Google assistant - Note 7 Questions & Answers

do you think it'll be possible to rip the assistant out of a Pixel and APK it for other non pixel phones?
Specifically for the Note 7? (without having to use allo)

Think it'll be built into the system so no. The Nexus devices aren't even getting it.

not yet no... but they did say it will come for other systems before too long.
I presume its probably reliant on Nougat 7.1

I just don't understand Google. Why invent yet another assistant when they could have just advanced NOW. Which one will be left to rot and die?
Look at their other things. What are we up to, 4 different messaging type apps? or is it 5 or 6. Hangouts, voice, messages, Allo, Duo. And not to mention the withering and eventual death of GTALK. Why not make 1 really good one with everything the other 5 have instead of letting them die out.
It makes me worried about adopting any new Google product and become reliant on it because they may change their minds and just turn it off at a later date.
Yeah, I'm still mad about iGoogle and Reader......

I still use Greader / News plus:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noinnion.android.newsplus
It uses Feedly (which itself uses a G+ sign in). When reader shut its doors I was able to import all my feeds into Feedly.
But yeah, reader was awesome.

Multi-Select text message for deletion

Its very frustrating going through and deleting text messages one at a time. Will there and is there any hack to enable this feature. Will Microsoft add this feature as we have this feature for the email but not for text messaging.
This will be very useful for me when I get tons of text messages and want to delete them as I do my emails
Agree! I know I would use this much more than copy & paste. We could sure use this feature.
It still blows the mind, to me... How Microsoft 100% failed to look at what the iPhone did and learn from it.
Simple stuff like this, sockets, cut/copy/paste... Come on... Why did they think people want it on iOS and Android but never on WP7???? It just blows the mind.

time... time... its a new OS, they need time to build it. They didn't have time to do it. Simple as time. Not because MS tought it was good to leave sockets and cut/paste out of the phone. Just a matter of time...
How hard is it for them to add these features though. I just don't understand how they put it on the email and not the text. It shouldn't be that hard to add this

So they released it knowing full well... They were leaving out basic features.
At some level, that means they decided it was "good" to release it without them.
Now, I understand you don't throw all your features into an initial release because hey... the product might flop. But copy/paste? Come on.

Android user on WP7: Initial thoughts.. and concerns

After playing briefly with WP7 I decided i wanted to try it out more officially so I picked up a Focus from cowboom and after 4 days with it here's my thoughts.. I am coming from a CM7 Captivate BTW
Hardware is super nice, screen is gorgeous, battery life rocks, and the gps is dead on (something im not used to on my captivate).. no complaints here at all
Software is great to use, I have 1st gen and ZuneHD so I knew id love that.. the transitions and effects are fantastic touches... but
A. maps is garbage: couldnt even find a store one block from me ( gave results in MS instead) still trying to find a good replacement app.
B. is there a way to have keyboard vibrate when on silent?
C. Only microsoft would install updates one at a time and restart over and over between.
D. Google Calenders wont sync right, I have several calenders i use from my account but it only shows me the default one. Any fix for that?
over all im really impressed, still trying to find apps to replace/match my android setup... but now i really want to be able to dive deeper into the hacks but it seems Chevron option has disappeared.. for now..

@D - I don't think is possible still.
@A - are you using bing?
@C - yes.
@B - i'm not sure, but I would imagine so?
So basically I have no idea. And I've had it for over a year.
A. Bing is getting better, but it is still no replacement for Google (at least for me). For example, I have two Costco stores in my area. One is about 4 miles from my house, the other is about 20 miles. Until about a month ago, searching for Costco would always try to direct me to the more distant one, even though the closer one has been around much, much longer. (Disclaimer - of course, I have no trouble finding Costco, but it was a good barometer of the incompleteness of Bing data in my area).
B. I don't know of any way to turn on haptic feedback from the keyboard when the phone is silenced.
C. Yeah, I suppose the update process still has room for improvement.
D. Contrary to Microsoft's official statements that only your primary Google calendar is supported, you can sync secondary and shared calendars on your phone. Here is a link with instructions (they are a bit arcane, but they do work - I have three calendars syncing to my phone right now):

Android update doesnt delete anything flashing between roms you have to but that is what TiBu is for.
when i go to m.google.com/sync from the phone it doesnt have anything there to select. Can this work from IE, the directions in prev post say Safari but i feel that was copied from iphone directions.
No, the instructions are very clear. You must use Safari (from your PC), because it allows you to set the user agent to appear as an iOS device. It will not work from Firefox or IE. Again, follow the instructions exactly as described in the article I linked and you will see your calendars.
[Edit]
I think I see the source of confusion. It says to use Safari on your "device". For "device", in that case, substitute "PC". So, to sum up:
1 - Make sure you have set up a Google account on your phone to sync your primary calendar, and that it is working properly.
2 - Follow the Safari instructions on your PC to find and enable your secondary calendars (and be sure to remember to click the "Save" button on the page).
3 - Force a manual sync of your Google account on the phone to confirm that the additional calendars are syncing.

Thank you for that, I recognized the steps from when I had an iphone and when it said "from your device" I assumed it meant that, just as it did with an iphone.
any one have tips on unlock codes since chevron is out of them?
Also is there a way to disable screen rotation?
I wouldn't go as far as saying that Bing maps is garbage. It tends to find everything I'm looking for in my area and in metro St Louis when I was there back in August. However it can't seem to find the pizza hut in my town that opened in June but neither can google maps or the pizza hut app.

I live in a mid sized suburb of the 3rd largest city in the US. it's expanding so if its not fully developed in Poland it will very soon be. Especially since the deal with NAVTEQ/Nokia.

Android updates typically do not wipe the phone. I've done like 4 updates on this phone and none of them got wiped. I don't know what you're talking about.

I think that's because they pull data from that crappy CitySearch.com, instead working together with someone that does it better or building their own repository.

Ah, well I suppose you can either shell out money for a full blown GPS program offered like Telenav, or Navigon; buy a chevronlabs unlock token and put nokia drive on your phone; or wait for Telenav's html5 solution that'll probably be out in a few months.

Eh? How are you guys looking up the phone number?

[Q] iPhone users. What do you miss?

*****UPDATED 11/30/12*****
tl;dr -- It was the best freaking decision I've ever made in my cellular life.
Things we miss:
- iMessage (Use something like Kik as an alternative)
- iLife and iWork for iOS (Various replacements. I started using ePrint by HP for my wireless printing needs. Works almost as well)
- Game Selection (I work on my phone, so playing games doesn't affect me much, but a lot of the core games are still there)
Things you gain from the switch:
- Bigger screen for easier reading.
- Battery life is omg good.
- The cameras are just as good in my opinion. Low light shots are grainy.
- S Pen is really useful for taking notes in a pinch. Pull it out, jot the note, put it back, note autosaves.
- Other S Pen functionality is really nice. Things like previews in the calendar, cutting out parts of the screen to save in notes, etc.
- Performance is bar none better 10-fold perceptively. I never have a moment of hesitation on my phone.
- Tops out at 128GB (Eat that 16GB iPhone 5)
- Size doesn't really hurt your pocket that badly. Bigger screen catches the bosses attention. I have had more than one comment at work about how I take my job seriously being ready for anything like that.
************************************************
I have an iPhone 5 presently and have been debating for several days now whether of not I want to get the Note 2. I have watched Phonedogs comparison and read article after article and it feels like the phones pretty well break even. So I thought I'd ask some former iPhone users about their experience with their switch.
I have Apple TVs and Airport Expresses all over the place. I stream things almost exclusively while I'm at home. I also mirror my phone to the TV at night laying in bed (doing that now typing this). That being said, I know android has apps that support airplay but not necessarily a screen mirroring solution short of VNC that would require a PC hooked up to my TV and a whole lot more of an inconvenience to get fired up.
I don't know what android has that is directly on par with iWork for iOS. I love typing up documents, syncing them to my phone with iCloud, and being able to edit and print them from my phone wireless on practically any and all wireless printers regardless of brand. iWork for iOS works completely and with a full feature set that I don't ever remember finding in Documents To Go. Has this improved at all?
Not knowing much about the Android ecosystem, what kind of apps are equivalent to iMovie? I use that quite a bit and am curious what android solutions match that in ease of use and functionality. I can't stress enough that when I ask these comparison questions, I'm not trying to prove one better. I'm actually wanting to make the switch. I'm just looking to be more informed about what I'm loosing and what I'm gaining before doing so.
What have you iPhone users missed about your iPhone since you made the switch?
I miss iTunes and some of the apps from the appstore. However, it all makes up it when I remind myself that "can't do no work on a 4" screen"
I switched. No regrets
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
In my opinion, the only thing missing on Android is the robust game/app selection and consistency in layout/design. I have an iPad 3 anyway, so I have the best of both worlds regardless. The iPhone in both 3.5" and 4" alike simply isn't useful for my needs anymore.
PS: I have a WDTV Live that will allow the equivalent of "Airplay" without any hassle through the Note 2. In terms of exclusive apps (e.g. Garageband, Numbers, Pages, iMovie, etc.) there is no equal. If you are heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem, it may be somewhat difficult to switch.
I know the Note 2 comes with Polaris Office included in the stock ROM. Probably won't touch the iWork suite in terms of interface and usability, but give it a try on a demo model and see if it may work for you.

I thought i was the only one who misses that little feature. Aside from that, I currently own both phones and theyre both fantastic but sadly I prefer my Gnote2 over my iph5. The big screen is a huge plus and the S-Pen is really neat. But I do like the apps more on the iphone.

All in all...it's going to depend on how deep your into Apple's pockets..Phone for phone...there really is no comparison on the differences...all one has to do is to hold each and use each.
What do I miss the most about my Iphone...simple...all the money I lost making the switch back to my Note II...from all of my expensive apps and extra Icloud storage I can no longer use...but...IMHO...it's worth it...
Mac
I'm not so deep I can't get out. I can return the Airport and iPhone still and swap for the Gnote2. I need to google around more about DLNA devices because streaming is nice, and if there's a.... 'cleaner' product of method of doing it, it may be worth it.
This is available on the Note 2e

This can be done in 2 ways on the GN2. One wny is to switch on the feature in the settings under "Motion"/"Double Tap". Otherwise, assuming the long text is in a browser you can use Boat Browser (which is very customizable) and has this feature.
Regarding AirPlay and the other things mentioned in this thread, can you not simply keep you iphone as a Wifi only media player/streamer?
I use my old Galaxy SI as such with Spotify. Without a Sim card and a 3g data connection the battery can last almost three days also

The question is per user. I prefer the non-locked down system of Android. Watch a lot of movies and the iPhone has to be jailbroken to do anything other then basic usage. XBMC on my Note2 + MHL adaptor and no rooting. I love the customization.
Another reason I switched was because of iTunes. What a mess. I have a lot of mixes for music and iTunes splits it up. I prefer just being able to dump on my sd card.
Only thing I miss is the gaming apps. But not that much that I would switch back.

Does it work for the browser? That's where I need it the most.
I've owned and used as my main device every iphone up to the iphone 5. I'm loving the Note 2, but there are a few things I miss:
- Overall simplicity. There was a lot of handholding in iOS that I didn't even necessarily realize was happening, which I miss. Biggest/most annoying example so far: sending videos via MMS or email. Unless you have the "limit size to MMS" or whatever checked when you record the video (which would mean a crappy source quality in the video, should you want to use it for anything other than an MMS), you can't MMS it to someone (and unless it's more than a few seconds long, it'll likely be too big to email as well). There are some apps out there for transcoding the video to a lower bitrate, resizing, etc, but this is a royal pain to have to do any time you want to send a quick video. iOS did it all automatically when you went to send the video.
- Better versions of apps. Some apps are just better/smoother on ios. Examples include facebook, Steam, The Weather Channel.
- Photo Stream. My wife is on an iPhone, and we have an old ipad that we use as a photo frame. I miss being able to easily have photos I take appear on both her phone and the iPad.
- iCloud. I miss stuff syncing with my mac desktop apps for things like notes, reminders, etc. I'm sure I could find something to get me by for the notes, and the others I mentioned would sync to a Google calendar, but still. I miss all that happening automatically.
Overall though, I'm very happy to have made the switch. There is no way I could go back to that tiny iPhone screen now.

Those are good points to know, thank you. Looking back I do remember video sending being a pain. I eventually ended up doing private Youtube uploads all the time and linking people to the videos. An extra step.
Not that I'm saying that's a deal breaker at all, but it's those little things. Does Android have a response to Photostream out of the box? If I recall, doesn't it automagically upload to Google+ or something of the sort?

Come on, if there's a way to do it and you know how, just tell the guy rather than being snarky for no good reason. This thread is obviously targeted towards people making the switch from iOS to Android, and there is a definite learning curve involved there.

It does upload to Google+, yes. I wound up turning that off, though, since I rarely use Google+. I did turn on automatic photo/video uploading for Dropbox, though, and I am absolutely loving that. I know there's photo/video upload in Dropbox for iOS, but this all happens via a service running in the background, so you don't have to have the actual Dropbox app open for it to happen.
Something else to note about the auto-upload for Dropbox (and Google+, for that matter): you can use that to share videos/images easily. Only issue is the person receiving it has to download/stream the full-res video or image, and you have to wait for it to upload before you can share itg. Still much easier than transcoding just to send a video, though.
I'm using both....Loving both

A new Nexus 7 user desperately seeking advice:

Ok,
The nexus 7 is my very first tablet that I bought last week.
I need to keep Google at bay to some degree and guard my privacy. My tablet is not rooted but I need a top notch privacy application.
A link to an xda post about the best Nexus 7 apps would be nice too.
I chose the Nexus 7 to avoid the Vendor bloatware/crud but Google had movie, books and other crud to remove. Sheesh!

(You should have posted in General or Q/A Thread about this) but what exactly are you looking for? Everyone seems to be worried about Google's Privacy issues, and I'm not sure why.
Movies and books are a big reason why people buy tablets..

You can just disable them if you want.

I share your sentiments. Unfortunately it is hard to do without rooting.
If you don't want your calendar and contacts on Google, be sure to turn off "sync" in their settings. Turn off sync in all apps you don't want to share with the world. Use Adaway app.
Avoid Google searches and use DuckDuckGo or Ixquick instead.
LBE security suite, firewall apps (I use Avast but there are others) help.
Look at Xposed Framework installer (there's an xda thread) and the XPrivacy Module.
Hope this helps.

I heard that there are some risks involved with that application I broke down and rooted my Nexus 7 and installed AppOpsX. Is the app you suggest much better?
Not familiar with with Appopsx. Sorry.
Have had no problems with what I recommended.

Xprivacy is excellent but as soon as I enabled the module SuperSu went nuts and wouldn't allow root access for other apps.
Interesting. Doesn't do it on my Nexus 7 2013 with Android 4.3. Maybe something on KitKat.
I would suppose so as I enabled shell access with Xprivacy.. I'll keep testing.. It's too great to give up on.
Xprivacy is great, it is working fine with Cyanogenmod 11. I have to tweak it every now and then but it is far and above better than any privacy based app I've ever used.
Don't forget to wear your tinfoil hat. Lol.
Out of curiosity, what exactly are you worried about?
Actually it should be obvious, if you go to your Google account via desktop Google has a log of where you have been via GPS. It has voice prints from Google Now, it keeps wifi passwords and much much more. I don't work for Google so I don't know how trustworthy they are with other people's data. I wouldn't want any company to have all my information at their fingertips.
Some companies sell your information, others use it to profile you so that they can show ads that are closer to your liking. Trust is everything.
@klepto You can close location reporting, and it won't have a log of where you've been. I don't know what a "voice print" is, but google now is all about collecting information about you, i know this answer is frustrating but if you want privacy don't use google now. It keeps wifi passwords for your convenience, who would google sell your wifi password, your neighbour? Every company you ever used have all information you give them at their fingertips, but they cannot use it as they like because you are protected by law, you are not trusting and you shouldn't trust any company, you are trusting the law. As for the OP, first decide which information you want to hide from them, for example are you trying to hide your searches, or your messages etc, then search/use the app that hides it. There is a project like this if you are interested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1715375

It's hardly important, or a big deal though. If you're concerned about what they do/can do with the data, read their policies.

I agree with the OP. Many others do too. Privacy may be a thing of the past but one can try.
When identify theft becomes more rampant than it already is, more effective privacy laws will probably be enacted. Till then, some of us prefer to lock our home's front doors - even though we are well aware that they can be kicked open. Not everyone has joined the Facebook groupies who share all their private moments for all to see.

I agree with you though, privacy is important.
However, the information google use/take isn't ever going to cause an issue to my life, so there's no reason for me to get worked up worrying about nothing. So what if they have some records of where I've been, or any wifi passwords I've let them save, what negatives can actually happen arising from that?
Fair enough if it's just a matter of principle, but there's no actual need to worry about anything happening.

The problem with that thinking is that 1 your expecting them to obey the laws and 2 you don't know what level of protection they or their partners that they share your info with have in place, and how easily it can be uses to steal your identity. What is a internet the if "is" your neighbor we give out our email address freely with that if they hax Google they can now remotely access your WiFi and put a keystroke logger on your network. Sounds a bit far fetched but just think just because you live in a good neighborhood don't you still lock your doors at night?

Google Totally Ruined RCS

Google will find a way to ruin anything its sad... All they had to do was not F this up and keep it out of the carriers hand and build out their servers and data center like Apple and they would of had a winning combo...I don't want to hear about its apps or that app its about a seamless process period if Google had done the most effective way i guarantee nobody would to add another app or ask someone else to download the same app it would just work great out the box period
https://www.extremetech.com/mobile/...nce-coalition-to-deploy-rcs-messaging-in-2020
RCS messaging app is not yet officially announced. Once they announce hopefully it will be preinstalled in every android phone from 1.1.2020. I think we need a messaging app like imessages for all phones regardless operating systems. There should not be any boundaries.

I mean it's a back and forth. Let's say they push Google out, what leverage do they really have? To say they ruined is assumed they are willfully saying screw it despite being able to do something. What weight can Google pull against the carriers that won't affect their money?
They did it in France and some other countries because operators wouldn't implement it. Still, no SMS apps beside Google's and Samsung's one are RCS compatible, and the later can't use it with Google's servers so there's basically just Google alone and quite nobody use its app so there's no point at all.
I don't see the big deal... I am surprised everyone trusts Google with the amount of data they have on people.
Carriers getting on board with or without Google doesn't matter. What matters is interloping with other carriers worldwide. They are all using UP so interloping will be there.

Def a big deal. When you have family over seas when you don’t have to constantly download different apps. It was a simple fix and do it just as apple did build your own servers (iMessage) and damn with the carriers but I agree with the information apple at least has encryption and somewhat fight for your privacy

Depends on the country. In korea is kakaotalk
In most of europe it is whatsapp.
We dont NEED RCS and did someone say RCS is getting rid of charging for texting over country lines?
I feel like the rest of the world has already solved this issue. It's not really something we are waiting for RCS to fix
I just do not understand why some people are so upset about this rcs, it seems as actual phone calls, emails, whatsapp, telegram, etc do not exist, in my country almost nobody uses sms, as whatsapp does not have cost on data consumption, but, everybody is entitled to have its own opinion...

It's not a big deal... interloping will still happen and that's what really matters. Even with Google you have to download their messaging app so it's a moot argument if you buy anything outside if Google devices. Google only made Jibe for the data they can collect. They are not going to give a service for free even to carriers. As long as interloping happens people can use the stock apps on their devices and it works. People forget that T-Mobile made a deal with Samsung which also has a deal with Google about interloping their servers and using UP.

I dont think that many folks are upset. The US in particular is just behind the curve when it comes to messaging because the majority of Americans have zero reason to be worried about international charges because most of us arent communicating outside the united states and if we are it's usually Mexico and Canada which some carriers have plans to make even that free. Add to that unlimited texting on literally any plan.
So unless you are on an iphone you are probably using SMS as your main method of messaging.
Then we take into account some where like europe where a train ride can take you through multiple countries in a day, you then need to start considering international SMS charges. So people start using WhatsApp or Viber. Or India where bargain android phones rule and mobile plans arent that great so people instead opt to use messaging apps over sms.

Because they are annoyed about having 32 7573 different apps for doing the same things.
The others got some great features but always at for basic ones, or had flaws.
For example : most people wanted/needed is an IRC with an integrated friend list since 20 years and only Discord provide that, but : privacy/security are opaque, you don't know how it's secured, you can't create your own server for better perfs, plus they sell features although it could have been free if servers would have been charged by yourself.
Telegram has awful group management and security is opaque too.
Whatsapp and its theme management? What's appearance anyway? Security and privacy are also obscure.
The only ones that can guarantee your privacy are Olvid and Wire, but I didn't tested what features they got.

smh...ok...If Google messaging app is native to android is a standdard you dont have to download anything also when you can pick up a phone and not have to worry about anything in that it just works thats saying something...once again your solution is to download a ton of apps when you could have a native app do it all...Now lets talk about your interloping APPLE DIDNT NEED INTERLOPING AND YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY ITS BECAUSE THEY DIDNT LEAVE IT INTO THE CARRIERS HAND...WTH talking about givng something for free?

Google messages isn't standard to Android. It's proprietary like all other Google apps. What matters is interloping like SMS works across carriers regardless of where you are... Universal Profile follows the same rules. No matter how grandstanding carriers do with naming their "initiative". Google wants UP to succeed and if people use their app for UP they get more money out of it. As I said Samsung and Google are already working on interloping. Carriers are working on it as well. That's the Crux which will make UP the defacto standard and any messaging client that supports UP will work.
iMessages is not universal profile and is more like AOL messenger mixed in with Ping and all apple did was add encryption. You have to buy Apple to use it. You can't use it on any other device but their own. Kind of like the Pixel... Well anyhow Apple will have to add UP to their messaging app because when carriers move over to it they're up a creek without a paddle as people with Apple devices won't be able to send messages to people without an iDevice.
You think Google made Jibe to give it for free? No they get to collect user data and lots of it. Our data is their product.

Rcs will still support legacy SMS. So idevice users will still be able to message none idevice people. That wont change.
iMessage in my eyes is better because of the SMS backbone and all the features and ways to display messages to other iMessage users.
Basically what Allo was trying to get to but without the SMS backbone.

Google goofed even before that. Hangouts... Was supposed to be their one stop shop. Then they made Android messages, Allo, and Duo... They had and still don't have any real sense of direction on what they want to do. I feel like at some point they'll combine the three again in the near future.

It doesn't matter with RCS or universal profile. If carriers follow the protocol that's 1.0 or higher ANY messaging app will work included ones that are "preinstalled" with a device. I don't see why Google is taking flack for something that benefits us regardless of they controlled it or not. Shoot if you wanted to you can build out a small server of your own and it should interlope with any persons using Universal profile and bypass major carriers(see Android messages with work around as an example) provided you use Universal Profile. Samsung, and Google have their own servers and they are interloping. Sprint already uses 2.0+, T-Mobile uses 1.0(upgrading to 2.0 probably when merger completes), and be ready for multiple devices.
https://www.gsma.com/futurenetworks/rcs/universal-profile/
https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-and-google-collaborate-on-rcs-messaging-for-android
So when carriers roll out UP 2.0 or newer doesn't matter what messaging app you use. The stock or preinstalled will work as that's one of the requirements much like SMS is.
Personally I use Signal because of encryption. That's all I really care about.
