Hey guys,
Looking for some opinions. I'm planning on jumping ship top the galaxy note 2. I live in the USA and I'm in an area with great LTE coverage. I'm either going to purchase the international or local variant.
I'm thinking of getting the international version because I assume development will be much greater and more accessories available.
If I wait and get the Att version I'll have access to the LTE network, but I fear there will be less development and accessories.
Any thoughts, what would you guys do?

Great LTE speeds or great development. AT&T version will have the same specs as the international version. The rest is up to you to make a decision
im getting unlocked version i have a GS3 on ATT and HSAP+ is pretty good on ATT.. plus no crap ware from ATT unless you root which is the only to roll :highfive: more support on unlock.. plus HSAP+ will be more battery friendly :victory:

My thoughts exacty. Received my N7100 on Monday. LTE is not available in my area anyway.

i am in the same boat, picked up the NOTE 2 7100 and honestly after using the htc one x lte for 5 months on mobile network i really havent felt deprived unless im viewing a picture heavy site. my theory is i can sell my 7100 get the att one or buy the att one stuff my 7100 in the box (after switching stickers of course) and return it.

must be loving it:victory: im close to pulling the trigger..the more i go on this site and watch youtube videos about the Note 2 the closer ill buy it..im really wanting a 32GB due to i dont know why we cant run apps from SD cards or burst shots saved ect and what else that only runs on internal memory..16GB now days gets eaten up quick specially when backed up roms .. the SD card reader on the NOTE supports them crazy fast reading from sandisk cards...
high end phones now days should be 32GB at the lowest phones are getting smarter/faster/higher camera MP ect and require more GB but i guess i can live with 16GB for apps only and like 3 roms backed up ect..i feel more safe with 32GB plus the note is design for content consumption i dont really talk on the phone:silly:
i miss my note 1 in a way but was just a test drive to see if i like it and i did. i dont really like 1st gen devices.
I'm agreeing with you guys about LTE, its fast but the hspa+ in this area is real good as well. Plus there's no telling what Att will do to the device, bootloader and all. I think I'll go the intl route for now. Any ideas on foreign suppliers right now, I've used clove on the UK for the original note and gs2 with great success.

I prefer international version too but I'm having such a bad luck with data speed. I can barely go over 1mbps, if I'm lucky 2mbps at the most. I know my location has LTE coverage but doesn't seem hspa+ friendly. It's so frustrating, for that reason I might try att LTE version since specs are most identical.
As for accessories, I don't think there will be too much difference. Int & US S3 has just about same amount of accessories availability. I assume it will be same for Note 2.

One thing I don't see a lot of people mentioning is the tethering capabilities of the international version.
That is the main reason why I went with the international version of the US version HTC One X, Galaxy S3 and now the Note 2 was for the built in tethering.
With the US version, as soon as I tried tethering a device to it, it requires me to add an appropriate more expensive data plan before I can connect.
With the international versions, I tether all day to them with my laptop, my other wifi devices ect. without incurring any extra charges or making any changes to my current data plan.
That my friend, is way worth it for me to go with the international version.
Once you got LTE, you never go back...thats me though. Same exact specs plus LTE? Also it should be out in a week or two? Id wait.
So people who have Note 2 in the US how are your data speeds are seeing a big difference in not having the LTE version? I live in a non LTE area does affect me?

Comparing my international note2 to my wife's galaxy S3 with AT&T's LTE service, she gets faster data speeds - at least 2x what I can get (and sometimes even 4-5x times what I can get.) (I get about 4 to 7 down while I've seen hers go as high as 25 down.) However, it's really not noticable for web browsing, email, etc. The only time I noticed any difference (outside of the speedtest benchmark app) was when downloading something from the google play store. Even that isn't an issue for me, as I usually don't download from the play store when I'm not home (and on wifi.)
Having the LTE device will result in heavier battery usage (even in a non-LTE area.) Until the devices start showing up, however, it's impossible to say what the difference will be. It might be an extremely power efficient LTE chip, or it might not be. The extra drain will be most noticable when the device is connected to the LTE network and data is transfering. Even when NOT using data or not connected to LTE, it will still drain extra power (as the extra LTE chip will be powered and will occassionally search for an LTE connection.)

I have never owned an LTE phone and seem to do just fine on HSPA+. My Note 2 will here Monday (from Newegg) and I'll just use it as I do every other HSPA+ phone. If it meets my needs (streaming netflix/radio/tethering) I'll just keep it. If the AT&T version is super power efficient and screams on LTE without sucking (bloatware, locked down, etc) I'll just sell my mint international Note 2 and move on with my life and get the AT&T version.
Win-win.

Most likely, I'll keep the international version. I expect AT&T to sell their LTE version for 750 off contract (75 more than I paid for the international), it'll be bloated (as every AT&T device is), locked to AT&T frequencies and SIMs, and I don't think it'll be as well supported by the open community as the n7100.
Finally, I think it'll be at least one more generation of chips before LTE is power efficient enough for me. I simply don't do anything with my phone that really takes advantage of the LTE speeds - so the extra battery drain from the LTE support isn't worth it for me.
If I used my phone for tethering, on the other hand, I probably wouldn't even consider the non-LTE handsets anymore (and would keep a spare battery or two.)

Any idea what size sim card will be used for the AT&T version? Should be regular size right? That is my only concern because I don't want to have to cut my regular sized sim card if I were to get the international version. Unless AT&T will use micro sim too... if that's the case then I could just buy the international version now since I'll be cutting my sim card either way.. and I don't really need LTE and AT&T's bloatware.

microSIM. Pretty much all new phones these days are micro. It's the new standard.
What carriers are you guys using to tether?

There isn't a forum for the lte version so I'm asking the question here. Does anyone know if the AT&T version will use the same sim as the note2? I want to switch the sim between devices when I drive. A portable inet enabled nav system for my car.
Yes, it takes a micro sim. Same as the note II. Will come with a "warm sim" installed to support session based (prepaid) pricing as well.
update: I just swapped mine out and it won't latch in place... not sim related, as none of my sims snap in. Silly spring loaded sim slots......

Weird. Do you think no microsim will fit? If it did, do you think you could use it as a giant phone on your car dash? It would be perfect as an internet connected car navigation replacement.
They fit perfectly. I just have one unit where the latch mechanism is messed up.
As far as the usage described... the AT&T variant does not function as a phone as configured. It is considered a connected tablet and no voice services are included in the stock software. That said, it makes a hell of a navi. You just wont be making standard cellular calls from it as well.

That's too bad. I was hoping I wouldn't have to tether my gs4 to the tablet and use Skype and google voice with it maybe ill just wait for that Sony Xperia z ultra as my next phone. The note2 wasn't big enough to use effectively from my dash.

You would be able to use skype if you have a data plan active on the Note 8.0. It is LTE and working great for me for 3 days now. Of course it would need its own data plan, or if you are on a Mobile Share plan it is only 10 bux to add to your existing data bucket. Not bad imho.

What service provider are you using for your LTE?
Interesting. I had the HK LTE version, and its SIM slot failed - not a latching problem - just started telling me the SIM card wasn't there after a couple of days.

As for same size (micro) yes. As for functioning...NO!! The Note 8 LTE will only function on data based sim cards. Such as a mobile Wi-Fi hot spot sim card.

Are you sure a regular voice/data SIM won't just work for data only in the device? I really makes me angry that AT&T has all the phone stuff taken out. I want a tablet that I can use as a phone also. I may just buy the international version and not worry about LTE.

Nope. You can't even root it yet. No one has bothered to find an exploit since so few people actually own an AT&T version right now. haha Even if it achieves wider adoption, let's be honest...tablets with cell connections are usually frowned upon by the XDA and other dev-friendly communities. They'll always be treated as second-class citizens around here because they have no hipster cred 'round these parts. If we were with the in crowd, we'd buy a WiFI-only model and just tether it to our phones. :silly: A lot of people in these communities just see absolutely no point to, and thus thumb their nose at, a tablet with an LTE connection. You can give them reason after reason why they're useful, but it falls on deaf ears more times than not.
Don't expect ROMs or root for the AT&T model until there are more people that actually own one.

Truth. We all have our reasons which I'm sure is similar to each others. I don't want to drain my phone battery and subsidiary prices are nice too

The rep at my store said that I could change the sim over to a voice plan any time I want but it will cost more per month. $10 for the data only plan compared to $25 for the voice/data plan (like any other device). I don't see a point in spending the money until somebody figures out how to get calls working. He also said that the sim would still work in the tab after changing to a voice plan. The question is: is the hardware capable of supporting voice calls? If so, then I'm confident that somebody will figure out how fairly quickly.

No. The AT&T SGH-I467 model does not have the phone hardware and therefore is incapable of making calls. Look at a picture of the international 3G model and compare it to a picture of the AT&T model. You'll notice the AT&T model doesn't have an earpiece at the top like the international model does. You can use the AT&T model to make calls via VoIP services like Skype, but if you want to make calls over a cell network, you're out of luck. If that's a feature that you really, really need, then you'll have to buy an international unlocked 3G model.
As a side note, the official Samsung flip cover for the Note 8.0 is designed to fit all models worldwide. This means it has a cutout in the top for the earpiece that you find on the international 3G model. It looks a little hokey when you put it on the AT&T or WiFi-only models since there's nothing there to plug that hole.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. By hardware I meant the radio side of things. I agree that the microphone and speaker are definately not configured for calls. Are you saying that you have reason to beleive that it is impossible to develop a way to place calls via bluetooth headset?

Yes, people have tried to place calls and send native text messages. It appears that there is no usable radio hardware inside the device other than that which is required for data.
Now, it's possible that the hardware IS there but the baseband firmware simply disables it, but there's no proof of that. Unless we could hack the radio firmware somehow (not likely) or do a teardown of the tablet, we'll never know for 100% sure. But, as things sit right now, you will neither be able to make phone calls of any kind, nor be able to send native text messages to or from the tablet, at all with an SGH-I467 AT&T model because either there's no radio hardware or the I467UAMDF radio software has disabled the phone hardware entirely.
Hi guys. I've been a member of XDA for some time through many phones rooting, ROMing, etc., and customizing many phones. But I haven't done anything for awhile, still rocking the Note 4, and am by far no expert. I am really looking to get my hands on the Xiaomi Mi Max 4GB 128GB dark grey version. I've never bought a phone that wasn't compatible or made for my carrier, so I need some help.
1. Does anyone know if they will get these back in stock, or am I stuck purchasing a gold one?
2. I am on Verizon. From my understanding, it will work except LTE. Do you still get 4G but not LTE? Is it a huge deal really? Can you still stream on Netflix etc, without a huge lag? I've read from some users online it wasn't a huge difference.
3. Which version do I look for, International?
4. Would it work better on AT&T? Because I am willing to switch for the phone I want. If it's the same as Verizon, no LTE, then I'll just stay with Verizon.
Thanks for any help guys. I really want this phone. I was disappointed the Note 7 is still so small. The Note 4 easily fits in my pockets, so I can't see why they won't go bigger with all the use of media and internet these days. I know some people wear skinny jeans and already have an issue with the size, but that's why they have other options like the S7.
Also looking into the Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra. Will that work any better on a US network?
I'll pay you $1,000,000 if you can get Verizon to activate this phone on their network. They would never let you use any of these phones on their network.

They block it from accessing their network. They limit what's allowed to run on their network. I even tried my friends Verizon sim in my Mediapad X2 and Mate 8 and nope, if it's not in their whitelist it won't work. That's one of the main reasons I left Verizon a while back.
Ok, few important things to share with you.
Consider the 32gb, 3 gig ram version because it has the most development, global ROM, and possibly lower cost. I'm seduced by bigger specs models but frustrated to no end by lack of global ROM, I've got the 64 gig.
Secondly I ditched Verizon for this very reason. Lack of open network and hassles getting devices to work.
Thirdly, look at network coverage in your area, pick the better of AT&T or T-Mobile. I've gone with T-Mobile and not looked back. Speeds are good enough at H+.
Finally, Lenovo Phab Tango device with US LTE bands is about to hit the market, so research that also. ?

THANK YOU so much!!! That was awesome information. Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, seems to be the only fairly current phone over 6.3" fully compatible in the US right? I've had so many cell phones over the last 15+ years, more than 15. I've never cracked a screen. But with having such a larger screen, it concerns me a little I have not seen anything about it being Gorilla glass. Other than that I'm sold. Not that there are many choices in that size compatible in the US, but it has pretty good specs overall. I only wish for a little bigger battery and Gorilla glass. But you sold me sir. I'll be waiting for this. Guess I'll be switching to AT&T soon. Thanks!
I have the data and sms/mms working on Verizon currently. Did all the troubleshooting with them and on my own. Not your typical customer, 32 years in technology network engineering. Been fighting with them to have it added to their system. Finally someone submitted the form for me waiting to see. As for now I have my Verizon number forwarded to my Google Voice.
Is Mi Mix 2 works on US T-Mobile for VOLTE and WiFi Calling?

Yes, existing services will work, however the SIM card for the account with the services has to be activated on a network approved/issued phone. If not, you will need to call support. If you've used volte before bringing the phone onto the network, it will work from their end though you may have to change the settings on the device. If you are trying to activate a new service with the phone, you will need to call T-Mobile.

Thanks. How about wifi calling?
Same as volte or other features. If a network service/feature has been active/used on the network before the new phone was brought to the network, it's all good from the carrier end.

I don't think thats a correct statement. I have VOLTE and wifi calling on my current phone. But when I got Xperia XZ premium mone of those features worked.

You misunderstood. If you put a SIM into a network issued or supported phone, typically the services that are already active will work right away. However if you bring a phone to the network that is not sold by the carrier, chances are you will have to call them to get the services working.
Some carriers are setup in a way that inserting a new sim into a phone unknown to the network won't work, some or all services may be disabled but if you put the new sim into a recognized device first, the sim and it's services will be active and you can just transfer it to the unrecognized phone. Of course, that may not be enough, modifying APN settings on the phone for example may be needed to get it running
I'm going to cut my monthly bill in half by switching to project fi and I'm sharing my plan here though it will work and/or make sense for very few users out there.
It only makes sense to do this if you are already on T-Mobile's network and you pull less than 2GB from the LTE network. This is due to the low base cost but high bandwidth prices through project fi. If you are a heavy data user and you don't pull the bandwidth from wifi, project fi plan would cost more than the T-Mobile you're on.
Next up, you need one of these 6 devices:
Pixel XL Model G-2PW2100 (North American version)
Pixel Model G-2PW4100 (North American version)
Android One Moto X4 (All versions)
Nexus 5X Model LGH790 (North American version)
Nexus 6P Model H1511 (North American version)
Nexus 6 Model XT1103 (North American version)
While you can use most phones on project fi, (all phones that already work on T-Mobile will do) only these 6 phones can activate a project fi sim. If you don't already have one, you don't need to buy them, you can just borrow one from a friend however they can be used to activate a fi sim only once, after the activation that phone won't be able to activate another. Or if you find a damaged phone cheap, it only needs to be able to connect to the internet, read a sim and it's touch screen is still working, you can do that. Nexus and pixel phones with shattered screens sell as low as $50, you just need it activate it the sim. If you don't pull lots of data, you recover the cost in 2 billing cycles.
Project fi works by having a physical T-Mobile SIM, virtual Sprint SIM (it supports up to 10 virtual SIM cards) and it connects to an array of wifi networks in urban areas throughout the US. A fully compatible project fi phone connects to all of them, other phones aren't compatible with the virtual SIMs so they are limited to T-Mobile's network, so if you are a T-Mobile user, nothing changes except the reduction in monthly bill (provided you don't pull lots of data through T-Mobile.
Now this is where the mix 2 comes in. It's compatible with all but the T-Mobile band 71 but I wouldn't get excited about that anytime soon, by the time T-Mobile fully deploys it's 600 MHz band, today's flagships will have reached end of life anyway, it's something to consider once mix 3 or mix 4 are out. I suspect that the Mix 2 is capable of utilizing both T-Mobile's and Sprint network due it's array of compatible bands but I won't know for sure until next week. Even if it's not, using the mix 2 through T-Mobile's network only at a reduced cost is still a good deal.

You would be better off switching to http://www.mintsim.com
The 2Gb, and unless you are extremely miserly on Data, the 5Gb plan will be cheaper than Project Fi. Mint is on T-mobile, and owned and operated by UltraMobile. You do have to buy several months at once, so that is a downside, but if you can afford the outlay of cash, it is a very inexpensive service. I personally just switched from Project Fi, and have been happy with the service.
That is a good alternative too. Ting is also an option for those wanting to reduce their bills. I live in an urban area and project fi is the only viable alternative for me, all the local MVNO's get blatantly deprioritized.

T-Mobile's WiFi Calling will not be baked into the Mi Mix 2, there for you won't have the ability to use it. T-Mobile requires a WiFi certification through them that the phone manufacture must pay for and provide units for testings in order to receive their certification. Although the Mi Mix 2 has every band supported that T-Mobile uses outside of the new 600MHx band 71 and extended band 4 on band 66, it will work fine for calling and texting but no WiFi Calling.

VoLTE works on MintSIM, which is an MVNO on T-Mobile.
Has anyone used it with actual T-Mobile and can confirm it's working? Or is it guaranteed to work with actual T-Mobile if it works on a T-Mobile MVNO? Thanks guys!
I am in Australia on Telstra, on my Redmi 3 it used to drop from LTE to 3G when making a call.
Now is says 4G+ even during a call, on my MI Mix 2
When I turn on Volte is says HD next to 4G+, when I turn off Volte the HD disapears, I guess HD stands for High Definition?

Yes,I got the MIX2 two days ago,have used it w/LTE Bands 4 & 12.
VoLTE is built-in/switchable on/off,AFAICT,no WI-FI Calling.
From my limited use,it all works well (calls/text),connects to WI-FI very quickly,stays connected.
Data signal seems to work well also,turned off WI-FI to test weak T-Mobile signal when @ home,found/stayed connected to Band 12 w/no problem.
There is no WiFi Calling option in this phone (I just got one) ?

WiFi Calling for T-Mo ile is enabled on a certified device by T-Mobile when a T-Mobile SIM is detected. The Mi MIX 2 has not submitted a request for testing and has not paid for the certification process to have T-Mobile WiFi Calling enabled. Xiaomi is not marketing the device towards the U.S. market so there will not be any T-Mobile WiFi Calling on the Mi MIX 2.

Wifi calling works if you use Google Voice.
I've been wanting into the oneplus ecosystem of insanely good development for awhile, but unfortunately am stuck with Verizon in my area. Any chance this will be the phone that supports Verizon bands?

You can really give up on version support. CDMA is a hard area to get into as most of the phone functions are not open source and licensing is always an issue. Will just have to wait for Version to get off of the old standard and use something that isnt 50 years old.
I was looking at this but in same boat with Verizon.. pulled trigger on the PH-1.. cant beat it for the price

Licensing of CDMA is a trivial issue, many unlocked phones are now offering it including VERY inexpensive phones from Motorola.
For many of us Verizon is a requirement, not an option. It's the only carrier I can use that doesn't constantly lose LTE service. So in a way, their LTE network is more advanced, more built out. All of my voice and data traffic travels over LTE on Verizon 99%+ of the time.
Glad to have CDMA as a backup plan, even though my phone hasn't fallen back to CDMA in a long time. It does sometimes in the mountains where only 1.228 MHz CDMA slices work well. Verizon will get rid of it when the world is ready, there's nothing technically stopping them today, they would just lose some of their coverage advantage.
Was interested in the OnePlus 5T, but will happily keep using my Pixel 2 so that my phone actually has service where I live and travel. Where Verizon uses "50 year old technology," other carriers often has no service at all.

A trivial thing yet soo many dont or cant do it. You also have to remember that CDMA is only used by Verizon and sprint along with a few smaller carriers. The rest of the world uses GSM.
That is already starting with them working with ATT to build new towers.
I could say the same for where I live. Here ATT is your only option. Nothing else works here.

Fair enough, every location is different. I just think phone manufacturers choosing to omit CDMA is more a numbers game than complexity. The Snapdragon chips/modems support it, antenna tuning is not an issue since the phones already run on those bands, etc. If Motorola can ship a $99 unlocked unsubsidized non-prepaid phone with CDMA, surely OnePlus could have put it in the 5T. Perhaps it would have been $519, though, and they wanted to hit that $499 price point. Who knows.
Isn't the Tillman deal just adding another lease operator similar to American Towers and Crown Castle? Most towers in our area are owned by those two with multiple operators on them, though we have a ton of Verizon micro cells in town that are seemingly build directly by Verizon. Outside of town there seem to be a lot of towers with JUST Verizon or AT&T on them, and that's where the coverage differences really start. Will the Tillman towers be LTE-only?

Eventually yes. LTE is the next step. This is why Verizon has been using LTE Sim cards for the past few years. They are slowly having to convert as CDMA tech is just too old and limited for the direction of mobile connections.
Motorola has a stake in doing it. China also uses a few old CDMA setups. They also have the money to pay the licensing and what ever price Verizon charges to test the device and work with them for putting the needed software on it. Remember the base phone functions for CDMA tech us not open source. Not even in Android.

Ahh yeah, I forget about the Verizon testing/certification fees. Was interesting that Essential released the phone before Verizon approved it (of course they paid the Qualcomm royalties, though), and then said later that it was certified to run on Verizon. People already were using them, but not using Verizon's official provisioning page that fixes Visual Voicemail and such upon activation, so there were quirks. Considering this, I suppose it would be quite a pain for OnePlus to go through the Verizon testing/certification for a relatively small amount of customers on the world stage.

Poor effort...if essential can manage to do it while being a way smaller company OP can do it especially when their owner is Oppo.
The fact is they don't want to..for whatever reason..it's not about money, they have it..it's not about time, they have had it. So let's stop with those excuses.

I'm not sure where you live exactly but I was on Verizon for over 10 years and finally dumped them so I could get the oneplus 5. I switched to cricket which uses AT&T's network and I get at least 99% of the coverage I did before.
Unless you are truly in the sticks I bet a GSM network would work fine for you. I live in North Dakota so believe me when I say we are not the first to get new cell technologies by any means.
I sold y oneplus 5 while watching the launch event and am now patiently waiting for tomorrow so I can order the 5T.
With Verizon's LTE network being to a mature state I find myself on CDMA MAYBE once every six months. Could this be used on Verizon as an LTE only device if you already have an active sim? Also, I see band 13 is not supported, is this not supported in the hardware or is the band support there and it is just disabled currently? If the latter is the case is there any chance it could be enabled by devs in the future? Really liking and wanting this phone but work pays for my service and only offer Verizon and I'm cheap and don't want to buy a plan just to get the phone. Thanks for anyone shedding some light on this.
I ordered this not knowing it was not fully compatible with VZW's network. It's a shame as this thing looks like a beast. I just cancelled my order.
Oh well, I have too many phones anyway.
Yesterday I said "screw it" and reordered the 5T. I got a plan with T-Mobile. If I can get good signal, I'll switch as all our other phones over since T-Mobile is much cheaper than VZW.
Just to clarify - does voice and sms work on Verizon? I'm on T-Mobile and one of the places I visit has Verizon coverage not T-Mobile. I carry a payg phone for those visits. Don't need data just the ability for people to reach me. Be nice if I could use my 5T for that.

Voice does work. It does through 1x and you will get 3g most of the time. Not sure about MMS or SMS though.
This is likely a stupid question but I'm wondering since its a dual SIM if you can have a T-Mobile and a VZW SIM installed? Would that allow voice for VZW?

Not stupid, and yes it does. I had a Tmobs and VZW SIM in a Oneplus 5 and it worked well together. But the VZW service is very poor.
