So, drop my Note 4 and broke the screen. No problem. I upgraded to the Note 7 (preordered). Loved it. Then the first recall. Exchange the phone and mere days later comes the 2nd recall. Love the note so I send in my Note 4 to Samsung to get it repaired since there is no new Note to upgrade to. Did I mention that I love the Note? After 4 days I get notified (by checking the status of the ticket) that all out-of-warranty repairs have been suspended by Samsung and they are sending my note 4 back to me unrepaired. They could have told me that before I spent the time to send it in. Now I'm waiting on them to get it back to me so I can find some third party who can fix the screen for me.
I've been faithful to Samsung for many years (TV, tablet, refrigerator, and many phones) but this recent string of events has me wondering where I'll go next. Sadly, there are no other "notes" out there other than Samsung.
Get your act together Samsung!!! You are losing a lot of customers right now.
Thanks for letting me rant...
I love the Note also. Been waiting a long time for one to meet my feature list demand, this one was it, still miss the IR blaster, but I'm holding strong, keeping my N7 until I see something better drop.

I have a Note 4 with a tan banding creeping in on the display. Sure, I can use it, but after using an N7 for almost 2 months.... the Note 4 feels like a commodore 64. I don't want to go to an S7 edge just to get by, but it is the closest available phone to the N7 made. Trying to decide if I should be patient and live with my aging N4 or just get an S7 edge until Samsung comes out with a Note 8 (or whatever they might call it).
Get a new note 5 or note 4? But which is better?

That was the real point of my "rant". I have a note 4 with a broken screen. I sent it in to Samsung to get it fixed so I could revert back to using it. They received it and then sent it back to me UNREPAIRED, saying that all out-of warranty repairs have been suspended by Samsung as of Sept 30 I believe. I had given them my CC number for the charges and everything. They could have told me this before I sent it in since they knew at that time it was out-of-warranty. Luckily, I found a local store here that does repairs. I'll get it fixed there and use my note 4 until I decide what phone I want next. Nothing on the market interests me right now.
Feel your pain.. Had a note 4, after got note 7. Have note 4 to a friend(he gets my old notes) so I hate to ask for it back. Now I'm stuck down down grading top my note 3.. Such a big difference in technology...feels real backwards.. Did I say last time I used it we were on safe strap, 4.4.2

I sent my s6 active back in for a screen replacement. It broke in a situation it should not have but I did not raise a fuss and approved the $237 repair. Well they charged me the $237 and sent it back to me unrepaired with the same note you got. So not only can my phone not be fixed now I have to try and get the charge reversed. I will never purchase any Samsung product ever again.

Note 3 now has an unlocked bootloader with TWRP available and JasmineROM v6.1 (Android v5.0). I was on a Note 3 before upgrading because the Note 4&5 just didn't impress me. I sold my old Perfect condition Note 3 on eBay which I had unlocked using the method which converts it to a Developer Edition. If I have to return the Note 7 I'm going to just have to activate an old Note 3 with a cracked screen that I put together out of spare parts and performed the same Developer Edition MOD. I'm waiting until the last possible date to return because I don't plan to upgrade again until whatever replaces the Note 7 arrives. Such a shame as this was pretty much perfect with root available almost on day one.

Well, at least they didn't actually charge me. Wonder how long this repair halt is going to take place. I took my Note 4 to a local shop and now even they are saying it will be another month before they can get the screen because they are backordered. The saga continues...

TL;DR? Read the title. Nitty-gritty is below.
My Verizon contract is done in May. But I have a deal where I can go to AT&T for free. That being said, at $88 a month on vzw, does it really make sense to wait for the new round of galaxy devices? The money I'd save leaving Verizon would pay for the phone in full by that time. I've got nothing to use on AT&T in the meantime.
It makes economic sense to leave vzw as soon as I can. That being said, the HTC one is coming out in a few weeks, right at the end of my billing cycle. My first and only smartphone has been this thunderbolt. I'm accustomed to HTC and sense. But the lack of swappable battery and SD card slot is something I'd consider a drawback. I can also trade in this tbolt for $100 with their trade in incentive program.
But of all the phones out right now, the Note 2 is the one I want. It just seems to be the perfect phone. I'm just worried about getting it so late in the game. I bet AT&T still charges full price for it too, probably $300 on contract, right? If I got a note, I'd probably want to sell it and put the proceeds toward the note 3, when it gets here...if it isn't 6 inches like the rumors say.
I care about rooting and flashing ROMs. I'd have smashed my bolt by now without those things. HTC seems to be locking down their stuff a lot these days, and if not them, then the US carriers. Is sammy any better?
Seems like the cheapest thing to do would be to ditch vzw asap, and score a HTC One and cash in on $100 for my old tbolt. And while I generally like HTC (wife has a HOX), I can't help shaking the feeling that I should get a note instead.

I would wait for the S4 announcement. Then decide between that and the One.
Yes, wait until the S4 announcement and buy a used S3 on craigslist to carry you over until GN3. The sd card, replaceable battery, and S Pen are 3 important features. The LCD screen on HTC One X is one feature over GN2 but maybe a non issue with future GN3. BTW, GN2 has a ton of incredible developers on XDA.
I own the GN2 and HTC One XL through ATT. The GN2 is all I use.

I'm always in a time crunch and end up with HTC because of it. I wanted the SGS2 in march of 2011, but at the time there were no signs it would be on Verizon, and we all knew unlimited data would be getting canned soon. So, I took a thunderbolt instead.
Now it appears to be the same problem. See, I'm not a "gets a new phone every three months" kinda guy. I have my phone for two years. I want those two years to be as tolerable as possible. Before ICS "officially" came out, my Tbolt felt like crap. Only now with an official release is it finally great again. Honestly, I could stay right here for awhile now, and be good.
But I'm cheap. I want to stop paying Verizon immediately, and start saving. To that end, I need something that'll work on AT&T. The line's there, the upgrade's there; it just seems silly to wait. You might be right about picking up an interim phone.
I just wonder if the note 2 will be valid for two years starting now? I also don't like how AT&T is still charging $ 300 plus a two year agreement for these things. Maybe I should get the one (probably $200 on contract), take advantage of the $100 trade in offer, and sell the one when the note 3 comes out...

What determines to you whether or not a phone is still valid? I, like you, am planning on my next phone to last 2 years. The phone I have now is still valid in my opinion because the developer forums are very active even today. I think this phone will be more relevant two years from now than the HTC One. Like others said though, at least wait until the GS4 announcement, that may bring some price drops on the Note 2.
At the rate they are going now I don't think htc will be there to support anyone in a year or two.

Also remember gadgets change every year! That's how company's make money. But besides that, they're making the chips smaller & smaller! So that just means bigger and better things for us. As of right now the screen of choice is going to be HD on everything, that's coming out. So depending on if you want LCD, Slcd, OLED, or Pen Tile displays. There's all going to be different in that aspect. So if you can hold out, which is what I'm telling my girl to do. But she may wait fir the GN3! Hey on 3/14 we'll know what the S4 is about .
My buddy builds the lasers that makes all our gadgets.

Dev support is part of it. The thunderbolt forums were getting pretty sparse until ICS dropped. My phone was laggy, had modest battery life, and was seemingly stuck on gingerbread.
Specs might be somewhat less important now, but in 2011 phones were still becoming more powerful by an incredible factor. That seems to have slowed a bit of late. I don't know when a quad core phone with a big battery and 720p resolution will become obsolete.
Surely the ability to switch batteries and expand memory should prolong its life. But purchasing the one, besides potentially being cheaper, seems like a safer bet on the time/obsolescence scale. At this point the note 2 is somewhat old.
I really don't think we're witnessing the death knell of HTC any more than we are Apple's. They just aren't a household name to noobs like "the galaxy" and the "iphone." For what it's worth, I like HTC, and have to imagine them as the number 3 company that makes smartphones after Sammy and Apple.
Duely blundered from my thunderdolt.
I'm going to say wait until the S4 announcement later this week. If you can get a chance to play with the One in store then do so. I don't know how it would feel in your hand compared to the Note 2. I personally am going to wait until the S4 or the Note 3 because I think Samsung is the leading manufacturer for Android phones in terms of overall experience. That being said the note 2 has a badass battery and I don't think that the One will be anywhere close to the note in that regards but let's see.... Only time will tell..

I use the S-Pen and the note function on my SGN2 constantly ... it is my most used feature on the phone. I'm not going to try and understand what you need ... but, you should. I wouldn't buy a phone without the pen and note function ... but, you might be different. Decide if you need the note functions on the Note 2 ... if you do to be productive ... then your decision is already made. Wait a few days to see the Galaxy 4 ... just in case it gets the S-Pen. ATT just started selling the Note 2 in October. It may be a while before the Note 3 arrives.

Note 2 refurbished is now $9.99 on Att online. Of course this is 3 days after the return of period on my New one!
With the refurb offer, hmmm. If I take that, then I retain my 'bolt...which I would have traded in for HTC'S one deal. This way I keep the phone and can sell it with the accessories, mebbe for more on swappa...
I know it's refurb, but I usually roll with insurance anyway...
Very very tempted here...

The Note 2 refurb is actually $0.99 today only while supplies last. I ordered one a couple hours ago.
As long as I have access to the community's knowledgebase, then I don't see how a refurb could be bad. (famous last words,eh?)
What do you suppose the most common reason for returning a Note 2 is?

Actually, for anyone who's worrying about this being refurbished, they will definitely replace the phone in question with a brand new model if problems do arise. My mom bought an iPhone 4 (refurbished) a few years back and it didn't work correctly from day one, so she brought it to the Apple Store and they gave her a brand new one. My Samsung Galaxy S II (refurbished) fried itself right before my 90 day warranty ended and I took it to AT&T and they gave me a new one.
My point is, if you can get a MUCH better deal on a refurb, don't hesitate to get it because AT&T/Apple/whoever will replace it if it does have a problem and you will probably end up with a new phone anyhow.

I'm currently driving a T-Mobile SGS2. Obviously, I don't do cutting-edge phones I'm seeing the Note II (used) on ebay for ~ $200-$250 which is in my price range. So, should I pull the trigger? What are the minuses for this device?
I had used this phone for over two years and this phone is awesome. For me there were no minuses for this phone but lots of newer phones come with few pluses.
Buying second hand phone is always a risk but who knows you may end up with a perfect phone but that's the risk you ll b taking.
I read somewhere that this phone will get the lollypop update so you should be good. I m currently using a note 4 and it has few additional features which I hardly use but again this is just my preference. The only reason I switched to note 4 is because I got it via my office.
There were quite few people with this phone who had their EMMC damaged just by itself and this is something to take in to consideration when buying a two year old phone.

Thanks! I almost always buy used. You're rolling the dice, but most folks are honest. I wasn't aware of EMMC damage, I appreciate the warning.
Iv been using my note 2 for 2 years now no issue , i formatted my phone like a 100 time on my side i like it
I have been using the Note 2 for some time as my weekday work phone (I usually switch to a Moto G 2014 on the weekends). I have also flashed mine numerous times (usually 1-2 times a week...I can never settle on a ROM). I am pretty happy with Slimkat 4.4.4 the most...the device is outstanding IMO.
I have thought of upgrading to something else and had a Nexus 6 in my hand at the T-mobile store...the sales rep was acting shady about the whole deal though (I wanted the 64GB version and he was dancing around the availability) so I walked away. I think at this point I would upgrade to a Note 3 (I do not need the heartrate/fingerprint scanner that the Note 4 has) which aside from using slightly more premium materials, its almost the same device.
...right now, they have the refurb Note 2 on T-Mobile's website for $240.00 or $10.00/month.

$240 sounds pretty good for a refurb...
I love my 2yr old Note2 also. Its still a pretty powerful phone. When I first got it I was made fun of for having such a big phone... guess I was trend setting.
But my opinion is probably step up to a Note 3 or something not so outdated.
Also download the OfferUp app ( I have No affliation with this app) its like a yard sale app. I see Note 4s in my area for $400 and Note 2s anywhere from $150-$200 ... always negotiate.
Hi folks,
Yesterday I just received my new and exchanged Note 7 "FD model" and after a replacement Samsung Galaxy Notes 7 has reportedly caught fire in Minnesota. The news comes just days after a replacement Note 7 caught fire on a Southwest flight. I am confused if Samsung will ask for another (2nd) recall again or not? especially the difficulty of returning for those who bought their NOTEs from eBay dot com!!
What do you think guys!! Should I keep it or replace it with Pixel XL ? Although, there is not any official recall from Samsung!!!
So my only two options are:
1- to keep it and enjoy it or
2- sell it and replace it?
I really love my Note 7!
Pixel xl looks horrid

Love my Note7 too, both the first and the replacement. Now though it would appear the Note7 is finished in the US, with the Southwest flight fire. Will Sammy issue updates, will the carrier's bother with anything; it seems very doubtful. I'd opt for the Pixel XL but it's not carried by TMO and I already have the GS7Edge, plus TMO stopped selling the HTC 10. So my options seem to be take the full fiscal hit on what I had on the device prior to the Note7 or venture back to Apple. I believe that tomorrow will be a return of the Note and a wait for the iPhone 7 plus; I'll keep a foot in both camps.

Do you love your health, family, property less ?
If a second recall is issued, and god forbid anything happen to your note 7 if you decided to keep it and damage was caused to you, your family, or home - any insurance company would use the fact the device was 'recalled' and you elected to keep it as a reason to void any potential claim, as by ignoring a recall - you would make yourself liable / culpable.
Wait and see if a recall is issued. If it is, just for the sheer common sense, return the phone...
Have you guys know the cases about replacement of new N7 been exploded again ? Answer for me is obviously that keep my life is more important than keep a N7.
Keep it for sure :fingers-crossed:
If there is another recall, it goes back. But until then I will keep it..

Yeah ... right when I can get a new phone this problem comes up and now I don't really have something to get... need a good camera and > 5.5"...

- moto z > cam not that good
- Sony Z5 > no alternate firmware / root without loosing some cam quality etc.

Right now I even thing about getting a nexus 6p (like my wife, nightshots are awesome and cheap to get). Still will wait a bit how this disaster plays out for samsung. If they can fix it, the note is not off the table.

If Samsung ceases total production on it or even if they put out a v3 .. they would have to replace it for you since it's now a pariah. I'd call them and get them to exchange it for an S7 Edge. It IS the very least they could do. I really, really wanted this 2nd battery to be the fix and we could move on. Alas, that sh** ain't happening.
Im going to have to ask for a full refund. No need to try thirst note 7.

Ya this truly is a $hit storm. I love this unit as it runs perfect I'm still actually using the original unit but since all these new inconvenience it's getting frusting especially if ever they decide to stop supporting and updates. :crying:
So, will we be able to exchange the S7 Edge loaners for Note 7's once they are deemed safe again?
I know it's a hassle, but I really like this phone. I don't even care about Nougat or future updates other than security updates...
Samsung can stick the 25$ gift card/credit up their a$$. I wasted countless hours in the last 2 months on this phone. Great phone but not worth all this BS.
I suppose I will hold onto it until the v20 hits. Hopefully it's not hard to obtain since many will be jumping the sinking Samsung ship like I am.
I want to keep the Note 7. I don't want any other device. I'll replace it again if needed but I want another Note 7. There is no other device comparable to the Note. Maybe by some miracle we can get a unlocked bootloader edition Note 7 by chance. Just think how awesome custom Roms could be for this device.

You would have to wonder how much time and effort Samsung will put into this device with future updates...the community around this device will be small as well, which won't bode well for custom roms.
I was waiting for my wife's carrier to get the Note 7 in stock to get one (they had already discounted it to $0 on a 2 year contract, and her contract was up). I have and love my S7 and it has me spoiled.
If anyone can name me a 5.5in amoled screen or larger phone with awesome camera, sd card slot and good water resistance, I'll bite. I'm not a fan of the big curves of the S7 Edge
Guess I'm on track with having the S7 Edge for 2-3 years, then getting the Note 9 or 10...
Wonder what the tech will be then?
I agree with that, I am not giving up mine, but am worried about the future of updates. I have the ATT one, and they suck on updates anyways. That scares me more than the phone popping.

The way I see it, samsung will not put too much effort into updating it...because they DID say to return it completely or exchange it...as a business if i have sent out such notice, i will not expect buyers to dive at it once again (upon a second recall) if ever released...with that information, i will put my energy elsewhere to bring in profit...rather than a sinking ship.
adding sammy delay in update to that of the carrier...we are looking at nouget in 2 years lol
Over the past 2 years the Note series and S series phones have become very closely related, almost identical besides the s-pen and software. I wouldn't doubt for Samsung to scrap the note line altogether after this and have the S8 and new S8+ with included s-pen. Nightmare from the note goes away and they continue on with their successful S series. They've already had a Note 8 before so they had to change something with the name anyway. Just an idea.

I think they push a FW update again, disabling the phone if you do not power down yourself.
But yes, I can wait... again....
In lieu of this HORROR to my beloved Note 7, to which i have enjoyed a replacement since around 9/12 with not a single blip nor issue... I do NOT want to send back this device, but under the current circumstances and warnings by the CDSC, we have no choice. So Samsung, you want to keep me from going off to Schmapple or HTC, Motorola, Sony.. Here is what you do...
You inform the carriers to give us replacement devices, lets say the S7E or what have you. Then, Upon release of a Fixed, New, and Tested NOTE 8.. You have the carriers bypass all the bullcrap they are going to feed us about upgrading, and let any known and proven Note 7 UPGRADE TO IT FOR FREE.
That is customer service, and showing how to take care of the Loyal Samsung consumer. Most of us here do not want to leave your brand, and still put faith in the company, even in the hardest times with the Note 7. Its a fantastic device, best phone i have ever seen or had IMO hands down. I personally used a Note 3 for 4 YEARS, bypassing the 4 and 5, to wait on this device. Im not giving up so easily, but in all good faith your in severe crisis mode now. Treat the consumer right. You can't live without us, and some of us have chosen to stand by your product.

I agree this is their best course of action. I've been an LG owner for 4 phones in a row (Spectrum, G2, G3, and V10) and decided to try the Note 7 because the V20 was taking too long to release. Now I really like the Note 7 and don't want to return it. I'm actually going to hang on to it as long as possible because I want more news and information as to what is going to happen. There isn't anything out that even comes close to being able to replace the Note 7. I use the S-Pen constantly and it's the reason I wanted to try a Note 7 to begin with. I never use my finger on this phone and I love always having a fingerprint free screen.
Samsung needs to make this right though if they want to salvage some of what they've lost because of it.
I hope they do something like that. I would be shocked if it actually happened. I have owned many Samsung phones. Fascinate, Droid Charge, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S3, Note 2, Note 3, Note 4, Note 5 and the Note 7.
I am pretty much done. I preordered a Pixel XL from Google. I will probably pick up a Moto G4 for the month and keep it as a spare.

The Galaxy Nexus was probably the worst I owned. I went through 5 of them. The Charge was pretty bad though.

I hope my idea and words gets passed around, i tweeted it (@Baldassano), so if anyone wants to RT it, Get samsung to see it, it just may help everyone's situation.
Thanks
They lost like...$17 Billion yesterday. It's just getting started. I'm not expecting much, they're a huge diversified company that doesn't even try that hard to maintain phones from a year ago. This was a brilliant phone (I thought) but I doubt I'll buy another Samsung after this nightmare. I'd love to think they'd make some dramatic turn toward the customer and become reborn as a something better, like an Android version of what Apple has going, but no one seems to know how to do that in the Android space.
Your dreaming. Verizon would not honor the $25 promised gift. I love the replacement note 7 and I'm keeping it.

Get on chat with them. That's how I got mine. Just mentioned what Samsung said on their page.

Well, I guess i'm one of the only people who owns two of the original Note 7's . I have had no issues with my phone except for the darn warning that pop's up when i charge it. My reason for still having these two devices in my possession is that Verizon never got around to sending replacements to their retailers and wouldn't except all returns to the corporate store. So here we sit with original Note 7 devices.
I have owned every note except for the original one which was only offered by ATT, not i'm being offered a galaxy S-7, hell the S series is which i ended with a note, can't handle it, i need the pen, i need the functionality, i need the freedom which is why i came on to see if i can find a root for my device. If i find a root and get rid of the recall message i will not be trading in my phone, if the message appears I might consider it, but i still i won't especially since my only choice if i want to trade in my phone is a 32 GB note 5, hell i traded in 64 GB to get this device.
What's a Note user to do until the next release. ........
Here's my theory. I had the original, had no issues. Exchanged it. I've taken this thing in the sauna at the y 3 times and it still hasn't done anything. Hell, I charged it on the arm of the couch last night and monitored the temp just to see, and it actually cooked down from 91 to 77. What exactly is causing the issues to begin with is my question?
Well they lost me. I have been an iPhone user since the iPhone 4 and recently just got the Note 7 because I am sick of Apple too, but got my new Note 7 about a week ago and here I am sending it back. I enjoyed my Note 7 over the iPhone but after this cluster f*** I am going to the iPhone 7. I am so disappointed in this whole thing though. I had a VR headset coming and everything.
I loved my 2 Note 7s and never had any issues with either of them. I'm back on my note 4 for now. I'm contacting my carrier to see if they'll waive the year's wait for the Jump program so I can get another Note when it launches. I believe it'll be up to the carrier, not Samsung.
RIP Note 7.

Cool story bro
I have an original note 7 and yeah that notice that pops up when you charge your phone is annoying but I'm not giving this phone up. I've even dropped it once when it was out of its case and the screen cracked a bit. Came from a note 4 and this is hands down the best and most comfortable smart phone out right now, or it was at least. Nothing else out there really peaks my interest too much.

Verizon didn't want to do my exchange because the line that I had with the N7 is no longer active
