internal storage from Sd card issues + recommended new SDcard - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hello guys since owning my new HTC 10 I have used SanDisk Ultra 128gb class 10 has internal storage been fine for while but past couple weeks since I have filled it up with apps etc I been getting SDcard missing error and the SDcard would unmount and remount itself.
But today I went to load a game and my phone rebooted itself and would keep doing so each time I inserted the SDcard in the end I had to forget SDcard and format to get the phone to see it again. Lucky enough I had nothing worth keeping but I did loose everything.
So my thinking is the SDcard is just too slow for internal storage, anyone here recommend me a high end super fast SDcard?
Also be nice to hear feedback from you that use internal storage + what type SDcard you own.
Thanks

Guess no one using SDcard with this phone.

The card apparently died..
Sent from quite brutal hTc 10 ..

The Samsung Pro and Pro+ micro sd cards are much faster than the Sandisk Ultra, around 90/95 write/read but it`s also far more expensive. A nice budget option is the Toshiba U3 128gb card, it writes 30mb/s flat and reads 80mb/s (personally benchmarked the card and use it as my daily), it cost my around $40 AUD from mymemory in the UK. 30mb/s should meet the recommended write speed for adoptable storage, hope that helps.

Its working fine now without being used for Internal storage. Having Googled this seems quite a few having same issue with the same SDCard. Looking like its just not fast enough for the job.

Thanks will give this a look. Do you have a guide for recommend adoptable storage speeds? I tried looking around the internet but didn't find anything.

[Q] Anyone here use a Class 10 SD card for Android?

I'm looking to upgrade the crummy 1GB SD card in my wife's TP2 to something faster. I was wondering if buying a class 10 card was worth it or if I should just stick with a class 6 or lower. Does the SD slot in the TP2 even support a class 10 card? Would a class 10 card be noticeably faster than a class6?
Not for this project. IIRC Nate said class 4 seems to be the sweet spot, the higher the class the worse it would be running XDandroid, but even some class 4's work better than others. Walmart has 16G class 4 sandisks for around $20, not too bad if you ask me

C10 cards are supported, but some have had issues. I would not recommend a C10 card for Android use. I doubt the phone itself will be any faster...

Ah, OK. I'll grab a class 4 from Newegg then. I was looking at a class six.

Cool. Thanks. So get a class 4 then? Is it worth it to get a 16 over a 8GB? My wife doesn't put much on her phone really and she streams all of her music.
Yeah I've got a Patriot 16Gig Class10 SD card that I picked up on sale months ago. I have been running XDAndroid on it since then and haven't noticed any benefit over my old 4gig class 2 card.
Not sure if it's related to running andriod but at first I was having issues with the card corrupting and losing all data on it, having to format it to be usable again. Formatting a few times with the HP tool seems to be helping.
I had a similar issue with my last phone (HTC Hermes) which would only work with good quality (Sandisk) SD cars, and failed with cheap chinese flash memory. The issue was that the phone wasn't able to remount the card properly in winmo when coming out of sleep, and the filesystem would become corrupt pretty quickly with folders disappearing and files having wacky filenames. Sounded like it was more of a hardware issue than anything.

Yea I use a class 4 card. Some have reported oddness with class 6, so it seems like the type of card matters as well... Because others with C6 cards say they work just fine. I've even had some people say C10 cards are fine, but most seem to have issues with C10 cards. Don't get some cheap knockoff, get a name brand.
As for size, that's entirely up to you. You can have up to a 32gb card. 512mb minimum .

I have a Patriot 16GB C10 card here too, but I no longer use it. It was constantly getting corrupted, the kernel logs were filled with I/O error messages. I'm now on a Sandisk 32GB C4 card and no more problems.

Just don't get a C10 card... I think that's what people should take away from this.
Some have said C10 cards are fine, but most say they are not. A few have had issues with C6 cards, but most say those are OK. I've never heard of people complaining about C4 or below cards - hence the reason I recommend anything C4 or less.
c10 sd android
My company name is WinDroidz and all I do is mod android and windows devices... and I have always seen huge performance gains with c10 cards, c2 sucks major, its just the transfer speed the card can move data at and clearly more speed no matter how u look at it with an SD card. Is crucial... I always used patriot c10, or topram and pqi c6 cards for android SD on windows devices and have only seen a posative result.. this is based on my personal experience of Modding more Devices then I can remember.... not from what I read somewhere or was told by someone... SD card data transfer is the slowest method of data transfer of all other common used methods... there are graphs if u Google it that show sdhc c2 cards lined up against other transfer methods like USB, ide, sata etc..... to put in perspective how ridiculously slow SD cards really are, once u see that u will understand why your phones drags ass so much when trying to pull up gallery after cache has been wiped if you have a ton of pics etc.... so if u are having problems with a higher class SD its probly not the SD and is something else you are doing, or maybe the brand as I can only vouch for the ones I've used... (wouldn't care personally about brand as pretty much everything is same manufacturer with restamped brand and packaging.. Kingston is Japan... currently using a c4 Kingston 32gb in my desire HD (wish it was a c10 but kinda pricey for that size and brand) I recommend c10 8gb for $30 on Amazon if u are using some kind of android SD rom.. or any device if u want better transfer speeds and it is very noticeable... no matter what speed u get though it will never run like nand android.. like HD2. So lets just hope the nand development for other devices continues like clk or magldr did for hd2 cause the hd2 with clk and full rom manager support is amazing
16GB class 10
Using 16GB class 10 and have had no problems related to the card, with FRX07.
I personally cannot think of any logical reason why a class 10 card of good quality should ever be a problem.
I just installed and ran Angry Birds Rio. It is slow, but works. Kind of fun to play in slow-mo!
i use 8gb c6 and haven't had any problem so far.
My 16GB RiDATA Class 6 Micro SD has been great, no problems.

Can anyone recommend me a micro sd for internal storage...

I have the Samsung ultra but when I chose to format for internal it says it's slow and recommended me a uhs class 3... for best performance .. what's the best bang for my buck.
Buy a microsd card of class 4 if you're low on your budjet..but i recommend a class 10 microsd card some good brands for microsd cards: kingston, sandisk, TDK, strontium (cheap), J-Tech (also cheap). Check strontium, it's good! Just remember all these brands have both class 4 and class 10!!

don't write bull****! Class 4 is far away from being even usable for internal storage, even Class 10 is not enough,if you haven't tried don't write or recommend something to someone, this is obviously stupid recommendation...class 4 for internal storage... from my experience, Desire EYE will not accept even most of the UHS3 memory cards because of performance
If you have a chance to try out more UHS3 cards, try them. For me,Samsung and Kingston UHS3 card have not worked,Sandisk is fine, but had many problems allowing it to be internal storage,Desire EYE on Marshmallow is not working properly with extending internal storage, and there are no guides for it,so i was working with it few days until it was ok,but formating to ExFAT helped it so maybe thats's the problem. But at first,be prepared to have problems with it,even finishing with havin no extended storage. For example, card which is working in my phone as extended storage is not working with my girlfriends Desire EYE and we have bought it from same shop.
I'm using Sandisk 64GB sdcard as internal storage on my EYE.
And I got the same message - 'slow!!! give me UHS3 sdcard'.
I brought UHS3 sdcard and insert it into my desire EYE. But the same message was showed up.
I think desire EYE can't test the maximum speed of sdcard. So, it always show up that message.
I found the hidden way to go over that message.
Format the sdcard to FAT32 on the PC.
Start 'Format as internal' with that sdcard. The same message will show up - 'slow!!! bring UHS3!!!'
But, there will be 'CONTINUE' button at the bottom on the left side.
Press the 'CONTINUE' button and everything will be okay.
The performance is good.
I can't feel the different between using sdcard as internal and original.
Key point is formatting SDcard to FAT32.
Formatting to exFAT, formatting on the phone, removing the partitions.... all do not work.
Try this~!

Micro SDHC UHS-I issues when using as an internal storage

Hi all,
I've been using my MOTO G5 for almost a month now and I'm pretty satisfied with it tho I've encountered some small annoyances with this phone.
But just yesterday I bought a Lexar MicroSDHC UHS-I 32GB for my phone and tried to format it as an internal storage replacing my Sandisk MicroSD Class 4.
After formatting it as an internal storage in my surprise the phone prompts that the memory card that I've used was "too slow" (considering this is a class 10) then reverted it back to portable storage, restarted my phone and then tried the same procedure but still the "too slow" message prompt was showing.
I felt frustrated with it, re-inserted my Sandisk MicroSD Class 4 then formatted it as my internal storage but the message "too slow" never prompt.
I just want to know if there is someone who had experience this unfortunate thing? what did you to solve this issue? or should I stick with my class 4 sd card or better yet stick with the 16gb internal storage of my phone?
Thanks!
yes, i tried to use an A-Data class 10 uhs-1 32 gb and i received the same message, but i thought my card is defect, it was used in my dvr camera and after 10 sec it stopping to recording, i think is broken. On the phone after 2 days, it blocked my phone, no one app working, everything was blocked. I remove the card and restart the phone and everything was fine. Sorry for my english, but i think that specs of the card its lies
Try running this app. Tests if the card is fake or not. There are quite a few around online that are have MUCH less than advertised capacity / speed and i'm pretty sure that the internal storage option on Nougat requires a proper fast card.

HTC 10: A devourer of SD cards?

Hi!
Today my SD card died and took some pictures with it to the grave, fortunately nothing very important. It may not have been the most expensive card, but it was a fast one and I used it as internal storage. It didn't show any signs of deterioration before it died. I tried to read the card with my PC and two tablets but none of my devices is able to even see the card.
Before buying a new SD card I want to ask a few things:
Does the HTC 10 have more problems with SD cards than other phones in your opinion?
Should I use my new card as internal storage again or do you recommend to use it as external storage?
Is it worthwhile to buy an expensive card? I laid my eyes on this one: SDSQXCG-064G-GN6MA (SanDisk Extreme PRO microSDXC Memory Card Plus SD Adapter up to 100 MB/s, Class 10, U3, V30, A1 - 64 GB). It costs about 50€.
I hope that you want to share your thoughts with me.
Regards,
Benjamin
If the card was inexpensive and fast, I would think that the compromise made was on build quality/reliability. Using the card as internal storage will wear on the sdcard more than using it as external storage (more reads/writes, more heat) because it will store apps and app data on the sd card.
I don't think the HTC 10 has a problem with sd cards, I haven't heard this issue come up before.
If you have enough space for apps on the internal storage, I would recommend keeping the sd card as external storage.
However, if you still need to use a card as internal storage, you definitely want to get a more expensive card.
Sandisk extreme pro is a good choice because it's made for use with devices like GoPros that do constant writing for extended periods of time, meaning that they can handle the heat that builds up when constantly writing to the sd card.
Sometimes it could really just be pure chance, maybe you got a bad card that died early, but I definitely think it would have lasted longer as external storage.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had a similar problem with any phone with an sd card as internal storage.
The thing is - current sd card technology is not suitable for adoptable storage. Multiple read write proceses are killing memory cards. So, until someone makes a card that can take the beating of multiple read write proceses, just use your card as it's ment to be used - as a removable storage and you'll be just fine [emoji6]
Thank you both for your well formulated and competent response.
I've taken all these points into consideration when I chose to use my first SD card as internal storage. I really would like to know if a high quality card could last the expected lifetime of my HTC 10 when using it as internal storage. I wanted to avoid the limitations Google imposed on write access to the external card but when I saw the limitations of the internal storage solution I was unsure if it was a good decision.
It's good to hear that you do not have the experience that the HTC 10 has a problem with SD cards. With that information in mind I can buy an expensive SD card with good conscience.

Let's hope that more users are going to share their opinion with us.
I've just sent back my second SanDisk Extreme PRO card in 18 months. The first one stopped working after just 4 months in the HTC 10, the second one a few weeks ago. The circumstances were identical, I wrote larger amounts of data in a short time and the phone started saying that the card has to be formatted. I could use a reader connected to my laptop to get most of my data back, but the phone insisted on a format. I'm not sure if it was the SanDisk cards or the phone, either way, I ordered a Samsung card this time. Luckily amazon.de is extremely customer friendly and just gave me my money back in both cases.
I always use transcend, I've had a 128gb external SD card in since may 2016, all camera shots goto external card, all flashing and backups goto external card. Never had a problem, touch wood ?
Guys, are any of you using Spotify? I have consistently had microSD cards die after downloading songs for offline use i.e. two phones and three different microSD cards.
I use a Samsung evo card as removable storage since January, never had any problems with it. They are a bit more expensive, but it is worth it in my opinion. I use it mainly for Spotify and Netflix downloads as well as pictures (wallpapers) and ringtones... Don't use a rather inexpensive card as adoptable storage, since they are too slow. Or even expensive cards for that matter In a few years, sd cards will be fast enough, but not today. Also, I fail to see a practical use for using the card as adoptable storage as of right now since 32 gb are plenty of space for apps

I did not know that it is possible to tell the Spotify app to use external storage. Will try when I get my new card.

I'm going to buy a card produced by a reputable company this time, for sure. But I thought that cards with the A1 specification (Application performance class] would be fast enough for use as adopted storage. But you are right, 32 Gb is a lot of space for apps.

Actually, if Spotify recognises your sd card as removable storage, it even is the default setting

I've used Samsung evo and Sandisk Ultra Extreme and the both failed a short time after downloading Spotify songs!
I've had a Transcend 64GB card fail after a few months. It was inserted as external storage and I was able to recover its contents on a PC. I was able to put it back in the phone without formatting it, just tried a few times until eventually it worked.
It happened when it was very hot outside, not sure if this is related or not. I wonder how many failed cards are failing during hot weather, during heavy phone use, or in hot climate areas.
I've switched to a Samsung 128GB evo plus now, u3 speed, so far so good. Fingers crossed. Judging by this thread though, it does seem that this phone kind of eats through SD cards.

This is precisely what I wanted to know in this thread. Before buying my first card for the HTC 10 I read a number of threads that suggested this phone specifically has problems with cards bigger than 64 GB. But the reaction to my thread doesn't seem to be so hysterical to me.
I been using a Toshiba Exceria M302 128GB as external storage since the phone first launched and it hasn't failed on me yet, touchwood. Although I only been using up to around 50GB usage, I have re-download my Spotify collection a couple times.
The SD card in my HTC 10 is going on 15 months old, and it's still ticking. I have never used it as adaptive storage. It just stores photos taken on the camera (which are backed up to Google Photos). Some games offer to save data onto the SD card, so I do that as well. It's a Samsung 64GB PRO (class 10).
Not sure if the UHS-1/3 cards will fare better.

what micro sd are you using?

what micro sd card do you recommend which is compatible for the razer phone? looking for a bang for the buck with fast read/write and doesnt need to be above 512gb. Thanks
I have personally gone with the Samsung 256GB Evo Plus Class 10 / U3 card from Samsung Mobile on amazon. Currently still on sale £114, I never really use the camera unless on holiday or need to snap a quick pic or video of something as its quicker than writing it down. Conisdering my last family holiday I took the 128GB iPhone 6s size wise the 256gb is more than enough as the only game i have installed is hearthstone. All my apps take up a total 21.33/58.90 (GB) on the internal drive leaving the SD for the camera.
i have a toshiba 128gb, class 10, u3 and the phone lags considerably when using the external cards memory to access.
i have it formated as internal memory as well.
i thought U3 class 10 is the fastest you can get but it still tells me the card is slow when i go to format it.
