[SOLVED] Wi-Fi won't turn off in sleep [post-JB update]: how to diagnose?

SOLVED: See this follow-up post; it's one of those 7 things!
Hi! After updating to LK3 (the stock 4.1.1 JB update), my Wi-Fi stays on even after I put the phone to sleep (contrary to the setting "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep: never (increases data usage)." See attached pics.
I have disabled thus far:
1) Google Now
2) Location Services "Use wireless networks" and "Location and Google search"
3) Location reporting: now set to "Location manually selected on the map"
4) Latitude location sharing
5) Location history
6) Automatic check-ins
7) Check-in notifications
Basically, everything I could find related to location. But, alas, that battery screenshot is after I changed all of those! Wi-Fi isn't on constantly, but it stays on way longer than just when I have the screen on.
What are my options here? How should I diagnose this sucker? I ran BetterBatteryStats, but they said it looked fine with my log (some apps, through the ambiguous "Alarms" partial wakelock, were the largest cause, but only accounted for 3.6% of the time).
I'm pretty sure this is a post-update problem, as before, whenever I unlocked my phone, I got the little notification, "Connected to #SSIDName#" and the Wi-Fi icon would obviously, then, be off for the first few seconds (and when I opened my browser too quickly, I'd get a "Page cannot be displayed" error).

Same problem here. Before the update, it was doubletwist air sync forcing wifi on at all times. That's disabled now, so I have not clue. Hopefully somebody figures it out. Mine isn't even intermittent, it's always on, and I have the same setting as you.

So, I left my phone alone for the night and these programs used Wi-Fi while the screen was off:
Do you have any of the same apps? I'm going to uninstall Google+, Facebook, and GroupMe today and run this again tomorrow. But, looking at pure download amount, it's something on the OS....
If you're interested in doing the same, the app is My Data Manager ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/...e&utm_medium=organic&utm_term=my+data+manager).
Basically, install the app, but do not open it. When you're ready for bed (or any extended period of not using it), open it, and then minimize it (runs in the background). Hit your sleep button immediately (we don't want to capture anything of the phone when the screen is on). Then, when you wake up/need to use it, wake it up, immediately disable Wi-Fi (again, no artifacts from when the phone was awake), take a look at My Data Apps (2nd page), Wi-Fi.
I'll let you know how my second attempt goes.

The only one I have is Facebook, but yeah it definitely looks like the os.

Well! Maybe I should have given it a little while longer, as it seems to be quite a bit better!
It still stays on longer than the screen, but now at least it shuts off once in a while, haha. It was either uninstalling Facebook, gMail, or GroupMe OR disabling one of those earlier settings...it's still not totally fixed, though. I found the Network Counter app which seems to be a little more specific, so we'll see how it goes tonight,

Have you disabled the location stuff? Those are what really helped me. I'm off to run the overnight test, with the new app!

i am having the same issues. my wifi since the jelly bean update has been always on.... the wifi bar in battery settings is solid and has never been off.... so frustrating.

Try "Green Power" app.
I use it to disable both wifi and data 20secs after screen off.
There is a Whitelist and a minimum threshold trigger too.
It works PERFECT in ICS.
At bedtime, I get .5% hr battery drain or better.

Awesome, thanks for the info! Exactly, I don't mind Google Now using the Wi-Fi, but then that opens the door for everything to use the Wi-Fi which will kill the battery when I get back to work.
Network Manager didn't work for some reason, so I tried Data Detective, but the stupid app consumed 90% of the Wi-Fi last night!
The only thing I've heard against battery savers is that they force apps to not use the data, and then they keep asking (creating overhead). I wouldn't have believed it out right except it came from the developer of BetterBatteryStats. But your battery loss isn't bad at all (overnight I average 0.4%/hour with the screen off).

I slightly edited my statement. I get .5% hr or better.
Curious...if you average .4%...
- what rom?
- and what is your lowest cpu freq?
- and is that with data and wifi off?

Haha, right, I thought that's what you meant!
I'm on stock AT&T. Everything is stock; CPU Spy tells me 384Mhz. WiFi on, data off.

Why don't you guys disable it in settings? Open Wi-Fi in settings. Click menu button. Click advanced. Turn off Wi-Fi during sleep. Ta-da!

Yeah, that's an alternative...but if I have a setting that's supposed to turn it off when it goes to sleep, I'd like it to do that.

I have the same issue, wi-fi is always on unless I turn it off.

I'm happy. It's one of those location settings in the first post that caused the locks! Let me know if it works for you guys,

Wifi stops working after phone is idle for some time

Whenever my phone is idle for a certain amount of time, I don't get any notifications. So I turn my phone on, turn my wifi off then on again and everything returns to normal. Any idea what could be causing this?

Latest EX kernel
I have amplify and greenify installed, and I followed limitations by this guide.

It is caused by Android bug where WiFi that goes into deep sleep doesn't enable again when you turn your screen on.
To workaround, you can leave wifi on during sleep or install app to control wifi on/off.

Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep
set to "Always"?
The bug is even if you keep your WiFi on all the time, if you allow it to go into "deep sleep", when you turn on the device in the morning (or whenever) then even though WiFi will say it is on, it won't work.
It didn't do that on the original MDA89E release but it does on the latest. I don't know when the change happened. On MDA89E, it had a different bug, even if you set Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep to "Never" it still wouldn't go to deep sleep. This probably masked the problem of resuming from deep sleep that started showing up in the latest releases, when they actually started honoring the "Never" option.
The other problem you could be having if WiFi is working and it is just notifications not showing up, Google Play services keeps a connection open to the mothership for notifications. There is a heartbeat it uses to keep the connection alive. If you router is killing the TCP connection before the heartbeat can send packets, then that connection might be broken and the quickest way to get notification is to toggle the interface. For cell data, they don't usually terminate the long connections that quickly so the heartbeat usually works fine. Alternatively if you determine this is the problem, you can usually adjust how often your router allows TCP connections with no activity to live.
I thought Google had "fixed" this problem though because they were supposed to dynamically adjust the heartbeat timer based on your connection specifics. I think default is 15 minute heartbeat on WiFi and 28 minute on Cell.

GPS/Location lost when screen is off??

I used to have no problems with this situation on any of my previous phones:
In apps that uses gps, like runkeeper, i get very fast gps lock.. but, then, once I disconnect the screen, the "location" seems to be turned off.. The gps track stops counting. When I turn the screen on again to check what is happening, the phone instantly gets gps lock and registers that new spot. Basically what happens is that I will get a track but, instead of having the full track, I only get "straight" lines between the points the gps locked when i turner the screen on to check what was going on..
I have the location in high accuracy..
Any ideas?

I have the Impression there is a different location provider for the new chipset. When i am at places without any gps signals (for example a tunnel) the reported location is moving with the same speed and direction i had before coming into the tunnel. There also a change in my Google location history. When the screen is off it looks like the location is provided by phone cell only. The reported location is more than 300m away from my real location. I have not seen this in the same locations with my older phones. (Edit: All with Oyxgen OS 3.1.2)

I have the same issue as op on 3.1.2, not rooted.

I have this stupid thing also, stupid phone,

The gps loses the fix right after you leave the app that uses it. It doesn't work in the background, I'm gonna have to return my phone sadly.

So does this happen with the newer firmware? Can you put it in the background with the screen on and it run? It seems like a software issue more so than hardware, maybe I'm wrong but who knows..

obviously a software issue, but they won't fix it since nobody talks about it. If you switch to another app that doesn't use GPS or turn off the screen the phone loses the fix right away.

Still happens with Oxygen OS 3.2.0

Can you give a try launching a nav session in google map. On my lg G2, when I get a fix in google map then turn the screen off, I will loose my fix. But if I launch a turn by turn nav session I will keep my gps fix even if I turn the screen off.

Could this be related to doze hibernating Maps or whatever app /?

Yes. This is likely related to the aggressive Doze mode that has plagued users in receiving notifications. Try disabling Doze by following the instructions in the link below and try GPS again. If it works, then Doze is the cause.

Anyone tested this with success?

Turn off power saving mode for using GPS while turn off screen
I have used Strava and it can not be received GPS signal when screen off. Then I turned off power saving mode and it was OK.

its dose feature that's interfering. I had the same issue. disabling dose does the trick.

And this is why I make my rom that disables doze all together. It kills battery more then it saves.

I don't think Doze mode is working on my phone...

Please look at the attached screenshot. The red area shows the time I was sleeping. The phone was stationery all night long. It shouldn't decrease like that, right? It should show something more horizontal if Doze is actually working, right? I believe I read something about this somewhere on these forums.
Yes, I do have "WiFi: Always On" enabled. Is that the problem?
My thinking is that I want WiFi always turned on, but I also want Doze. Meaning, if the phone is stationery, not doing anything, it should kick Doze in (which will periodically check for stuff, temporarily turning on/off the WiFi). Is this thinking wrong? If I have "WiFi: Always On" disabled, will Doze work properly and I'll still be notified of any push notifications and whatnot?
What am I missing here?

First off, there are no screenshots. Doze mode is supposed to remove wifi scans and wifi connection regardless if wifi is on. You will get a periodically sync with emails and push notifications( they will be delayed). You will also still recieve sms and mms. How steong is the network connection? Maybe with a weak connection that is what is draining battery.

Sorry, just keep forgetting attachments... Please check the first post again. No, I don't think my connection at home is a weak one. I am connected to a 5GHz network instead of 2.4GHz one. Not sure if that's relevant.

i think wifi on does prevent from doze and gives wake locks for many... tried by turning off wifi for a night to narrow down the issue?
i might be wrong here but that was afeedback from many users the battery leak/wake locks with wifi always on

Not yet, I'll have to try that... However, it doesn't make much sense to me to have it off. I mean, if it's off, even in the doze open windows, wifi will be off, and I won't get any notifications at all unless I turn the screen on. Not a very good user experience. But I'll test it nonetheless to narrow down possible issues.

Try out GSam Battery Monitor for some stats.

Based on your post these seem are most likely the same issue. I just flashed the fix from that thread and it helped TONS. It is still being tweaked before it goes to elementalx officially, but it is working great for me so far!

Yeah, it might be that issue, or not, I'm not really sure. But I used the GSam Battery Monitor app suggested above and I don't think the problem is Doze.
I used that app and start monitoring just before I went to sleep. I've also used ForceDoze just to be sure Doze kicks in (this app will force Doze immediately on screen off instead of just stationery and waiting 30mins). Look at the screenshots. Something is not right, my phone doesn't deep sleep, it's awake all the time.

What? Doze is supposed to remove wifi Scans?
If you take a look at the blue "WiFi Scan" line you see the same pause between intervals before doze kicks in as while doze is active.
Doze Mode hasn't really helped me getting less Wakelocks or less battery drain on this device. I just get the feeling there are way to many system/kernel related wakelocks due to HTC's crappy software which ignore doze mode
Oh yeah, the Wifi signal strength was really bad there.... simply because the phone decided NOT to switch to the stronger Network with the same SSID.... well thank you android....

I've used Greenify (which has a notification for Doze mode statistics) and other battery stats apps and I've realized that Doze is in fact working... So, my battery problems are something else.
I just don't get that flat battery graph when doze mode is active, but it must be due to something else...

To me it look as though a rouge app could be the culprit.
Have you tried a removing all apps, or doing a clean flash of whatever ROM your on, and if not rooted, an RUU flash and then see if the phone works as should, then this sucks, but you install apps 1 but 1 until you find out which on is the bad apple.
Your phone is def being held awake though by that Gsam battery chart.

I haven't done that and I'm not going to. I don't have time for debugging this issue like that, I need a working phone with the apps I use.
Not trying to sound rude or anything, I know you're just trying to help and I appreciate that. But I just can't do what you're suggesting.
Anyway, shouldn't some battery app help with that. I'm now using BetterBatteryStats. If there's a rogue app, that should allow me to pinpoint the sucker...

Battery drain Oreo

I'm on Atomic and from the beginning I've got a problem with battery drain. This night I charged phone to 100% and during the night I plugged out the charger. NFC / WIFI / DATA / GPS OFF. After 1,5h from 100% battery drain to 93% !

From what I see WIFI running whole the time (even it was off) + phone is not going to deep sleep whole time but stays 518,4Mhz for long time
Any ideas what to do ?

I found that one of miui apps captures tcp dump. If you look under the /MIUI/debug_log/common you will find 2 PCAP files called tcpdump.pcap0 and tcpdump.pcap1
I think that miui findphone application creates it, because i have set disabled "find my phone" and cleared data of these app and files did not appear again

Lets see after some time, but I feel like something is keeping my phone awake and it is not getting to deep sleep all the time..

There is a module for magisk that force Doze.

Try turning off nfc.

I have installed crDroid and looks like drain gone. Just NFC has to be off.
