when using your s pen... - Note 7 Questions & Answers

When you're using your s pen scrolling through pages and what not and you need to hit the home button do you use your finger or the s pen tip to push it? It's more convenient to push it using the s pen but was wondering if it'd damage the tip or scratch the home button.

I use the tip of the S Pen because its eaiser and faster. I haven't noticed any scratches of any sort yet and I'm using the grey (harder) tips for my pen.

That's actually something else I was wondering about. What's the difference between the different tips other than some being harder/softer? Does it change your writing?

It changes the feel. For example when I was using a glass screen protector I used the rubber tip so I can have more control. I've changed my screen protector to a Skinomi which is plastic and the rubber tip just has too much grip on the screen so switching to a hard tip fixed this now it just glides no resistance.

Do you know which one comes pre-installed?

I use an app named "easy home" with this app, you dont need to press the home button, just touching it, no need to click, like the back an recents buttons

If I remember correctly it's the soft tip 'white.

Case for Power/Wake IR button

I find it very difficult to wake the phone with the power/wake button. Just the angle of the bezel and how flush the IR button is makes it much more of a chore compared to any other phone I've used. Does anyone know of a case that can remedy the situation? I don't care if it covers the IR.
I bought the poetic case off amazon (3rd revision) and it doesn't help with the flush power button issue. Since no one responded I'll keep updating as I get more cases. Sad.
I don't know how tough it is to remove the old poetic case (since everyone seem to gush about how difficult it is) but I don't find it very hard. Simply pry open one corner then expand the gap and it pops off pretty easily. I much rather have a tight case than a lose one *wink*
Currently waiting on basal case. Don't know if I should just exchange then phone because of the recessed button.
I came across this:

I have one for my One S, and honestly it's junk. Its hard to put in your pocket because its grippy, and it collects lint constantly.
The rubber inside feels cheap, and loose around the sides where there is no support.

Well thanks for that lool
Here is my remedy for the power button and its awkward position. Never use it. Find a kernel with swipe to wake and then I use a sleep widget on the home screen to sleep. I double tap the bottom of the screen to wake it up. Works perfectly
I got the urban armor gear one off of ebay

Yep the basal case sucks too. I actually flashed cyanogenmod nightlys and use the swipe to unlock feature. Got to swipe all the captivate buttons kinda like iPhone. Unfortunately there is a slight lag but that'll probably get cleared up when more stable releases are out.

That's because it is made of silicone. That's one material I hate... yes, even in the other way.

Hmmm... for the time I'm running CM 10.1, I'm using volume wake and hold menu to lock. I'm sure it saves battery life because the capacitive panel is off when asleep. Plus when I had S2W enabled, it seemed that I could never get it right the first time.
Agreed, I too also had this case on my one s and it's really crappy and too loose in the areas where the hard plastic doesn't wrap the case

The urban armor gear makes the volume button so much better than without it, though the wake button stays the same maybe even abit worse..

Home button: should it stick above bezel?

On my Note the home button is slightly raised above the bezel - not more than 0.5mm - which causes accidental turning on of the device, when it's carried in pocket or bag.
I wonder if all N8 have similar construction, or is mine somehow special and should be replaced - could anyone confirm how it looks on yours?

Mine is that way too.
That's normal.
I would also prefer it to be ever so slightly recessed instead... or at least flush.
I also wish I could disable the capacitive buttons with a gesture or long press or something... i brush them by mistake too easily in landscape

It's disappointing and looks a bit like a design mistake - on Note I the home buttons is placed below frame, precisely to avoid accidental presses.
Still, it's a minor issue, besides that Note 8 is everything I ever needed, except for embedded espresso machine and foldable 50 inch display....

problem w/ magnetic cover... help!

Okay so i recently got a galaxy note 10.1 2014 ed. and i bought this ivso case for it: ww.amazon.com/Samsung-Edition-Bluetooth-Keyboard-Portfolio/dp/B00FJTV0PG
I like the case and the detachable keyboard but what i cannot stand is the effects the magnets have on the tablet. It makes it auto wake, which i guess is kind of nice, but when i fold it back around behind the tablet, it always auto locks my tablet. It also will not let me drag the drop down notification bar from the top when it is folded around the back.
Anyways, i was wondering if anyone knew of any apps or settings to disable the effects of the magnets on the tablet? I've spent hours googling and trying out different apps and whatnot but nothing helps.
Thanks in adv,

What I did was get a sharp knife and take the magnet out. Stick a velcro instead.

I folded some papers and slip it underneath the tablet in the case. It block the magnet so it won't off the screen when u flip the cover to the back.
The pen holder strap that comes with the cover is too small to hold my Wacom stylus feel. So, I got some stretchable strap, loop it and staple it to the paper. Now I can slip my stylus comfortably attachedge to the cover.

Off topic, but how do you like the Wacom feel?
I'm thinking of getting one but I read that it is not as accurate as the default stylus, unless held at a 90 degree angle (!). Is that the case?

There is a bit of offset. But it doesn't affect me much. Just write or draw like normal.
In apps like lecture notes, tgere is a setting where u can adjust the offset to make it accurate.

No. I ended up just getting a different case that doesn't have a keyboard. Since there's no magnetic keyboard, the magnets aren't nearly as strong and only affects the tablet when I open it, not when I fold it around the back.
Thanks for the speedy response. On close inspection I noticed that there is a small magnet on the front cover top left corner about 1 inch from the top. almost invisible but can find it when we run a coin over the surface of the front cover. When the back side of the note 10.1 meets this magnet, screen switches off. I noted that by placing a magazine/ booklet between the front cover and the back when using in flipped over mode: the screen does not switch off. A small victory. But wish that samsung provides a solution 2 disable this magnetic screen off feature through a menu option.
i have same problem and i fix it by take out magnate from cover. i hope found a better way for this problem
Did anyone find any way to turn off the magnetic lock and unlock function? When I backfold my cover (aftermarket), it automatically locks my tab. Which is very irritating. I have Samsung galaxy tab S5e
You'd think that the guys who make these cases would just add a small amount of padding over the magnet so it only activates the sensor on the one side... To simple an idea I guess...

Swipe in from the left very difficult

Title says it. I am finding swiping in from the left (specifically for hamburger menus in apps) very difficult to do. Half the time it just seems to not register at the edge of the screen. I thought maybe it was my case, but it's just as difficult without the case. Some kind of edge rejection or maybe diminished touch sensitivity from the screen protector? I don't wanna remove it if I don't have to... Anyone else seen this?

Hmm, because I have the exact same issue as you with my TG screen protector.
It's pretty damn annoying, even had to switch launchers because I can't use swipes from the edge anymore :/
Yes, exactly the same issue. I'm guessing that's a bezel less design flaw if OP5T and it cannot be fixed with software patch. I can live with this issue
Same thing here. I just thought it was from having the case on, and so I didn't bother trying to experiment with it more until now.
Don't know what's wrong with your 5T's because case/screen protector or not I have no problem swiping down from the top, bottom, from the left or from the right on my 5T...
I opened play store and pull the menu from the left with no issues and also the notification bar from the top.
If you are having problems this does not seem to be the norm for me but then again maybe mine is the aberrant unit... It works fine...

I have to be very deliberate with my swipes from the left and I'm guessing it's in part because of the small bezels and my fat fingers. So when I swipe in, it doesn't see my finger as being all the way to the left, so it becomes difficult to swipe the hamburger menus in.
What I don't know if it's because of the bezels directly or if the screen protector is making it worse. And I don't want to take it off to test because then I will need to get a new (potentially inferior) screen protector and hope I can apply it without any bubbles.

Again, my screen protector is stock applied from Oneplus, I am by no means a small person and have ham fists too. The bezels on the right should be the same size or the phone would look pretty funny...
Either side to swipe is the same, quick swipe from left or right, top or bottom, all work equally well.
How does yours swipe from the other sides? Do you have an issue swiping from top or bottom too?
It shouldn't matter where you swipe from, it should be the same. Quick and easy with no having to try again and again.

No I don't have any issues from the other directions because I don't have to swipe in menus from those sides. Swiping between home screens is no issue, it's just hamburger menus on the left. And I think it's because the bezel is so small that my fat fingers taps don't register far enough over, so I swipe and get no menu unless I am very deliberate. On my last phone, the Nexus 6, I never had to think about it.
I have some issues swiping on a certain edge of my screen were I can see that the pre-applied screen protector is starting to come up a little from the screen. I'm thinking of pulling it completely off soon.

Magnetic tempered glass casing (screen + case combo)

Gotta admit, I've never seen anything like this! There has to be a gap of some sort between the screen and the protector, so I wonder how well the screen responds? I'm currently using the sandstone case from OnePlus along with the factory applied screen protector and both are working well for me so far. The price seems fair. So we need some guinea pigs. Looking forward to reading some first hand reviews.
this is a scam. I ordered from one of those ads on facebook. Its the same damn product advertised by different websites (allbort, bowbul, desoor). They are all in china. One on ebay is 7 bucks but these websites charge 21 bucks. I cancelled the order 4 hrs after putting it. Even though they say they will cancel the order if it has not shipped, they didnt cancel and sent me an email 2 days later that they can not cancel it because it has shipped. Then I think well, give me the shipping tracking info. Now they say there is a problem with the post-office. I tried to resolve it with paypal but there were of no help either.

I bought and used one of those two sided tempered glass magnetic screen protector for just short of four months. As soon as I got it I spent time looking for alternate cases but was surprised that I liked it better than my initial impression. At first I thought the back was more slippery than a fish just out of water but that wasn't true even when my hand was sweaty. Note that I'm a two handed phone user.
Every week or so specs of dirt would appear under the screen like with a tgsp that isn't full adhesive. I just opened the cover then use a piece of tape to remove the specs and it looked great again. Unfortunately the weekly clean eventually was the end of that case. Prying the top and bottom apart must have twisted the top as the tempered glass cracked. Within a day I saw a similar crack on the bottom half. So be very careful when you eventually need to remove specs of dirt.
One other draw back of this case is the lack of sensitivity at the very bottom of the screen. If you use Gestures then no matter how high you crank up screen sensitivity in the settings it is not good enough. My solution was to install FNG (Fluid Navigation Gestures) from the playstore. You can set it up for left or right side gestures and the case has enough sensitivity to work reliably.
Oddly enough even though I no longer use the case and have turned down screen sensitivity to normal plus have Android 10 installed (better gestures right in the OOS), I still use FNG. It has more features that I'm not prepared to give up.
Finger print scanner sensitivity was never an issue once I cranked up the settings and re-entered my finger prints.
the case i recieved bent when i was trying to unattach the magnets
These magnetic cases look beautiful until you drop it. It falls apart, is slippery and provides zero protection. I bought one for my previous s10+. Just fell apart and phone flew out and hit the floor. Beautiful dent near the top right edge of the phone.
Thanks everyone for the info. I guess it is not worth it!

I'm curious about FNG, I downloaded and got pro to see if it could replace xposed edge for me for full side navigation. It seems like it might, however I can't get the additional gestures of swipe up and down to work. I have them set as home and recents but nothing happens. Back works just fine, so does menu as backs secondary function. All permissions it asked me are enabled. Any help would be appreciated.
Sorry for being completely off topic.

I'd never used the up/down swipes but gave them a try and they both worked to start an app. At first the gesture was very unreliable. I adjusted the "Sensitivity" slide (in settings on the same page as you assign the swipe action), to half way and then the swipe was perfectly consistent. The sensitivity widened the swipe area farther into the screen. I think any phone case that is close to the screen border makes the swipe area more difficult to contact and be recognized by FNG.
