Hi guys,
My phone is rooted, don't have S-OFF though but I don't think I need it for what I want to do.
I installed Titanium Backup (Root access OK), did a backup of all my apps and started to delete the unwanted ones. So I select Twitter for instance and click on Uninstall.
I get the notification "Un-install complete for "Twitter" and it appears crossed out on the list in TB.
But once I reboot the phone, everything is back as before step 1....
Any clue on what to do to make it work? Is it related to S-OFF?
Any tips would be helpful!
Thanks,
Tomfun

What rom you are using ?
Maybe you don't have access to system ( related to s-on )
Some apps is not placed in /system/app or /priv-app
It's placed in /system/vendor/app just delete the folder if it's there and reboot if this doesn't solve your issue
You may need to flash custom kernel which allow you to delete system apps

I am using the stock ROM 6.12.401.4
How can I flash the kernel?
If you are on the stock ROM, but with root; this alone does not give you permission to delete system apps (or other system changes within OS). This is counterintuitive, and the reason is that the system partition is write protected on this device, even with root.
As mentioned in the previous response, you need to apply a kernel mod to remove the write protection. If on a Sense Marshmallow ROM, you can use the wp_mod posted with the ROM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/development/rom-stock-unlocked-developer-sense-7-t3262894
If not on MM, or not on Sense, you'll need a different wp_mod. But I'm just guessing, as you haven't given any details.
As always, make a TWRP backup of your current setup, before applying the mod, in case anything goes wrong.

Hi,
I am new to flashing and rooting and have some basic doubts. Does mods survive new flashing? Say if I installed some apps via recovery, do they go away when a new ROM is flashed? Also is there a way to remove them without flashing a new ROM?
For mods yes you have to flash them again when installing a different ROM. If it's a new version of the same ROM, you can choose to either perform a full wipe (recommended) or just install over the old ROM.

If its a new version of the same ROM, can I selectively decide which all mods to preserve? I recently installed a font mod. Is there a way to selective remove it alone when flashing.
Is it enough if I manually go and delete the files which was there in the mod or is there a better way?
For fonts you can just delete the font file. Also there are many apps on the market that automate the process of installing/uninstalling fonts

if you don't perform full wipe and install same ROM, they may survive though it is recommended to perform full wipe if ur ROM has new kernel
& if you are flashing different ROM, mods will not be there
few mods are system wide like Zero's Sound Enhancer... you can't uninstall or delete such mods
So if my understanding is correct, all system contents (mods and anything I put to system memory but not the memory card accessible to us) are removed when a wipe happens. And it also removes existing apps. But if I upgrade an existing rom without a wipe my existing mods and apps will remain as it is.
I am trying to figure out a proper strategy for removing existing mods and upgrading roms. Kindly bear with my noob questions.

What I do is a do a Titanium Backup of all apps, do a full wipe then restore the apps. Mods aren't listed as apps so they do not appear in Titanium so whatever mods you installed will be gone. I'm assuming this is what you want to do.

As ArmedandDangerous said use Titanium backup for backing all your apps and data, u can select which apps to backup and which not its up to you
And never forget to make a Nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM or upgrading one...
its very much required...
If you want to know how to use Titanium backup, check Cursed4eva channel on youtube and check his video on Titanium backup, its very good
Okay my question is:
Is it possible to go from an unrooted phone with the whole software stock to a custom ROM, while keeping your data (apps, appdata, settings, sms, etc.)? If yes, how?
I'm on software version HTC WWE Europe 3.12.405.1, and I stored all my apps and photos etc on my SD-card.
I already know that the easyest way to instal another bootloader (CWM) is the AAHK. I downloaded it. But it will perform a downgrade resulting in loss of data.
Also while flashing a ROM you must reset the phone.
What I don't understand is this: you don't need to reset the SD-card, but the new ROM won't recognise the apps on your SD-card, so do you need to delete all those files then?
I know that what I'm probably asking a very nooby question, but I really hope that somebody can help me out here.
Thanks in advance, koningjim!

Take a look at this thread. Someone else had similar questions recently.
If by apps on the sdcard you mean apps you backed up with GoBackup or MyBackup or something similar, you will need to reinstall that backup app from the Play Store and use that app to restore your apps from the sdcard. If you mean with apps2sd, they're usually saved in a folder in the sdcard called .android_secure, and I know that 4ext recovery (and maybe others) wipes that folder when a new ROM is flashed. If the recovery doesn't, I would guess that it's wise to wipe it yourself.
Thank you very much for your response! This answers some of my questions, but not all. I hope the rest will be answered too.

I'm assuming you are taking about the option that Android gives you to move apps to sd. I don't expect you to know this yet, since you haven't rooted yet, but before installing any ROM, you should do a full wipe. On my recovery, which is 4ext (and which I highly recommend you use after AAHK installs CWM recovery), it automatically wipes .android_secure (where the apps2sd are saved) in the course of a full wipe. If you choose another recovery, and it does not do so, I would recommend that you delete it yourself.

Not quite sure what you are asking. If you are talking about just the apk file, there shouldn't be any problems. No need to format the sd card.
OOw, I think I get it now! The apps are stored in .android_secure and not in another place in the SD-card. I already backed up my contacts, smses etc. So I guess there's no way to keep your appdata? Because you need root for that and for root you need to downgrade, which resets the phone?

Just to clarify, the .android_secure folder is for apps moved to the sd using the Android OS's apps2sd capability. If you're referring to another method (like Titanium Backup or GoBackup or something), that's different. Those backup apps can back up your apps, but not app data, to the sdcard; you would then reinstall them using the same backup app once the new ROM is installed.
If you need to downgrade to root, I don't know of a method to keep your app data, since the downgrade would wipe the OS before you had the root capability necessary to back up app data. There might be one, but I don't know of one.
OK, nice! Now I'm rooted and downgraded. However, now I want to install 4ext Recovery. So I downloaded the 4extRecoveryUpdater.apk from their website. But my phone won't open and install it. When I click on it in downloads it just says "Can't open this file".
Please help?!!?!

Make sure "install from unknown sources" is checked in Settings -> Security. Try opening it from another application, like a file manager.
Oh well.. this sucks! Just one day after I rooted and lost all my data, a new version of Titanium Backup comes out that can back-up app-data without root

Dear users,
I recently got the update to 4.2.2 with HTC Sense 5 (i downloaded it of course).
My phone was rooted, so i flashed the stock recovery back. I also had some system bloatware apps removed using Titanium Backup. I also restored them, finally i created an root backup with Voodo Rootkeeper.
The download was complete so it wen't in to "updating" mode. And about half way i get a phone with a red triangle in the center. The update fails.
I have installed Avast! Anti-Theft with Hardreset protection. Do i need to turn that off?
I also have installed some mods, do i need to also delete them?
Btw. Avast! Anti-Theft Hardreset protection has also some files flashed trough CMW Recovery.
What did i do wrong?
I have Nandroid Manager installed.
Which images do i need to restore without losing all my data, and still successfully update my phone to 4.2.2?
Big thanks in advance for all the help!
Tim
First, wrong section. This thread belongs to Q&A...
Removing system apps will certain caused OTA failure, but this should not your case if you had restore them correctly.
Hmm.. did antivirus running when you aplly OTA? Avast! Anti-Theft has nothing to do on failure OTA.
The main culprit most probably be the mods. Most mods changes system/framewark files. Don't try to deleting them directly unless you can identify the changes and revert to the stock version correctly
Also, no one here on xda can tell how many nandroid images you own and when you backup them. The are several ways to get back to stock and applying OTA and non of them will cause the lost of apps data. There are also multiple ways to backup your apps data too. Just remebered don't restore system related data after OTA.
Root backup is not useful for the HTC One X. You need to fully remove root (delete the su binary, the super user apk). I don't know if the mods cause the problem of the update. You may better remove them. I recommend you to backup important datas (telephone, sms...) and then fully wipe your phone. Did you make a nandroid backup before you installed any mods? If yes restore this backup using advanced mode in CWM and only choose system restore. If you don't have the backup, look for RUU suits your phone CID number and Android version and look for tutorials to make your phone completely stock. It's also recommended to remove this Avast thing.

I'll remove the full root access, can i flash it back after the update?
Yes i made a backup before any mods, will this also remove the SU binary's etc.?
And do i need to remove busybox too?
Thanks,
Tim
EDIT/UPDATE:
It looks like the restore system only in the advanced restore settings did the trick. Thanks for the suggestion!
I'll keep this in mind next time i'm going to flash something. Is there a tool that backups the things that are going to be flashed before the actual mod is flashed?
Thanks,
Tim
Never seen a tool like this. It is really only your job to remember to do a nandroid backup before flashing any mod. This is a must. It is a rule!

I totally agree with that, and i do it all the time. Thanks for the support. Now i'll try to install root again. Keep you updated!!
I think I have the same issue as tim687 ...
I want to revert back to the stock HTC Sense OS.
Before installing CM I made a nandroid backup and now I restored that backup (tried normal backup and system backup in the advanced options).
Now I would like to install the update by HTC, but when installing the update I am getting
E: unkown volume for path [internalsdcard: download/ota_endeavor....[filename}.zip
E: cant mount internalsdcard: download/ota_endeavor....[filename}.zip
Installation aborted.
Any help please?
Flash back the stock HTC recovery. You can't update via a custom recovery !

I was attempted to install 4.2.2 in my HTC One X phone and the HTC One w/ Beats Audio logo is stuck on the screen. I had a pain to wait to work with the ROM. I always use an original 4.1.1 ROM, and sometimes some apps are stuck while playing The Simpsons Tapped Out and Family Guy The Quest For Stuff.

Hello, I have tried to uninstall apps from my rooted M8 and I continue to get failures every time I try.
I have confirmed that it is rooted and that superuser and busy box are installed. I used the Hasoon2000 method to unlock my bootloader and root the device. I went with the TWRP 2.7.0.2 recovery.
What I am doing wrong that I cannot uninstall an system app?
The variant of the device I have is the T-Mobile M8.
Use Titanium backup to uninstall it. Or manually delete the APK files in system/app/ or system/priv-app/ depending on where it's located.
I would strongly suggest freezing system apps first (With titanium backup) and/or permanently as to make sure you don't get any whacky behaviour. If you do you can always unfreeze it but it may be harder to restore an app you uninstalled.

I think I was able to identify the issue after a bit of researching. I did not have S-OFF. I took those steps and now it is working like a charm. Thank you everyone for all your help.
i have switched from romaur v3 to amami, done a backup with "backup and restore" app in romaur v3,and now i cant find that app working for amami (kitkat 4.4.4),and dont know how to restore that backup >.<
any help please?
When you say "amami" does this mean you flashed a CyanogenMod nightly to your phone? CyanogenMod is AOSP: all stock Google / open-source software (no proprietary software is ever included). The Backup & Restore app belongs to Sony, I believe.
I wonder if you could try to open a ROM (that is based on 4.4.4, and has this backup & restore app included), take the APK file (and ODEX file if applicable) from /system/app, and copy it over into the rom that you currently have (and dont forget to set the correct permissions on the file(s) once they're copied).
I am currently running 4.4.4 RU stock rom, rooted. I can see the the files for Backup & Restore are /system/app/Backup-wizard.apk and /system/app/Backup-wizard.odex
I hope this helps you.
Yea this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/son...opment/jul-01-aosb-project-run-limit-t2801711
The only way is to format this phone and reinstall another version, then reinstall this. Any way you can share your files?

Can you clarify what you are saying above? slot? And are you sure the app was from 4.4.4? (I'm only assuming at this point that the app from a 4.4.4 system is the best option). There is also the possibility that the Backup & Restore app depends on other system items or modules in order to operate properly. (Sorry, I wish I had more expertise.)
If you want a copy of my Backup & Restore (apk and odex) from my 4.4.4 system, I will send. Just PM me your email address and I'll send a Dropbox link.
