That's not necessarily true. If you take the sim card out and turn off mobile data you can get around them pinging your old phone. I did the same thing with my Verizon Samsung GS4.

Not if the sim chip is out. If you're worried change your IMEI number. I've been using my Galaxy S4 for over a year now with no issues from Verizon.

...seems like a dumb question, right? Here's the deal, I broke my (Google) 64GB Nexus 6 last Saturday night... sucks, but I have insurance! So I file a claim, pay $150, and Asurion sends me a Verizon (my carrier) 32GB Nexus 6... I called them up and they told me that's all they had. After talking to a couple of people and me saying I would cancel the insurance if they couldn't give me the same device I insured, they mentioned they could give me a Pixel XL 32GB!!! Having missed the original preorders I've been trying like hell to preorder a Pixel XL with no luck, so this was a no brainer (although it sucks that it's only 32GB).
Fast forward a day, and I have my phone!!! But there are a couple of things off about it. For one, it doesn't say Verizon anywhere on the box, phone, within Android, boot up... nothing! There are also zero preloaded Verizon apps?! I thought they would at least put "MyVerizon" on it... So is there anywhere I can look to determine which version I have? Another thing, I've had a hell of a time getting it activated on Verizon. I had switched back to my old S4 after breaking my Nexus 6, and had to go to Verizon to get a micro-sim card. Nobody at Verizon has been able to register the phone with the new SIM card, after hours on hold I gave up and just cut my S4 micro-sim card - problem solved... but why couldn't Verizon activate the phone? That might be unrelated, just something I was thinking about.
One last note, I already ran depixel8 (which succeeded) on the phone. I'm not sure what would happen if this was done on a non-verizon version... but I can't test this by unlocking the bootloader since that's already done!
TLDR: Got Pixel XL from Asurion to replace my broken Nexus 6 I had previously used on Verizon, and I can't find any mention of Verizon anywhere! Did they send me a Google version of Verizon version?

I don't think this necessarily means that it is a Verizon model since I have a Google Store purchased Pixel XL with the same build number.
My best guess to see if the phone is a Verizon model is if the bootloader is not unlockable.
Is the toggle in settings to allow bootloader unlocking grey or can you toggle it?

I cannot toggle it (and couldn't before unlocking it either). Is this really the only sign that the phone is a Verizon? Other than the boatloader (which was easily fixed) I guess Verizon deserves props for not screwing with the device! Or Google deserves props for not letting Verizon screw with it, lol.

Another thing you can do is look in "My Verizon" and see if it shows up as "Other Device" or Pixel XL. Other device would indicate a play store device which I highly doubt that they sent you.
Another thing you could do is install an app on the play store. When the drop down shows up it will say Verizon Google Pixel XL.
When I sign in to my Verizon account on my laptop, it lists my Google Pixel as: PIXEL NON-VZW.

Yay, a definitive answer, thanks!!!
The back story here is interesting...
There are so many refurbs this soon in the game that Google is already letting Asurion have them... AND, they can use them to replace other brands of phones.
The flickering screens and maybe BT issues seem to be racking up some casualties. Meanwhile many of us have been waiting near a month for XL 128's
So much blood at the bleeding edge.
Hmm I have a Verizon version but yet the unlock isn't greyed out and I'm able to enable it....

I'm going on a trip in March.
My plan is to use an old phone on the trip...swap the sim card.
Then swap back when I get home.
Think it will work?
It's a good question. You certainly could go back to your old phone, but will they let you reactivate the N7 once you get home is the real question. I may have the same dilemma soon. Not sure how to handle the situation.
You should be able to ask for a sim or buy one one eBay

But would they let him/her reactivate the N7 sim after he/she got back?
The reactivation. Is the problem. Get a burner phone give number on note 7 message.
I swap my Verizon sim between 2 different phones all the time. Note 7 and Turbo 2 with no issues. I had the Turbo 2 reactivated on my line in place of my Note 7 and then couldn't get my SD card to read in my Turbo so swapped the Sim back into my Note 7 and it worked just fine

I'm tempted to try that with my Note 4 right now. My 91 yr old grandmother fell and broke her hip 2 weeks ago and I might have to fly down to TX (I'm in the pacific NW). Not going to chance bringing the N7 on to the plane. If it is as easy as just swapping the sim then rebooting that is great.

It's tempting to try that. Don't know how closely they look at the phones when you go through security, but I am not going to try that. There really isn't any legal way of getting my N7 down to TX from MT unless I drive (and yes I know the replies to the legal part that will probably be coming). I mean, I could try to send my N7, but that would be no different than bringing it on a flight with me honestly. Hell, too bad we can't crack the case open and just remove the damn battery.
I will probably just put my sim in my N4 and get by for the week or two I am there. It will be somewhat of a shock going back to the N4, but I am sure I can live with it for a week or two.

If I do, I will post about it here how the swap goes. Hoping to not have to fly down until later in January, but her condition has worsened and I may have no choice.
Don't fly with the N7. As much as I love this phone don't run the risk of the TSA exposing you and the Police taking you out of the terminal and slapping you with an out of worldly fine. Just don't. I'm a firm believer in this phone but the masses are not. Take the chance, if it doesn't activate oh well. It wasn't meant to be anyway.

You can swap the sim card from phone to phone with no interaction with Big V. I move mine from S3 to Note 3 to Note 4. Your phone in use on your my verizon info will change to reflect the phone in use. Unfortunately the Note 7 uses a micro sim card that is about 25% smaller so you can't swap to the older Notes.

Maybe they should borrow a phone with a matching sim, if possible.
Or just buy a nano SIM adapter. I use one to swap from N4 to N7.

Crap, I forgot the sim in the N4 was a different size. I haven't had to fly yet, but that decision could be coming soon. Depends on how my grandmothers health is - and it hasn't been going in the right direction. I better look at amazon for a nano sim adapter. Thanks for bringing that up.
Just wanted to follow up on this thread. I did in fact swap my sim from my N7 into my N4. I had to use a sim adapter (bought for a few bucks on Amazon) to fit the smaller sim from the N7 into the N4. It took a little finagling, but it did work. I used my N4 for two days while flying, then put the sim back in my N7 when I got to my destination. There was not problem doing this, the sim worked in both phones once I put it in and rebooted.
However, I now see that the N7 may be IMEI bricked soon, so it all may be moot. I did not risk taking my N7 through security to fly, I brought my N4 with me while flying. The N4 seemed slow and simply old. Still nicer than most phones out there, but compared to the N7, well, the N7 is far nicer. Sadly, If I cannot find a way to continue to use my N7, I may have to go back to the N4 as I can not find a viable replacement that works with VZ and has enough features to work as an N7 replacement. The Axon 7, Mate 9 and Asus zen phone deluxe would all probably work, but NONE of them work on Verizon. So I am very much hoping VZ does not IMEI brick the N7. I have all update apps disabled on my N7 since day one, so I am on the original firmware, but I cannot beat an IMEI block that VZ is supposedly doing by the end of January. If anyone knows of a fix for this, please PM me. Much thanks!

Unfortunately, that's 7.1.1, so the vulnerability that allowed dePixel8 to unlock bootloader was patched. You won't be able to unlock the bootloader on this phone. If, as I suspect it's actually a VZW version. That's sure what it sounds like.

Sorry but it sounds like you may have gotten taken. I would never recommend to buy phones off craigslist. Your better off buying off of ebay or swappa. If you purchase on ebay you get buyers protection with a 30 day guarantee then if you fund by credit card you have 6 months of protection through your cc company but if you use that your paypal account or ebay account could have some kind of issue as ebay / paypal would take the loss and lets say they would hold it against you.

Then again I'm sure the guy just didn't know the difference between Google and Verizon Pixel. He kept saying Google so now that I think about it I think he was saying Google because it's the pixel and he didn't know better. But for $600 I'll settle for a that. It stinks but I'd either use it as is or resell it. I highly doubt there will be a future hack. It's not like the dev's can't figure it out but the audience is not there anymore. Not saying it can't happen, I just think it is unlikely.
The phone is great stock but if you want to play, sell the phone you just purchased and buy one from Google directly. You got it for a good price so you likely won't lose much, if anything.

Verizon locked your phone, and locked you in at the same time. Like others have said you bought the wrong variant of the P2XL. Maybe you feel you were/are forced to buy the wrong variant because you cannot buy an unlocked phone to escape the clutches of the Red Devil, but you would be wrong. Buying a phone subsidized by Verizon (getting the phone up front and paying for it on-contract for 2-3 years) is no different than just financing it from a reputable source. Finance any unlocked phone you like. At that point you are free to stay with Verizon until your contract is up and then go to any other carrier you like. Hardware good. Verizon bad.

There are exceptions, as VZW did not carry the Huawei 6P but it does work, very well I might add, on their network. The downside of using a non-VZW device on their network is you lose some of the goodies that come with a VZW supplied device (free vzw cloud, asurion insurance, etc).

As a VZW user myself, I found that in order to root / mod any recent device offered by Verizon, you MUST buy from the manufacturer (unlocked).
Google has many offers similar to VZWs payment structure with 0% interest for two years, or you can buy it outright as I did and not mess with payments.
If you're stuck using only the devices offered through a VZW retailer, I don't think you're going to be rooting / modding your device anytime soon.

I guess it really comes down to your priorities. If you are willing to consider phones not sold by Verizon (but still CDMA compatible) you could start by looking HERE for some ideas. Although being unlock-able is a requirement, it doesn't guarantee dev popularity... so you would need to cross check your top choices here on XDA. Just go into the respective forums and have a look around at the number of ROM's/Kernels, etc. (TWRP/Magisk support is critical, too) for each respective phone. If Android 9.0 and regular functionality and security updates are important, you may find yourself circling back to the Pixel2 again. Prices will drop even more when the P3's hit. If you go this route I strongly recommend you buy directly from Google as your warranty experience will be far superior across the board than if you buy from anywhere else. Financing is available.

When you say Huawei 6P do you mean the Huawei built Nexus 6P? If so I'm pretty sure that won't work. Verizon is notorious for not allowing phones that they don't sell to be actived on its network even if the phone fully supports the network. I know for a fact that Verizon won't allow the Nexus 5X on its network. Unless Verizon has changed things since last November.
