Nexus 5x ruining my headphones? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there.
Got my nexus 5x 32g 3 months ago working perfectly so far.
All stock, NBD90W. Locked.
Two days ago used the LG headphones im using for long time.
Worked perfectly until i disconnected them for a few minutes and than connected again - my phone did not recognized them and it played music using the speaker. Using this guide https://youtu.be/Vy7A4UeIn-w - the headphones recognized but was working only on one side.
After connecting them to galaxy s3 for testing the screen froze and was unresponsive until i disconnected them.
I switched the headphones to JBL and worked perfectly.
Today, after using them for two days, the same problem reappeared. Working on one side, after connecting the same way as explained in the guide.
Connected them to galaxy s7 and left side sounds really weak.
Looks like the nexus is ruining my headphones.
Any help? Anybody experiencing something similar?
Maybe the output voltage is too high on one side?
(And yea, im sure the cable is fine)
Oh and while both headphones connected there is a static noise out from the left side.
Edit: connected both headsets to my sound system - the left side sounds really crappy, like it burnt.

3.5mm Headphone jack not registering...

I have a Sprint Galaxy Nexus running CNA 3.4.1. I've only used the headphone jack maybe twice before to listen to music and everything worked just as it should. Recently however, i tried plugging in some regular headphones and when i played my music it came out the speakers. So i tried a few different headphones and some speakers and still the same problem. The little headphone icon that usually shows up in the status bar doesn't show up. I looked inside the 3.5mm jack and its clean, no lint, bent wires, anything. But no matter what i do i can't seem to get any headset to work. I'm forced to use my bluetooth adapter for my speakers.
This isn't a grave issue as i may rarely use headphones at all. But knowing that option isn't there anymore is just an inconvenience.
Any help appreciated. No rush. Just wondering if anyone else ran into this problem and knows how to fix it.

UPDATE: Turns out after trying to play music through my bluetooth adapter it doesn't work. Bluetooth is connected, my speakers are hooked up, and the music is playing on my phone. Just no sound at all. This is a big deal! It's as if my phone won't play audio through anything but the internal speaker.
Again any help is appreciated.

Return to stock ROM to see if that fixes the problems. If not, it's likely a hw issue that headphones aren't detected.

I did that and still did not recognize it. Feels like my only option left is to open the phone and see if something was disconnected or get a new one.

Headphone Output Buzzing - faulty?

Received my Nexus 7 here in the UK yesterday. Very happy with everything other than that when I connect it to an audio output such as my Jambox it let's out a continuous low hum when no music is playing, regardless of whether the charger is connected or not. There is no noise when using headphones however. I have ensured that the jacks are connected properly and pressed in as far as they will go. I've tried two cables - one from my Jambox and another from my Nokia 360 speaker and both work fine with my HTC One - no buzz whatsoever.
Can someone test this out on their 2013 Nexus and tell me if they have the same problem? It isn't the end of the world as I don't use direct audio connections like this often but will obviously get it replaced regardless if it is a definite fault.

Headphones buzzing sound

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this but I have a buzzing sound in my headphones in the left ear. It is fairly loud when the phone is idling. When I switch apps or screens it goes away momentarily then starts again. I have tested it in the music app and it does not appear to be an issue while playing music. I checked some very low volume sources and its not there. Still I wonder if I have a bad unit or have something activated doing this. I am completely stock new AT&T LG G3.
Update: After testing a few more sets of headphones, this only happens on my Bose QC15s which have the noise cancellation. Its interesting though that the Bose are dead silent on my Galaxy S5 and my wifes iphone. I tried both cables with them (since one is designed for idevices) but it doesn't make a difference. Not sure what interference they are picking up but I think I will take them to an AT&T store this weekend and see if it does it on their display models.

I think it's the same thing. With the Bose it's like a humming buzzing sound. I don't hear it at all with the Apple $79 IEMs. They are listed at 23ohm impedance. With mine it's as if theorizing switches on and off though. I can switch apps or play music and its dead quiet after I immediately pause but then it clicks back to buzzing.

I was almost returning my G3 and i was like "Hell no, again..." , i have exchanged my nexus 5, 5 times! and still has the same problem!
One interesting thing I will note guys, when I plug my headphones in that I hear a buzzing sound, I get the headphone icon in the NB. When I plug in the Apple headphones that I cannot hear the buzzing sound at all I get the headset icon in the NB.
I have read this is a Kit Kat 4.4 issue but I did not have it at all with a Galaxy S5. I am hoping it will be fixed soon but I am thinking about grabbing some different headphones anyway.
I have the buzzing just listening through the earpiece on the phone itself, no headphones required. I have the T-Mobile D851 model. So one would theorize that this is also using power since it's powering the earpiece to make noise. Some kind of electrical interference in the phone itself would be my guess.
Hi. Just got my UK spec G3 in the last few hours and I've just come across what I believe is the same problem. There is a distinct buzzing/crackling/static sounds when I have headphones connected via the 3.5mm jack. The sound is only present when I have certain media playing (using Spotify at the moment). I only notice this when connected using the jack and not when using my Bluetooth receiver (HTC BH S600). I did hear this while using two pairs of earphones while they were directly plugged into the device, the LG QuadBeat 2s from my G3 and the in box headphones from my old HTC One M7.
This has to be a software problem. I was just testing again and the buzzing becomes stronger in any app I use just when I touch the screen and scroll. I hope this is an easy fix in a custom rom. Also as I reported earlier, I do not have the buzzing during playback. I know this because I have tested some very quiet tracks and also checked on some very long gaps between songs. If it is humming it is much quieter. Only when I exit out of the Music app it is immediately quiet then it clicks in at about 2-3 seconds. I have also had a few quirks today where my headphones come up with the Aux Icon then after pausing the Music app a few times they switch to the Headset icon.
Not really sure what is going on but there has to be a software fix.
I will say the Music app sounds unbelievable with Viper4Android installed. It definitely has more oomph than with Play Music. Comparing the same tracks in both apps back and forth, the Music app is cleaner. Not sure what LG has done in that app but I like it.
I only get a buzz during charging. Disconnect the charger and it goes away. Most devices I've owned have the same issue recently. S4, S5, note 3, moto maxx, moto X, nexus 5 have all done it to me but only while charging
I have a really nasty popping crackling sound in between tracks when using aux in my car, but headphones no issues... Never had that problem at all on my nexus 5 so it can't be my head unit in my car
I wanted to post an update to this problem. I originally reported I had this issue with my Bose QC15 headphones. I do not have this issue with my Apple In Ear headphones. Today I was diagnosing things again and had been listening the the Apples. The Apples always correctly have the headphone icon show up in the Notification bar. When I plug in the Bose, I always get the Aux icon. This got me to thinking about if the cable was different. I pulled the cable out of the Bose and on the end that inserts into the headphones themselves there is a Hi Low switch. Mine was on high. When I switched it to Low, the G3 started to recognize them as headphones and not show the Aux icon. The hissing and buzzing immediately went away and its dead quiet. This switch is an input level switch and undoubtedly having it on Hi causes the G3 to not recognize the Bose properly.
There is a thread about the Aux input problem and I think they have it diagnosed. Its going to take some software manipulations. I listen to my G3 in my car through Bluetooth so I do not experience any issues on that end like the folks in that thread. As for headphones, I am not having the issue with my 2 sets.
Just a little update...
Updated to V10E, issue seems to be fixed...
No more buzzing noise in my left channel...

I have this problem when I plug into the car aux port (noise in between tracks). Just a quick question, which icon should appear in the NB if I plug in an audio cable from the Aux socket?

I picked up a D855 V10d (Telstra branded Australia) two days ago and noticed this yesterday myself.
I have Shure SE425 canals and they make the static noise when idle, very noticeable on these headphones. When music or audio is playing the static goes away. This is of course only when the charger is plugged in.
I tested it with the LG headphones that came with the phone and the noise is still there but softer, grabbed my Samsung headphones that came with my S4 and couldn't hear anything. I believe it's due to the resistance of the headphones.
Another test was to turn off the phone and charge it with the headphones plugged in, no static noise if I did this.
Going to exchange the phone today as it's unacceptable, I primarily use it at work to listen to music and often charge it at the same time.

[Q] Jaybird Bluebuds X problems on Galaxy S6?

Anyone having any Bluetooth issues with the S6? In particular, with the Jaybird Bluebud X earbuds? I emailed Jaybird support to see if they are aware of any issues. Based on my research, I cant tell for sure if there is a known issue or not.
Basically, heres whats happening. This is the first time Im using a Bluetooth headset but pretty confident this isnt a settings issue.
Bluetooth pairs fine. But if my phone is not within a foot or two, or not in direct line-of-sight of the earbuds, the sound cuts in and out, or totally out. So if I put the phone in my pocket, I lose sound. If I hold the phone behind my back, I lose sound. Bluetooth stays connected, but the sound goes out abruptly. It doesnt get distorted or faint, it just cuts out. If I bring the phone back in line-of-sight, or close to the phone it works great. But it kind of defeats the purpose. I had to hold the phone at my chest on my walk to work this morning in order for it to work right. If I cover the top half of the phone, it goes out (eerily similar to the old iPhone issue with the antenna, if you touch the frame a certain way it seems to go out). But sometimes depending how I touch the controller-side earbud, it goes out. Its as if anything that blocks the line-of-sight or sensors on the phone/earbud, it blocks sound. I tested this in Safe Mode as well and the problem is still there.
For whats its worth, I have a Jambox at home and the S6 connects fine with it, no matter where I am in the apartment or how Im holding the phone. So I really doubt this is a problem with the phone but who knows. I have my old S4 on KitKat at home that I will test with tonight as well.
Some new information after some testing at the office this morning.
Tried the earbuds with a Galaxy Note 4, and iPhone 4S, and the same problem is happening. So thankfully it doesnt look like an issue with the S6. I'll be sending these earbuds back for a new pair and report. If problems continue, obviously I'll be trying another kind of earbuds.
Stopped and picked up the Plantronics Backbeat Go 2. So far, these are working perfectly though they may not be quite as loud. But its good to know it doesnt appear to be a problem with the phone. Must be some kind of compatibility issue with the Bluebuds. I have a replacement set of Bluebuds on the way so Ill report back if they work any better than the first pair.
My bluebud x does the same. Walked over a foot away and the music stops. Walk back closer to the phone music comes back on.
Received my replacement Bluebuds and the same problem occurs. So there must be some kind of compatibility issue.
Jaybird says they are unaware of a known issue but I find that hard to believe.
So Ill be using the Plantronics for now since they seem to work fine.
Samsung S6 issues
I recently purchased the JayBird BlueBud X and literally had the same issue. It connected and paired perfectly fine, but it only lasted for about 10 seconds before the sound went away. You could press any button on the BlueBuds and it would start up again for a few seconds and the sound would go away again. It paired perfectly with my sister's Samsung Galaxy S4 and my friend's iPhone 5. I called their technical support and they suggested, I send it in and get a replacement. I wasn't having any of that BS. I just returned them. Sadly, they were the most comfortable earbuds, I have ever worn. There is some compatibility issues that need looking into.

The same thing happens with my LG Tones, the antenna seems to be in the left side on them and having to go through my body to the phone in my pocket is just too much. It's been an issue with both phones I've used it with, the S6 and the S4 before it. Bluetooth in low power devices just seems to have to be super weak.
Has anyone found a fix for this problem as yet? I have the same issue with my bluebuds when I am at the gym as well.
You don't know how much effort I put into figuring out it was the phone and not the bluebudsx. Ended up returning and getting G new headphones 3 times, before sending in my phone to be replaced. Figured out that the new phone was still dropping the connection too, so it had to be the phone and not the headphones. It really sucks because I run twice daily, and Bluetooth made things so much easier. It looks like just bad hardware from Samsung, so there won't be a fix coming. Just gonna have to used wired headsets again...
Oh and for the record, I'm not having issues with distance causing drops. The drops occur randomly after usage, anywhere from 5 minutes to 6p minutes into my run. So everyday is a new day when I go running, since im always worrying about when my music will cut out and mess up my rhythm. Tested bluebudsx with my N5, Note 4, and EVO LTE. None cut out randomly during runs. So I came to the conclusion it has to be bad hardware on the S6.
glad I saw this, I was considering these for jogging/exercising, I'm presently using a Samsung HS3000 with a pair of Beats UR Beats, guess I'll stick with that combo

I have the LG tone pros and same thing happens to me. I also have a pair of Plantronics Backbeat fits and it also does the same. The phone has poor Bluetooth as well as antenna. My signal sucks most of the time

Xtrestolite is a Rom for S6, right? That makes me think that it maybe a software issue with the phone not a hardware issue.
I'm wondering if it has to do with 5.0. 2 Android. Has anyone flashed the new 5. 1.1 release? If it is software that's causing issues, maybe something was changed between versions. I would test it myself but I need to stay on 5.0.2 for personal reasons.

Just got my jaybirds and my S6 (G925T) is running 5.1.1 and is having the same issue. Music will play for 30sec-1min but then it cuts out. The bluebuds x work fine on my Nexus 7 which is also running 5.1.1

It seems like I was able to fix the issue for my S6. I enabled Bluetooth HCI snoop log in the Developer options and then copied the file (btsnoop_hci.log) to my computer and found in Wireshark that my Logitech bluetooth adapter was showing up a lot even though it was not paired to my phone. I disconnected the adapter and found that I can play music without the dropped audio. I'd recommend everyone to take a look at their logs and see if there is any weird traffic from other bluetooth devices. It's somewhat disconcerting that a device not even paired to my phone could cause problems with the headphones.

Interesting. I'll try that, but I'm thinking I have a different problem since I can be walking around or running outside and connections will still drop randomly.
I am having the same issue on Samsung Galaxy S4 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge +. Soooo annoying. The only pattern that I was able to figure out is that sound will cut out every time there is a Bluetooth interference. Even when there are no other Bluetooth devices within miles. When ever you have any other apps running in the background that try to connect to Bluetooth devices sound will cut out. For example when u have some fitness tracking app trying to connect to a Bluetooth device that is not with you. It seems that there are few different ways that your sound cuts out and all has to do with Bluetooth interference or searching. It would be awesome if someone has a solution.
Samsung GS6 and Jaybird Bluebuds X connecting
Hello all,
I was having the same issue with my Samsung GS6 ATT running 5.1.1.
I would put the phone in my pocket or walk a few feet away and the signal would drop out (skip).
Reading all the posts on here stating it wasn't the buds I tried the one thing that possibly on mine can cause the bad signal.
I removed my case! (OBLIQ case)
Since doing that I can walk 30 ft away without being in line of sight of my phone with no drops.
I'm having no issues during training, with my new pair of Jaybird Bluebuds X and my Galaxy S6 running Stock 5.1.1. BTW I'm using a Ringle SLIM case on my S6.
It's there any way to show battery percentage on an Android Phone? . This is possible on IOS.
Excellent troubleshooting, icj217 - I experienced this same issue to where the audio would drop between every 5-8 mins on my GS6 using the Bluebuds X (regardless of distance). I've cleared all the paired devices (including the Bluebuds X) on my GS6 and re-paired the headphones and they seem to be working fine now. I'm wondering what's going to happen once I re-pair all my other bluetooth devices. If I inherit the problem again, this will be just another reason to dump the GS6 and go back to my Nexus 5.

Headphone Jack Inconsistent

I got a brand new pair of earbuds (Brainwavz Delta something) and plugged them into my HTC 10.. they work fine for a bit then if I move the phone just right (or sometimes do nothing) the music stops, there's no longer a headphone icon in the status bar, and I have to unplug and plug them back in.. any idea what this may be caused by?
My Xiaomi Piston 3s worked fine with it, they just died in one ear :/
Edit** the headphones work fine with my Nexus 7, so it's not an issue of compatibility... unless the fact that it's a 3-ring plug (which should be fine, so were the pistons)
Same issue with headphone jack
I was using a pair of Fischer Audio Consonance Pro IEM's on my M8 and now 10 and experiencing the same issues. Songs skipping all over the place, starting, pausing, the OK Google app starting up and saying it couldn't hear what I said, or picking up something from what I am listening to. It is maddening. I love this phone so far, but this issue will drive me crazy if I can't be easily fixed.
It's as if the jack/plug is coming loose, since it fails to recognize the headphones until I unplug it and replug. It's very annoying, and seems to happen only if I tip the phone just the right way :/ hope it's not a hardware defect...
I have a feeling this is because of the edges, if you look at the headphones Jack it isn't flush the edge goes in a little thus you don't get 100% covered 3.5m lead.
Does seem worse in some headphones though

Not really, the best way would be to get a very small 3.5m extension cable, one that isn't so sensitive,but you would only find out through trial and error. Or buy another set of headphones. For example my bose qc25 aren't to bad but a cheap sony set I have if I move abit they crackle.
Is the one bit of design htc messed up. If they would of moved it a few mm to the front and problem solved.
Surprised more people aren't moaning about it as one big points is the 24 bit audio.
Can we confirm that this is an issue across all HTC 10's and not just an unlucky few? I thought my phone might've been defected. 2 Beats headphones I have (got both as gifts) do not seem to work properly. But if I use other a plantronics headset I have, works just dandy. I'm afraid to buy any headphones not knowing which would or wouldn't work. This is not a good thing at all.
I have a Sol republic headphone with mic integrated and doesn't work properly on mine either. However, a friend of mine has a sol republic headphone too, and it works. I bought a panasonic tcm 125 and it works really well.. so IDK, I'm going to change the cable on my sol rep to see if that fix the problem.
Might be headphones with integrated control/mic which has the extra ring :/
Question: when does the issue happen for everyone else? Mine almost always acts up when I turn the screen off, maybe that has something to do with it
I can confirm this is NOT a wide spread issue, I even dropped my phone, not low enough to hang on the cord but enough movement to yank on it, I have messed with it, played around to see if I can make it have an issue, but no issue exists, its either an unlucky few or your headphones.
The only issue I have not related to this is my headphones I tested, the "Audio Technica ATH-M50" jack is too big to fit in the headphone jack while my phone has its case on (Spigen Neo Hybrid Crystal), taking the case off solves it, just barely not big enough cut out on the case for that model of headphones, regardless they don't sound as good as my IEM's so F em! lol
Have you guys tried other headphones or AUX cords? I don't have this issue anywhere, not via Headphones, not at my work on are speaker system, and not in my car via AUX.
So the actual shape or design of the headphone jack it self is NOT flawed like I noticed some have speculated.
I've been using my m50x or bose qc20's. Both work fine with no issues.
Pretty sure it's headphones with integrated controls for Apple devices that don't work. My jbl reflects which I use for running (3 rings) don't work if pushed all the way in. But my bose sound true work just fine. And the bose just so happen to be made for samsung and android devices. If I had some apple earpods around I'd test it but I'm thinking it's just headphones with integrated controls exclusively for Apple that might have issues.

Wish that were the case.. mine are specifically Android remote headphones :/
Experiencing similar issues with my Sennheiser Urbanite XL headphones. Seemingly random moments where the headphones seem to just disconnect with the slightest movement (or non-movement).

Hmmm you're right. My sisters htc 10 seemingly all headphones just do not to work. Might be a small batch issue. I'm thinking about exchanging out for another one because I have the yellow band issue on the bottom of the screen anyways. Really don't want to play the exchange game like I did with the nexus 6p especially since HTC doesn't have the same support Google does. Gonna exchange if I get a bad one twice I'm just returning this phone all together. Hate to see it go because this phone is gorgeous.

Man I'm past my return date... and I'm not ponying up $100+ for a replacement through Verizon insurance

Ah I have the unlocked model and I modded it to use on Verizon. I had no problem replacing phones through verizon though. Switched out my s6 edge 4 times for free due to display and speaker issues. Of course you end up getting their certified like new device which may or may not bother you. But if it doesn't you can just go to a corporate store and show them some headphones won't work. Most likely they'll ship you one free of charge.

I'm not a huge fan of Verizon anyway.. parents are just too afraid to lose the coverage (T-Mobile is top of my list but they're not so convinced)
I accidentally whacked my headphone jack very lightly with the tip of my finger and now my headphones seem to randomly disconnect. It works fine with my aux cable, but with my headphones with a mic it seems this happens.
