Oneplus 3 overheating? - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Hi guys, Im very concerned about in the last week I felt the phone gets constantly hot, especially when using wi fi or fat and I've noticed it gets very hot when using walking dead no mans land game connected to wi fi, and even when browsing.
Previously I've used the phone with heavy multitasking and gaming and never had this issue.
Even when charging now I felt the phone get unusually hot.
Before I've notice this heating issue I've flashed and tested a lot of roms, and finally back to OrionOS 2.6.1, this is my actual rom.
I'm with phone for two months and neves had this issue
Any idea of a possible cause and solution???
I'm very concerned because I know the effect of the heating on battery life and overall performance.
I've upload some screenshots of the normal temperature of the phone with gaming or extense browsing.
PD: when I've noticed the heating issue I've flashed a lot of roms to see if is a rom related issue but same issue with all roma even with stock Oxygen and stock kernel.

lol 40 degrees is hot? seriously? my s7 reaches 50+ .. oneplus 3 used to reach 60s :|

Flash a new modem. That should fix it.

Yes, my previous phone s6 edge used to work over 50+ mostly of time and nubia z9 even hotter temperatures but OP3 with almost two months of use never used to pass over 40 with about 10 different roms I've used.. That's why I'm concerned now, but maybe it's most a subjective feeling of temperature.

Thanks for your quick response, Ill try flashing new modem.. I've read in other posts about some overheating issues related to network searching, so I've turn off network,, enter airplane mode, but with wi fi heating persists, i suspect it's something wi fi related.

It's pretty normal that your phone gets warm while playing games.

Dont know what you call overheating. The phone wont overheat due the thermal throttle. I would start complaining when your battery reaches 45+ (not when charging and using) and your CPU +75. But believe me it wont come that high!

40° is nothing to worry about,
And, gaming,
Of course it get hot when doing gaming...

Phone gets very HOT

I have had my Galaxy Nexus for a cupple of months now and I noticed that it get so ****ing HOT. I can feel that it burns a little bit in my pocket when the phone is there. The strange thing is that it gets this hot only when I am not connected to wifi or are at a place where the 3g connextion isn't that good, on the buss for example. So what do you guys think that I shuld do? Can I even return it now?
Thanks for answers

Are you going to try and return it?
Also could be the kernel i have the same problem though
The only time I have noticed my phone getting very hot is when I stream music or use Wifi-tether.
Mine gets very hot only when I'm downloading torrents and don't have a wifi connection.
What baseband are you on? Was trying to sort out my phones heat and accompanying drain for ages! Exactly the same symptoms (only when using 3g, particularly with poor signal.) . Turns out my issue was baseband. Switched from kk6 to kl1 and so much better. Might be worth experimenting.

Also it would only get hot like that is data connection is consistently working. You might want to also check if there are apps that are constantly connecting in the background that you don't really need.

Well yes I have apps that requires data connection like twitter but I think a Smart phone like Galaxy Nexus should be able to handle that without getting super hot.

Yeah, I'd definately give it a shot. I'm in UK and KL1 seems pretty good to me. Tried quite a few and ALL were better than kk6! Like a completely different phone after!

My old one used to do that as well and it was a radio hardware issue. Received a replacement and all is well. I was within the 1 year warranty.

It was actually my 2nd replacement. My first issue was with the phone bootlooping (not related to ROMs) after about 3 months after purchase (only rooted). It was that replacement when the radios sucked. Phone was always hot and it ate through a full charge in about 4 hours. The phone was going into a deep sleep when inactive (verified with CPUSpy) and the Phone was eating the wakelock (BetterBatteryStats) as it kept looking for a signal. Didn't matter which radios I used (4.0.2 or 4.0.4) the results were the same.
Turned that phone in stating just the phone was eating the battery looking for a signal (battery showed red for phone signal) and they sent another replacement. This one is ok (running Gummy 1.0.1 with 4.0.4 radios).
I can vouch for this. I usually have my wifi on at work and at home with no heat issues at all. But the last two nights I was at chili's which had no wifi so I turned my 3g on and within 10 mins of super slow browsing my phone was getting ridiculously hot. I read on another thread that if the 3g signal is low or weak then it will continuously ping the server which causes something inside to heat up very quickly whether its the radio or cpu. This is definitely an issue but I'm not sure if its fixable with a new kernel or radio flash.

Hello.
For several days I have exactly the same problem.
Since I install AOKP milestone 5 and franco.kernel milestone 3, my phone started strongly hot.
Temperatures can reach 66 degrees, and the rear cover gets really hot.
Is it a hardware defect or problem is in the settings or Rom/kernel?

[INFO][FIX] At least one overheating fix

Gnex comes with dual frequency WIFI radios 2.4GHz and 5.0 GHz, when active are known to interfere each other's signal causing problems. Stuff is abit technical, but bottom line is its better to operate in a single spectrum then both at the same time, which most WIFI router don't do.
Fix is to run wifi at a single spectrum either 2.4 or 5, for me i stick-ed with 2.4 (as i was not sure enabling 5GHz would turn on both) and it resolved over-heating near back camera.
Another advanced thing could be done, that is to avoid interference of other routers, near your router. google for softwares to scan nearby WIFI, see what channels they are using and set your router to use some other channel to kill any interference.
Read it yourself if you want to

it can't be facebook.... try and break it down into small pieces...
what do you use to access facebook, 3g or wifi or 2g ??
is there a signal prob at the place you usually use facebook.
like that
by the way i personally use friendcaster not facebook
There are routers that broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals, they are called concurrent dual band routers, but i will give your method a go, will report back later.

What "over-heating near back camera" is there to begin with? I know it can get a little warm next to the camera, especially on heavy 3G data use, but nothing is overheating. Overheating for me is when the heat gets too much causing problems like instability and crashes. But other than a slightly warm battery door there is no such thing on my phone. My Galaxy S and Moto Milestone showed the same behavior so it's nothing I worry about.

Same with me. My phone sees both WIFI connections but I prefer the 2.4 gHz over the 5 gHz. Never had a overheating problem. I'll take the OPs advice though just to be safe.
Hello,
A friend of mine has the GNEX, and he complains about overheating problem "specially using 3G & facebook app". The interesting part is, he didn't only mention the back-near-camera spot, he also says that it's getting overheated from the front "Top screen part".
Shall he worry about it? Maybe send it to maintenance to check?

Over Heating
My signal kept disappearing when I was sitting at home phone on desk.
I picked it up and it wasn't hot so I thought to install a signal booster app
which I should of new better they really dont work anyways. I ran the app
and it started over heating so bad that the screen was changing color.
I uninstalled app and rebooted and its fine now. So I beleive it will overheat
scanning for networks.

5 Ghz frequencies are much better to transfer large files over wireless, streaming hd movies and the like. Plus, the channels it operates on are less crowded than the traditional 2.4 Ghz. More info on Google.

So what are the negatives or bugs with the kitkat update?

I know one of the positives is now you can get the bootloader unlocked
But umm does it still have a speakerphone issue? And did it lose some GSM frequencies or something for tmobile/att? And as I understand it.. it was last I heard unflashable for page plus/verizon? Or is that changed obviously cause of bootloader unlock?

My speaker makes a popping noise for pretty much everything I do, though a bunch of people have reported that as well I think.
My battery has gone to hell. With almost everything Greenifyed, SetCPU underclocking to 594 MHz, I'm still losing about 5% an hour. When I turn Location and Google Now off, it's about the same, so I've just been leaving them on. I have a 5000 mAh batter pack that I carry everywhere with me now.

The popping noise used to not occur on my phone, but lately I've been hearing it now and then.
I'll second the mention of worse battery life (although it was also not-so-great on Jellybean). I haven't gone quite as far as vjaamm has, but I've tried to maintain a decent balance of apps and battery life and still can't push a full day. The phone goes from full to 20% in about 11 hours, with 80 minutes of having the screen on.
Cyanogenmod definitely does better on battery life, but the current nightlies still have some issues to sort out (broken Bluetooth audio, spotty Wi-Fi for some, weird speakerphone issue, unknown "My Number" for some and the consequential inability to send MMSes)
Everything is working perfectly fine for me on KitKat. I keep reading about others having worse battery life, but mine seems to be the same. It's not better or worse. I don't have any popping noises, random reboots or heat issues.

Did you installed Kitkat via RSD or OTA?? because the ota failed to me, and i installed KK from a zip that i found here
This morning, I was listening to come music on my commute to work. It's about an hour and 15 minutes. My battery was done to 83%. I wasn't playing any games, not looking online or texting. It's kinda crazy to drop that fast just from MP3's. It never did that on Jellybean.
I wasn't streaming them. I was using PowerAMP and just using songs on my SD Card.
I bet the phone just didn't like the music I was listening to. lol

KK installed using official file via RSD
Kitkat was working fine, and everything seemed to work as expected until recently when it started overheating, running the battery down really fast and then shutting off. When this behavior starts, you can't charge it from a car charger, a PC USB port, a portable battery pack and sometimes not even the official Verizon charger that came with the phone. All of this behavior started after KitKat. My daughter gave me her Razr M to use which still has JB on it, and I won't be upgrading it to KitKat. I don't think the M is quite up to Kitkat, or KitKat isn't optimized properly for the M. Cyanogenmod 11 runs much better, even with the few bugs it has.

(S20 Ultra) Wi-Fi slows down after a while?

Greetings, hope you're all staying safe
I got an S20 Ultra, Snapdragon variant. Everything about this phone is amazing honestly expect for one spot...
The Wi-Fi gets ridiculously slow after a while and I mean REAL slow speeds, It doesn't lose the Wi-Fi signal, actually it's almost full all the time.
The Power Plan is on High Performance, no power saving features enabled whatsoever whether in the Wi-Fi settings or anywhere else.
The only temporary solution is to disconnect the Wi-Fi connection and reconnect again and it'll work fine for a while and so on.
It's very frustrating since when it actually works fine the performance is pretty good, I've searched around and found a few people experiencing the same issue but no fix yet.
Hope someone out there figured out a fix, or Samsung releases and update to the fix the issue if it's a firmware bug.
Thanks and looking forward to your help.
Yup mine ultra disconnects completely and won't reconnect unless I turn wifi off and on again

My Note 9 and my brother's OnePlus both don't have this issue, all my other devices as well.
It's the phone unfortunately and many others experience the same thing but I don't know whether it's a software or a hardware issue.
Mentioned this before. It's really happening. No way to fix a hardware issue.
chieco said:
I've noticed on my S20+ another downside of this heating issue.
When the phone get's hot, the WI-FI speeds drop down to those of a 56k Modem.
I was transferring big files from my NAS via it's app DS File, and while the phone is cool speeds are perfect but, while the phone is hot the speeds drop extremely. A 1GB file that usually takes 30 seconds, now takes a few minutes to finish. Also while watching twitch vie browser and the phone get's hot and the becomes unwatchable because it begins buffering but never ever working unless you stop and let the phone cool down. Same if I use kodi to watch a video of my NAS... after a while the phone gets hot and buffering begins.
Not only the CPU get's throtelled or the phone decides to switch from 120Hz down to 60Hz... NO...! Even WI-FI gets throtelled. I ****ing hate my S20+ for this. **** Samsung for this hot pile of ****.

How did you conclude that it's a hardware issue and not a software one?
Also, it has nothing to do with the phone heating up as far as I can tell. It happens randomly even if the phone is just idling and you decided to use it.
That's from my experience. Your issue sounded the same. What makes you think it's a software issue?

I'd say for two reasons, first if it was a hardware issue it wouldn't appear randomly just like in my situation, it would be persistent instead.
The second and most importantly, is that toggling the Wi-Fi off and then on fixes the issue instantly for a while before it appears randomly again.

then we have a different issue. Hope it get's fixed for you. My problem on the other hand is a hardware issue.
My Exynos S20U dropped to really low WiFi speeds today for download only, upload was still full, I have 2x 5ghz routers and both were giving the same low download speed, was about to call ISP but then noticed the red recording light was on the sky box, it was eating all my Download speed, killed the recording and had full bandwidth again, probably unrelated but ideas to check other connected devices
Unfortunately still no actual fix for this issue, it appears randomly. My Note 9 on Android 8 and Note 10+ on Android 9 don't have this issue. I read that some other users with Note 10 and S10 on Android 10 experience the same issue so it's apparently a software issue.
Hope it gets fixed soon, everything about this phone is good so far but this issue is ruining the experience :/
I think i have this issue too!! I've been changing settings on my router for the last two weeks! Is this a software bug?

The good news is that it's a software bug as many have and still reporting this issue appearing after updating to Android 10 on the S10 and the Note 10. The bad news is that Samsung is doing nothing about it :/

Some app must be running in background. Check the battery page in settings for apps with abnormally high usage.
I installed eu rom same thing the phone is getting hot over 54 c and 50% of memory is always full

Install better battery stats and check which app is using up battery
Am telling you I tried two different roms and you tell me check the apps that are using battery
Well thats the most obvious thing to do if you have a battery drain or heat issue. Changing roms because of overheating is like using a tank to kill a cockroach. You should have looked into which apps are using the cpu the most and done something about them. On top of that, youre being rude to the only person whos trying to help you. Im sorry to say but you wont be getting any help atleast from me
If you are not sure which app causing the problem, backup your data and reset to factory setting. you nothing to do with the ROM. the stock ROM is the best ROM you can have right now for both security and performance.
as far as i know F3 does goes warm quickly when use some apps, as for gaming it goes hot quickly.. i even checked it goes to 45-50 sometimes, it happen after i get 12.5
after up 12.5.2 the heat still goes but not as hot as before... i think it's matter of firmware & heat management kind of suck on F3
