I was WP/iOS user and recently switched to Android. Just got my OP3, which is my first Android device. I am wondering, which custom ROM should I get. I kinda need more battery life and SOT so I want to ditch the OOS.
Do note that I have literally 0 use for fingerprint scanner, android pay and camera (well, not fully but any mediocre quality camera/pictures will work).
Also, I would appreciate if there is any guide or video tutorial, showing the whole process of custom ROM installation.
I would recommend Cyanogenmod 13.0 with Elemental X kernel.
Here is a tutorial to unlock bootloader and install TWRP Recovery

And here is a tutorial on how to install Cyanogenmod 13.0

OOS is a great near-stock rom tbh, but if you still want to try another I'd recommend Sultan's CM
Would recommend you to stay with stock as you may feel all this tweaking thing a bit laggy (coming from iOS , which doesn't let you even customize properly) but for sake of having the taste of tweaking :
Its a 2 part step
1) Unlocking bootloader , installing TWRP , backing up your data (as this will completely wipe out your phone) including whats app (using google drive built-in feature) and messages (using "SMS back up and restore" available in Play Store) . Avoid using links provided in video discriptions

TWRP Recovery : https://dl.twrp.me/oneplus3/twrp-3.0.2-1-oneplus3.img.html
2 ) Installing Custom Rom close to stock with patched Kernal would be better for you to address battery and SOT issue and lot of audio mods , I would suggest freedom OS 1.6 CE ,
Custom ROM :

I'd say OOS on stock has the best battery. If you want some rock hard stability along with battery, go for ElementalX kernel on OOS. If you dont want OOS so badly, then go for sultanxda s rom.

I've never been interested in securing my phone and thought I would not use the FP scanner but found it is the quickest and easiest way to unlock the phone so I use and love it now. Just a quick press and the phone is ready to go instead of a double-tap + swipe etc. I suggest you get familiar with OOS for a while before you jump.
Resurrection Remix Blackjubel is great
There es elementalx Kernel preinstalled
It's smooth and stable and battery life is also good.
And you have many in build Features so you don't have to install xposed.
@arandomdude, this poll might shed some light on your question: http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/help/september-rom-kernel-mega-poll-t3456213.

Just at OOS, just root it, install Xposed and use Amplify and Greenify. It'll boost your SOT a lot. Also don't use Chrome browser. It drains battery a lot.
No one can tell you what the best custom ROM for you is as everyone's preferences vary, my advice stick to stock for now . SOT will improve over the first week of usage and you need to get to know the device / OS before choosing a rom to mitigate any perceived weaknesses. Take your time assessing new roms, as I said SOT will take about a week to stabilise. Above all enjoy yourself it only takes a few minutes to flash a new rom do why not try them all.
New to android?
Then start reading, you have a hell lot of things to learn, don't blindly jump into what random users says is good, laziness will damage your phone and diminish your trust in Android

Sorry if this is a n00b question
If I unlock my bootloader and install a custom rom I can still use banking apps so long as its not rooted?? Or will the fact that the bootloader is unlocked stop the banking apps working?
I'm currently stuck on P2a42_S251_171107_ROW and would like to upgrade
Thanks
I'm using LineageOS 15.1 and rooted with Magisk.
All banking apps and Android pay etc work fine.

Are you using the TWRP version from the Lineage wiki? It has treble support etc.

Can anyone help me to clarify my questions ( All based on custom ROM )
1. Fast charging will work on custom ROM or not ?
2. Volte & Vilte will work or not ?
3. Custom ROM will damage battery life or not ?
I can only answer your first question, because my operator doesn't offer VoLTE, but according to comments on the custom rom that I'm using (Xtended version 10) it seems to be working. Screen-on time is now over 3hrs and I have 3,5 days to go, last charge was about 3,5 days ago. So the battery lasts over a week in my situation, which is/was a little better than on the stock rom from that day, about 2 years ago.
Fast charging is working on this custom rom, yes
Ow, and OP, I have a custom rom as you can read above , my P2 is rooted, also with Magisk, and no problem at all with my banking app; it doesn't even notice me that I'm on a custom rom.

With Lineage 15.1 and sensible apps/settings/general user behaviour, the standby time is fine. Adding in rooting/tweaking it feels like it is better than before (Android 6).
However, I am still troubleshooting what appears to be 30+% reduced screen-on time and high system process power usage with/without rooting.

Everything has its benefits and downsides.
But overall I have better sot and also much less lagg.
I'm having 15hours of sot.
Or 9-10hours with light usage.
OnePlus's aggressive battery optimization is the worst optimization I've ever seen on a smartphone! i won't go into much detail coz every body knows it, I give up on OOS, so i want to settle for custom roms so please recommend me the best custom for this device and also if it's possible, how i can migrate my apps/app data to custom roms.
thank you.

thanks for the update. i always liked an app i left hours ago being freezed at exactly where i was with out the app refreshing each time i get back. what i mean is my previous iphone/galaxy used to do that i.e i will quit facebook like hours ago and when i get back it will be at exact point (post/comment) i was borrowing.
Is it like that on OOS 10 now?

So I tried to left Twitter in recents for an hour and when I re opened it, the app doesn't have to restart but it's not exactly at the same state. It may be caused by some other apps (xda, reddit, galerie, camera, Snapchat and skype) that were also in recents and needed to free some memory
However oos 10 is worth a try, those new animation feel much better than on oos 9

thank you for your time i appreciate it. anyway clearing the recent apps all the time stresses the memory and in somehow wastes your time. later versions of android efficiently manage background apps [recents] so it won't eat up your battery and you won't wait longer when getting back to your apps.
you can try PE Plus
It is a preference to be fair but out of the main ROMs the stable choices with frequent support and updates appear to be
Oxygen os based:
Theone5tOS
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/development/rom-theone5tos-v1-0-t3729798
Pixel based:
Pixel experience (or optional plus version with extras)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/development/rom-pixel-experience-t3976333
Stock android based:
DerpFest (very customisable)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/development/rom-unofficial-aosip-aka-derpfest-t3978357
Crdroid
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/development/rom-crdroid-android-6-t3972533
They are the most stable and frequently updated which some people would class as best.
While others would say best is for battery life and if so then usually pie builds without gapps if possible say like
Lineage OS 16
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/development/rom-lineageos-16-0-pie-oneplus-5t-t3843026
Would be your best bet as you would save a lot just removing all the bloatware and background features that comes with gapps.
Again it's preferance and based on individual use cases same reason why people publishing SOT means absolutely nothing. As unless they show a before and after with a guide to drastically change the battery life ; all they're doing is saying if you use it like me you may get this time (some people only text and phone and some game while others are social media butterflies).
---------- Post added at 02:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:08 PM ----------
PS. as long as you sync all you apps and photos and data with Google everything will transfer to the new ROM. when you sign in with your Google account pick restore from cloud.
If you have anything that is installed from another source or a patched app ; then you can use Titanium backup to backup all apps and restore them when you have installed the new ROM.
Usual procedure to change ROM is :
1.Unlock bootloader
2.Install twrp or another custom recovery. ( I recommend orangefox as you can manage magisk modules easy through it.)
3.wipe system and data but do not format data where SD is if you want to keep what's on your phone's drive. (never wipe vendor as it has the treble files in it.)
4. Flash ROM zip you have chosen.
5. Flash magisk if you want root with mods if not just the keep recovery zip if installing oos. (oos replaces twrp or other recovery's with oos ones when installing not a big problem as can be flashed through fastboot again.)
6.optional you can install custom kernal or no Verity at this point.
7.reboot into new ROM (sometimes takes 10 minutes or so to boot up.) and restore desired files and apps by clicking restore from the cloud.
I've only wrote this second part of the reply as you also asked for advice on transitioning to a new ROM and keeping apps ect. Even though for more advice on the unlocking and rooting I would read the available guide.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/how-to/oneplus-5t-unlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-t3704592
you can try pixel rom, but overall I think stock rom is best. And this is oneplus, so, stock roms are so close to any other custom rom.
Yes, i agree with you before i update to Android 10. I experienced a poor battery life compared to Android 9; i make improvements installing a custom kernel but i'm far away from battery life of Android 9.
So, I was tired with RealmeUI and decided to do some experiments with my phone. For the last few days I have been flashing numerous custom ROMs. I'm gonna share my experience with these ROMs. Hope it helps someone decide which one to flash. Earlier this post had some other ROMs mentioned too but I removed them as they were updated recently and I haven't tested them. So, can't provide my review without flashing them.
1. PIXEL EXPERIENCE PLUS & PIXEL EXPERIENCE
This is by far the best custom rom available for this phone. It's been one week and I'm still using it. The UI is buttery smooth. Gaming performance is awesome and battery life is good. The only downside of this ROM is that it doesn't have extra features like the other ROMs. This is purely STOCK. And damn I miss the OOS recorder from Derpfest. I know there's a Magisk module to get the oneplus apps and I did flash it. But the screen recorder was just not there. I tried installing ported apk. But the apk wasn't installed. So I used a app from the playstore- "SCREEN RECORDER". From my point of view this is the best rom for non gamers! I would recommend Evolution X for the gamers out there. I did install only two modules on this ROM - AML and Dolby Atmos!
2. EvolutionX
This is my daily driver now . The smoothness and performance is as good as PE+. But this rom has some extra features which is very essential (to me). If you game a lot and do screen recording, this is the one for you. There's a dedicated gaming mode which turns on automatically when you open games and oos screen recorder. It's a very feature rich rom. The latest version of EvolutionX needs RealmeUI firmware. So flash it first if you're on COS.
3. Havoc OS
Used this ROM for almost two days now and I can tell this is a good ROM. I didn't do gaming though. By the looks of it, I think it will handle gaming just fine. The XDA thread of Havoc is outdated. Join the Telegram Group to get the latest version(which is 3.8). And it needs RealmeUi firmware so flash it if you're on COS.
any bugs in Pixel Exp Plus or should I stick to Realme Ui
I can confirm. Been testing all the three and while I loved them Pe and pe+ are far the best in basic functions like speed, ui, battery, performance. Yet it is true it's very stock android like and missing some extra features but I don't mind for I'm a purist and you can always add extra content, apps, features by downloading and on a rooted device there is no such thing as completely impossible ?

You have to sacrifice some things. The private safe of realmeui isn't there. You have to use Gcam. Stock camera features(48MP) won't work. Slo mo does work but is kinda useless. The secondary lenses work but the macro is pretty useless I guess.

Well, there will always be stuff that won't install on different ROMs. I tried so hard to get 48 mp on custom ROMs but found out that it's kind of faux yet a good 12 mp gcam shot can be just as sharp and detailed as an oversaturated stock 48 mp shot on stock ROM. So I gave up on it and I don't mind. There are some stuff you can't install but if you're creative enough you can get around them. I'm sure there are good enough screen recorders out there ?

I never cared for the 48MP mode. Even in stock rom I used it only twice. Normal 12MP images turns out better than the 48MP images.
I know there are screen recorder apps available out there. But none of them were as good as the OOS screen recorder so I shifted from PE+ to EvolutionX.!
Best rom, lineageos. But it seems nobody is developing it anymore... But still using it and it's great
Let me use this thread to ask this: is there any custom rom being actively developed, that does not have gapps included? Thanks.

1. DERPFEST
The initial impression of this ROM was great. Performance and battery life was way better than the stock ROM. And the games ran very smoothly(including cod mobile and pubg mobile). And it had great features too e.g. - OOS Screen Recorder. You can't find the app anywhere on the app drawer. It sits quietly in the quick settings. If you don't see it just add from the tiles. But after two days to usage ROM started behaving weird. Occasional lags and stutters in the UI. And some apps were crashing. And sometimes the will go to a bootloop. To get out of the bootloop you have to go into TWRP and flash caches. It is not a solution though as the bootloops would occur again. So I decided to dump this ROM. I didn't know what the reason was. I posted a comment on the post of derpfest but I got no reply. Well, I had installed too many magisk modules, which were useful actually. Viper,ICE sound, Dolby Atmos, Audio Modification Library. Can this be the reason?? Is there something called "Module Overload" exist?

Here I only didn't face the bootloop problem but faced others mentioned above. So I got rid of it before it begins the stucking in bootlogo problem.

Hi,
I am planning on repairing friend's phone (screen), and while i'm on it I would also like to de-google it = unlock + flash a custom ROM + microG. I did so on lavender using LOS 17.1 and except slo-mo and some minor location issues i'm very happy with the result.
Now, the thing is that it's possible that this phone will be used by my mom (if my friend will be willing to sell - for him it's a "in the drawer" phone).
That's why my priorities are for the ROM to be stable, reliable and maintained/updated (OTA preferrably). It would also be great if it was based on AOSP 10.
I'm not looking for "fireworks" like extreme customisation, gaming options etc.
I am taking into consideration:
Havoc (main candidate)
crDroid
Bliss ROM (although 10 Q is considered a beta).
...and in andvance I'm sorry for being a bit lazy and not using "search it for myself" method, but I think that for some of you it's a quick answer, while i would be digging through xda for days
Thanks

I am taking into consideration:
Havoc (main candidate)
crDroid
Bliss ROM (although 10 Q is considered a beta).
...and in andvance I'm sorry for being a bit lazy and not using "search it for myself" method, but I think that for some of you it's a quick answer, while i would be digging through xda for days
Thanks

Just tested all 3 of them a week ago.
My personal opinion:
Havoc +++
crDroid ++
Bliss +
If I'm correct, OTA currently only works on bliss tho, but bliss currently using an outdated kernel so I recommend to wait for an update.
crDroid dev might fixed the OTA with the last update.
Even tho there's no OTA built in havoc, I still prefer it over the others. But this could change in a week, who knows?
Apart from stability, is there something worth recommending in regards to battery life? Are there custom ROMs that provide at least the same battery life as stock?
for me the best custom rom until now is this version: Bliss-v12.10-daisy-OFFICIAL-20200801
Try Posp

It is pretty outdated right now, but Lacia working on the update so I would wait a bit.
I have Havoc but I'm not happy with it because I only get 1mbit over WiFi. The front camera is not working verry well.

Wifi: works fine for me.
Camera: front cam with stock app takes pics really slowly but I use gcam anyways, so that's not an issue for me (also not really using front cam, but at least it's working with gcam).
And what do you think about Superior OS?

Dunno, haven't checked out Superior in a while. Is it still getting updates?
Yes it looks like so, there were an update at the end of June at least.
I found another rom that is very good...i am using this rom 2 days and it works perfectly so far: RROS-Q-8.5.6-20200812-daisy-Unofficial

Hi,
I am planning on repairing friend's phone (screen), and while i'm on it I would also like to de-google it = unlock + flash a custom ROM + microG. I did so on lavender using LOS 17.1 and except slo-mo and some minor location issues i'm very happy with the result.
Now, the thing is that it's possible that this phone will be used by my mom (if my friend will be willing to sell - for him it's a "in the drawer" phone).

I am in this exact same situation: I am waiting for a screen to be shipped to repair a daisy phone, and I would like to degoogle it. Unfortunately, the least painful method (installing LineageOS for microG) is not an option because this device lacks official LOS support. So when you finally go for it, I would appreciate if you would comment the steps (which ROM with signature spoofing support you choose, how do you install/flash microG, how you install/flash F-Droid...).

Try crDroid. It is official and uses LOS as base + has microG support.

I'll have to give it a try, thanks!
Hi,
I'm back - finally fixed the phone ...and now I'm "building" a degoogled device for my mom.
1) I saw that Bliss Q-based is not a beta anymore - that's good ..and it has OTA. I'm taking it into consideration.
2) On the other hand I would prefer crDroid (IF ...IF IT HAS OTA - can anyone confirm?)
3) No about Havoc which was my #1 until now - if it has no OTA (again, confirm? thanks ) it a big dis for me. BTW: Is manual update a pain-in-the-A? If it's as easy as downoad and flash via TWRP that's OK, but anything more on a longer term might be ...bleh ;P
@doragasu: If I install and degoogle my daisy I will tell you all about it. On lavender I had to follow a video on YT (microG + LineageOS), EXCEPT new microG framework is BUGGY (e.g. crashes when you try to go in "Location modules") so you have to install older version follow instructions, and when (as far as I remember) you install at least ONE location module, you can update framework.
Now, microG is NOT perfect - e.g on Telegram push notifications sometimes were missed (on Telegram X works fine), and location EITHER works 100% (GPS, WIFI, GSM) or 0% (still working on low-accuracy), although I rarely use location so it might take a while.
EDIT:
Ok, guys I think I'm gonna need some help :/ I tried to install Havoc 3.9 and I followed YT guide from here ( v=GylCEL_Xf_M ) but when I got to the flashing of the rom all i got was ERROR 1.
Help! ...i might figure it out myself, but maybe you know what's the deal. If I try to flash Magisk, all OK, but ROM, just
"Updater process ended with ERROR: 1".
...and it's exactly the same when I try to flash crDroid 6.10.
I'm clueless :/
Thanks
1.Which is the fastest, smoothie, bettery saving custom rom for Mi A2 lite?
2.Which is the fastest, smoothie, well optimised(ram management aslo) custom rom for Mi A2 lite?
Please help me and thanks in advance.
I went through several custom ROMs and ended at Android 10 crDroid. Even though most custom ROM devs now switched to Android 11 (R) development, from my experience the R ROMs are still too new and too buggy for daily use. A custom ROM probably won't help you save much battery, but for RAM management, you'll see massive improvements given how terrible it is on stock.

How different is the battery life on custom ROMs in comparison to stock?

I don't have exact measurements, but it feels about the same on the one I'm using.

This GCam: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-the_dise/f/dl0/
Remember to enable HAL3 in Settings - System - Camera HAL Switch. Also portrait mode (the blurry background thing) and HDR+ don't work on selfie camera, so you have to disable them before taking selfies. Everything else works well.
Thank you so much
Syberia os
fast system, but it has its own problems as in other custom firmwares. As I understand it, no custom firmware developer is able to fix some bugs due to the fact that some bugs are found on absolutely all firmware for several versions of android in a row.

I used Android 10 crDroid. More than often the bottom navigation bar became unresponsive. Real show stopper for me.
What's the situation now? I realised that the phone is no longer getting security updates which is not great. I haven't flashed custom in years, but I remember it was a bother to get banking apps working. Is it still a problem? What's the most reliable and secure custom out there?

Almost all of the custom ROM available for Mi A2 lite is very stable and bugless. Ram management was never a problem in custom ROMs and battery life provided by customs is very near to stock ROM ( keep in mind the battery is very old).
Banking apps should work fine. But it also depends upon the app itself. You can pass safety net and app requiring only safety net should work fine.

Do you need Magisk for safety net? I remember I had to do that with my old LG G4.
Which of ROMs is best when it comes to security updates?

For some ROMs you don't need magisk and for some you do. Almost all the ROMs for daisy are up-to-date and receive monthly updates.

There isn't a "best", your experience will determine which is the best for you. I have tried POSP, arrow, crDroid 7 and all of them are very stable and up-to-date. They differ only in customizations and such. Search what do you want and see the specific features of each ROM.
Battery life and stability cannot be compared across users and different ROMs. You can choose any one of the ROMs, all of then are very good for daily usage.

Have you been able to get Android Auto running on any of those ROM's? I tried a couple of ROM's a year ago but AA never worked except on stock (which is no longer updated as we know).

I've found unofficial LOS 18.1 the most stable. Almost no issues.
