Headphone Output Buzzing - faulty? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Received my Nexus 7 here in the UK yesterday. Very happy with everything other than that when I connect it to an audio output such as my Jambox it let's out a continuous low hum when no music is playing, regardless of whether the charger is connected or not. There is no noise when using headphones however. I have ensured that the jacks are connected properly and pressed in as far as they will go. I've tried two cables - one from my Jambox and another from my Nokia 360 speaker and both work fine with my HTC One - no buzz whatsoever.
Can someone test this out on their 2013 Nexus and tell me if they have the same problem? It isn't the end of the world as I don't use direct audio connections like this often but will obviously get it replaced regardless if it is a definite fault.
Thanks everyone.

Audio issue in car using Line Out input in BMW

Has anyone else out there connected their M8 to their car using 3.5mm and noticed a strange whining and hissing noise prior to any actual audio being played?
The noise is very apparent, but as soon as you start some audio (Spotify/Deezer/Google/HTC player) its fine, and that includes any quiet bits in a song. Its when there is no audio being pushed out there seems to be this problem,
I havent noticed it on my headphones, but cant confirm as I left them in the office last week. Anyone else had a similar issue?

Your cable must be loose or bad
Try a better shielded cable. Also, turn volume to max on the phone to get a better signal and adjust desired volume in the car.

I have tried several cables (one pro series) and it makes no difference.
I have only just upgraded to this phone a week ago from my Galaxy Note 3, which did not have any issues at all.

Are you charging your phone while it's connected?
Try it without power or with an external battery.

Unfortunately not, I would expect some interference if I had connected it to the 12V charger, but its just playing as a phone with only the audio lead connected, nothing else!
Most annoying is that you have to pay £240 more to BMW for audio bluetooth.... grrrrrrr

I am an installer at a car audio shop. We like to hardwire bluetooth audio adapters to the factory aux. Your local reputable shop should be able to do it in your bmw no problem. Use this part, as cheaper ones tend to have noise. This has fm mod which you will not be using, but has true analog out that they can hardwire to the back of your aux jack where nothing is seen. At my shop, I charge $100 labor and $100 for the part.

Yes on some occasions i have experienced the same noise.
Its not a cable issue as i have checked grounding, used several cables, and tested with other devices.
It also clears up on its on once you use an app to play music.
I use siriusxm, play music, and pandora..

[Q] Low Mic volume when plugging in earbuds

During either a skype, or google hangouts call, if I plug a pair of earbuds into my Nexus 7 (2013) the internal microphone level drops significantly (around 70-80%). This makes internet calls while wearing earbuds impossible. Using the speakers everything works fine, but this leads to feedback noise.
Through a couple hours of research I heard of a similar, but different, issue occurring with Nexus 4 phones in inline headsets would be very quiet. But this issue is different, as it happens with any pair of regular earbuds and headphones.
I tested during a skype call, as soon as I plugged in my earbuds the microphone volume dropped. Once I unplugged them the microphone level went back to a normal level.
Has anyone else dealt with this problem? My brother owns a nexus 7 as well and has the EXACT same issue. Might there be any patch or fix that my googling missed? Thank you,

Headphones buzzing sound

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this but I have a buzzing sound in my headphones in the left ear. It is fairly loud when the phone is idling. When I switch apps or screens it goes away momentarily then starts again. I have tested it in the music app and it does not appear to be an issue while playing music. I checked some very low volume sources and its not there. Still I wonder if I have a bad unit or have something activated doing this. I am completely stock new AT&T LG G3.
Update: After testing a few more sets of headphones, this only happens on my Bose QC15s which have the noise cancellation. Its interesting though that the Bose are dead silent on my Galaxy S5 and my wifes iphone. I tried both cables with them (since one is designed for idevices) but it doesn't make a difference. Not sure what interference they are picking up but I think I will take them to an AT&T store this weekend and see if it does it on their display models.
Is it anything like...

I think it's the same thing. With the Bose it's like a humming buzzing sound. I don't hear it at all with the Apple $79 IEMs. They are listed at 23ohm impedance. With mine it's as if theorizing switches on and off though. I can switch apps or play music and its dead quiet after I immediately pause but then it clicks back to buzzing.

I was almost returning my G3 and i was like "Hell no, again..." , i have exchanged my nexus 5, 5 times! and still has the same problem!
One interesting thing I will note guys, when I plug my headphones in that I hear a buzzing sound, I get the headphone icon in the NB. When I plug in the Apple headphones that I cannot hear the buzzing sound at all I get the headset icon in the NB.
I have read this is a Kit Kat 4.4 issue but I did not have it at all with a Galaxy S5. I am hoping it will be fixed soon but I am thinking about grabbing some different headphones anyway.
I have the buzzing just listening through the earpiece on the phone itself, no headphones required. I have the T-Mobile D851 model. So one would theorize that this is also using power since it's powering the earpiece to make noise. Some kind of electrical interference in the phone itself would be my guess.
Hi. Just got my UK spec G3 in the last few hours and I've just come across what I believe is the same problem. There is a distinct buzzing/crackling/static sounds when I have headphones connected via the 3.5mm jack. The sound is only present when I have certain media playing (using Spotify at the moment). I only notice this when connected using the jack and not when using my Bluetooth receiver (HTC BH S600). I did hear this while using two pairs of earphones while they were directly plugged into the device, the LG QuadBeat 2s from my G3 and the in box headphones from my old HTC One M7.
This has to be a software problem. I was just testing again and the buzzing becomes stronger in any app I use just when I touch the screen and scroll. I hope this is an easy fix in a custom rom. Also as I reported earlier, I do not have the buzzing during playback. I know this because I have tested some very quiet tracks and also checked on some very long gaps between songs. If it is humming it is much quieter. Only when I exit out of the Music app it is immediately quiet then it clicks in at about 2-3 seconds. I have also had a few quirks today where my headphones come up with the Aux Icon then after pausing the Music app a few times they switch to the Headset icon.
Not really sure what is going on but there has to be a software fix.
I will say the Music app sounds unbelievable with Viper4Android installed. It definitely has more oomph than with Play Music. Comparing the same tracks in both apps back and forth, the Music app is cleaner. Not sure what LG has done in that app but I like it.
I only get a buzz during charging. Disconnect the charger and it goes away. Most devices I've owned have the same issue recently. S4, S5, note 3, moto maxx, moto X, nexus 5 have all done it to me but only while charging
I have a really nasty popping crackling sound in between tracks when using aux in my car, but headphones no issues... Never had that problem at all on my nexus 5 so it can't be my head unit in my car
I wanted to post an update to this problem. I originally reported I had this issue with my Bose QC15 headphones. I do not have this issue with my Apple In Ear headphones. Today I was diagnosing things again and had been listening the the Apples. The Apples always correctly have the headphone icon show up in the Notification bar. When I plug in the Bose, I always get the Aux icon. This got me to thinking about if the cable was different. I pulled the cable out of the Bose and on the end that inserts into the headphones themselves there is a Hi Low switch. Mine was on high. When I switched it to Low, the G3 started to recognize them as headphones and not show the Aux icon. The hissing and buzzing immediately went away and its dead quiet. This switch is an input level switch and undoubtedly having it on Hi causes the G3 to not recognize the Bose properly.
There is a thread about the Aux input problem and I think they have it diagnosed. Its going to take some software manipulations. I listen to my G3 in my car through Bluetooth so I do not experience any issues on that end like the folks in that thread. As for headphones, I am not having the issue with my 2 sets.
Just a little update...
Updated to V10E, issue seems to be fixed...
No more buzzing noise in my left channel...

I picked up a D855 V10d (Telstra branded Australia) two days ago and noticed this yesterday myself.
I have Shure SE425 canals and they make the static noise when idle, very noticeable on these headphones. When music or audio is playing the static goes away. This is of course only when the charger is plugged in.
I tested it with the LG headphones that came with the phone and the noise is still there but softer, grabbed my Samsung headphones that came with my S4 and couldn't hear anything. I believe it's due to the resistance of the headphones.
Another test was to turn off the phone and charge it with the headphones plugged in, no static noise if I did this.
Going to exchange the phone today as it's unacceptable, I primarily use it at work to listen to music and often charge it at the same time.

Auxiliary Output Issues

I connect my LG G4 to the auxiliary jack in my car stereo (stock stereo in a 2007 Saab 9-3) with a standard 3.5 mm male to male audio cable. The process to get the audio to come through my speakers is rather cumbersome.
I have to follow this procedure:
1. Unplug the audio cable from the aux jack in the car stereo
2. Plug other end of the audio cable into the phone
3. Open Google Music and press play on the music I want to listen to
4. Plug audio cable back into the aux jack on stereo
5. Change stereo from Radio/band to Aux
I have to do this every single time, and if my music happens to reach the end of the album or playlist to where it is no longer playing anything, I have to repeat the above steps. When I had an HTC One M7 and M8 I didn't have to do any of this. I could just connect my phone and press play...no problems.
I really hate having to do this for two reasons. First, if while driving, I decide to listen to music on my phone rather than the radio, it really distracting and unsafe to mess with while driving. Second, I'm afraid with all the plugging/unplugging on my car stereo is going to wear out the aux jack and degrade the audio quality.
Anyone else having this issue with their G4? Any suggestions? I know someone with a G3 and they don't have any issues like this when plugging into their car stereo, although they have a different car, but I don't think it would really matter.

I do car electronics install for a living... I'm not familiar with how Saab does aux (I don't see many saabs), but in most vehicles there is a 'sense' wire in the aux plug. You will know if it has one because without a cable plugged in, you won't be able to select the aux source. In your case, the residual connection from your phone's fm radio (uses headphone cable as antenna) might be interfering with the 'sense' wire in the aux plug. I would suggest trying a different aux cable, like one with 4 bands instead of 3. They are typically used to carry audio as well as video. If that doesn't work, amazon has these universal Bluetooth receivers that plug into the aux port, which for sure will do what you need it to.
Example of 4 band cable-

The Bluetooth reciever would be my choice though-

The stereo in the model year range of my Saab is basically the same that GM put in Pontiacs and other makes in the 2007 year range. GM owned Saab at the time. I know someone with a Ponitac G6 (I think that is model, it is definitely a Pontiac) and I remember remarking that he had the same stereo as me. The buttons and interface look nearly identical. If I have the aux cable plugged into the stereo I can select the Aux source, even if I don't have anything else connected. If no cable is plugged into the stereo, I cannot select the Aux source.
What I don't understand is why it worked fine with no weird issues with the HTC One M8, but it doesn't work with the G4. Sounds like a software bug to me.
As far as I know Verizon disables the FM receiver in the G4 just like they did in the HTC One M8 and basically all of their phones. It's still in physically in the phone, so maybe it can still interfere in some way, but if it worked on the M8 I don't understand why the G4 is different in this respect.
I'll try a different cable and/or a 4 band cable though and see if it makes a difference.
I used my G4 in my car (2009 RAV4) without issues. I didn't do anything special, just plugged it in then started playing the podcast app. I don't recall if the sequence mattered at all. I typically plug the cable into the phone first, then start playing the audio.
I believe I have a "sense wire" that esmenikmatixx referred to, as I believe my car will not let me select Aux if nothing is plugged into the car. I have an audio cable that I always leave plugged into the car's port, to reduce wear on the jack.
I didn't try the music app in the car, unfortunately. FWIW, Google Music was fine for me with headphones, no weird issues. I have Verizon, but I have since returned my G4, so I can't check anything else for you, sorry.
So I decided to get a bluetooth adapter that plugs into the Aux input on my car stereo and it works great with the exception that the audio volume is ridiculously low. I max out the bluetooth volume on my phone as well as the separate volume on the bluetooth adapter and it is really quiet. Turn up my car stereo you say, but ah, I have to turn my car stereo up to near maximum as well to get a decent volume that could be heard while driving. When I turn the car stereo volume up this loud the speakers become overrun with static and it makes it sound like I'm listening on an FM channel that barely comes in.
I've noticed lower volume over bluetooth on my LG Tone bluetooth earbuds as well. I used these the LG Tone's with my HTC One and had no problems with volume levels. The first time I connected my LG Tones to my LG G4, I had to nearly max out the volume on the Tones (despite having the LG G4 bluetooth volume maxed as well) to hear audio at the same level that I previously did on my HTC One.
So bluetooth is not going to be an answer, the quality is too poor. I dug around on the Play Store and found an app called "Soundabout". The app will allow you to force your audio out through whatever source you want even when the output device is not connected. I set it to force audio through wired headset and it works for the most part. I don't have to do any weird unplugging and re-plugging of audio cable just plug and play. The only thing is that sometimes when I connect the phone and press play on a song you can tell that Soundabout is fighting with the crap software on the phone to force the audio to the wired headset (wired speakers) because the audio will cut in and out and then stop. After pressing play enough times that it wins out, it will finally go through the wired connection. The one downside is that if I'm out of my car and want to listen to something through the speaker on the phone I have to go back into the Soundabout app and change the output to "let the app decide".
So, I'm 100% sure it is something with the software on the phone. There is little doubt. I have no problems with any other phone connected to my car stereo. It's not like I have some aftermarket stereo. This stereo is as stock and basic as you can get. When they designed the audio controls and functionality on this phone they didn't put a lot of thought into it. It's frustrating because otherwise this is a great phone I just hate messing with this stupid audio issue. All I can do is hope it's patched. There are no built-in options on the phone to tweak audio settings.
I can't imagine I'm the only one having problems like this.
LG Customer Support has been predictably unhelpful. I may just return this and get a different phone if I still can.

I plugged it in with an audio cable to my girlfriend's Mazda and it works fine. Guess I'm S.O.L. Highly unlikely LG would patch this if it's software due to being so isolated. Would be interested to hear from those with a mid to late 2000's GM vehicle since they all have basically the same stereo as Saab. Maybe it is an issue with my stereo, but I don't understand then why other phones work just fine.
Frustrating because there is nothing I can do to fix it other than spend a bunch of money to replace my stereo which I can't afford, or spend an equal amount of a bunch of money to pay off the G4 so that I can get a different phone to then make more payments on, and Verizon absolutely, no exceptions, refuses to exchange it for something like a Galaxy, Note 4, anything different than a G4 because I'm 5 days past the 14 day return period. Guess I only have myself to kick in the ass for not doing sooner, but I wish someone at Verizon was kindhearted enough to make an exception.
Sorry for venting.

Not yet, but I will. I've been reading on another website that the G3, last year's model, had this exact same problem. There's a thread with tons of people reporting the same problem. Some used a cable like this one which was suggested earlier and it solved their issue. Suppose I should have tried that to begin with. I'm going to try this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K36XWG0?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00
I'll report back if it worked or not at least so that if others come across this they have a starting point.
I got the 4 pole to 3 pole audio cable today and it doesn't work. I tried flipping the cable around and it still didn't work. I don't know what else to try, anyone have suggestions?
Kevin 82485, late on this thread but I just purchased a 2007 Saab 9-3 and I'm having the same issues with my LG G4. I just downloaded the soundabout app you mentioned, but have you found a better solution than that?
2007 saab 9-5 and LG Aristo on Metro PCS. Same issue as OP. Its definitely a LG issue, wifes Galaxy works without issues, no fiddling with the cable and audio pausing and plugging unplugging plugging and trying to play audio. Good phone, garbage audio coding.

Anyone hearing a noisy headphone jack?

I often plug my phone in to my stereo system using the headphone jack.
I've noticed that when the phone is not actually playing something I can hear some little crackles and occasionally some buzzes.
I've tried it plugged in to several sources and they all show the same bahaviour, so it's not the stereo, it's the phone.
Anyone else have a noisy headphone jack?
Did you try all of them with the same wire? That could be the cause of the noise.
I've only tried mine with a wired headset and didn't notice any noise.

Good question. Yes, I tried two different 1/4 inch to RCA cables and also my 1/4 inch to cassette adapter. Also tried a different phone with the same cables and had silence.
This only happens to me when I plug my AUX cable in my car into my 5X, but it doesn't happen when I put my headphones into it.
I can hear an audible noise every few seconds when I have my headphones on and nothing playing on the phone.. No issues with those headphones plugged into other devices.
Also, my output volume is low. Need to crank my stereo up in my truck when this is connected via aux. Full volume on both the phone and truck is equal to about half when using my nexus 6.. Huge disappointment.
I have this same issue and I've also noticed that the device does not get loud enough when plugged into my cars stereo on my S5 I can the volume all the way up on the phone and keep the stereo at 25 and it would be loud enough for me but now with my 5x I have the phones volume all the way up and the stereo set at 38 "witch is the max volume for the system" and I'm still left sometimes with wanting the music to be louder so hopefully this can be fixed with a software update

Same experience here with the volume in my truck compared to my old phones
I've noticed this happening on my phone as well. It does it with two different aux cables (not when I plug in headphones, though, oddly). My roommate's 5x does it, too. Turning the screen on stops the crackling. I recorded a video of it (I apparently can't post outside links so you'll have to build the url yourself): youtube . com/watch?v=-RObC7bZcQs
The volume seems fine though.
Edit: I received a replacement phone yesterday, and it has this issue as well.

Yes, I can report the exact same behaviour.
If I put a different phone on the exact same setup, there is complete silence when that phone is not playing back audio.
Anyone find a solution to this?
I get a pop in the silent gap between every song on Pandora. I am using a Bose Q15 noise cancelling headphones and nexus 5x with marshmellow. With new batteries in the headphones and low volume 15%..
I've been noticing the same issue. It only happens when no audio is playing back and the screen is locked. When I unlock the device there's no popping until it locks again.
