhaps posting some screenshots of the app and its various options.

i thought this was just tmo and sprint that did this.
the person you quoted was responding to someone with an AT&T variant.
is at&t also doing this?
also, the tmo and spr phones do not accept the typical unlock codes... so it's not a matter of finding the hidden menu. unlock will require a totally different method.
for sprint users... once rooted you can edit the build.prop which opens the phone up.

This can only be done by the US carrier associated with the device. It can also be done by some third party outfits, but you will need to check the web for "SIM unlock code"
AS mentioned earlier the carrier will do this at no charge 99% of the time.

Same error message as I posted earlier.
I have a cricket sim card (in an adapter - nano >standard) in an Incredible 2.
The phone is unlocked.
When I put the sim card in, in both global and GSM mode, I get an error of an invalid sim and it won't let me edit the GSM settings or apn.
Has anyone done this? I just need a phone for the time being. I'm using the sim card in a different phone to type and post this, so I know the sim card is good and active.
Any ideas help? Phone is stock 2.3.4
Thank you in advance.
How exactly did you get the phone unlocked?
called Verizon, got the code. put it in, phone restarts, then says its unlocked.
Any help with the sim issue?

I am getting quite confused about if the Pixel 2 XL for verizon is unlockable and rootable, or if its not?
There are so many thread saying that it is with guides and some that say it is impossible.
Can anyone tell me if its possible? I recently purchased one of these phones via ebay and it was suppose to be google unblocked but its verizon.
So I am wondering if its worth keeping or returning for the unlocked one.
Thanks

You could try it for a bit before dumping it. You may find that you can disable the apps you don't
like and customize it enough to not miss root apps. The P2 XL is actually a great phone out of the box.

There is an app called Virtual Xposed on github, which is basically a rootless Xposed module in a virtual enviornment on the phone, which can do that for you.
I am really gonna test that right now on my note.

Before the first boot the device doesn't have any configuration from Verizon. The only difference between the Google and Verizon model is that there is a pre-installed sim card in it. So, if you were to take the sim card out it wouldn't be recognized as a verizon phone and thus you would be able to unlock the bootloader. The only reason so few people get to unlock the bootloader is because the employee at Verizon turns the phone on in the store and activate it registering the device with Verizon.

Well, I might be wrong because I don't know exactly how the activation process goes but it mostly has to do with imei being registered with Verizon. Which doesn't happen when you buy them directly from Google. I mean they both have the same model number and the software version you have when you get the phone has nothing to do with the oem lock being greyed out. Actually, it might also be the serial for a pre-installed sim card has a different activation process then one that isn't, although that is unlikely.

Other way around. All the phones are registered with Google. They all ship locked. The phone on first boot contacts Google to see if it has permission to unlock, if it is a Google phone it gets permission. If it is a VZ phone it doesn't. It has nothing to do with what SIM is in it. The few VZ phones that do unlock are because Google messed up and entered it as a Google phone.
We have seen and captured the packets as they go to the Google server, it is very clear what is happening.
No offense, but a lot of us have known this for a long time. Since early on in the OG Pixel days. We have explained it time and time again. When we do we get grief for it, which I will get any second now by someone that just got a mislabeld Verizon phone and it unlocked for them. They have no idea how but now they are an expert.
That's why no one is really trying to unlock the phone or help. Nothing but grief if you do. Same reason many of the ROM developers have left xda.

Yeah, I pulled my VZW sim from my 6P and dropped it in the 2 XL prior to first boot and I'm still unlocked and never got any of the VZW crap for the two weeks I remained 100% stock.
So I'm thinking that theory can't be reverse engineered...
