T-Mobile Carrier Aggregation speed issues (in Irvine) - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

I am a T-Mobile customer in So-Cal (San Diego and Irvine)
In San Diego, I have no issues, it seems to connect in "normal" 4G, and I got super-fast data speeds, all the time, everywhere...
In Irvine, I seems to connect with Carrier Aggregation (4G+), and data speeds are awful (see pic), data is barely usable...
Anyone else with the issues? (Where are you located?)
Anyone in Irvine with a Oneplus 3 without the issue?
Thanks

[Q] Possible Roaming Problem?

Hi All,
I live in Kansas where in a lot of places service can be poor or not existent. While visiting my family and my girlfriends family over Christmas, who live in two different areas in Southeast Kansas, where both phone and 4g/3g/1x data signal does not exist from Verizon. US Cellular is the main carrier for service in both areas with great coverage and I noticed that my new galaxy nexus did not automatically connect to the US Cellular network in either location for roaming. I was left with no connectivity at all for the entire weekend
My question is there a reason why my galaxy nexus did not automatically connect to the US Cellular network to roam?
Also is there a way to force my phone to connect to US Cellular when I am in these dead zones for Verizon?
Thanks in advance?
As a side note, I have the Data Roaming checked in the Mobile Network Settings and I have the System Select set to Automatic.
Well I broke down and called Verizon Wireless technical support today.
The tech that I spoke with checked the two areas that I go to and confirmed that Verizon is mostly non existent. He then went on to say that the phone should roam in both areas and he did not have any answer as to why it was not roaming.
His solution to my problem was to purchase a prepaid US Cellular phone and forward my calls to it when I am in these areas. I must admit that it is a solution, but what an asinine thing for a Verizon employee to tell a subscriber. He also stated that Verizon just needs to add more towers in the area, which I can almost guarantee will never happen.
So as of now I am still at a loss as to why my phone is not roaming in these areas.

[Q] How do I know I'm on 4G?

I'm in Chicago (both in the city and suburbs), and my S3 always shows "3G" in the notification area.
I know AT&T has an LTE network here, so shouldn't it say 4G or LTE? Could this be a problem with my account--or even the phone?
Thanks.
somewhere in the settings should be a network selection to choose between GSM/LTE(4G) and GSM(3G) only....at least on the Verizon phones there usually is, of course it says CDMA/LTE(4G) or CDMA(3G) only

I have ATT GS3 and it says 4GLTE tiny icon, if you are sure you are in LTE zone and only getting 3g , call AT&T or go to their store , sim could be old/wrong and or your account was not properly activated.
When i got my GS3 i wasnt getting any data at all , called AT&T and they sorted it out.
Run speedtest see what you getting ?
I have at&t in chicago as well. I live up in lake county and work in des plaines. I was also at navy pier a few weeks ago. Never had anything other than 4g or LTE. I literally have never seen the 3g icon on my phone

Thanks for the replies. I'll give AT&T a call.
I did run speedtest, while the phone was displaying 3G. the download speed was 7686 and upload 5704.
Well, I called AT&T and they couldn't find any problem. After 20 minutes, they said, "There's a network outage reported in Chicago, so that must be it." I asked how long the outage has lasted, and she said 17 hours. But I've had the phone for four days, and have never seen anything but 3G.
At any rate, they said I would have to call back in a couple of days. That conveniently got the rep off the phone.
I live in a 3G area, and it says 4G on my phone. Makes me feel like they are BSing us to believe 4G is everywhere.
Only time it has been off of 4G is when I"m in an Edge area. Speaking of which, I found it interesting that while driving up I90 in Wyoming (didn't look like anything was there for miles and miles), the data speeds were great. I was so surprised. Driving the much busier highways in the midwest, it is Edge, and it sucks.
Sorry...went off topic.

Your account does need to be flagged as LTE or you won't get LTE service. I'm up in Gurnee and all over Chicagoland has pretty good LTE coverage.
Also, check your APN that you're on the "PTA" and not the older APN settings. If you see anything about cingular wap, you're on the old one.
I recommend going to an AT&T store, it's harder to blow you off when you're up in their face.
I have friends in Aurora, Lombard, Lyons and I used to work downtown; I always had great LTE signal out and about as well as my home area of Gurnee/Libertyville.
Lastly, AT&T distinguishes between "4G" which is HSPA+ and "4G LTE" which is their LTE network. Unless you're running a custom ROM with different icons, you'll have an E for edge (2.5G, total ****), 3G for a 3G area that hasn't been upgraded, 4G for a 3G area that's been "backhaul upgraded" to HSPA+ and 4G with a little LTE beneath it for an LTE area.
For me, I can tell speed-wise between "4G" and "4G LTE" mostly by the upload speed. HSPA+ (4G) I never see above 1.2Mbps or so, whereas on LTE I get up to 5Mbps roughly. Sad story is the LTE network in the Chicago area is the slowest of their LTE networks that I've seen anyway. I get so jealous of people in TX and whatnot that get like 24Mbps!
Sorry for the rambling...
One weird thing...when I click on my results in speedtest, it lists the network as LTE, even though the icon always shows 3G.
So maybe it's connecting to LTE, but not showing the correct icon? Does a download speed of 7686 seem faster than 3G?
To follow up, in case this helps anyone...
I spent another half hour on the phone with AT&T--level 1 and level 2 tech support. (The level 2 guy was much less informed than the level 1 woman.) Their bottom line was that I should exchange the phone.
However, when I use the network signal info app, it says I'm on the LTE network. So, I think I have an icon problem, not an actual network connection problem.
I think I'll just live with it, rather than exchange the phone.

Getting sprint 4g lte in Lansing mi

Anyone else?
I'm curious what Sprint's LTE speed tests?.
I am never in Lansing, but in Howell Mi for the last month LTE works. Today I now notice it works in Northville Plymouth as well on and off. So seems they are slowing rolling it out.
As for speeds, Download 6.40 Mbps, upload .85. Not sure if these are common as today is the first day LTE is available where I am (work).
That data speed is GOLD on Sprints network, at least from my past experience with them. Congrats.:good:

5G Question

Before I get this phone, I have a question about 5G. I currently have an A71 that I will be returning (for a variety of reasons) and the 5G implementation is terrible. I'm hoping this isn't an across-the-board issue for 5G phones this year... Here is the problem I see:
What in 5G mode, I will sometimes get a signal and sometimes not. I'll do a Google search and it says "no internet". Then I turn off 5G and change it to LTE/3G/2G and suddenly I'm fine and surfing the net without any issues. I expected a 5G phone to use 4G LTE whenever 5G isn't strong, seamlessly. Not report 'no internet'.
Anyone experience that here with this phone?
Note: My provider is T-Mobile, that I don't suspect that should make a difference in how network switching occurs.
I live in a fringe area where T Mobile 5G rarely pops up. When in the downtown area I get 5G constantly. I don't see any jaw dropping speed difference between 5G and LTE. What I do notice in either mode is data is received in bursts. This is noticable during app updates and speed tests. I never get a "no internet". Switching between 5G and LTE is seamless.
used to have the same issues but there were some system updates that i think fixed them, also my 5g coverage has improved - so i dont have these issues anymore but i think is something that depends a lot on the network rather than the phone
T-Mobile definitely doesn't have the same coverage in my area as Big Red. It's pretty sporadic. There are times that I show a full 5G signal but pages don't load.
I'm hoping the Sprint merger will improve things. Although I don't think T-Mobile's low frequency 5G will deliver the fastest speeds, I'm hoping it will give better penetration in buildings.
Fortunately, I have Comcast/Xfinity for both home and work Internet, so I can use their hotspots.

From a quick call with Tmo tech people, even when the phone shows the 5G icon, do not expect to have any better speeds than LTE. Only if you are on the mmWAVE frequencies you may see higher speeds, and those are not really deployed anywhere than center of few cities. Then be aware those bands can not go through walls.. so most likely you may be in the 600Mhz band (U71) which is 37 to 100 Mbit only, but at least will have better coverage than LTE.
Bottom line- the 5G era is now a toddler learning to walk, not run.. I get most of my high speed over WiFi as before..
