wifi turns off when i lock the screen - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

as the title says, my wifi turns off when i lock the screen. when i unlock it takes about 10 seconds for it to turn on again. ive searched everywhere and everyone told me to change wifi policy to always on. i already did this and it doesnt work. it is not because of battery saver because i even have it around 90%.

Go to settings then to wifi then click on wifi settings and in there you will find a option telling to stop yhe wifi when in sleep mode so uncheck that option and then nothing would happen

(Solved)high android os %

so i just got this phone from the evo and over the first 3 days, the phone sits at 20-30% android os usage, is this normal for the s3? i am running better battery stats and i dont see anything that is keeping wakelocks. my phone does go into deep sleep mode.
only thing i found was to set wifi to not be on when screen is off so i changed that to never, any other ideas?

I've got a similar issue with my phone. I'm running FreeGS also, so I'm probably going to try flashing something else tonight. My problem is that WIFI turns on by itself every 30 minutes or so. When I'm at work, I don't have (or want) access to the corporate routers so I turn my WIFI off. But as soon as my phone goes into deep sleep it turns WIFI back on and starts scanning for access points. I have my WIFI policy set to never turn off, on my EVO that meant that if its off it stays off.

Go to settings > more settings > mobile networks > connection optimizer and turn it off.....this will prevent your wi-fi from continuing to turn on.

i was able to go into app/all. i looked for the connection optimizer and disabled it. i was having a hard time connecting to public wifis (mcdonalds, starbucks, etc) as soon as i disabled, everything worked. but that also fixed the wifi turning it self on too.

If you're rooted, look in system/bin on the root directory and see if you have a file named gsiff.daemon. If so, add .bak to the end of it. See if that solves the problem.
tkepk181- Afternoon sir. i also went and followed your instrctuions since i am also running FreeGS3. Why dont they include that .bak to begin with?
Any other little tricks you might have up your sleeve that you can share?

i did what the above poster said and also added .bak to qosmrg also. that brought my android os % from 20-30 to about 10-13

So the issue is, that this file does not always go crazy and kill the battery. It's used, somehow, in the gyroscope sensing of the phone....however, by adding .bak to the end of it, it pretty much deactivates it from running. Another thing, is that when the phone hot boots it will come back so if you see a high android process, just go and double check it and make sure it's still named .bak. Another thing that I've noticed is that I'll see qosmgr going nuts and killing the battery. When it goes crazy it locks the phone into the high processor step. You can usually tell because your phone will get really warm. If this happens to you, you can go in and add the .bak to the end of it as well. Other than that, for battery loss, I've frozen the sprint connection optimizer, DRM music storage, and Samsung Push service through Titanium backup.
Also, if you use a custom kernel this could help as well. Im' using Agat kernel right now and I average between 20-25 hours on a full charge.

you might experience some lag from time to time......for some reason, by 'disabling' this file it causes the phone to create a logcat potentially. Doesn't mean it'll happen. I haven't had it happen and I added .bak to the qosmgr without any issue. I read a few people did notice something though........but YMMV

Giving this a try Qosmgr was high on my usage list
Does anyone have any idea what those two files are used for?
I did like what was suggested and put a .bak at the end of both, but I am not noticing much of a difference. The Android OS is still high usage.
Android OS usage also drops some on it's own after a few battery cycles

screen turns on while charging

Quite annoying feature - the screen turns on and stays on while phone is charging. Sometimes it does sometimes it does not.
The way to fix it is to take the battery out and reinsert it.
Since the power supply runs red hot in this strange mode I'd find it quite annoying in $700 plus tax phone.
Yes "stay awake" is unchecked and everything is original (no ROM reflashing) and such.

Do you have any xposed tweaks installed? Some of them, like wanam have those options.

Wanam Exposed has an option under lockscreen to keep the screen from turning on when you unplug the device. Don't know if that might fix the problem you are having.
Had similar issue after failed attempt remove boot animation by deleting /system/media/bootsamsung.qmg
He running stock no root
TWEAKED 2.0 NOTE 3
No add-ons or roots.
Noted today that the screen comes on and stays on only when the battery charges up to about 50%.
Reboot does not help, only unplugging the battery, otherwise the power supply might melt down...
Turned out to be faulty power supply.
Screen lights on for me when charging phone too, I always just press the power on/off to turn it back off while charging. Is yours turning back on even after a manual screen off or maybe it's
lighting back up because of some notifications?

Oh ok that makes sense since it would be like the phone constantly being charged/running idle constantly and since the screen comes on every time you charge it...

HTC one M8 cell standby drain

On fully stock Rom with disabled bloat. On build 2.22.401.5.
My phones WiFi was actually off(no idea why it shows on)
My phones signal was full. No background apps. Still ~2% per hour seems a lot. Any ideas?
Goto WiFi settings > 3dot> Advanced > uncheck "Scanning always available"

Completely stock. Fully charged then left in "sleep mode", 5% drain in 15hrs.

Are you rooted? Try Gsam. And gsam root companion if you're rooted. The stock battery screen says nothing useful.
Having WiFi on all the time should not drain battery. I think your problem is something else. But yeah, 2% per hour is terrible.
---------- Post added at 07:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:34 PM ----------
You want to check held awake time and times waking device in gsam... If rooted.
---------- Post added at 07:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:35 PM ----------
But yes, always scan for WiFi should be off. But in my opinion, turning off WiFi when screen is on hurts more than it helps. WiFi has to constantly connect every time you touch your phone.
Should be able to get excellent standby drain with WiFi on constantly.
gonna try gsam and let you know. i was rooted but i decided to go back to full stock, get ota etc.
i tried fully wiping, flashing stock 2.22.401.4 rom + firmware and then ota to 2.22.401.5 and restore everything from backup but the drain is still quite similar. what's surprising is, the build versions i had before, they had excellent standby time, like 2% gone after 9 hours. so its really a bummer why the battery is just slowly and painfully draining away :\

We need the time held awake and times waking device screens. If you aren't rooted, and/or haven't installed gsam root companion, you won't see those as options.
But they are the only screens that matter in this case. If you can't get them, we have no clue what's waking your device.
We need those 2 shots and a good long discharge to see what's going on.

If you can.... Please go from 100 to 10 or 15 percent, then post the main gsam screen, app screen, held awake time screen, times waking device screen and for fun, the radio screen.

I can tell you already, with all those social apps... And especially if location is on... You're going to get average battery life at best.
You should Greenify any social apps you can, that you can live without notifications. It'll make a huge difference.

I tried a lot of things but came to the same conclusion you did. I guess with the amount of social media apps+auto sync going on it's bound to drain. However if I do come across a possible solution then I'll definitely post it here.

It was the syncing. Turned off sync and deleted some of the social apps to check.
Standby it barely drains now. Already unrooted and back to stock. Thanks for the help.
SOLUTION
i dont use mobile data but my network mode was set to gsm/wcdma/lte auto. ive noticed that whenever its set to anything thats auto, it causes standby drain trying to figure out the appropriate connection. anyways, long story short, changed network mode to GSM only and voila!

The same thing happened to me I had high battery usage from cell standby. What I did to stop the battery drain from cell standby was to turn on airplane mode and then I can still turn on wifi while airplane mode is on problem solved
Had the same problem. In my case, the main culprits were Skype and WiFi background scanning. The last two versions of Skype don't play nice at all with the android 4.4.3 update. Anyhow, after removing Skype and disabling WiFi scanning from the advance WiFi settings, battery life went back from dismal (13 hours with 5% left) to amazing (20 hours with 40% left) at the end of the day.
Hope that helps,
Cheers

Wifi on continuously

I'm having an issue where wifi is always on in the battery use screen.
I have disabled location, network notification in the wifi settings, and keep wifi on during sleep. But it still shows as being active on the battery screen.
I did not have this problem after a fresh reinstall, so I'm not sure what's causing it.
I've already uninstalled the major battery draining offender apps and am working to have a more efficient phone. This is sort of the last thing I'm looking to do. Is it possible for a rude app to cause this viber for example seems to list wifi in the battery screen?
What are my options?

Do you mind looking at your Quick Settings and telling me if the WiFi icon has a line slashed through it indicating it is turned off? I just noticed my wifi was running on my Battery stats over the last 4 hours, even though I turned it off when I left my house. I then noticed my wifi Quick Settings tile was only greyed out and was missing the slash through it. Had to toggle wifi a couple times to get the greyed wifi toggle with a slash. Hadn't happened before but maybe something to keep notice of as it happened to me.

Visual glitch with the battery graph left over from Lollipop. The wifi isn't actually on during that time though. It displays properly when disabling WiFi while still connected to a network.

BT preventing deep sleep (6.0.1 PE5 build)

My phone's deep-sleep behavior isn't what I'd expect. If I disable Bluetooth, the phone properly spends almost all its idle time in deep sleep (according to the CPU Spy app). But when Bluetooth is enabled, even if no Bluetooth devices are connected, the phone does not enter deep sleep at all, no matter how long it's idle (and not charging).
On the other hand, having WiFi enabled does not interfere with deep-sleep mode.

There is a search for nearby devices option in the settings menu which uses Bluetooth LE... not sure if that has something to do with it. That setting can be disabled.

Thanks, but that setting only affects the phone's behavior when BT is turned off (and deep sleep already works when BT is off, regardless of the nearby-devices setting). The setting doesn't help when BT is turned on.
Can anyone running the PE5 build confirm either that deep sleep does or does not work for them when Bluetooth is enabled?

Update: Turns out the CVS app has a perpetual Bluetooth wakelock. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/bluetooth-causing-wakelock-t3237226.
