I know this has been discussed before but I can't find anything recent on the topic...I am rooted with rbox latest pre-rooted rom and have a 500 gig usb drive attached to my Fire TV 1. the drive is working great and I have moved Kodi to it and everything. I can even move apps to it through the Fire TV Manage Apps setting, but is there a recent way to install and or move all game data to an external usb drive? I'm on rbox 5.2.1.1
thanks

Is this possible? I have searched and all I could find was a guide to use a USB device as internal storage on the AFTV 1st gen.
I would like to use my AFTV2 for games (San Andreas, Emulators etc) but as everyone knows, once the data files are there for example, with GTA, most of the space is gone.

I currently don't have a fire tv 2 to test but this weekend I was having issue writing to external sd on rooted amazon fire tablet running fire nexus rom (lollipop). It requires xposed and you might need play services (not sure).
I used xinternal sd xposed mod then installed sdfix by nextapp from playstore. Not only could I write to sd but now I can put apps+data on external.
***But this is Fire OS you're using so the results might differ. Definetly worth a try unless someone has a better/easier method.
***Also I can't be certain it wasn't one or the other (sdfix or xinternal). Might just be one of them that solved my issue but since there were no ill effects I'll leave it as is...

You can use your USB (HD) for media only as for apps they can only be transferred to the SD card, this info if for firetv2 only.
If I remember correctly, FolderMount is what your after.
I think you can do it with an xposed module (obbonsd?) as well but I don't know how well it works on the AFTV2 though.
I only played about a little with FolderMount on my HUDL and it worked fine. I linked the obb folder to my external micro SD for game files and it worked fine.
Now that my ftv gen2 finally stopped working, no more adb access, HDMI,USB port gone, no more gen2 avail ,I had to get a FTV gen 3, I got it setup, kodi and few apps installed, setup with otg and 4port usb hub, using a 32gb usb flash drive, i havent a usb SDcard reader, i would assume it would be the same. ES file explorer sees and reads it fine, can access my files and kid cartoons just fine, FTV doesn't read or count it as storage in device, Kodi doesn't see or give me access to it usb drive... I was able to open a mp4 and use kodi to play it instead of ES player @ http ://127.0.0.1:59777/usb%2F1009%2F32%20USB%20%20%20%20%20... I tried to access files from USB with no success through kodi. Has anyone have or had success getting FTVgen 3 to detect the USB otg device storage? Or get kodi to access the otg USB ?
Format is fat32?
format fat32, Yah, well Tgellen did a auto load at boot otg on ftv stick gen 1 root) working, didn't work with my current Fire OS 6.2.1.2 , maybe it can after someone finds a root access. Other than that no complaints about Ftv gen 3, very stable, Iam not worried about leaving on and coming back hrs later to a crashed recovery error screen like on my gen2
Is usb debugging disabled?
---------- Post added at 01:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:25 AM ----------
The issue you're running into is physically mounting the drive with the Fire OS. Make sure usb debug is disabled and I've also had issues with drives formatted by other OS. I ended up having to wipe the drive and format it with my phone to have the android directories for the fire OS to recognize it.
I have tried multiple san disc usb drives, but ever since amazon did the newest update when i am in adb and type in the sm list-disks i get three different listings
8,32
8,16
8,0
Not sure why, and dont know what to do. Did the same thing with a brand new usb out of the box.
Any help will be great

Have you partitioned your drive?
8,32 corresponds to a 32gb drive
8,16 corresponds to a 16gb drive
And so on so forth...

I've found the best way to deal with external storage on firetv is to use an app called ADM download manager, simply goto settings and select your drive and you can download content straight to and stream from external storage.
*I brought a 32 GB USB and I formatted it by (Fat32) I attached the formatted USB to a OTG Adapter and my fire stick and the Fire Stick (software version is 77/3027) the (Serial Version G070VM1190450T03. ) The Fire Stick doesn't recognize the USB Drive in the EZ File exploder. Is there anything that I can do to fix this problem? Do I have the right Firestick for this method?* Thank You

I have tried that option 1 errors out with
Error: java.lang.IllegalStateException: java.util.concurrent.TimeoutException: Thread Binder:614_15 gave up waiting for partitionMixed after 180000ms
Option 2 worked but when doing pm move- command it never works
I managed to get further but keep getting error -6 when trying to move to usb device
Edit. I got it working as far as storage and moving apps over on a 32gb usb drive from 2010. It does not auto put to usb drive though

What model are you using 4k mantis? Is it to run kodi on externak drive/USB?
Try using advanced download manager and using that to access automatically

Not sure but all my firesticks have a bug it seems amazon refuses to fix that when fresh formatted and leaving it on the storage goes to very low space quickly. So far with the same apps installed I got bit more on 1 stick that been unplugged longer. Both are 4k firesticks. Not sure what version. I think gen 1 since i dont think gen 2 4k firestick ever came out.
One of my usb drives might just not work for firestick as playing downloaded videos from it lag.
I have 2 firesticks with USB adapters. Recently both firesticks refused to recognize any USB flash drive (I'm using VLC media player). The same flash drive I have been using for a long time. I tried reformatting the drive (FAT32) but no luck. I suspect that a software update has caused the problem. Is there a known way to roll back the software and prevent updates?

I am having the same issue. USB storage was working fine but after update system is not recognising the storage. I can see the usb stick and copy files using adb so it is not a hardware issue.
Hi everyone. I have 2 firesticks (lite and 3rd gen). I tried to expand storage on both with remote ADB shell. I used the same method and succeeded on one of them (lite). Remote ADB shell in the 3rd gen stick refused to recognize usb flash drive. Does anybody know why, please?
I have the same problem firestick 4k 3rd gen fully updated, tried two otg cables, many different drives and will not recognise it through xplorer, adb console or system settings. Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks for the reply but I have tried all of the above suggestions and nothing works.
I have read every thread online and carried out every instruction and now I am at a dead end, very frustrating.
The stick is on fireOs 6.2.9.4
Thank you for taking the time to reply carolljeny223 much appreciated, I've contacted customer support and waiting reply.
I think you have to cut the power to the firestick , say for about 30 seconds.
I found this out with my firestick running on sofware 7.
When I put the USB memory stick in the port the firestick recognised it. A message prompt came up with an option to format the usb stick either for (a) Apps, or (b) Storage e.g., movies, documents, etc.
Only when the firestick recognises the memory stick will it then show USB storage in the My Firestick settings.
Ensure your USB memory is formated to fat32 on your computer if your memery stick is 32gb or below. Anything about format it to exfat32.
Fire OS: 5.2.7.6 (659654620) - sloane rom
Apps: Total Commander, ES File Manager, Kodi
Hard Drive: Passport 2TB
About a week ago, I was running 5.2.1.1 for a few years and with Paragon NTFS+ and didnt have any issues. I removed my Passport drive and then updated it with content and plugged it back into my USB powered hub and my Fire TV2 didnt see the drive. Its happened like this once before and a simple disconnect and reconnect fixed the issue but not this time. I have uninstalled a number of different Paragon NTFS apps (from plugins, to different versions), Stick Mount 3.50, NTFS Mounter, and my FireTV2 no longer sees the drive. I thought I would upgrade the ROM on my FireTV2 and have done this as now I am on the above rom and the same issue is happening. The OS does indicate the drive isnt FAT32 so its seeing the drive but not mounting it despite installing these different apps.
I have enjoyed the Fire TV2 for a number of years with no issues and for the life of me, cant get it to read NTFS external drives.
I have tested the drive in my desktop and laptop, both see the drive without any issues. I have tried different ports on the USB hub and nothing is working. The same hub can read FAT32 without any issues but I have files that are 10GB+ and require NTFS. I have reformatted the drive and copied content over again, ran disk defrag on the drive and the Fire TV2 for whatever reason isnt working.
If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears...
