Multitasking/RAM - Note 7 Real Life Review

You're busy and don't have time to wait, which is why you need to stop reading this thread and get back to organizing your Pogs. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 performs when multitasking. A higher rating indicates that the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 keeps many apps in memory so that they don't need to reload, and that when moving between apps, transitions are smooth and performance is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

So much better than on AOSP (MM). I am coming from a Nexus 6P and the only way I could get dual screens was with Xposed and root. RAM management could be better. It reloads apps a lot but not much more than the 6P did.

Again could be better. No reason why only 1.5 gig of RAM is available on a 2016 device when there's 4 gigs of RAM available.
Ditch touchwiz Samsung. Please?

So far this is a great phone

Is Touchwix the cause of the large loss of available RAM?

Could more users please reboot note 7 and report in how much RAM is availible after Touchwiz boot, thanks.

Memory handling is a little better, though I still find myself having to manually close out background apps when the phone is slow.

Ended up rebooting this morning and had 1.5GB of ram available after reboot. Was running on average 2.x before.

There is enough RAM to work perfectly.

The multitasking works perfect

I'm sick of all the RAM threads. The way Android works, it needs to utilize available RAM for caching to speed up app access. If you keep killing everything and freeing up RAM, you are slowing down your phone.
That's a very simplistic explanation, but that's how it works. Android will use a fair amount of available RAM. That's normal. Don't sweat it.

Alot of people make the mistake of thinking used memory is a bad thing, this is untrue on the android platform, the more ram being used the better performance you are getting due to the fact android OS knows how to close down applications itself when in need. This is also the reason why app-killer apps are bad not good for your phone. Think about it, ram is kind of like your phones short term memory, it you free that up then it will take longer for it to open processes. Be lucky you are using an AOSP rom, sense roms usually only have about 100 to 150mb of ram free because of all the things senseUI requires. The amount of ram you have free is normal. Unless you get down to like 20mb of ram there is no reason to be concerned whatsoever. If ram wasn't meant to be used then why would they be progressively increasing the amount of it in each new device released?
P.S. with the sound of your concern i can only assume you are coming from a blackberry device prior to your current android.
You are wrong, before my inc2. I had inc1,and before inc1 i had an env2.lol....but i dont now much about android system.

Hey man, it's all good. I just made that assumption because i have lots of friends that came from blackberry, I did myself and anyone that has ran one of those devices knows that you have to constantly watch your ram. Was just trying to give you some info so you don't know not to worry about ram consumption on the android platform.
Ok,bro i just want to learn more about this system.

No prob man, I'm off work until monday so I've just been bored cycling through the posts in the Inc2 section today lol.

Galaxy Nexus lags hard, ROM/KERNEL doesn't help.

Topic says it all. Stock/CM/Carbon(Linaro)/DU's/pacman/codefire, it doesn't matter which one is installed, my device lags like a *****. I switched to nova launcher from apex (to see if the launcher was causing it all,) and the homescreen scrolls better, but opening apps, doing anything within apps, switching apps and anything not related to the launcher still lags like crazy. I've tried LagFix, different kernels, nothing works. I close apps using the recent apps tab, doesn't help. My GS2 performs leaps and bounds better than this phone. Am I missing something. Is there anything I can do to make this phone not suck? I really want to like the phone. I have the Sprint version.

I'll try that.
Running some side by side comparison's with my GS2 and GN using system panel, the GS2 always has over 200MB ram available, and the GN has 80 or less. I tried to make sure the same apps were opened (active) on each phone.
That sounds like a factory reset including format system is needed.

I haven't tried 4.3 yet. Was waiting for most of the issue's to be worked out. Haven't looked into it in a week or two.

Factory reset to stock through fastboot. Stock ran a whole lot better after that. Now I'm running a 4.3 ROM.

I was on 4.2.2. I never read any complaints about lag, or about it being a bad version...anywhere. Would have got off of it sooner if that were the case.
I upgraded to 4.3 with a factory reset. Not any lag issues at all. 4.3 actually seemed to have made android run more efficiently on my Gnex.

Read about TRIM implementation @4.3. thats the main improvement over 4.2.2 IMO

The whole lot of us whined about it on xda, g+, twitter etc
Funny thing is i full wiped and flashed back to 4.1.2 from 4.2.2 and the phone was still lagging. Didn't think it was possible but 4.3 really fixed this phone for me. was battling the lag for over a year. Lagfix trim, filling all the free space and deleting all the files, tried everything that was recommended and nothing helped. Thank you google for finally releasing 4.3
the only lag from 4.3 comes from when I use google navigation. It gets bogged down pretty bad. I think that has to do with the undeniable fact that 1gb of ram is not going to cut it anymore with today's memory consumption from modern apps.
4.3 has brought a host of new problems for me. Lagging and force closes plus a lot of app problems. Enough so that I'm shopping for a new phone which sucks because I love the Gnex.
4.2.1
Android 4.2.1 was the last OTA that android released to my GNex. I put the Warped ROM on, and it was a lagfest, especially when I had all 10gb of my music on it. I had to wipe and reset to 4.2.1 before I could even put on another ROM without it freezing during startup.
Have you see if you have the lastest radio image flash in your bootloader?

It seems to me like one of the big bottlenecks in the Galaxy Nexus's performance is the abysmal I/O performance.
If anything whatsoever pings the storage, it seems to stall the device. I've had the phone lock up entirely requiring a battery pull by doing enough read/write, something I can't do to older and newer phones I own. Just the Galaxy Nexus.
TRIM in 4.3 helps mitigate it, but I think the fact is something is seriously awful in the Galaxy Nexus I/O stack, presumably on the hardware level, since this is the only device I own that has this issue.
My 4.3 install was acting up (data issues... :\) so I went back to stock 4.2.1 with golden kernel. Phone is running pretty smooth. Seems like the fastboot factory reset did the trick so far. Funny thing about it, I just now realized I flashed the 4.3 kernel. Phone is running really well, so uhh, whatever haha.

[Q] from 32gb to 25gb available?

I noticed after restoring my phone loading lifeless14 that my available storage diminished drastically- 7 GB! I'm sure 25 is more than enough, but an 7gb difference is a little concerning. I actually think I may have noticed it after flashing beanstalk (went lifeless; I just can't find a "stable" custom rom for some reason). Any idea where this overwhelming large chunk of data could've gone, and more importantly, is any of it recoverable?
Well formatting any storage medium will take away some space. I think with just the rom installed and the internal SD formatted is 27gb if you don't have anything installed

Check for a logcat. It'll be in root of SD with stock. And /mnt/shell/emulated/0 if you're running any CM ROM.

Yes it's 27 gigs with just the stock rom installed. Might be able to get up to 28.5 gb with a barebones aosp rom, but because of the formatting android uses your not going to get the full 32 gb ever

Well... No matter what formatting you use, the format will always take up space

Checking for logcat was the first thing I did. And I knew formating would take up space, just had no idea it would take up that much. Most people don't even tip their waiters 20% these days.

I originally had this thought too, but as said by the thread's contributor @xboxfanj :

People have reported increases on the Nexus S, which is also not Qualcomm. It won't brick you, so try it and report your results here. If nothing else, you can always restore a backup (or just reflash the ROM you're on, which will also restore the system partition).

So just try it and if it doesn't work, ditch it.
I tried them. It didnt hurt anything. But I dont know if its making anything better.

As far as I saw in and out of the thread, the vast "improvement" is largely limited to benchmarks... Using the patch, I managed to get my Photon Q (dual-core MSM8960 + 1GB RAM) to score 19404 in AnTuTu (typically it scores ~16500), which almost beats that of a stock Nexus 4. However, since the phone doesn't lag originally, I can't see any improvement in day-to-day usage.

It's hard to say if it's smoother than before, but it certainly feels smooth with it.
Not exactly sure what it does. It's not an AppSpy, like Samsung, where it bumps up the freq when it detects an app (such as quadrant).

2 GB of ram yet only about 400-500 MB are useable? The rest is always being chewed up.

The bloatware are actively running in the background when you power up the OS. The only way you can gain more RAM is disable the apps or root then delete the apps permanently.

I'm not new to android. I'm just shocked that they have that much crap running ... I did root it last night. Hoping for a slimrom becoming available... Slimbean on my s2 was by far best experience I had
A significant portion of the memory is used to support the high resolution display rather than for bloat ware. I'm using a Nexus 10 with the same screen resolution and have seen the same complaints. As Android uses a very different memory model than MS-Windows, managing memory much better, it would be better to judge memory deficiency by the lag caused by Android having to reload apps it removed from memory due to low memory.
Basically with Android unused memory is wasted memory.
