Terrible Battery Life. How Do I Diagnose the cause? - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I'm experiencing pathetic battery life on my 10, which is just about a month old. This is without me using 4G LTE at all. Only Wi-Fi + 3G.
- I'm seeing drain in the range of 10-15% an hour with light usage.
- SOT never goes beyond 3-3.5 hours.
- I've installed the GSAM Battery monitor app. But there's nothing out of the ordinary on the stats. Screen always seems to consume about 30% of the battery. Rest is small bits from multiple apps.
I'm going to have to do a factory reset to fix this. But I really don't want to.
Is there any other fix?

For me 3 - 3.5hrs SOT was normal on stock. Check settings/location/scanning and turn off wifi scanning that has been known to drain battery

+1 on the wifi scan. That will ghost your battery. I turn off vibration feedback as well along with restricting location permission on most of apps so my phone isn't constantly looking for itself on gps which will also drain battey

Disable FB notifications, wireless and BT scan, wireless notifications and optimalization . Set wifi to never when screen is off

Battery life is subjective.
It'll depend on what you have running, what you restored, the apps and their state, your phone settings, brightness etc. What's connected and what you are doing on your phone..
HTC hasn't historically been the go to phone for great battery life.
A few hours 3-4 SOT is pretty decent for a phone.
You could do the normal things like, switching off connectivity options when not in use, ie location, wifi, data, NFC.
Check what apps are running, for example if Google photos is backing up your pics it's going to hit battery life.. Other apps will do the same, Facebook etc.
I'm not saying don't use your phone but depending on your habits you'll have varying degrees of stamina from your battery.
First thing to do, lighten the load, then grab better battery stats and see if anything is keeping it awake.

i suspect my router here and dhcp lease to be an issue, battery issue happens every dhcp lease (24hrs = 86400) when phone wifi does not turn off wifi after 15 minutes. static ip does not help at all, only rebooting wireless process on router. other than that battery life seems ok - 48 hrs light use.

[Q] Is this unusual battery drain from the screen?

Hello everyone! I just switched to my first Android device and am truly enjoying the experience. I can't believe I was using an iPhone for so long. I finished draining my battery for the first time and recharged it and am draining it again. My phone indicates that the screen is consuming around 66-70% of the battery drainage while everything else is quite low such as the Android OS taking up about 12%. Is this typical and does it improve over time? Thank you for your help.
this is normal but seems like that is pretty heavy use. if your phone was barely used then that is not normal.
I am going to further diagnose this. I have my brightness set to auto. I wasn't really using the phone that much. I flashed it to the yakju build and it is running 4.0.2. Is there anything I should do to test the phone?
what is your screen on time
I'm looking at
9h 56m on bettery
Android OS 33%
Phone Idle 30%
Cell Standby 22%
Screen 9% (on time 9m)
Wifi 5%
Google Services 2%
This is after the phone being nearly untouched most of the day, no calls or texts and nothing being done but checking my email once not too long ago. It's on Auto-brightness which sucks because it appears to be on the darkest setting but without that my battery seems to go from full charge to 50% in 1-2hours with moderate usage (Browsing the web, Checking email, Browsing Market, few phone calls and texts) and it sucks that I feel like I cant play with the phone because it'll be dead when I need it and without Auto-brightness the battery dies even quicker.
Almost feel like I need to be tethered to the charger.

you either have really bad signal and/or 4g and/or a process keeping the phone awake, in your case the high cell standby time suggests the first two
This seems common for the lte version. The gsm version gets very good battery life especially idle drain. Turn off lte is your best option.

Assuming you have the screen on a lot then yes. Those big beautiful screens are hard on a battery.
If you're on the LTE version using 3G only you will get around 3 hours screen on time MAX.
GSM version you will probably get 3-4 hours screen on time per charge.

[Q] battery drain for LC-ICS

hello guys,
i flashed the radio to 12.62.60.27p_26.13.04.19_M after which i flashed update-LC-ICS-1.0.beta4-DesireHD-signed.zip by wiping completely. During standby, the drain was very less (about 1 mA , occasionally reaching 5 mA.) After 24 hours, the drain increased beyond 10 mA, sometimes even reaching 40mA or more in standby mode. It was only after i rebooted the device, the drain is somewhat acceptable now.
Is this normal or something is wrong? what could be the reason?
in the above cases, the phone was in standby mode, no calls, no data, only 2G. the only difference in the second case was additional applications like facebook, etc but no data, no sync.
btw, i just rebooted my phone and lost battery level from 3.735 to 3.691 , drop of 14% as shown in current widget.
any suggestions ?
I'm running cm7 and for me that's quite normal.
The drain per 5 minutes is between 1mA and 10mA while in 2G standby, screen off, data off.
The drain of course jumps up to 40mA to 200mA if the screen is on and i'm using the phone (wifi on, using google reader etc)
Getting 1mA per 5 minutes all the time sounds a bit unrealistic to me. Maybe in airplane mode and no screen on time.
I guess your problem could be the additional apps. Maybe an app is running wild?
And might i ask what you mean by "battery level"? Are you talking about the mV?
First of all, make sure you're are really wiping everything. Just to be sure, you may follow this steps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1226016
You can also take a look in your battery stats, the battery usage of mediaserver. In come ICS based ROMs, it drained battery a lot.
I tested LCs 1.0.v4 and also got poor battery performance, may be inherent to this ROM.

hi, yes, i have been following the link for wiping since the time i sarted flashing ROMS..
but what you are saying could be right.. the ROM itself could have battery issues...
I'm running LC ICS v1.2. I haven't seen any significant battery drain though I'm using an Inspire 4G. There's also an undervolting app on the second post in his thread. Undervolting has improved the battery performance slightly as well for me...

[Q] battery problems?

Hello.
I'm using nexus 7 2013 lte for a couple of weeks and i experience some troubles that quite bother me. Device is running android 4.4.2 installed OTA.
First of all, battery drain in sleep mode is kind of unpredictable. At night (8-9 hours to be exact) device can consume 3%, 5%, 15 or even 20. My first thought was to check installed third-party apps which could cause it. But i didn't manage to find the reason of the problem, the statistics of battery looks OK, tablet can work fine for a couple of days, and then same thing occurs. I found no dependance to 3g and wifi on/off: there can be 3% for night when device is just left with wireless connections, and there can be 10-15% with airplane mode on and precursory reboot. Battery drain happens only in sleep mode, and battery times are absolutely normal on heavy tasks (10 hours of 720p video, 3:45 of gaming). The other device I use works just fine with same apps installed, same settings and cellular carrier: consumption on idle is low and constant.
Some weird jumps in battery level also can be noticed: from current level to 100% and back on: example 1
example 2
No chargers or usb were connected, temperature around was constant. Can't find any reasonable explanation to these jumps.
So should I suspect that my item has any hardware faults of battery, or there can be some software issues?
And another minor question: how good should be wifi reception on nexus? The "other device" I mentioned above (which is galaxy note 2) has solid, good level and speed of connection, while nexus seems quite worse on this subject. For example, in the room where I am at the moment, note has 3/4 bars in wifi symbol and fine, constant speed, and nexus has 1 or 2 bars of 4, and connection looks pretty laggy.
Thanks in advance for any response.
Try factory resetting and testing sleep mode battery consumption again without installing/touching anything. If its a hardware problem, it will happen again. Wifi reception should be the same or better then note normally, but as i said, factory reset and try, if the problem(s) persist, its a hardware problem.
Those battery graph peaks were still present last night.
I've just performed factory reset, will see if it changes behavior of my device.
Thanks!
So, after factory reset on pure system without any non-stock apps I got these results:
Battery consumption on idle was usually between 1 and 1.5% per hour. There was a little of instability (marked red on the screenshot), but just a little. Nothing like sudden 15% per hour that used to happen before. Is 1.5% good enough for sleep mode on stock firmware with 3g(not lte, 3g) and wifi turned on?
No jumps to 100% were noticed during these 24 hours, but they didn't happen every day. They worried me most, so I'll continue to check if they occur again. Hope they disappeared after factory reset.
As for the next step, I gonna install my usual apps and see if it affects battery perfomance.
By the way, about wifi reception: it still had 1-2 bars where galaxy note has 3-4. But then I ran some speedtests, and connection speed on nexus was usually significantly faster then note's. So wifi works just fine, it is just a matter of wifi icon calibration.
For a bit my batt life was suffering. I found it worked to turn it off, charge it fully, and then turn it on again. I actually wanted to know if there r any good task killers for it?

How Bad is Your WiFi Standby Drain?

Reading through some battery threads I was told that the "proper" way to check your overnight drain was to charge up to 100% and not touch it until the next morning. I tried this last night and WiFi drain was in the 30% range (I used my phone before taking the screenshot which is why it's at 22%) with a total drop of 7% (100-93% over 8 hours).
Does this seem high?
I've got WiFi, NFC, battery saver location, mobile data, and double tap to wake on. The phone is rooted and I'm using a custom kernel (but I'm pretty sure it happened with the stock kernel too). I also have an Android Wear watch attached all night. On AOSP ROMs on my OP3T overnight drain was around 2% if I started at 100% and WiFi was never more than maybe 6% of total drain. Again, I'm not asking how to fix this, I'm just wondering if this is something that others are experiencing.
Thanks!
Mine dropped 2% over four hours of sleep. I'll try with battery saver on.
Mine averages about 3% in 8hrs with wifi on, I'll post a screenshot tomorrow, on freedomos using simplegx kernel
My WiFi drain is very low during idle. Like most flagships of this era.
mine is as same as op, but last night i charged it upto 74 and slept and when i got up after 6 hrs or so it dropped 2 %, strange ... maybe it's the way the phone is charged and calibrated for dash charging
I'm loosing 4-5% in 8 hours.

Thanks for these screenshots. Obviously I don't have nearly the SOT that you do in my screenshot, but it looks like if our SOTs were the same you'd probably have similar WiFi percent usage.
Mine's been surprisingly bad - at least, worse than my Moto G5S, Galaxy S8+ or iPhone 8 Plus were. I'm losing like 5-7% every four hours, my battery drain while connected to wifi at work is way worse than either of the other phones mentioned too.
All in all it's kind of disappointing considering how good the OP5T is in literally every other regard.

We may have similar WiFi usage. But my drain is about .5% per hour, overnight. I don't consider that high, and battery consumption has to be attributed to something. Here is my current usage since yesterday's charge.
On 8.0 the WiFi drain % is even lower, but idle drain per hour is the same. So it doesn't really matter.
Very bad.. Battery go. Down quickly in night..
My wifi drain is also really bad on the latest 4.7.4
Hope they release a fix soon...
Edit... I did a fresh install with stock 4.7.4 and it isn't as bad but still is present. At least it's more tolerable.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A5010 using Tapatalk
So I did another test last night (4.7.4 and SimpleGX kernel) and had 3% drain. With all the comments here I think the high percentage of WiFi is normal and probably not affecting battery life a lot. I am starting to think the kernel may be providing better results than stock 4.7.4 though since a lot of people are mentioning poor battery on 4.7.4.
I don't even know how long, all I can say is my battery drains 3% every 9 and a half hours. Both bluetooth and wifi was on. This is on the stock rom and kernal, not sure how you guys have such high battery drain... Are you guys sure it isn't another app hijacking your battery? Because from my experience the battery stats isn't always perfect. Sometimes I was told that it was my screen (on my old phone) in which it was actually a 3rd party app. After removing the app, my battery drain went a lot slower than usual.

Just tried that setting last night and it doesn't make much difference.
For all wondering I have an Android Wear device connected 24/7 and location set to battery saving. I also keep NFC and data on all night. I'm not using screen-off gestures though.
I wish it was only 7% or something like that on my OP5T.
I used to be one of you 3%-battery-"drain"-at-night-guys, until the official update to Oreo. Now it uses 36% in 6h38m, of which WiFi is reported being 29% (1044mah, despite 0m active and background usage reported). There is 2.8MB additional use according to the WiFi data usage report that was set to count from today, yet the numbers per app have decreased, so there goes reliability on that. I haven't added or removed any apps, only wiped cache after the update. On standby, it only takes 18 hours for it to drain, which used to be several days.
Another weird thing is that WiFi is terribly slow since the same update, but only on this device. (No numbers yet)
Right now my plan is to test all the mentioned related settings, as well as WiFi off, make screenshots after each nightly test, and finally do a complete wipe and perform the same tests with a minimum of apps, and then redo them again with my usual set of apps. It could still be one or more apps that misbehave on Oreo specifically I suppose, so if there's any indication for that, I will start eliminating apps one by one until I find the culprit.

13-Hour Screen-on-Time Battery Life?

Recently bought this phone and am getting 6-8 hours SoT at half brightness in 1 day.
I feel this is surprisingly low, considering many reviewers on YouTube are getting up of 10+ hours, with one even reaching 13 hours /watch?v=31twODBCnNU skip to 8.20 mins.
Through gsam it looks like apps account for 70% of drain (screen only 30%?), of which most seems to come from Kernel (Android OS) and Android System (see image links). I am worried this is what is draining my battery.
What SoT are people getting and how much battery is being used by Kernel (Android OS) and Android System?

If cell signal reception is good I get upto 10 hrs. In my work place signal is poor so getting around 7-8 hrs. Overall get 1-1.5 days easily
I can second that. In optimal conditions I get up to 10 hours of SoT.
Have you disabled any apps and services to get that SoT? I disabled some google apps i don't use, facebook app and some more, disabled aod, double tap to wake and still can't get more than 7-8 hours.
Never gotten 10 hours before. How did your manage that? Anyone else want to share their SoT?
My average SOT with medium usage (Browser, Youtube, Telegram etc) is 10+ hours. Wifi only, no cellular, bluetooth off, gps off, nfc off, auto sync off, brightness 60%, night mode on, black theme on most apps even keyboard, disabled a lot of samsung/google apps with package disabler, disabled all bixby stuff, aod off, all the gestures off except palm swipe, power saving mode medium with CPU limited at 70% (no lag whatsoever PUBG plays fine)
With heavy usage (PUBG) battery drains 10-12% per hour
I get 7 hours SOT with heavy usage , gps Bluetooth, 4g on both sims ,all other services active , still get 7 hours .
Sent from my SM-A705FN using Tapatalk
Can anyone post screenshots of their usage through device care/gsam app drain?
I usually get close to 11 hours with 20-25% brightness and adaptive power saving on.
Sync, location and wifi always on.
AOD - tap to show.
Overnight standby power drain is excellent...WiFi and mobile on.

When gaming I get around 5 to 6 hours.
Am on the May patch.
Hi Guys! I am new to samsung, I recently bought an A70. It is superb phone, I love it.
Please, is there any way to change wallpaper automatically without installing any 3rd party app?
How can we get 8-10 hours SOT? I am satisfied with 6-8 hours after Huawei P9 (it had only 3-4 hrs.)
thanks a lot in advance
Please Help
which pckage disabler you use boss i have recently updated my os and package disabler 15 dos not work. please share link of yours
Thanks.

I usually get around 6-7 hours, but thats with heavy gaming and bad mobile data signal reception and with 20-25% battery remaining, cuz I think draining the battery often will affect the lifespan of the battery.
Off topic but I just want to ask, is 3gb ram used by the system normal? I have the 6gb ram variant.
