Factory data reset, selling my phone.

hey guys, so i'm going to sell my Galaxy Nexus, and i want to erase everything on it, should i do the option from backup and restore or from recovery ? i think the option from backup and restore is better because i want to erase apps data and music and photos, etc... i want to stay rooted and still have my custom ROM ( CM 10.1 ). another question, do i have to reflash gapps if i did a factory reset ? thx ^_^

If you run factory reset from within Android/stock recovery, /sdcard/ will be wiped;
Any CM rom is rooted;
gapps are flashed to the /system/ partition, thus they're not deleted by a factory reset. i believe you can just add a google account again in Settings, first time setup won't show up again (like it did after you flashed gapps the first time)

If you are already rooted it would be easier to just boot into Recovery Mode
Wipe all the data on the phone then reload the ROM and GApps, turn the phone off and it will be ready for the next person.
Make sure when you wipe you also format the /sdcard (this is where most of your data resides)

in my opinion, if you're going to sell your nexus, I think its better flash back to stock, not custom one :fingers-crossed:

Need help! Lost 29GB of storage after decrypting!

So I was running my Op3 encrypted since I bought it, and got sick of twrp asking me for password every time I want to flash something and I decrypted it, formated userdata, flashed ROM and flashed elementalx kernel to avoid encryption upon first boot, and now, my phone has only about ~24gb storage left, when I go into settings>storage my system is occupating about 29gb, can someone tell me how to solve this?

Try doing a factory reset.
Had a similar issue after returning my nexus 5x to stock (~10gb free instead of ~25). Factory reset from Settings > Backup and Reset fixed it. Not sure if a wipe from TWRP will do the same, but you can give it a shot.

Tried wipe from twrp, and fastboot format userdata, and it didnt work, nevermind, im back CB, waiting for Nougat...

I also faced this problem few days back..
I think problem comes when i do format data with fastboot command.
Then i do this..
1 Flash stock rom any
2 Flash superuser, ex kernel/bluspark.
3 Reboot phone
I got whole storage about 54 gb but phone is still encrypted.
4 Then reboot to recovery i wiped whole data including internal storage via twrp.
5 Than flash any custom rom.

Anyone know why system uses 19 GB of storage ?

I finally got PN on my PixelXL and just looked at storage and it says the system uses 19.9 GB and I'm wondering if I can clean the alternate slot to free up this space

My 128gb XL on latest update only use 6.79gb system

You need to flash a factory image which will wipe all data as I had the same issue I believe its the only fix as you need a full wipe to fix and if your going to full wipe your better off to just flash a full factory image and be 100% factory fresh.

Formatting didn't work for me. I needed fresh system image too

What I did was flash the new Google image then I locked the boot loader then unlocked it again. When I booted up, my storage was back to normal. After that I flashed the custom ROM. This has happened to me often.

If you are on Verizon, DO NOT LOCK BOOTLOADER! Just a friendly reminder.

That's a silly way of wiping data. Factory reset from os or fastboot erase userdata will accomplish the same thing.

If someone is going to format user data they might as well flash the newest factory image. It just makes sense its also preventative maintenance and can keep your phone running at top performance.

Flashing the image is fine. Locking and unlocking the bootloader is unnecessary and should not be done if you're just trying to format. Locking th bootloader while playing around with a messed up system is the perfect storm for a bricked device.

Oh definitely, I never would recommend to relock the bootloader that would be just asking for trouble. I replied to the guy saying to just wipe user data, which if your going to do that it just makes sense to flash the newest factory image and make good use of wiping user data and get back to factory fresh in the process that is just a no brainer.

I agree that locking and unlocking bootloader is silly, it can cause trouble, I'm aware of that, however that was the ONLY thing that worked for me in this case. I tried everything and the storage was still at 19 GB. I'm sorry if the method that worked for me is silly and unorthodox but for me that is all that worked. It's happened to me three times.

H815 Bootloop after battery died

Hey,
So im currently on holiday and dont get back home until the 13th aug.
I was on my phone last night until i ran out of battery and the phone inevitably died. I charge it this morning and the phone is stuck on the boot animation and has a slowly flashing blue led. I do get past the lg bootloader unlocked screen too and the android boot animation runs fine, just never completes. My phone is running bootloader unlocked, twrp recovery and the imperium rom. My model is h815 and s/n is 512 prefix. The battery was running pretty bad so it might be that. Either way it is stuck in bootloop and i am not sure how to approach it. I also have some internal storage that would need backing up if possible.

That's a common issue with Imperium ROM, check post #3341 in this thread for example. Just do a clean flash and your system is back again, but sadly you will lose the apps and settings.

Thats interesting, never thought of that. I should be able to backup any files etc from the internal storage using adb right?

Simply dont wipe internal storage, only wipe data, cache, dalvik and system. THe files on your Internal storages not gonna' deleted, just reinstall the apps you had.

Another problem is that i cant boot into twrp recovery using the buttons. It brings me to the stock recovery asking to factory reset. I guess i could just wait until im home and use adb to boot into the twrp recovery.

Yep. That's what it looks like for me too. When you select factory reset, the phone actually restarts into TWRP.
Make sure you actually do have TWRP installed otherwise it will wipe your phone.
You have a custom ROM installed so I assume competence, but there's always a chance

Yeah i saw that post and was reluctant to do so as im on my holiday. Dont want to lose my pics either, even when im very sure twrp is installed correctly as i use the quick boot app to go into recovery quite often.

Bootloop SGH-1747

I need to get Data from my Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-1747 and it won't boot past the Samsung Logo.
Someone told me to...
"Get TWRP image for your S3 model, flash image using Odin, boot into TWRP recovery, mount storage to PC and recover data."
I'm very new and sorry lol. Could someone help me with the steps necessary? I have no idea what TWRP is. My phone is not rooted. Is there a guide with photos or a video? What do I need to download for Odin? How do I flash?
My phone is in the most recent Android for it.

How?
My phone is not rooted and is stuck in Bootloop.

Before you do anything, try to figure out if you can boot your phone into these 2 mode:
Download mode - With the device powered off, hold Home + Volume Down + Power
Recovery mode - With the device powered off, hold Home + Volume Up + Power. (Take a picture of your recovery mode because it will tell your bootloader version)
If you can't get into those mode, your phone is likely to have a bigger problem.

The instruction is for Samsung i9305 but it will work on d2att. To flash TWRP into your phone, you need to follow this instruction. (https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/i9305/install). Also you need those files:

The only way to flash stock firmware into the phone, is with the software Odin. It's basically starting your phone with a fresh firmware through 'Download Mode' with your phone (With the device powered off, hold Home + Volume Down + Power). It will erase everything.

Download the tar version of TWRP from here: https://twrp.me/Devices/ I recommend starting with version 2.8.7.0 as a starting point.

Download and install the Windows Samsung USB drivers: https://developer.samsung.com/galaxy/others/android-usb-driver-for-windows. I assume you are using a Windows computer.
Make sure the battery is fully charged. Open Odin, do not check anything except f reset time, click on the PDA box and select the TWRP tar file, connect the phone in download mode to the computer with the original Samsung USB cable, flash the TWRP. When you see the word reset, remove the USB cable from the phone, remove the battery, replace the battery, use the button combination to get into recovery. Once in recovery, mount the data partition and copy of the data.
WARNING: flashing a phone always involves risk and you could wind up with a bricked phone and/or loss of data. Proceed cautiously and at your own peril.

Yes it will, you need to figure out what's making your system bootloop and resolve it or wipe data and cache.

Any idea how to investigate?
How do I wipe data and cache on TWRP?
Would backing up Data but not system, help restore files like the memos, text messages etc?
Because I could backup the Data and then wipe factory reset and then reinstall the data backup.

The data is what makes the system bootloop in most of the cases and since you're not rooted it is certainly the data what's causing the problem so restoring it would solve nothing.
The option is there on twrp to wipe data and cache.

For example if you installed and app try to remove it and it's data using the twrp file browser.

I think you can try to remove Google Photos apps via adb and see if it does fix your bootloop issue. Since you have a backup, you can undo your steps. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559925.

Before proceeding, I recommend copying what you can to a computer by mounting the data partition. Then, I would create a complete backup (system and data). Once completed, copy the back to at least one safe place, preferably 2.
Now, try wiping the cache only and reboot. It may be a cache problem that is preventing the phone from fully booting.
Unfortunately, I'm not able to provide instructions to back up text and notes.

I wiped cache and still nothing.
Is there any other options besides factory reset?
Can the backup bring it back to the way it was or will it make it bootloop again?

I haven't used twrp for a long time but you could try restoring the backup and wipe the cache before booting.
Note that restoring your backup will overwrite what's currently in the phone storage.

Unfortunately I can only backup the current bootloop state lol.
I think there's no other option except factory reset.

The only option maybe you have is using adb to uninstall apps one by one and hope it fixes the bootloop. You can try maybe to clear the dalvik cache + cache but I think you have done that.
I have been in this situation before. It's not fun at all. The only way to backup/recover data in a modular way, is with apps like Titanium Backup [root] and Helium. Backup your app + data when the phone is working. When you have a bootloop, do a factory reset and restore the app data incrementally. They are really great apps.
