2 GB of ram yet only about 400-500 MB are useable? The rest is always being chewed up.
Am I the only one experiencing this?

The bloatware are actively running in the background when you power up the OS. The only way you can gain more RAM is disable the apps or root then delete the apps permanently.

I'm not new to android. I'm just shocked that they have that much crap running ... I did root it last night. Hoping for a slimrom becoming available... Slimbean on my s2 was by far best experience I had
A significant portion of the memory is used to support the high resolution display rather than for bloat ware. I'm using a Nexus 10 with the same screen resolution and have seen the same complaints. As Android uses a very different memory model than MS-Windows, managing memory much better, it would be better to judge memory deficiency by the lag caused by Android having to reload apps it removed from memory due to low memory.
Basically with Android unused memory is wasted memory.

Alot of people make the mistake of thinking used memory is a bad thing, this is untrue on the android platform, the more ram being used the better performance you are getting due to the fact android OS knows how to close down applications itself when in need. This is also the reason why app-killer apps are bad not good for your phone. Think about it, ram is kind of like your phones short term memory, it you free that up then it will take longer for it to open processes. Be lucky you are using an AOSP rom, sense roms usually only have about 100 to 150mb of ram free because of all the things senseUI requires. The amount of ram you have free is normal. Unless you get down to like 20mb of ram there is no reason to be concerned whatsoever. If ram wasn't meant to be used then why would they be progressively increasing the amount of it in each new device released?
P.S. with the sound of your concern i can only assume you are coming from a blackberry device prior to your current android.
You are wrong, before my inc2. I had inc1,and before inc1 i had an env2.lol....but i dont now much about android system.

Hey man, it's all good. I just made that assumption because i have lots of friends that came from blackberry, I did myself and anyone that has ran one of those devices knows that you have to constantly watch your ram. Was just trying to give you some info so you don't know not to worry about ram consumption on the android platform.
Ok,bro i just want to learn more about this system.

Awww sheeet!!! I hope this is better than everything else so far.
ok this is BY FAR the best ICS experience. I've had every rom and they've all done a decent job but this is amazing. no lag at all, holding home button to pull up recent apps is smooth, swiping to close is snappy, and the browser feels up to date! Im in love again. This + Air Kernel= ICS heaven

What about the apps to sd apps on the market?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
I don't think you can move apps to SD anymore. It was either after ICS or JB that its not supported. My friend uses a mod that switches the internal and external storage. If I can find the mod I'll link you to it.

This app works perfectly. So far no problems.
I swear I'm not trying to be rude
Why would you want to do that? Our phones have ample storage now, it's not like the old days with the Nexus One. The internal NAND is way faster anyhow.
If you think less than 12 GBs of useable space is sufficient or ample these days, then we've certainty got a failure to communicate. LOL
A few gameloft titles and that ample space is toast...

True novel haha. I want a way to make phone think that my sd card is part of my internal. There's a mod called externalsd something in the international forum. But it's not released yet.

Yes it will change it but till now nothing all you to move apps.
The image you have there is not showing your actual device's memory--which I believe, with that mod, would show as your SD Card memory.
While you might feel its better to at least have more memory than the meager 12GB +/- of the device, the fact remains that, that isn't how its supposed to look or work.
Today when I flashed CleanROM ATT 1.2, regardless of what kernel I flashed, I couldn't get that SD <--> Internal memory swap method to work the way it used to so I gave up and just did totally clean install, SD card and all.
It bothered me more than not having enough memory for caboodles of games.
Here is how it show. I attached earlier a bad screen capture..

I noticed after restoring my phone loading lifeless14 that my available storage diminished drastically- 7 GB! I'm sure 25 is more than enough, but an 7gb difference is a little concerning. I actually think I may have noticed it after flashing beanstalk (went lifeless; I just can't find a "stable" custom rom for some reason). Any idea where this overwhelming large chunk of data could've gone, and more importantly, is any of it recoverable?
Well formatting any storage medium will take away some space. I think with just the rom installed and the internal SD formatted is 27gb if you don't have anything installed

Check for a logcat. It'll be in root of SD with stock. And /mnt/shell/emulated/0 if you're running any CM ROM.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yes it's 27 gigs with just the stock rom installed. Might be able to get up to 28.5 gb with a barebones aosp rom, but because of the formatting android uses your not going to get the full 32 gb ever

Well... No matter what formatting you use, the format will always take up space

Checking for logcat was the first thing I did. And I knew formating would take up space, just had no idea it would take up that much. Most people don't even tip their waiters 20% these days.
You're busy and don't have time to wait, which is why you need to stop reading this thread and get back to organizing your Pogs. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 performs when multitasking. A higher rating indicates that the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 keeps many apps in memory so that they don't need to reload, and that when moving between apps, transitions are smooth and performance is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
So much better than on AOSP (MM). I am coming from a Nexus 6P and the only way I could get dual screens was with Xposed and root. RAM management could be better. It reloads apps a lot but not much more than the 6P did.
Again could be better. No reason why only 1.5 gig of RAM is available on a 2016 device when there's 4 gigs of RAM available.

Is Touchwix the cause of the large loss of available RAM?

Memory handling is a little better, though I still find myself having to manually close out background apps when the phone is slow.

The multitasking works perfect
I'm sick of all the RAM threads. The way Android works, it needs to utilize available RAM for caching to speed up app access. If you keep killing everything and freeing up RAM, you are slowing down your phone.
That's a very simplistic explanation, but that's how it works. Android will use a fair amount of available RAM. That's normal. Don't sweat it.
