Bricked my 5X w/ Google Play Services 9.8.77 - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I updated my Google Play Services (via APK Mirror) after reading this post on fixing a drain issue. I updated from 9.6.83 to 9.8.77. I downloaded 9.8.77 (440-135396225).
My phone froze and tried to re-start, but now all I ever see is the white Google logo, it hangs there for a bit, and then re-boots three times, never getting to the boot animation.
I seem to be able to get into Fastboot mode and then into recovery. I've tried to "Apply update from ADB" and side-load the 9.6.83 APK, but get a "footer is wrong" error with the install aborted.
Do I have any options?

I think it's common LG bootloop issue, you need to go for a replacement. Have you tried flashing factory image?

Couldn't unlock the bootloader--kept getting "Failed".
Phone kept boot-looping and then eventually died (even though it was plugged in) and fried itself: won't even turn on any more. Contacted Google and got it RMA'd.

Oh that's painful death, what model you have? And build date?

I have h791 ,the same is happening to me. 15.12 21015.

If there's a way for you to get into recovery, I'd recommend you do a factory wipe reset. This problems seems to fry the phone so that might be your last shot before it's fried.

[Q] Nexus 7 suddenly bricked ?

Hello all, so yesterday I went on my tablet (Nexus 7 2013 WIFI ver.) and browsed the net a bit and went to sleep. I recall having around 30% battery power. This morning I wake up to an apparently flat battery (power button didn't turn on anything) so I just plugged it in and did something else. After a while, I took my tablet and started it with the power button. However, it got stuck on the Google logo and never fired up anything. I've rooted the tablet quite some time ago (months) so the cause is not from there.
Things I haven't recently done:
Installing an app.
Rooting or flashing anything.
Updating an app.
Things I have tried doing to fix the problem:
Booting into FASTBOOT then trying the recovery mode = still stuck on the Google logo.
Booting a custom recovery image using Wug's toolkit = frozen at the team logo (TWRP) / black screen (CWM).
Flash Stock + Unroot (Soft-Bricked/Bootloop) = FAILED (flash write failure).
So now I'm really stuck and desperate to make the device work again. I've been reading all day long and trying all sorts of solutions to no avail. And it seems far-fetched to me for a device like this to just instantly brick itself without any reason at all.
Can anyone help me with this case ? Or does anyone has any idea what just happened to my tablet ? :crying:
EDIT: I'm afraid that warranty might not work as the device was unlocked and rooted so it's the last solution for me.
Bumpity bump
No one has any idea what happened to the tablet and how to fix it ? I've tried doing some more flashing but to no avail. It just refuses to flash and keeps failing to write the files.
I think you need to leave out on the charger for 1/2hr without doing anything with it. You are probably using what little power it has charged by trying to reboot it, etc.
I had to do that once and it did the trick.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app
There is no reason you should not be able to get in to recovery (power and volume down).
You could call Motorola. They have good tech support.
The exact same thing happened to me. I rooted it months ago and haven't changed a thing since then. It just froze up a few days ago. I restarted and it just gets stuck on the google screen. I can get into the bootloader, but when I try to go to recovery, the google screen comes up and won't go away. I've tried every method I can find for flashing the stock image and absolutely nothing is working. I just get stuck on the google screen.
Please update this if you find a solution!
Do u guys have the most up to date version of whatever particular recovery that you're on?
Yep. I've flashed the stock recovery multiple times to no avail. :/

If you can't get into recovery or flash any images it sounds to me like a hardware failure. Bad memory maybe? If you've tried everything then RMA to Asus before the one year warranty runs out.
Have you tried to see if your computer sees your N7 by typing fastboot devices if you have the sdk installed?

Yes, I can get into the bootloader just fine and I can use fastboot. I go through the flashing process and the command prompt says everything flashed successfully, but when I restart the device, it hangs on the google logo. The same thing happens when I try to boot into recovery.

If you fastboot flashed the factory image and can't boot up then it sounds like a hardware problem. Out of ideas, sorry.

Bootloop, soft brick?

I don't know why, but for some reason my nexus 5x is stuck in a bootloop. I was rooted running 6.0.1 (MTC19T) when it shutoff and was not trying to update to N as others were.
I can access the bootloader, but not recovery (just reboots). I have flashed other stock 6.01 OTA's which hasn't changed anything. Flashing TWRP again does nothing. Was trying to follow THIS thread, but PC does not recognize phone in download mode. Also, the phone will only stay download mode for about 15 seconds before rebooting. Any advice?

Well If u can access bootloader you can flash any firmware using fastboot commands.
Totally weird, but my 5x just did the same thing. I opened the Yahoo Sports app, and it froze. An attempted reboot, and it's now stuck in a boot loop. If I try to enter recovery, it reboots. Unfortunately, my desktop is at work, so I can't troubleshoot right now.
I'm starting to wonder if I'll be reading several of these posts today. Hmmm...

Yes, but I've tried flashing multiple different stock images from the google repository by unzipping them and flashing the components to no avail. Is there another way to flash it? Should I be flashing something else?

Same here, when I went back from 7 to 6.0.1 bootloop. I unfortunately did not get to try the TOT file method as I had already RMA it out and just this morning caught this.
Out of all the Android devices it amazes my how easily this device bricked. I had numerous HTC devices and despite being carrier locked and using a java card to unlock the bootloader i never once had this issue with with any of them, they are very forgiving and will be seriously considering the 2016 HTC nexus as this one is only 4 months old. Im nowhere near n noob to rooting and flashing but disappointed how unforgiving the device is. Granted there are some things I really like about it, but bricked in 4 months is a bad sign of quality IMO.
Nexus are impossible to brick, unless you flash stock factory image...
I have had this same problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/help/5x-bootloops-recovery-t3391459
Eventually after disassembly, I called Google Play and LG, to have it replaced.
I also had a cracked camera glass and screen, got a new Nexus 5x , and havent been charged since it seems the phone was due for failure no matter what.
The problem SEEMS to be the button or signal of of the power button always being pressed. When it's off it will even turn on by itself, and maybe if your lucky itll stay on for a while.
Call in, request RMA

This is not true, unless in context TO BRICK, as they seem to be BRICKING themselves sometimes. Hardware defects exist in all electronics, even the good ol'nexus

Weird bootloop issue

I was just playing on my Nexus 5x, and it randomly crashed and rebooted and it's stuck on the Google screen with the unlocked bootloader icon and it just keeps restarting.
I am running Purenexus. I don't know what to do, I have data on the phone and I cannot risk losing it. I can only get into bootloader mode and not recovery.

UPDATE: Tried going to 7.0, same stuff happened.
Asked for an RMA, they agreed, I re-bought the phone and they charged my card (temporarily). However, Google's processing orders is super slow. I hope no one has to suffer like I do. It is still currently processing.

Cant find valid operating system after during update - please help

My mom's pixel 2 xl all of a sudden wont boot. It said cant find valid operation system. The device will not start. She said it might have updated overnight or something like that. I tried to download the factory image from google to restore the OS but it wont flash without bootloader being unlock. It odd that the phone was working and now it doesnt have an OS.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Can you get to stock recovery for a factory reset?
It doesn't even let me get to recover. Picking recovery from the bootloader screen just make the phone restart like it try to go to recovery but then it come back to the same screen saying it can't find valid operating system.
Same happend to me on my first unit when I relocated the bootloader.
Unit resetted and then can no longer find an operating system..
Only option was to call Google and RMA it. I've seen it happen to others on the web as well

Tell them exactly that. It no longer boots
As soon as I said there was no valid os the rep proceeded to rma. Seem like it a know issue so they didn't bother to transfer me to tech support.
Not sure if you want to try any of these solutions before you RMA, but here's another thread on the same "No OS ....." with several options, might be worth a try?
I ran into the same issue, however I found a solution, perhaps universal perhaps not.
When I enter fastboot mode, my phone shows (until I release the power/vol buttons) the "Start" option that is part of the boot mode. After releasing, I get the "no rom detected." So I used the script at the top of https://forum.xda-developers.com/pi...ol-deuces-bootloop-recovery-flashing-t3704761. I used the script by running it WHILE pressing the Power/Vol keys.
This worked for me.
Note: I let go of power/vol after starting script.

Question Hard bricked - help needed

Hello,
In the rush of flashing the january update I've flashed by mistake the Pixel 5 image bootloader (my wife's phone)
Yest that's stupid, I've done this every months for years with several Pixel phones, but I was listening to music at the same time and did dl the wrong image...
Anyway my phone is now hard bricked but I'm sure there must be a way to enter the other bootlader slot and/or entering a special recovery tool.
I cannot enter bootloader anymore
Requesting some help as I'd avoid to send it for a reflash...
Thanks !

No that's the problem.
But there are 2 bootloader slots (a and b) and I'm pretty sure there is way to switch from one to another with a special tool or button sequence.
I've already tried many button combinaison with no luck.
This kind of error is so stupid that I hope there is a way to force a rescue bootloader or something on boot.
yes but you need to be able to communicate with your phone from your pc.....if you cant access fastboot then how will you change partition?

The only special tools we have are either the pixel repair tool or the android flash tool. If both can't get you fastboot / firmware flashing, that's it. Hardbrick. Google Pixels don't have "special" hardbrick solving tools, like older OnePlus had. You need to contact Google.

Do you remember what went wrong?
EDIT: Uh, never mind. So you accidentally used the P5 fw. Why on hell would the device accept the P5 fw at all?!
Same problem here: downloaded from a blog the latest firmware. They have linked the pixel 5 firmware and named it as Pixel 6 pro full firmware. Just flashed without looking and now the phone wont boot. No reaction at all, no fast boot or whatsoever. Have filled in a repair request in my google account, because I’ve bought it directly in their store.
Do you think they have a way to find out what went wrong? I meant the phone is not giving any signal, regardless of which button combination I press. Worst case: I have to pay for the repair…

WOW. So even holding volume down and power until you see the fastboot screen wont work? sometimes you have to hold it for a while. I say that because when the December firmware came out I accidentally flashed the wrong region but was able to access bootloader and so was able to rescue myself. So sorry dude. That really sucks.

Yes worst case we'll have for repair but they could have implemented a simple device id check on their script prior flashing anything, especially for the bootloader.
Anyway, I'm alive, in a good health and it's just a phone

You can flash gobbledygook to your phone if you're not careful. You can flash a non-Google phone's image. Flashing just flashes what you tell it to flash.

That sucks. I'm sure you know now, always go straight to the source for everything if possible, firmware, platform tools, drivers, BIOS / UEFI (for computer).
SDK Platform Tools
Get the Google USB Driver
Pixel 6 Pro Factory Images
You can also Google for official pixel firmware and the top search result is what the want. I know it doesn't help you now. Good luck with your phone!

I know that you tried to get into Fastboot. Pixel 6/6P also has a Recovery mode. I can get to it from a working phone.
I would think that there is someway to boot into Recovery mode from a dead phone via button combos.
