Okay, so I have a sprint galaxy s3 which I rooted the way that is shown on this page through odin and clockwork mod. I only rooted just to get tether, but now I want to try a custom rom for the first time and it says I have to wipe cache and reset wipe data (reset factory settings) inside of the bootloader before flashing the rom. My question is, will my backed up copy of recovery which I made last week be erased if it is on the internal memory card as I do not have an external sd card. I just have the 16gb galaxy s3. I ask this in case the rom does not flash properly so I can flash my recovery again and save my phone from being a brick. I have read and it seems to say all of the data in the internal memory will be wiped, so will that wipe my backed up recovery which is inside the clockworkmod folder

While I don't know the answer to that question I do highly recommend you get an external SD, even like an 8 GB which is what I'm using right now. It acts as a safety net, I keep all my valuables on there in case something does go wrong (nandroids, music, ROMs). Practice safe flashing!
I do know, however, that as long as you simply do a factory reset you do retain your pictures and music, but as for nandroids I am not sure

I'm new to the GNex. All of my previous phones had SD cards so whenever I flashed new ROMs on it, my music and photos would be preserved.
So if I were to run backup on CWM, does it backup the entire partition or does it just back up the system files? I usually flash/update every few weeks and I'm just prepping myself so I don't accidentally wipe my pics and music....
Thanks!
it backs up everything except the symlink /sdcard

Doing a backup with cwm will not save sd
Using cwm to wipe data/factory reset will not wipe sd
Sent from my GNex {GSM} T-Mobile
Saves everything associated with your ROM. Not your personal SDcard data.
Thanks for the replies.. Still a bit confused.
After creating my nandroid backup and then hitting wipe data/factory reset, all of my media files would be deleted. Once I install the new ROM, those MP3 and pics would no longer be there, correct?
If so, how do guys deal with this? Do you just end up resyncing everything once the new ROM is installeD? It seems like a hassle if one's media library is huge...
No. Flashing between new roms does not touch the pics and music on the SD card. So you don't lose anything when you flash roms with Cwm.

No don't believe so. Wipe with Cwm should keep the SD card in tact. I've done it for a few flashes now...
THanks! I'll give it a whirl!
I would HIGHLY recommend that you back up your SD (Internal), just like you would back up anything else you care about and don't have a secure copy of!
I'm a noob but I flashed AOKP Milestone 4 today and prob'ly did an extra wipe somewhere but my SD was blank, thankfully I had all 2,000 songs and thousands of images backed up. (in several places).
BTW, I love the ROM
Just got a T999 GS3 today. Already rooted and installed TWRP. I do not have an External SD card, so I will be putting the ROM that I want to flash (CM10 Stable) on internal SD card. But since I have to WIPE everything before I install the Custom ROM, how do I make sure that I don't wipe the custom ROM install zip as well?
Do I just do a WIPE of cache, dalvik cache, and system? And make sure that I do not wipe internal storage?
Or is there something else to this?
Thanks!!
Do a factory reset wipe system then wipe both caches install ROM wipe both caches again and fix permissions you should be good.

No, there is a seperate option for that.
1. Factory reset
2. Flash ROM and various files
3. reset dalvik cache and cache
4. Reboot
Easy as that
Which method you followed to root? I just got the phone and look ing for the easy way to root. I heard a lot about lost the IMEI so I'm kind of worry
Thanks all. I'm now running CM10 stable and all seems to be well.

I actually used this method: http://www.androidrootz.com/2012/10/how-to-root-galaxy-s3-on-mac-osx.html. It worked fine and took about 20 seconds. I then used Goo Manager to install TWRP, and then I installed CM10 and Gapps. Whole process took literally about 10 minutes. Wasn't even aware of the IMEI issue prior to rooting. I will have to remember to backup my IMEI sometime today.
This is my first phone that doesn't have an external SD card and I'm not 100% sure how to properly perform a full wipe it
I know this is a noob question, but I just don't want to brick my phone.
What I Used to Do
Back in the day with my SGS Captivate or SGS2 I just put all my files on my external SD card, then via Android (Astro File Manager) I deleted every folder from the internal SD card, booted into CWM, performed a wipe/factory default, cleared cache, formatted system partition and then installed custom ROM and everything worked fine.
What I Need
I want to be sure that I don't brick it so I'm hoping that someone can give me a step-by-step walk-through of how to install CM 10.1 (or any other ROM i guess) on my phone after completely wiping it of anything on it.
What I've Tried
I used the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit to unlock, root and install CWM but unfortunately when I then installed CM 10.1 via CWM, some leftover files remained from the stock ROM.
Basically, my phone is ridiculously slow/lagging and I'm getting sick of it.
I've tried installing a custom kernel (Franco Kernel), I've set the CPU governor on Performance (1200MHz always) uninstalling any un-needed apps... but my phone is still un-usable.
Sometimes when I install the latest nightly of CM 10.1 I do an update and other times I tried doing a full install where I wipe the Dalvik; neither way helps I still get the ridiculous lag.
The definition of a full wipe:
-wipe data / factory reset
-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik cache
-(optional) format system
Then flash the rom/gapps/kernel.
Maybe you have a "bricked" phone. It has something to do with the emmc chip. How much free storage do you have?
Check it by downloading the app in the screenshot.
If you havent a bricked emmc version, then I suggest returning to stock again, and then root again. ( most clean process , as it restores all the partitions to the stock state.)
Hopefully this helps my friend!
PS: you posted in the wrong forum, don't do it in the future

That's not related to development, read the rules next time.
Try the full wipe zip from Android Revolution HD Rom.
Use the pinned guide for fast boot. Use fast boot format/erase commands for all partitions, and for good measure flash to stock with fast boot also. This is the most surefire way and it hasn't failed me yet.

Thanks for the info, I'll be more careful in the future where I post.
I have the 16GB model and 4GB free right now.
I installed the eMMC Brickbug Check app and it says that my chip is ok (sane).
My phone is definately rooted, so I'm not sure why this app says that root is required for the memory test (clicking it just launches wiki page on rooting).

If you're on 4.2.1 you won't see any CWM backups so get ES File Explorer, give it root access and then go to /data/media/clockworkmod and see what's about. Or boot into CWM and delete some old backups
As for a full wipe, I use this before flashing a new ROM:

It totally forgot about the CWM backups
I'll delete those ASAP
There wasn't a lot in the backups folder but there is about 3.82 GB in the blobs folder in the clockworkmod folder; are those ok to delete?
Flash the newest version of CWM (6.0.2.3) as it doesn't use blobs any more. Delete all old backups and take a new one if you want. Also, check when I added to my last post

Thanks a lot, I'll give that a shot tonight.
I'll update CWM to the latest, then run your super wipe zip followed by the latest CM 10.1.
Thanks a lot for the super wipe zip too.
After wiping and flashing go ahead and run fix permission too.

Thanks guys, my phone is usable again
You guys are awesome.
What I Did
- installed the latest CWM using fastboot
- booted into recovery
- used adb to sideload your super wipe script, then the latest CM 10.1 nightly and then the latest gapps
- fixed permissions via CWM
- restarted my phone to get a very responsive phone again
With my last 2 phones I was spoiled having external SD cards so that i never had to sideload or use fastboot (I let Odin do that part).
Hello everyone,
I would post this in the development thread but I can't since I am a ne user. Anyway..
I am currently on InFamous switching between the 2.4 TW version and the Google Edition v2.0.
My problem is every time I reboot my phone, it gets stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S4 boot image. Then when I go to recovery the Internal storage shows 0 MB available, and I can't fix permissions or wipe anything without having to format data first. The only way to boot my phone again, is to format data, wipe everything, and reinstall the ROM which is very annoying and time consuming.
PLEASE HELP!!
Thanks in advance

Have you tried this:
Before doing anything, be sure to back up the internal sdcard to a folder on your computer if you have anything you
want to save on the internal sdcard. Also be sure that the Google Edition zip file rom is on your "external" sdcard.
When the phone is flashed and ready to use go into settings>accounts tab>backup and reset>"Factory data reset".
Click on the factory data reset.
After doing that reboot into cwm or twrp which ever you are using and do a full wipe as you usually do but don't
forget to include "Factory reset".
Then flash the Google Edition rom as you normally have done and it should fix the problem you are having hopefully.
Good luck!

If you already tried to Odin flash the STOCK rom and formatted your internal sdcard and you still find "0 MB"
in your internal storage then it must be a hardware issue and if I were you I would return/exchange the phone.
Good luck!
It's not a hardware issue. It's a bug in twrp. Whenever you do "format data" it corrupts the data partition. Use PhilZ Touch recovery. His recovery includes the fix. Try it.

Thanks, I'll try that. How do I get rid of the bug after writing the new recovery? Format data?
Thanks!
Hello, any progress please? I have exactly the same issue.
I found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265588&page=23 this solution:
I wanted to clean my internal SD card before flashing Omega ROM, so I used Format Data option from Wipe section in TWRP.
After that I lost almost two days trying to fix my phone. Flashed stock ROM, TWRP and Omega ROM endless times without success after that.
My phone became randomly unbootable on reboot or power on! It was stuck on i9505 logo that is shown before boot animation forever. It was same for both stock and Omega ROM, with or without external micro SD.
After endless tries, I figured out that my phone works fine if I do factory reset and wipe from original recovery. Worked fine before and after flashing TWRP.
I tired to Format Data from TWRP again and my phone again was stuck on boot.
So I did everything once more. Flashed stock, did factory reset and wipe from original recovery and then installed TWRP and in the end I flashed Omega without wiping anything.
Everything works just fine now and I will not try to use Format data option from TWRP on this device in near time! Please fix this.
First I used TWRP 2.5.0.1 and then 2.5.0.2, but it is same in both of them.

It says so in the OP... going between TW and Google Edition 2.0.. Out of curiosity though, what difference would that make? I have flashed and have backups of two versions of TW and quite a few AOSP variants... I can move between them seamlessly and haven't encountered any such problems as the OP. I use TWRP as well.
It was TWRP problem. I have flashed the stock ROM with stock recovery. I have done full wipe and my phone works well again. This is bug in TWRP. Don't push "format data" button!
I have two G3's that I have been flashing different ROMs on for the past six months or so. One is my primary phone and the other one is one that I picked up at a good price on eBay last October. The second phone is now my "play" phone. What I would like to do is clean-up the internal SD on both phones since free space is down to about 2gb on each one.
When I flash a ROM I generally do the following using CWM recovery –
1) Wipe data/factory reset.
2) Wipe cache. I know, it is redundant because the above wipes cache.
3) Wipe Dalvik
4) Format /system
Here is the info on both phones.
Phone # 1 -
This is my primary phone.
1) Phone is running on Straightalk's AT&T sim.
2) Modem is UCDMG2
3) Bootloader is UCDMG2
4) Probably will take phone to the UCUEMJB modem and the UCUEMJ2 bootloader
I know that I can ODIN back to stock or use KIES (not KIES3) to go back to stock. It is my understanding that this will totally redo everything. Is that correct? Does going into Backup & Reset and then factory data reset do the same thing. What is the best and easiest way? I want to get back to 4.1.2 or 4.2.1 and go from there avoiding the OTA of 4.3 and the infamous MJB bootloader.
Phone # 2 –
My play phone.
1) Phone currently does not have a sim card in it.
2) Modem is UCUEMJB
3) Bootloader is UCUEMJB
I know that I cannot ODIN back to stock because of the bootloader. I know that you need to use KIES3 with 4.3. However, will KIES3 work to go back to stock 4.3 if there is such a thing. Already bricked the phone once by mistake which is why it is on the MJB bootloader. So how do I clean-up this phone?
Again, bottom line is I just want to clean-up the phones freeing up space on the internal SD.
Thanks for any advice given.

I have the same problem man, my internal memory is still growing even though I've flashed other ROMS and wiped the data. I'm pretty sure there must be a way to wipe the internal memory on the recovery, but I've been too lazy to backup all my stuff to do it.
I've done it through recovery under wipe internal storage in twrp. I just went through the folders and made sure i wasnt deleting anything i was gonna miss later. Things you want to keep move em to ext sd or pc. Sure there's a similar option for wiping in cwm.

So it would be as simple as adding format data to the list of things I do when flashing a ROM. I was wondering about format /data but didn't want to really screw things up.
1) Wipe data/factory reset.
2) Wipe cache. I know, it is redundant because the above wipes cache.
3) Wipe Dalvik
4) Format /system
5) Format /data
I will try this on my play phone. Like this. No worrying about bootloaders and faster and easier than ODIN or KIES.
Thanks buttons clicked.
