Factory data reset, selling my phone. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

hey guys, so i'm going to sell my Galaxy Nexus, and i want to erase everything on it, should i do the option from backup and restore or from recovery ? i think the option from backup and restore is better because i want to erase apps data and music and photos, etc... i want to stay rooted and still have my custom ROM ( CM 10.1 ). another question, do i have to reflash gapps if i did a factory reset ? thx ^_^

If you run factory reset from within Android/stock recovery, /sdcard/ will be wiped;
Any CM rom is rooted;
gapps are flashed to the /system/ partition, thus they're not deleted by a factory reset. i believe you can just add a google account again in Settings, first time setup won't show up again (like it did after you flashed gapps the first time)

If you are already rooted it would be easier to just boot into Recovery Mode
Wipe all the data on the phone then reload the ROM and GApps, turn the phone off and it will be ready for the next person.
Make sure when you wipe you also format the /sdcard (this is where most of your data resides)

in my opinion, if you're going to sell your nexus, I think its better flash back to stock, not custom one :fingers-crossed:

How would i go about changing too CM 7.1.0?

Hello i am currently on CM 7.03 and am wanting to change to CM 7.1.0.
Is there any way of updating the software without flashing the new ROM?
Also to update by flashing the new ROM do i just have to wipe cache and reset factory settings then run the zip from CWM?
Thank you for your time.
u only need to wipe cache and dalvik cache (only to be sure) and flash the update..thats all
no factory reset or other wipes are needed
So am i right in thinking that too change between ROMS thats all that you have to do? (obviously having made a nand backup)

yes and u will not lost any setting
Ah that's good. I will still do a back up of all my messages and contacts regardless.
I thought i would lose everything again, considering that the first time that i flashed a ROM i came from stock and rooted with Revolutionary.

you lose everything when u do a factory reset/wipe user data from the recovery
the factory reset/wipe user data is necessary when u change the rom (like going from a sense rom to cm7)
but when u just upgrading (cm7.0.3 to cm7.1) u dont have to factory reset/wipe user data..only wipe cache and dalvik
btw always do a nandroid backup before upgrading
NAND backup, flash the rom, flash the gapps. You might want to clear cache and dalvik-cache too. It shouldn't be necessary to wipe your data.
and what if I also want to flash a new hboot and don't want to lose all my data? can I first update to 7.1 (from 7.0) then do another nandroid backup then flash a new hboot (which require wiping everything, I understand) then restore from nandroid backup? Is that possible or there is another easier way to do it? thanks

That should be possible if you are flashing the CM7 hboot and have not modified any system files as the partitions should still fit after the hboot update. However I recommend you do some more research or back up your data with titanium backup (in case it fails).

nice! thanks!
Installed CM 7.1.0 by just wiping the cache and dalvik and it all worked perfectly.

[Q] Data still available after Flashing new ROM

Hi
I just flashed my first ROM on my GS3. I went from the LH1 stock OTA from Samsung, rooted, installed CWM, and then flashed AOKP(Jellybean) Task & Ktoonsez - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684 - many thanks to them btw for some amazing work.
Anyway once I flashed the ROM and GAAPS and my device booted up, all my data was still there... my photos, my apps reloaded, even the data inside the apps was still there, which I cannot understand how. Don't get me wrong I am happy that everything was still there. Also, I did make a backup from CWM but I did not restore it because I did not need to (since all the data loaded on its own).
My question is: was this feature built into this ROM or is this something that is normally supposed to happen.
If you didn't factory reset (wipe data/cache) before flashing AOKP, then yes, all your apps will still be there. That's not recommended though because lingering system settings from the stock ROM could mess with things.
And factory reset doesn't erase your internal storage or SD card, it just wipes apps and settings, so your photos and stuff will be there regardless.

Thanks for the reply. I did definitely did factory reset in CWM as I followed all instructions to the T. I am not sure why but all of my apps remained, I saw some of them auto download rather quickly and for example I have this app called Vaulty. All of its contents were still inside.
Odd nonetheless

[Q] Installing Roms Question!

Okay, so I have a sprint galaxy s3 which I rooted the way that is shown on this page through odin and clockwork mod. I only rooted just to get tether, but now I want to try a custom rom for the first time and it says I have to wipe cache and reset wipe data (reset factory settings) inside of the bootloader before flashing the rom. My question is, will my backed up copy of recovery which I made last week be erased if it is on the internal memory card as I do not have an external sd card. I just have the 16gb galaxy s3. I ask this in case the rom does not flash properly so I can flash my recovery again and save my phone from being a brick. I have read and it seems to say all of the data in the internal memory will be wiped, so will that wipe my backed up recovery which is inside the clockworkmod folder

While I don't know the answer to that question I do highly recommend you get an external SD, even like an 8 GB which is what I'm using right now. It acts as a safety net, I keep all my valuables on there in case something does go wrong (nandroids, music, ROMs). Practice safe flashing!
I do know, however, that as long as you simply do a factory reset you do retain your pictures and music, but as for nandroids I am not sure

What happened to CWM?

Today after 5 months of keeping my stock rom I wanted to change to a CM based rom.
I backed up the phone, then I noticed that factory rest is now factory reset/ remove data, so I press it thinking it will factory reset.
Put my rom and then reboot, after that I check my photos, videos, and music is gone. I have most of that backed up on my computer.
THEN, my titanium back up is gone! All i have is a back up from March for titanium backup and that isn't up to date with my apps and games!
I checked my cwm and the back up is corrupted. WOW
My internal storage is the same before putting a new rom but when I check it I can't find my files. If it removed my files why is my storage still the same???
I know all of you are going to tell me to back up to external but I don't have one... I really don't want anyone else to criticize because I know I should have backed up better.
What I don't get is how factory reset changed to wipe data/factory reset?
Is TWRP better than CWM?
Thanks!
Has nothing to do with recovery, I believe factory reset has always wiped data. Your files are still there, they are just "hidden" and that's from flashing an aosp ROM. If u flash a tw ROM, u will see them again.

Need to factory restore in TWRP total photos, all.

I am going to sell my n7 to a friend and need to do a full factory restore keeping the rom have not going to stock.
I have paranoid Android with TWRP. I restored it and it didn't delete my photos and music. I have manually deleted these but what else does it not delete that I should take care of before I let it go??
Is there a way to start it FRESH no pics, but still be on my paranoid rom? What option should I choose in recovery?
I messed around last time and accidently wiped my os and don't want to do that again. Please help.
I'd do it manually. Use fastboot to erase everything, flash stock 4.4.4 firmware from Google, flash TWRP, boot into TWRP, use adb to push PA ROM to /sdcard, flash PA.zip in recovery, flash su.zip.
Or just leave stock 4.4.4 and let your friend decide which ROM to use.
