Tab S t-800 overheating? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So up until about a month ago my tab s was fine, I was running stock lollipop but was rooted at this time. Then I started having some weird issues where it would hang while surfing on chrome, buttons would be unresponsive, couldn't scroll. The battery level started going a bit crazy, dropping quick. Then when rebooted it would jump up 20%. Also, when I'd reboot usually it would be better for awhile with no freezing.
When it continued to happen I started thinking something became corrupt in the OS. So I updated to Schizu's version of MM. That ran really well and I really liked it but then I noticed the battery drain issue that seems to plague that build. I could only get maybe 2 hours of battery of of a charge. Also it would get quite warm, I'm pretty sure I had the tablet shut down on me once or twice when the overheating was reported. Tried undercoating the cpu, didn't seem to help me.
Then came out the official MM build so I switched to that. Now I'm seeing battery drain and overheating. It will warn me it shut down a few apps and then a minute later it will just turn off.
At this point I'm starting to think the tablet is shot. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mark

Did you flash a rom that`s alters the cpu frequency like overclocking, Maybe when you flashed a stock rom it did not overwrite the overclocking, I am an rom newbie myself, you need to speak to those with more knowledge.
But it looks like your battery has gone bad and need replacing.
Sort the overheating first as a bad rom can affect the battery as well, though the battery is most likely on it`s last legs.
John.

reinstall MM but before that wipe data , cache and dalvik and use odin to reinstall marsmallow

My problem with overhearing is the Google Chrome app update. That's correct, Chrome! If I update the Chrome app that that is included with marshmallow, then my Tab S starts overheating and eating up lots of battery juice. It's due to some mediaserver service constantly running in the later versions of Chrome which causes the processor load to go way up even when I've left Chrome. If I open the recent apps and just swipe the Chrome app away, the processor load returns to normal. So, you could uninstall the Chrome updates and stop Chrome from auto updating in the Play Store since from my testing the version delivered with marshmallow doesn't have this problem.

I just disabled Chrome with Package Disabler Pro. I hate that browser...it's a pest Hope that stops that Media apk too, though I did not disable it. I don't know what it's purpose is.

Since I have owned this tablet my one biggest gripe has been web browsers! I have tried just about all the popular ones and not one of them acts right on FB (the FB app just sux). The best I have found is Lightening Browser. Not perfect, but heads above the rest IMHO. Works better than IE does on my PC! Big thing with it though seems to be (A) keeping the cache clear and (B) posting a comment on FB. Type one word and then a space and the OSK closes and the cursor jumps out of the text box. Then you have to tap it to continue and don't bother trying to use suggested words.
Dolphin is absolutely the worst
Boat Browser for Tablet needs an overhaul for MM at least with the SM-T800 it will totally lock up the tablet when browsing long lists of items like a search for an item on ebay.

Well, it seems the latest update (54) to the Chrome app is no longer doing this on my Tab S. Getting good battery life now, especially with using the Reading Mode setting on my most used apps.

I completely wiped like mentioned above and reinstalled. Did not update Chrome and have been good. Battery life isn't as good as I'd like but it's acceptable. I guess I'll allow Chrome to update and see what happens now.

Google chrome battery drainage?

Did anyone notice a huge drop in battery after updating google chrome a few days ago. I literally went from 100% to 40% within 6 hours without touching the phone. I believe its Google chrome so I uninstalled it but I'm not sure. Anyone else have this issue?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
You have a wakelock either way, use something like BetterBatteryStats just to check what it is. Chrome hasn't created any wakelocks for me. Actually in the past, I've noticed Chrome is a huge battery drain while using it, but the latest update seems to be a bit more conservative.
Well in battery stats, did Chrome come up as the culprit?
No but google services did and under that, it said that one of the google services were bookmark sync... I uninstalled chrome all together because I now use dolphin because I love the sonar feature... I'll see how it is tomorrow and will take it from there..

i'm not sure how to reproduce the problem, but google chrome is always the culprit behind my excessive battery drain
didn't use to happen... wonder what caused this..
I didnt notice battery drain. But the reason i uninstalled chrome was because that huge service runs non stop at like 80mb even when not in use and this phone has an aggressive ram problem as is without that exaserbating it.

Is it normal for a phone to slow down after awhile?

I've experienced this issue twice now wherein my phone would get extremely slow and laggy to the point that it's unbearable to use anymore and the only solution was a reboot. Launcher keeps on restarting, messaging app takes 5 seconds to open, camera is lagging etc and this is after a week of uptime at least.
Why does this happen in the first place and am I the only one experiencing this? I've been running only maguro milestone 5 and franco for the past month, no other roms whatsoever. Once I power down and reboot everything becomes nice and fast again.
Never happened to me on stock.
I'd say it's "normal" for a phone to slow down over time as you add apps and things, but it should never slow down to a crawl and start crashing until you reboot.

normal for it to slow down a bit but not like how you described it. i'm running stock though.
It's not normal. Install some monitoring tool like "OS Monitor" and run it when the problem happens to find out the culprit.
Oh and installing multiple apps will not slow down the phone. This is not Windows 95.

lol at the windows 95 comment
although the # of apps you have alone shouldnt slow your phone down, if you have a ton of apps running in the background eating up ram it may slow down if the available free ram you have is really really low
when your phone is laggy check the ram first
Thanks guys I'll try OS monitor to see what's running. It just happened again right now and this is getting annoying, even typing is laggy but after a reboot everything is normal again.
Kill background apps.

So far I have not had that issue. Probably like everyone else said. There is some run away app that's eating up your memory

Its not normal, but aokp does have a bug. Check your system process in system panel, it grows larger over time if you use lock screen options etc.

Facebook

Has anyone else had issues with Facebook? It only likes to load for me if i have a strong data signal, (i get a signal lost screen constantly) and the app also goes rogue quite often and won't even allow my phone to charge because it's using up so much cpu. I've tried deleting and reinstalling to no avail. It acts this way on different roms as well. I don't remember earlier versions acting this way.
Anyone else?
I've had similar issues...not so with the charging issues though. Sometimes ill start it up, it will time out or do whatever its doing, and it then sits ans eats up 20 percent or more of my CPU until I close it. I've uninstalled it since it will sometimes begin eating up CPU on its own. Not a terrible thing since I'm not on Facebook but definitely needs to be fixed.

I started using friendcaster which doesn't hang up like Facebook, although you still need to be signed in to Facebook on your phone. You would think an app for a site like Facebook would be flawless. There's no reason it can't work just as well as tapatalk.
I agree. Facebook app is so badly developed. At times I noticed in battery stats that it would prevent the phone from going into deep sleep causing battery to drain. Friendcaster is a great alternative. I use it.

same here, phone gets super hot with it, then I go into task manager and its got the cpu pegged at sometimes 50% or more. Ive actually just created a shortcut to the mobile site which actually looks and mimics the app, the only thing is you dont get contact sync unless you use social hub or leave the fb app installed.
tweetcaster on non aokp roms causes the same issues for me

Maps update on 10/29 killing battery on stock JB?

I've been trying to figure out why my battery has been so bad over the last few days and why Maps is using almost half the battery on my phone. I've checked to make sure nothing on the phone is using location services, cleared data, and turned off every location option in setting, yet Maps still eats battery like mad.
As a last resort I uninstalled the updated Maps app and am now using the version that came with JB. It's too early to be sure, but it seems like maybe battery usage is calming down. The phone is definately running a bit cooler now.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
Do you have Google locations checked ? That is normally also a big battery drainer

No, all location items were unchecked, Google Now was turned off, there was really no reason for it to be such a big drain.
BTW, after 2 hours I now have 97% battery left and maps is only about 6% of total usage. I'm thinking this made a big difference.
Thank you! I thought I'd gone crazy. After only doing a few app updates and the update to JB, I have also noticed a major drain on my battery compared to the entire time I've had my S3.
Any update on your test with rolling back to the older maps version? I'm a new convert to Android (loving it) and don't know how to do that even if it would help
If that was causing the problem, I may be in the same boat as you and I'll look into going back to the old version for now. I initially thought it was just the JB update as a whole..who knows

There are a whole slew of things that will kill battery on JB. Any app that syncs data in the background needs to have background syncing turned off. That includes Google Now and Facebook. Maps needs to have Location sharing and Location reporting turned off. I had done all that and was still having a huge drain on the battery. Uninstalling the Maps update is easy, didn't lose anything useful, and seems to have reduced battery consumption quite a bit. So, either my case is a fluke or there is some sort of bug in the Oct 29th update to Maps. I'd like to here if anyone else has had the same results I have.
I had done the same things as the OP and still had noticeable battery drainage. This morning I decided to freeze Maps with TiBu and midway through the day I now have 74% battery where yesterday I was at 40-50% midway through the day.

I too have been having much worse battery life with JB compared to ICS and all entirely due to the Maps app (losing ~9% overnight when just sleeping!). It is always at the top of my usage even when never using it. Never had a problem with it on ICS. Thought it may be related to Google Now but maybe it is indeed the latest version causing issues all by itself.
I've been afraid to freeze maps. Not only do I use it regularly, but it seems that lots of other apps rely on it (part of why it's such a battery killer).

Pixel 3XL Ram Management problem

Okay so the phone is great let me start there and virtually no lag or studder when using most apps again all. But I did notice today while using Google Maps, Pokemon Go, and Facebook messenger that switching between the apps there was a major system hang and a slow down. Also after having a bunch of apps open it ****s Pokemon go down completely from running in the background and even though it shows it's still open in the recents, when I go back to it, it starts up again like I just opened the app and reloaded it. Has anyone else noticed this issue? And if so is this something that could be fixed with an update or is this just bad ram management for 4gb of ram on this phone?
Pokemon Go is a terribly optimized heavy resource game, it reloads after using almost anything else on my Pixel 2
One thing I've noticed for some apps, if you have it battery optimized, it will do that. YouTube Music for me would. I would be in the car, stop and go in a gas station or whatever, come back out and it would startup like it just opened for the first time. Turned off optimization and hasn't done it since. But yeah, watch out for some games. Some are resource hogs.

This was happening to me on my Pixel 2 XL, and I thought it was a RAM management issue. Turns out it was battery optimization. I turned off battery optimization and PoGo stopped closing in the background. I did this for a couple of other programs I didn't want aggressively closed. It seems to have done the trick.

I think there's a RAM leak. I think there was one on the 2 XL too.
I saw someone in the comments of an article say there is way to fix this with root. Is there a magisk mod that helps with this?
probably the SWAP being used

More and more reports are coming up regarding this issue - playing music in the background and then using the camera, etc.
I have experienced it when using Smart AudioBook Player playing in the background and have google maps navigation running. All of a sudden, the audio bookstops playing. I have to switch to the audiobook and restart playback. It then happens again and when I restart the audiobook a second time, google maps' navigation gets closed out. I think google needs to issue a software update for their RAM management.

In addition to that @topjohnwu has stated:
Just checked the code, it seems that the configurations are read only once when it started. If kernel devs wants to tune LMK, they would either have to: a. Modify /system/bin/lmkd to allow runtime changes b. Use resetprop to modify those read-only props, and restart lmkd https://twitter.com/MishaalRahman/status/1054409086626861056

Ram isn't a problem for me but I will be implementing simple lmk in FrankenKernel ,for those with issues it's probably just aggressive .. Should not be a huge deal going forward..

Furthermore I think people are taking this a tad too far I have had the device since Friday and can't speak anything but great things and look forward to developing on it in the coming days
There is defiantly some ram issues, i have been using a few music apps that keep getting killed when im doing other things. im sitting at over 3gb of usage almost 700mb more usage then my pixel 2 xl with the same apps i use. Im sure it will be fixed just not sure it will be done with in my return window and since i got it from vzw i wont have the luxury of flashing better optimized kernels . sucks having issues like this but i think all my pixel nexus phones had some odd issues for the first few weeks/months
I noticed the RAM problem while using Amazon Music and Zombie's Run! The music would stop during the first song while the Run app still runs. It really sucks to have to stop my workout to make the music start. My 2XL never had this issue.
I'm on the fence. For this amount of money, I should be happy with it, not annoyed.
