The last fast ring update I know I had on my HTC M8 (registry hacked to think it's a Lumia 950) was Redstone 10.0.14915.1000, which has been working just fine for a couple weeks now. Today a new update was pushed to the phone, which must have been the latest fast ring (Redstone 10.0.14926.1000). However, after I rebooted the phone to install the update after it finished installing it rebooted itself again (as expected) but now just continuously reboots. I have to perform the factory hard reset using the volume keys to get the phone to shut down totally. But when I start it again it just goes into the continuous reboot scenario again.
Anyone know if there's a way to recover from this? I really don't want to have to use the Windows Device Recovery Tool to go back to Win8.1 and start all over again if I can help it.
Too impatient. I went ahead and used the recovery tool to go back to Win8.1 Update 2. Oh, joy!
You're not alone brother. Hit mine this morning, luckly I woke up without my alarm, but 30 minutes late. Good thing I'm fast in the morning.. Just enough time to restore and head to work. Gonna pop back to the slow ring asap..
I couldn't get it to boot into Windows 10 once it got stuck. I had to use the recovery tool to go back to Windows 8.1 but didn't realize they have since pulled the Windows Insider support for the HTC so now I can't even get the phone to upgrade to the Win10 Insider Preview build. My previous method was to side-load Interop Tools for Win10 after upgrading to Win10 via the Insider Preview app and then I hacked the registry to trick the phone into thinking it's a Lumia 950. Since I can't get back to Win10 I don't know how to edit the registry in Win8.1.
Anyone able to point me to the correct tools for editing the registry in Windows 8.1?
Same thing here .. please if anyone knows a way to backup the data when phone is in that situation share it please .. I can't delete the data on my phone it's too important!! ..
Found Win8-to-Win10 instructions for Lumia but need it for HTC
Well, I found the following post explaining how to update a Lumia back to Win10 after downgrade to Win8: http://forum.xda-developers.com/win...le/installing-windows-10-mobile-tech-t3431454
However, I don't think that will work for an HTC. Basically, I think I just need a way to get to the registry on an HTC w/ Win8 installed and then I should be able to update to Win10.
Just not having any luck finding anything on the forum for hacking the registry on an HTC w/ Win8...

Does the HTC have an SD card? If so, you can try the SD card method rather than the wpinternals one.

Yes it does. I got the following response from another user on a thread I posted under the HTC One M8 for Windows forum. I haven't tried it yet but it looks like a summary of the steps necessary to upgrade the HTC One M8 from Win8 to Win10. Here's the link for anyone else in the same boat:

So here's the situation. I've had a Touch before, and unfortunately after I broke my ribs I was spaced out on painkillers (which is why I don't take them) and forgot to pull it out of my pants before they did the good ol' wash cycle.
I finally got one back, and now I can't get anything going for me. I know for a fact I can flash the device since the new one came with the original stock WM6 ROM. Not even the 6.1 ROM, just plain old WM6. After several failed attempts to get Coke 2.31 on there I finally just said to hell with it and tried the MR1 update from VZW just to make sure it wasn't my PC.
Sure enough that one worked perfectly every step of the way.
Everytime I attempt to unlock the phone though it just fails with Error 262. I've tried every way I can think of.
I tried it with the 'Enable advanced network functionality' both on and off. I've reinstalled WMDC multiple times. I've tried it while in Windows Mobile, and while on the bootloader which just gives me the stock Vogue VZW info...nothing showing it is even getting anywhere in the unlock process.
I even tried the last resort of flashing from the MicroSD which of course just said loading for about half an hour and went nowhere.
I've read threads here and on PPC backwards and forwards on how to do this.
I've done it multiple times before on the old one before I sent it to an early grave.
I'm going nuts here trying to figure out what in the world it could be that I'm doing wrong.
Help?!?

Did you read my tutorial? It is the one stickied on this sub forum. If I were you, I would try an XP computer. This usually seem to give more issues than not. Also, the 262 error is a connection error, so a simple check would be to change the USB port that you are using to connect. Finally, you could try mtty (if you feel adventurous enough).... but I would rather go to the XP option first.
Good luck and let me know how it turns out!
This is what I had to do on my Dell Pentium 4 running Windows 7 32 bit to get mine to flash. I went into Control Panel/ Hardware and sound and Changed connection settings for WM Device Center. I unchecked everything. Then I right clicked on the ROMUpdateUtility.exe for coke 2.31 and clicked on troubleshoot compatibility and for the system to run it in XP service pack 2 mode. Then I ran the ROMUpdateUtility.exe as administrator and it worked!

Your guide is actually the main one I was trying to use to get this all to work out
My big problem is that I don't have any machines with XP on them around here anywhere
Even my 5-year old laptop is running Windows 7 at this point, and I don't have the old factory restore discs for it to toss XP back on there.
neuteboomt
I just gave that a try and for some reason when I uncheck all of those settings nothing sees the phone at that point, not even the updater.
I am trying to find a way to make Virtual XP Mode see the phone since over on Modaco a ton of people have managed to unlock their omnia's in XP Mode with 0 issues...I just have to get the files all downloaded to try it out.
Edit:
Well got all the files needed to try in XP Mode, and it still gives me a 262. I think I found an old image backup of my laptops XP disc though so I'm going to try to reformat my laptop and go back to XP on it to see if all this works.
I'm hoping it does, otherwise I'm going to be spending a crapload of time playing around with operating system installs
Well that image wasn't the right one for the laptop...so it was a no go...found the right image for my laptop though so it'll take a few hours to get everything all set back up on the laptop and ready to go.
I'm hoping to report back by 3PM or so today on whether or not it all worked out.
you should read through this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=569922 he was having the same issue and what i suggested worked for him

Im glad i could help
I tried the "IDIOT-PROOF Root Guide! NAND Unlock and ADB Update!!".... to no avail.
I had fallowed the instructions to a tee and around step 55 it all went down hill, it was supposed to automatically flash a ROM and it did nothing, and now i have probably screwed it up worse. Phone is still 100% functional but i would like to reset back to factory settings, no root, no nand, no custom rooted ROMS, nothing.
Does anyone know of a way to get my phone back to the way it was when i walked out of Best Buy earlier today?
Thanks for the help and all the great resources here at XDA.
Daugusta.
Search for and run the RUU
Step 55? Thats the idiot proof guide? I followed the original guides and there were like 10 steps max..
Haha, could i snag a link to the guide you used? also, where can i find this RUU?
Thanks.

This is not flashed, its an exe so its run while your phone is plugged in. Should go smoothly, but as always know the risks of flashing anything
I've heard toasts method is pretty solid for rooting.
Quick question wouldn't this be in Q & A? Not trying to come off as a jerk. Just my 2 cents
Sent via the Sprint HTC EVO
RUU Is not working, i get it to start, it restarts my phone and then sits their at a black screen that says "HTC" Then the program says "Waiting for boot loader" and counts to like 75 and then errors saying that it cannot connect to the phone. I then tried to start the process, pull the battery, then manually put it into the boot loader and the program never recognizes it.
Anyone else have another idea, or a way to get this working?
Thanks,
Daugusta
I believe you have to use HTC sync when you run it, though I could be mistaken. Search YouTube, there's a video of it somewhere. I wouldn't give up on rooting just yet though.
Trust me im not giving up
Try the 1-click Root Method
I looked at the fifty-five step root method and peed my pants, then I hit up jiqqaman's one-click root method. Stable root, and you can flash the stock (rooted) rom.

When I have ran an rru from previous HTC phones I have had to have sync up. But then again its never been at a black screen
Sent via the Sprint HTC EVO
Ya, i had the HTC sync running as well, synced up fine with my comp but the RUU still gave me the same error.
Im running this on Win 7 64 Bit, im guessing the 64 bit may be the problem. ill try it on a different comp and see how it goes.
Just tried it on a 32 bit Windows 7 comp, still same issues.
Sucks man, coming from the iphone world this rooting stuff seems a hell of a lot more complicated. The last jailbreak I did on my 3GS I downloaded 1 program, plugged by phone into the PC, clicked 1 button and bam!
This andriod root stuff is waaaaay more difficult, NAND this, bootloader that, recovery this, RUU that, adb this, zip and flashing all kinds of stuff. Wish there was a simpler method. Im obviously a noob so Im sure it will get easier with time.

It should work. After the program doesn't recognize it, while your phone is at the HTC logo. Close the program on your pc and start it again.

There shouldn't be any problems caused by 64-bit OS. I used Win7 Ult 64-bit and it worked fine. Do you have the HTC Sync drivers? That may fix the problems you have.

I noted this too, only I didn't have an iPhone, just an iPod Touch. Despite this, I am having a lot more fun with Android and how it works. I.E. *.9.pngs which made made jaw drop when I understood how it works. SO AMAZING.
I don't think I will ever be much of a dev, but who knows. I have been digging through a TON of documentation over the past 2-3 weeks.
Thread moved to Q&A.
well I'm pretty much over this rooting business. Ill wait for the official froyo update from Sprint/HTC and not worry about this crap, no camera, instability, bricking, etc. Guess I'm not much of an android hacker and the phone works pretty well bone stock.
Here are my questions...and please explain this to me like I am mentally retarded haha...
For returning my phone to bone stock, Like Day 1, same as it was when I walked out of Sprint store...
1) download .exe file from post #1 onto my PC
2) plug EVO into USB on PC (run in USB debug mode?)
3) Run .exe file while EVO is in Andriod
4) Select yes, yes, blah, blah and it will do its thing automatically?
Is this correct? Some have mentioned I need to download HTC sync onto PC. Yes - No? Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully someone can comment THAT HAS ACTUALLY DONE THIS and not just guessing/speculation can assist.

Great question.. Some of these long winded threads need trimming and a definite answer listed out. Clutter = confusion
Pretty sure most people know how to do this but for some who are having issues with drivers n such this might help, wouldn't hurt imo.. I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate (x86)
*** Reportedly Will not work with Official OTA 1.47/2.05 Updates, only Rooted updates, I have not personally tried. The Wizards @ the dev forums are working on a fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714157 ***
The steps below worked for me. I had the latest clockwork recovery,Damage Control DC 3.2.2.1 deodexed and The latest rooted ota updates installed (EVO_1.47.651.1_De-odex'd_Rooted.zip, 2.05.00.06.10 update.zip)
Download and install HTC Sync Update http://www.htc.com/us/support/evo-sprint/downloads/ (if you already have it installed then click the repair option,
or better yet uninstall your current one even if it is the same one, reboot your computer and then install this one again, for good measure.)
1. I unplugged/plugged my phone into the computer a couple times, switched to htc sync mode when it asks what type of usb connection I wanted, to install more driver updates if any
and did 2 reboots on my computer to get all the drivers updated/installed and working as they should.
2. Turn off the phone, hold volume down and hold down power button to get to bootloader,
pressed Power button one more time to get to the menu where you can reboot bootloader,
rebooted bootloader once and twice BEFORE the unrooting process for good measure.
3. Download either one of the RUU Stock Roms, I would try RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253.exe and then RUU_Supersonic_1.47.651.1_Radio_2.05.00.06.10_release_CL195459.exe if the first one fails.
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Supersonic/
Alternate Link http://tinyurl.com/2fq4dzk
4. Plug your phone into your computer, make sure ALL Drivers installed properly if any, you may already have drivers installed, but double check, switch to HTC Sync mode
and let it install any drivers, then turn off your phone and start it in bootloader (Hold Volume Down +Power button) Reboot your computer also
to make sure everything has been properly installed.
5. Then you can finally double click (right click run as admin imo) the RUU.exe and start the unrooting process, good luck!
I try it and it don't work. I mean yet it detect my ota version but after I click update than for a while it said that my phone is not plug from the computer. I'm running windows 7 ultimate 64bit, eva x58 core i7-920
Thanks for the write-up, does this take the phone completely back to out-of-the-box stock?

do you have to have either 1.47 or 2.05 to use this method, or will the rooted supersonic 1.32.651.1 be able to do it?
because I installed htc sync, set the phone to HTC Sync, but the phone says it cant find it on my computer.

Yes it will work for that version, you only set HTC Sync mode up to install any missing drivers, then you switch back to disk drive mode if you want your computer to gain access to your phones SD card.

Thanks for the write-up it worked just like planned. And with so many people returning for some reason or another this is just what we need
Im returning one and buying another at bestbuy HEHE
so will this return the Evo to shipped stock rom IF i did the OTA update? and will i be able to root if i have the OTA update?
thanks
I had the .6 stock(not root)and OTA updated to 1.47,how can I go back to .6 stock,I ran the .6 RUU,but it said main version older and refused to downgrade, anyone knows how do I reload the .6 back?my EVO ever rooted.
As far as I've been able to find by SEARCHING the forums:
NO
Once you do the OTA update you can NOT go back or downgrade or uninstall it or whatever.
This method posted is for installing a ROOTED ota update. ie, it was hacked, and rooted prior to being installed. If you downloaded it from sprint on your phone and installed it, your are SOL for now.

Thanks but sadly I've been through all the steps mentioned in all those links.
My USB is fine as I have been using it without issue.
I definitely cannot flash the .1 or .6 RUU.
I tried liquid jesus's method and it would not go either.
I'm stumped
Have u tried to flash the ruu as a zip?
I rooted my G3 using iRoot while having Lollipop 5.0 installed. I have just received my update from LG for Marshmallow. When I tried to do the update it told me that my phone was rooted so I can't get it. I un-rooted my phone, and tried to put everything back to the way it was, but no go. They still said my phone is rooted. The problem is that I can't do a hard factory reset. I get a message "secure booting error ...".
So after reading up on it a bit, I realized I needed to flash a stock ROM through my computer. I downloaded all that I needed, and installed LG Flashing Tool 1.8.1.1023 on my Windows 10 computer, following all the directions exactly (including replacing MegaLock.dll). The program installed, but when I wanted to run it, it told me that it couldn't find MegaLock.dll, and then asked for an ID and Password. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it many times using slightly different versions, but I had the exact same problem each time. Then I decided to try and install it on a Windows 7 machine, and it worked. So it seems that something is keeping it from working on the Windows 10 computer. Can anyone help me with this, or maybe there is another way? Maybe the dll file has to be placed somewhere else? Maybe a different MegaLock.dllis needed that is compatible with Win10? Maybe a different program? I have no idea. Any and all help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

I had problems with LG Flashing Tool the first time I tried to flash stock after upgrading my system OS to Windows 10. I finally got it to work by changing the compatibility mode for application file to Windows 8. I successfully flashed back to D85510L_00.KDZ after making the change I just mentioned.

Hi,
I have installed for a long time on 15254 in my Lumia 930. Everything works perfectly but some days now the ringing sound from the alarm isn't working and I want to try to get back to the official version of RS1. Is there a way to install RS1 directly on my mobile without having to go back to 8.1 and make this whole process almost the whole day to complete? Is that possible ?
Thank you.

If you really want to go backwards and stay on an older release... You would need to unlock the boot loader and find someone with instructions to load the custom built ROM with that particular RS1 version for your specific Lumia 930, then never update again or decide what to do from there. Otherwise you can use the Windows Device Recover tool to reload WP8 and then download the OTC updater tool from Microsoft and leave it plugged in while it updates to W10M all over again...
