Android is notorious--at least in my opinion--for having nowhere near enough granularity in the volume control. With only fifteen steps in the Media volume, music is often either thunderously loud or far too quiet, with no happy medium.
Sure, I did what most folks do and used MusicFX/DSPManager equalizer to boost volume across the board slightly, but while it gives me a decent volume for most of my music, it doesn't solve the problem, it just bandaids it. Each volume increment is too great a leap.
I did notice that a Nexus S ROM, AOSP+, had this mod at one point and I was wondering if it was possible to make a universal CWM-flashable zip that would enable a Galaxy Nexus running an AOSP ROM to gain the benefit of having more granularity in the volume control.
I'm also wondering why the hell Google thought only 15 steps was a good idea...
I'd like this too.
It's not just Android, I find many phones and mp3 players don't provide enough steps in volume.
You can change the amount of incall volume steps by altering "ro.config.vc_call_vol_steps=" in the build.prop to whatever you want (not tried this in ICS though, it might be different), but I don't think changing the amount of system volume steps would be that easy, it would probably have to done from source.

It's the number of steps in the Media volume I want to change. In-call volume needs to be turned up all the way in order for me to hear it, anyway.

Use that myself, and it works fine.
However in our roms it's called array_9.

Would this potentially break the screen-off volume controls to skip tracks? I'm game to give it a shot myself later on, but it'd be nice to know if it interferes with any other mods.
This is exactly what I want (for AOKP ROM hehe). I was at the gym listening to Google Music with headphones and kept going between two volume levels..one was too loud and the other too quiet, no perfect medium. Such a stupid thing of Google to overlook.
Or we need voodoo

No, it doesn't affect the volume rocker track skip.

I've modded the framework.jar file but I haven't actually put it in yet, because I've noticed something else that's rather odd. My GN will more often than not bump up two volume notches every time I press the volume key!
I'm not really sure what's going on here. Maybe I need to reboot, but when I press up or down on the volume rocker, about 80% of the time it moves by two steps rather than just one.
Edit: Applied the modified framework.jar. No problems so far, but my volume key still seems to skip two steps (though now the steps are half the size) after the first press. There's a pattern to it. The first press of the key will only increment once, but all subsequent presses in the same direction will increment twice. So if you have the volume set at 15/30 and press up once, it'll go to 16/30, but if you press again, it'll go to 18/30 instead of 17/30, and continue to go up by two every time until you press Volume Down. Pressing Volume Down at 18/30 will reduce it to 17/30, but then any subsequent Volume Down presses will decrement by two.
This is annoying, though it does seem to explain why I was fairly easily able to find a happy median volume on my Nexus S with 15 volume steps, but never quite was able to on the GN without a lot of ****ery. Because when I'm pressing the damn volume keys, it's not always only incrementing by one! >.<
Though now with the 30-step volume applied, the "skip two" effect is basically nullified. Still, I'd like it to work properly.

I will try and look into it later today when I get home. I will take a look at the source and see if any other values control the increments.

Just wanted to let you know that before you start plowing through a lot of code, the "skip a step" volume key bug is related to a mod included in the ROM I'm using, the mod that allows you to skip tracks by long-pressing the volume key while the screen is off.
Disabling that functionality immediately restored the volume keys to normal.

Nice to know. Took a look at the AudioService.java file yesterday, but couldn't find anything that could explain the behaviour.
Hello, a few hours ago my Nexus 7 suddenly started acting as if I was continuously pressing the volume down key. I could not even power down. Thinking I got a nasty software bug, I installed an app from play that let me reboot. It immediately rebooted into recovery though, just as if I had been holding down the volume key while it booted.
I have slimkat installed with twrp v2.7.0.0. I installed a recovery from before the skimkat installation (stock with root and twrp). But it too rebooted into twrp again (as if I was tapping volume down while it rebooted). So I tried to reboot into the bootloader to see what that would do (it allows you to use the volume keys to make selections). I got to the bootloader and sure enough, it was cycling through the options like I was tapping volume down over and over.
Help? Any ideas? I have pulled off the back cover and cleaned around the volume and power keys. It does not appear anything is wrong with them. Is it a software issue? Hardware? Any help would be appreciated.
Ok just one update on this issue. I think this is likely a hardware issue. I managed to disconnect the side key cable for the volume and power keys while it was booting, and it booted up just fine.
I am not sure what is wrong with the keys, but the fact that the tablet will boot into system when they are not attached tells me I probably need to replace them. Just FYI for the unlucky person who might also behaving this problem.
I am also experiencing volume problems. Mine is software related I think. The problem I have is that all volume and sound will disappear as if I have muted all sound. I have no touch sounds, no YouTube sound, no music audio, nothing at all from the speakers or the headphone jack. A reboot will fix it, but after say 10 minutes of use the sound goes again. The volume controls do nothing. Completely stock 4.4.3.
Does anyone else have this issue?
This is the first nexus phone I've had, so I'm still learning. On my SGS3, I could pull down the tray and tap the speaker icon to mute. Is there any way to do that on the N5x? I don't see an option to add it to the tray, but there are many times I need to do this quickly. Any advice? I haven't gotten my cables yet, so I'm still locked and unrooted.
Thanks
I've always thought the simplest way is to use the volume rocker. Hold down till vibrate. That's vibrate mode. If you don't want that then push volume rocker down one more time. It will go into a do not disturb mode that you can configure to your liking either allowing alarms only or complete silence.
Hi,
I am trying to increase the ringer volume using the volume up button but it is not working. Whenever I press the volume up button the volume indicator comes up but remains at zero. Even when I slide the indicator over at higher values the moment I press the volume up button it returns to zero. I restart the phone and the problem seems to go away for a couple of hours and then automatically goes to zero again without me touching it. Anyone else has this issue? Any ideas on how to fix it? The phone stays in vibration mode only and I miss calls because of this.
Thanks.
Strange problem, my volume button seems to work fine and I cannot reproduce the issue. You may have to try a full wipe and reinstall the ROM.
Hi thanks for the reply! I am on the original elephone rom. I only updated through the elephone application, but this issue appear much later!
Perhaps try flashing an older ROM again or try clean install of eragon ROM, if problem persists then maybe it's a hardware issue like a sticky volume switch.

I somehow doubt that. As OP said "Whenever I press the volume up button the volume indicator comes up but remains at zero."
For me it sounds more like the switch is working but there is a software problem.
@ OP: Have you tried e.g. to watch a video or listen to music an the higher or lower the volume? Is it working there at least?
I am using a rooted cricket h634 LG stylo 5.1, WITHOUT custom ROM installed, I am also experiencing issues with my volume up button, I have removed bloatware but that is the extent of what I've done so far. My volume wrks if I use the drop down tray, volume down works, but not up.
This might be the wrong portion of the forum, but I've got the latest Viper rom installed on my 10
I found that my volume down button doesn't affect volume at all, ever. It turns the screen off.
I've even dug through every option, toggled everything on or off testing one thing at a time, and it still does that. Only volume up brings up the volume window. It's obviously rom related, since it doesn't do that on stock (of course it doesn't)
If anyone has any suggestions, or a fix for this, let me know where to look.
Thanks!
