Is this possible? I have searched and all I could find was a guide to use a USB device as internal storage on the AFTV 1st gen.
I would like to use my AFTV2 for games (San Andreas, Emulators etc) but as everyone knows, once the data files are there for example, with GTA, most of the space is gone.

I currently don't have a fire tv 2 to test but this weekend I was having issue writing to external sd on rooted amazon fire tablet running fire nexus rom (lollipop). It requires xposed and you might need play services (not sure).
I used xinternal sd xposed mod then installed sdfix by nextapp from playstore. Not only could I write to sd but now I can put apps+data on external.
***But this is Fire OS you're using so the results might differ. Definetly worth a try unless someone has a better/easier method.
***Also I can't be certain it wasn't one or the other (sdfix or xinternal). Might just be one of them that solved my issue but since there were no ill effects I'll leave it as is...

You can use your USB (HD) for media only as for apps they can only be transferred to the SD card, this info if for firetv2 only.
If I remember correctly, FolderMount is what your after.
I think you can do it with an xposed module (obbonsd?) as well but I don't know how well it works on the AFTV2 though.
I only played about a little with FolderMount on my HUDL and it worked fine. I linked the obb folder to my external micro SD for game files and it worked fine.

Has anyone found a fix for the RW issue with external media storage? My OUYA automounts all USB storage devices I have, but I can't write to anything; the closest I've seen to a fix is making the OUYA mount as an SD for App2SD capabilities (I just want to write...).

Do you mean general things like emulator saves and such (or transferring from the OUYA to external for data) or transferring apps to the external?
In the case of the first, you have to have it in FAT32 format. I think someone got OTG Helper to work to change that, but not sure.
If you're talking about transferring apps, there's a way on the unofficial forms, but I'm not sure about it.

I'm talking about just raw data like saves and pictures. It is a fat32 format, formatted it myself before I put my ROMs on it.. Guess I'll just try again.

This thread http://forums.ouya.tv/discussion/1745/fix-for-usb-flash-or-hard-drive-not-supported completely resolved my external drive problems (even 1tb powered external drive with AVCHD files for XBMC) until yesterday's firmware update.
Now no joy....even after re-rooting and re-editing the file.
UPDATE: Apparently the "fix" described in the link above is no longer necessary. I reverted to the vold.fstab file that came with the most recent firmware upgrade and my USB devices are once again available, even on XBMC.
Hi!
Sorry if that's been asked before, my search yielded no results.
Because of the low memory on the AFTV, caching a movie (4gb+) is not possible.
When selecting cache folder as an external memory folder (mounted using Stickmount) to /sdcard/usbstorage/sd** I'm getting "Video File Too Big" error.
After alot of googling it should correspond with no writing permissions to this path (as long as the sd indeed have enough space - it does)...
Did anyone succeed to watch a movie on Popcorn Time on the Fire TV?
The card is NTFS.
Thanks!
I have been able to watch movies without any issues. My ext usb powered hd is fat32. You can also try with ext.
How to install Popcorn Time
So does popcorn time work perfectly on the fire tv? What are the steps to get it installed and working properly?
1- sideload popcorn time apk?
2- Does it need a mouse and keyboard or will the remote work?
3- Does it need external storage for the cache?
Thanks!

Are you using StickMount to mount the drive?
And did you change the path of the cache folder to it?
Thanks!

Sideload the android version.
Needs a mouse.
Caching depends on how much free space you got on the AFTV... you may use internal memory and SHOULD (read my post) be able to use External HD as well.
Hello,
I have a 3 TB external drive (seagate) and the new update from Amazon that allows you to connect via USB . I formatted my drive to Fat32 using a 3rd party Program because windows 8.1 I guess only allows you to format in exFat but I need fat32 right? no matter what though EXfat or Fat32 I only have 299MB of 299MB its not seeing 3TB. does anyone know what I am doing wrong here? Also what can I do to move the app+data to my External HDD say for a games I download from Amazon. the whole point is to be able to move game data thats what the people want....well that and downloaded content. Anyway is there an app that moves data and app or just data without root?
Thanks,

You probably have a hidden partition on the drive. See here for more info: http://www.aftvnews.com/what-to-do-if-the-amazon-fire-tv-only-sees-197mb-of-a-usb-drive/

I did have one thank you! I ended up using a this link here witch tells you how to delete hidden partitions http://www.brighthub.com/computing/hardware/articles/72858.aspx but i would not have known without your help. after that I used this http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm to turn it into Fat32 but the Highest it does is 2TB witch it a lot honestly for fat32.
Now all I need to know is how to move my application data to an external drive to free up space without root???
I have a 2 TB external drive (slim) and the Fire TV formatted it by itself.
Due to very low free and total storage space on the AFTV, I don't have enough free space to cache HD movies (I got about 1.5gb free but the movies themselves could be 6gb+ in 1080p).
The problem is as is:
Pulsar (Kodi addon) can't cache to FAT32 , and the Fire TV system will mount ONLY FAT32 sticks...
I used to use StickMount, but ever since the Amazon Firmwire update to enable External Memory support, Stickmount broke (folders appear as files without formats...).
Is there any way to mount Other filesystems in Amazon's Firmwire? (ext4 \ ntfs...)
OR is there any way to REMOVE the Fire TV's native support for External Memory so I could again use StickMount?
Thanks for the help!
EXT3/EXT4 won´t work. Tried this some days ago in hope to be able to start su or dd from external drive with full rights (silly, I know but at least for me a try worth...).
It seems via ADB shell for me like it is a known filesystem which is mounted as extUSB but access is restricted. NTFS was also not working but this was not really surprising me.
And as for disabling Fire TV External Memory detection?
Or alternatively fixing StickMount?

I'm pretty certain trying to disable the amazon processes would be a waste of time. You could roll back the firmware.
Also, I used to mount my drives with adbfire instead of stickmount. In addition to that, you could use busymount which essentially turns your external drive to internal storage. But I can't offer much help there as I never used it. There's plenty of resources on xda though.
Hi everyone,
I see connecting USB via OTG to Firestick 4K doesn't allow it to be converted as internal storage unlike other Android devices.
Which is obviously every firestick owner must be looking for to expand the Internal storage.
A humble request to all the Android Developers here.. Could you please find a solution to this?
Thanks in advance
I was able to get it to work by following this tutorial, it allows you to have part of the USB as internet and another part external. Apps seem to run a little slower, but still work fine.
After formatting USB correctly I used the app2sd app
to move apps to adoptable storage, as the firestick doesn't have a migrate option built in.

Can you please provide a step by step guide ?
In apps2sd , when you select a app to move, it just takes you to the firestick --- settings --- manage apps section. There is no option there to move any apps to USB.
Can you link the app you used please ?
Sent you a PM as well.
Thanks[
In app2sd you click on link apps to SD card. Then click on the app you want to move. Then click the menu button in the top right corner, and click move to adoptable, or move to SD, I'm not sure which it was.

This solution might be work (Magisk installition required): https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/magisk-amazon-firetv4k-ntfs-f2fs-ext4-t3991981

Apps2SD is working pretty well for me if I only use the file linking option, not Adoptable stoarage. My device has more room and feels faster than when using adoptable storage. I also don't like that it changes your default install location to external.
*On a rooted firestick 4k, flash this kernel to get f2fs access.
*Backup your files to a computer disk drive.
*Format your USB drive into 2 partitions: 1. Storage (fat32) 2. Extended (f2fs).
**I used Gparted while booted into the FireISO USB drive I made to unlock the bootloader and root the Firestick. You can also do it in Apps2SD but I had trouble with it.
**I made my first partiton 105Gb, and second 10Gb.
*Attach the USB drive to the Firestick and install Apps2SD apk. Open it and go into Settings. Change dev/block option to say "/dev/block/sda" without quotes.
*Back out of settings and go to the top optioin: Link Apps to SD. Then open the icon menu in the Left corner. Choose Recreate Mount Script. Say OK and Yes to all prompts. Wait until the script is successfully created. Reboot.
*Last link some apps to your SD card. I don't suggest system apps or anything that accesses system apps like Titanium Backup. For apps that slow down a lot (your browser), link everything EXCEPT the Data folders. This is often the largest folder, but the performance hit is not worth the space you save.
Hope this helps someone.
does Pretoriano80 kernel work with "Stick Mount" or do I need to remove this ?
2nd gen firestick
Does the app2sd work with a 2nd gen fire stick? Any info is appreciated. FYI I have a USB thumb drive not a sdcard. Will a sdcard work if using a sdcard on a USB sdcard reader?
