Since Tmobile is not allowed to sell new Note7s yet, I want to purchase one from Verizon. However, I heard that some Note7 features are removed by Verizon, so I want to use the firmware of Tmobile. Can I do that without root and without any other side effect? Can I get OTA from Tmobile in the future?
Yes for flashing t-mobile. I don't know about the ota

Do you mean there will not be any other side effect for flashing? So basically after flashing it is the same as the ones come from tmobile, right?
Anyone know whether I can get OTA or not?

If I'm coming from AT&T MF3 build on SGH-1337 can take some sort of T-Mobile OTA and root the T-Mobile build/rom?

Unfortunately, no.
From my understanding, if you flash anything that isn't officially signed on a MF3 device, you will brick it.

But wouldn't the T-Mobile OTA be signed?

Right, but technically our T-Mobile Firmware is a downgrade, as we haven't had an update in a while, which is pretty much the same as trying to downgrade to the previous version before the bootloader lock, which again, causes a hard brick. (This coming from what I've read in the AT&T forums.)

If/when T-mobile gets an update do you think I could use that update and root it for bootloader unlock?

I'm actually not sure. The T-Mobile's variant never came with a bootloader locked. In theory, if it was possible to ODIN a pure stock T-Mobile firmware on an AT&T S4, I'd image the bootloader would get overwritten as well, no? But messing with bootloaders is a very very dangerous game.

Hello all,
Sorry if this was asked before but i couldnt find it in the search as its coming up with numerous returns on something else.
Anyways, I bought an AT&T s3 rooted and i was able to put it back to stock with Android 4.0.4. After i put it back to stock i got it unlocked to use on T-Mobile.
My questions are,
how do i update the software to the latest version. do i update it with AT&T software or do i use the T-Mobile software version?
If I update it again will it get locked again?
Rooting is not really an option as it is for my daughters use
thank you in advance for any replies,
V

Once your phone is unlocked, it stays unlocked always even after firmware upgrades. If the phone is rooted, it means you can install custom firmware. If you want to stay on stock, however, you should stick to the AT&T versions. With a valid AT&T sim and as long as the IMEI is clean, you should be able to get OTA upgrade to the latest version (currently 4.3) via WiFi. I didn't have any problem doing this on my unlocked AT&T even with an unfunded albeit valid sim.
You can't install a custom ROM just by having root. You need to have a custom recovery installed in order to install a custom ROM.
Look under About Phone to determine whether the phone is identified as an i747 or t999.
thanks for the replies.
I know how to root a phone but I dont want it to be rooted as its for my daughter. thanks.
@audit13 - model # shows samsung-sgh-1747, so should i update it with AT&T software even though i am going to use it on T-Mobile.
thanks

Is it running stock AT&T software? If it is, you can update it but you may not get 3g data on the phone without enabling aws.

Do you have a data plan with T-Mobile? If you are not in an area with T-Mobile's 4G, you may one get Edge unless you enable the 1700 mhz band on the phone.

If I recall correctly it is around page 28 or so there is a post by tmokeith that has everything you would need to enable the 1700mhz aws wcdma band. There is some risk involved so please read, read and read it again.

What is currently the best rom to flash for the pure stock experience that will work on Verizon? I am about to exchange my phone and wanted to flash this to try out before I get my replacement.
Is there a universal version yet?
The bootloader is locked, so flashing a custom ROM is not possible. I assume that is what you are talking about. There is a thread on rooting that you may want to take a look at. Haven't done it yet, but will after I get my replacement.

No I was actually talking about flashing a stock carrier rom. Who has the least bloat and changes? I flashed AT&T and it was OK but the voice didn't work right so I had to flash back.

The canadian rom is 100% stock. I can't get it to work on Verizon though
You think Samsung would supply a vanilla non bloat version we could flash. Would be a nice option. Honestly I don't think Samsung knows how terrible touch wiz runs on the snapdragon here in the states with all the bloat.
If you use the root method posted by OvrDriVE here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3461232
You will have stock Verizon with Sprint recovery. After you're rooted, you can remove all the bloat you want or just disable it.
I picked up a at&t phone off eBay and I work off a regional carrier that doesn't have this phone. Is there any generic firmware that will still get updates like a blanket Motorola version? Or am I stuck with rooting and using someone's packaged rom to get away from at&t customized stock rom?
Been a while since I've rooted and changed firmwares on my phones so I apologise for the noob question.
Thanks
If you are talking about normal OTA update then you should be fine
in a few days i will test flashing the retail firmware to my at&t device and will let you know more then if it works or not.
Awesome. Thanks. Yes would love to remove the at&t apps and branding from this phone.
Any luck??
still waiting for my new device in the mail.
I have a ATT N976U note 10+5g which i'm using on verizon , it works great but each time att releases an update for it i cannot get it over ota and verizon only has updates for the N976V version. Does any one know where and how i can manually download the att updates to install them with odin afterwards ?

Years ago, I had the same issue with a Note 2,an AT&T version, but using it on another network (T-Mobile).
I had to go so far as to getting a month's worth of service w/pre-paid AT&T to connect to their servers to pull the update. Same a bit later with an LG device.
Fast forward to a year or two ago & some state this isn't necessary, but, it sounds like the same is holding true for you.
My suggestion is to find someone with an active AT&T SIMCard, see if you can borrow it to pull the update.
Another suggestion is to use Samsung's desktop PC tool Smart Switch, see if that works.
Otherwise, I'm stumped, unless you're familiar with Odin & someone here can locate the latest firmware to flash.
This should help with why your encountering difficulty finding (and a way to obtain) AT&T firmware.
